Quick access to innovation is a key motivator for embarking on the move to the cloud. Chal-lenged with how to best go about it while also dealing with security, availability, and comple-xity in a hybrid world, organizations are looking at first adopters and their lessons learned.
The SAP Cloud Trust Center met with Döhler to find out about their move to the cloud. Döhler is a successful global producer, marketer, and provider of technology-driven natural ingredients, ingredient systems and integrated solutions for the food and beverage industry. Read why Döhler – the company with innovation in its DNA – decided to make this transition and learn about their experiences and practical tips.

Terabytes of data floating into the cloud, fully automated plants run by sensors, and robots speaking the language of IoT, … - it’s all a reality of today’s world, unimaginable in the recent past. Technology and business go side by side, joining forces towards innovation and digital transfor-mation - which is imperative for all businesses to stay ahead in today’s digital world.
“As a customer for several years, we implement the SAP-first strategy when it comes to busi-ness-driven and technological innovations”, says Winfried Winterstein, team leader SAP Techno-logy at Döhler. On their journey of becoming a digital leader in their industry, Döhler focuses on improving and digitalizing the internal processes. Winterstein further explains that they “have lear-ned that the move into the cloud is indispensable. Since we know of the high security standards at SAP, security was never a concern during our decision-making process. Security is a matter of trust and responsibility”.
Eion Beckford, SAP Basis administrator at Döh-ler, provides background information about their IT landscape: “For Döhler, intellectual property is critical. As an internationally agile company in the food and beverage industry, we rely on our sup-
plier ecosystem, the quality of ingredients from all over the world, and of course our recipes as unique selling points”. Consequently, the compa-ny is very protective and careful about this type of information, which is why they have decided to keep their SAP S/4HANA system on premise, meaning they will continue with a hybrid landscape.
As a first step, Döhler benefits from the SAP Cloud Platform with SAP Cloud Platform Identity Authentication Service (IAS) and SAP Cloud Plat-form Identity Provisioning Service (IPS). Onboar-ding of SAP Cloud Platform Integration, followed by SAP Hybris Cloud for Customer (C4C) Sales, SAP SuccessFactors, SAP Jam, both for internal use and external collaboration with customers, has already gone live with pilot groups.
For now, Döhler operates with a centrally driven IT from their headquarters in Darmstadt/Germa-ny. As Döhler continues its transformation from an international to a global company, a ‘follow the sun principle’ might become necessary in the future – for the on premise and cloud solutions. “What we have experienced so far with our cloud services is that we can rely on SAP support” explains Winterstein.

No journey comes without its challenges. “Com-pliance is a critical topic to address as early as possible when it comes to data in the cloud” says Beckford. Since data protection and data priva-cy requirements vary from country to country, a company with international data processing and data transferring activities needs to be aware of country-specific compliance guidelines, require-ments, and regulations.
“In addition”, says Winterstein, “it is helpful to have dedicated integration scenarios, use cases studies, and best practices, along with a back-
What was most critical during the transition?
„Have a pre-project focusing on data model differen-ces between SAP C4C and on premise solutions. It is important to address these differences in advance and make the necessary adoptions beforehand to obtain data quality and have consistent data mappings.“

ground in what is being integrated, in order to avoid steep learning curves during the project”.
With SAP Cloud, Döhler knows that they have a solid technology delivery model, and by correctly harnessing it, they have the “key to success”. “To find and build the expertise can be more challen-ging than expected” states Winterstein. This is where Döhler benefits from their SAP Premi-um Engagement contract which entitles them to additional support services from SAP experts on demand.
„When implementing a new solution, it is advantageous to have pre-established internal processes to guaran-tee a smooth rollout, on the business side as well as on technical side. The latter applies to cloud based projects, since data provisioning, authentication incl. authorizati-ons and security overall have to be handled across appli-cations and networks.“
„Focus on project planning to ensure that you allocate enough time and resources for the entire implementa-tion. You might also consider ramp-up time for the rollout of a cloud solution, starting with limited scope and a pilot user group, until business and technical support have been established end-to-end.“

After having started their cloud journey and in-vesting into an increasingly hybrid landscape, Winterstein explains that “the transaction system SAP C4C is just about to start and we are looking forward to the learnings we will make during this process. These will help us plan the next steps for potential cloud products to follow”.
Döhler, pushing forward on their journey to be a digital leader, is also looking into how they can benefit from SAP Leonardo, which includes Inter-net of Things (IoT) solutions. “There is the idea to co-innovate with SAP on our container manage-ment system” says Winterstein. The idea is to use SAP Cloud to get more transparency about the containers, their location, the temperature inside etc. via built-in intelligent sensors transmitting the data. “However”, adds Winterstein, “at the moment we face the challenge with sometimes limited Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity around the world. But we are confident to find a seamless solution for this in the near future – together with SAP as our trusted partner.”
We would like to thank Winfried Winterstein and Eion Beckford for their time and for sharing their learnings from a hybrid landscape, as well as their vision of the digital journey.
