Your great grandfather’s house is one of the oldest in Bahrain.

It’s a complex of houses constructed in 1914. There’s the big house, Beit Al Od, the samaller one, Beit Al Saghir, and a mosque. It used to be one of the largest houses in the neighbourhood. Rumour has it that the minaret functioned as a lighthouse.

What stands out about it architecturally?

I think the liwan on Beit Al Od. It’s covered balcony made of teak from India, built by an architect –muhendis– from Basra. What I find most interesting about it is the number of places where the styles of architectures came from, not just the materials. There’s the teak from India, the Basrawi architect, limestone from Qatar. It reflects the routes that my grandfather took during his mercantile journeys, and it’s also an architectural

time and money into preserving everything as it was. The carved ceilings are intact. He still uses the ‘rosanah’, or inbuilt cupboards. He doesn’t throw things away. Each alcove is a memory of what an aspect of life was like in the house.

You must have some incredible childhood memories.

We used to spend Eid with my great aunt –Allah yerhama– in Beit Al Saghir. I remember my dad pointing out that the 12 gypsum windows in the room we used to sit in were all different. That’s how things used to be –stylistic elements were unique and not mass produced. That’s when I first noticed that this was something that no longer exists and that we should celebrate it.

Is that why you decided to focus your MA thesis on the house?

At first I wanted to focus on urban studies, but data is very hard to access in Bahrain. I became

embodiment of a different kind of cosmopolitanism than the one we see in Bahrain today.

The Ministry of Culture renovated Beit Al Saghir into a museum. Why is it considered a part of the national heritage?

My great grandfather was a pearl merchant. At the start of the 20th century, economy and politics worked differently. Merchants had prominent positions within their small communities. Social work was a communal effort. I think the house celebrates something that doesn’t exist anymore –a public sphere that preceded the urban developtment of Manama. The ‘barza’ in front of the house, was a semi-public space where anyone could come hang out, share tea or spend the night.

What became of Beit Al Od?My great uncle inherited half of the house and has invested a lot of

interested in enviromental history and water, but the data problem came up again. Then, on April 14th 2010, I saw a huge headline in a Bahranini newspaper, announcing that the house would be handed over to the Ministry of Culture.

I realised that the house was a microcosm of the histories I was interested in telling about Manama and its evolution, and that I could explore them through its materiality.

Do you plan on continuing your research on the house and heritage in Bahrain?

I have nostalgia overload right now. I’ve been exposed to ‘heritage’ my whole life. I still want to engage with history, but I’m less interested in heritage preservation. A friend recently pointed out sound recordings in the British Library of Bahrain’s harbour in the 1930s and 1940s. I’m curious about hearing, reading and seeing things like that, items from the past that can give us an alternative way of understanding ‘now’.

but the fact that he is actually shooting on location makes a great difference. The backdrop becomes particularly important: despite almost completely dark, there are clear signs that the fun keeps going behind the subject’s back, adding a layer to the image that is absent in studio portraiture. The sitter is temporarily removed from the flux of events he/she was participating in just moments before, giving the fascinating impression that time is passing at a reduced speed and everyone behind is moving more slowly.
