The course is directed towards specialised study in the major fields of Spatial and Product Design. Pre-requisite None, but students wanting to take Drama for the first time should meet with the Drama teacher. Course description In Level 3 Drama you will explore ideas using a range of contexts. You must show willingness to research and develop your ideas thoroughly. You will perform in a variety of plays, both scripted and your own created works. You will play a significant role in a production. Students in this course will be expected to show self-management and a willingness to attend out-of-class rehearsals. You will see two live performances and critique them. Classes will include in-class workshops, involvement in lessons and practical assessment of your own performances.

The economics course balances important economic concepts and models with real life situations. Students learn the importance of the margin in making profit, reasons for market failure and measures that can be used to remedy these failures, recognise measures to reduce inequality and improve equity and examine the internal and external forces influencing the New Zealand Economy. HoD: Mrs Corcoran TiC: Mr Daveis Course Cost: $15.00 Resource Book, $15.00 Online Licence Pre-requisite 14 credits in Level 2 French and excellent independent study skills Course description French at Year 13 is based on curriculum levels 7 and 8 and is centred around speaking, listening, reading and writing in French. Throughout the year, a wide variety of materials will be drawn from the following sources; class textbooks, films, newspapers, magazines, literary texts, television and radio broadcasts. These materials will focus on functional language which will enable students to communicate in French with native speakers in New Zealand or in a French-speaking country. Gateway (12GAT) Year 13/Level 2

HoD: Ms Lomax TiC: Mrs Thomson Course Cost: Travel money for trips Learner Drivers Licence Fee Pre-requisite Must be in Year 13 Course description Gateway is a course designed for year 13 students who are wanting to prepare to leave school to a job or polytechnic course part way through the year or at the end of the year. The course offers level 2 credits only. It is expected that students will spend one day a week in a gateway placement. Students will have the opportunity to gain a first aid certificate, site safe card, health and safety training, career planning, training in how to search for and apply for jobs on line and interviewing skills. They will also have an opportunity to participate in a Kiwi Host course on site and gain credits and a Kiwi Host certificate. Students will leave the course with an up to date CV and cover letter. This course is not suitable for Level 3 students. HoD: Ms Lomax Course Cost: Travel money for trips to be advised Pre-requisite Open entry Course description This is a two year course providing students with the opportunity to gain credits towards NCEA Level 2 and the National Certificate - Employment Skills. This course continues to build on the skills achieved doing NCEA Level 1. The focus is on preparing you for the skills you need in the workplace or for further study at Polytechnic or in an Apprenticeship. You will cover: Career planning; Civics; Preparing for work; Study skills; Self-management; Budgeting and banking. Students on this course are given the opportunity to apply for Star Courses, Gateway and one day programmes. Te Reo Māori (13MAO) Year 13/Level 3

Pre-requisite 14 credits at Level 2 Te Reo Māori or a student from Kura Kaupapa Māori with the same amount of credits

Course description The Te Reo Māori Language Programme will focus on: practical activities associated with tikanga Māori practices and traditions through – karakia, whaikōrero, whakataukī and kapa haka; the values of honesty and integrity and family relationships – whānau; acquiring skills for Pānui (reading), Tuhituhi (writing), Whakarongo (listening), Kōrero (speaking), Whakaatu (presentation) and Mātakitaki (viewing); understanding the protocols belonging to the pōwhiri, the poroporoaki, the wharenui and the marae.

Pacific Studies (12PAC) Year 12/Level 2

Pre-requisite Open entry

Course description This course can be taken for one or two years. Everything studied has Pasifika as its focus, but the skills developed include study skills, the Arts, media studies and research. Outside speakers come in and we go out into the community for exhibitions, museum visits and performance. This course will challenge you to take yourself and your culture seriously and to express your ideas clearly and intelligently. Suitable for Pasifika and non-Pasifika students. Students are expected to leave this course able to ask questions, explain a point of view, have an understanding of the various cultures in the Pacific region and a broad knowledge of Pacific history. Year 13 students can gain up to 15 Level 3 credits on this course.

Technology Construction (13TCC) Year 13/Level 3

HoD: Mr Cassidy Course Cost: $70.00 students have to provide specialists items for own projects Pre-requisite 12 credits Level 2 Course description This course offers building and carpentry Unit Standards which are assessed by the outside provider, BCITO. The Unit Standards are theory units which will be done in class. There will also be a practical component that is not assessed against the Unit Standards. Technology Hospitality & Catering (13TCK) Year 13/Level 3

HoD: Mr Cassidy TiC: Mrs Kanwal Course Cost: $90.00 Food $45.00 HIS Workbook Pre-requisite Must have Level 2 – ‘Food Safety’ US 167 Course description This is a course for students who are very interested in the Catering or Food industries and who wish to pursue further training and employment in this field. This is a practical based course with a theory component. Students will also be expected to work outside of class hours sometimes and be required to engage in class work in Year 13 and be dedicated to succeeding in this course. Visual Art – Painting (13Art) Year 13/Level 3

NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

To be awarded NCEA Level 1, students must achieve 80 credits at

level 1 or above. Included in this total, at least 10 credits are needed in

literacy from specified standards and 10 credits in numeracy form

specified standards.

To be awarded NCEA Level 2, student must achieve 80 credits,

60 of which must be at level 2 or above. The other 20 credits can be

from any level on the NZQF. As from 2013 onwards, the NCEA Level 1

literacy and numeracy requirement must be met to gain NCEA Level 2.

To be awarded NCEA Level 3, student must achieve 80 credits,

60 of which must be at level 3 or above. The other 20 credits can be at

level 2 or above on the NZQF. As from 2014 onwards, the NCEA Level 1

literacy and numeracy requirement must be met to gain NCEA Level 3.

Certificate and Course Endorsement – to qualify for a certificate

endorsement with Excellence for NCEA, students require 50 credits at

Excellence level. An endorsement with Merit requires 50 credits at Merit

(or Merit and Excellence). Course endorsement at Merit and Excellence

level is also possible. To qualify for either of these, a student must gain

14 credits or more at the level of the endorsement. This must include a

minimum of 3 internally assessed credits and 3 externally assessed credits.

However, Physical Education and Level 3 Visual Arts course endorsements

can be gained without external standards.

University Entrance – as from 2014 students studying at NCEA Levels 1, 2,

and 3 will need to meet the new UE requirements. For UE awarded in 2014,

to gain entry to university from 2015 onwards, students will need to:

Attain NCEA Level 3

Achieved UE numeracy – 10 credits at level 1 or above from specific

achievement standards through a range of subjects, or a package of

three unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627 – all three are required.

Achieve UE literacy – 10 credits – five in reading and five in writing at

Level 2 and above from specific standards
