May we pray for you?

By overwhelming majority, we have decided to KEEP the 6pm Sunday evening mass until

November 7 the end of daylight saving time. We will revert to the 4pm time during the late fall

and again will return to 6pm in the spring when we are back to daylight savings time.

We apologize to those who prefer the 4pm Mass on Sunday, however the vast preference to keep it at 6pm cannot be ignored. Attendance at this mass

has essentially doubled and with an informal hand raising poll, the response was approximately

20/1 for keeping it at 6pm.

RC IA

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN DISCOVERING THE MEANING OF LIFE?

Do you ever find yourself asking questions like: “Who is God?” “Who is Jesus?” “Why am I here?” “What was I meant to be?”

“What happens when I pray?” “How can I make my life more fulfilling?” “How can I deepen my relationship with other people?” “How can I have hope?” “What happens after we die?”

“Would you like to be forgiven for all of your sins?” “Would you like to experience a one-on-one, personal encounter with Jesus Christ?”

If you answered, “YES!” to any of these questions, then it’s time for you to consider becoming Catholic! We will soon be accepting registration for our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) classes for anyone who would like to be brought into our Church. For those who have already been baptized but have never received their First Holy Communion or Confirmation, classes will be available as well.

The weekly, hour-long RCIA classes will be starting on Sunday, 3 October 2021 after the 10am Mass and will culminate on Saturday, 16 April 2022 (Easter Vigil). There is NO fee to attend these classes.

This program is open to anyone over 17 years old

We certainly look forward to welcoming you into the Church. The commitment is joyful and the rewards are everlasting!

For more information, please contact our Pastoral Associate, Dan Mathews at 203.574.0017 or via email: [email protected]

From the desk of Fr. Sullivan Dear Friends,

Work, work and more work! For many of us it seems impossible to catch up. Once a series of projects approach completion, an entire new list of responsibilities and initiatives are on the horizon. Work as we all know, can be both a curse and a blessing. In the book of Genesis, the first book of the bible, we see the work of God in creation as “good” (Gn 1). After the fall of Adam, work is still good but toil is attached to it. Men will toil at “the sweat of his brow” (Gn 3:19). Work often involves challenge, difficulty, exhaustion and struggle. Anyone who takes their job seriously will experience all of these things. God in his love for us, has also attached to work, the possibility of experiencing great joy and a sense of accomplishment. Work is participating with God in the act of creating. This includes every aspect of work: arts, sciences, literature, service professions and all forms of manual labor. Pope John Paul II in his encyclical on work, “Laborem Exercens” (On Human Work) describes work as “any activity of man whether manual or intellectual”. A scholarly Benedictine monk once explained to me that if God is pure act (the earth always in motion, plants growing, animals moving, cells active, moving tides etc.), and we are to imitate God, then we too are called to act, to move, to grow, to do, to create. We are all created to work in one way or another, according to our particular calling and vocation. We received a gift from God to per-form a particular act while on earth. So much more can be said, however in speaking about work, we need to also recognize significant weaknesses of human nature that can easily lead to laziness, selfishness and unproductiveness. This diminishes us as persons and never gives a feeling of accomplishment or satisfaction. A person who is all about relaxing and kicking back after every opportunity will never fully live out his potential. He/she may experience comfort but never true happiness. All these being said, a person also needs to rest. It is not all about work. The Sabbath (the Lord’s day) is a day of rest. We can find God profoundly in our work but even more in our worship and our rest. Both are necessary to live a fully-balanced life. God, who is the creator of all, built into the human person the need and desire of both work and rest. Labor day celebrates work and its achievements. Our country has accomplished so much for the advancement of the world in which we live. As we hopefully relax a little bit this weekend, we thank God for the gift of our vocation. May our Lord be always the center of our lives including our work. Happy Labor Day! Fr. Sullivan

Welcome to Dan Mathews, our newest Basilica staff member! He will have many duties but will concentrate on the needs of our youth and young adults.

And we bid farewell to Fr. Joe MacNeill, He heads back to Rome to complete his two years of studies.

Remember him in your prayers and pray he will return to our parish. We are confident his brief stint with us will bear abundant fruit!

Hello &

Farewell
