Congratulations nan Deturk!JDRF presented its annual Erwin

Lurie Volunteer of the Year Award to Nan DeTurk at the annual JDRF OneConference in Washington, DC in July. Nan received this award for her leadership and outstanding contributions as a volunteer on behalf of people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). After the death of Nan’s husband from complications related to T1D, she became devoted to making a difference in his honor, volunteering time, leadership and financial resources to the Western PA Chapter. Nan’s

impact on our local Chapter has been profound, guiding the Chapter through challenges and toward successes. She was recently appointed to the JDRF International Board of Directors after serving on two international JDRF committees.

“It’s a great honor to receive this award from JDRF, an organization that has been a very important part of my life for many years,” said Ms. DeTurk. “I’ve seen first-hand how difficult type 1 diabetes is, but I’ve also seen how far we have come at JDRF. Working together, we are helping to lessen the burden of this disease until it is a thing of the past. Looking back, I can’t help but be confident about the progress that lies ahead, and I’m excited to be a part of that progress.”

The Volunteer of the Year Award is named after the late Erwin Lurie, who helped found JDRF in 1970 with wife Carol and others after his son was diagnosed with T1D at age 10. Up until Mr. Lurie’s death in 2009, and Mrs. Lurie’s death in 2013, they were dedicated advocates whose vision guided JDRF to becoming the largest charitable supporter of T1D research.

For those walking in your first JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, WELCOME! We are so glad to have you with us this year! For those who have been with us for a number of years, THANK YOU! Your continued support means so much and allows us to continue our important work—funding research for type 1 diabetes.

Hearing requests from many of you, we have made some changes to the Walk this year. Below are some things that will be new this year:✦ Walk Dates – The biggest change from previous years

is that we are now hosting our Western PA Walks on two separate dates. This year, the Walk in Schenley Park, Pittsburgh will be on Saturday, September 21 and the Walk at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg will be on Saturday, September 28. Join us for one or both Walks!

✦ tents – This year we have changed the criteria to qualify for a family tent at the Walk. Previously, if your team had 50 or more members, JDRF provided a tent to serve as a gathering place for your team. This year to qualify for a tent, we are asking teams to raise $5,000. Understanding that families turn in a lot of money on Walk day or in those final weeks before the Walk (and after too), you would need at least $3,750 of $5,000 in by September 9. We need to have a deadline so that we can order the tents, have signs made and configure the Walk site.

✦ local website – This past year our local and national websites had complete make-overs. We hope that you will find our websites easier to navigate with a lot more resources at your fingertips. Please visit our local site at www.jdrf.org/westernpa for all our local resources.

✦ Facebook – If you have not already done so, go to the JDRF Western PA Facebook page and “like” us. We will continue to post Walk updates, event photos, JDRF facts and more.

✦ t-shirts – The team T-shirt contest will be voted on via Facebook this year. In years past, the T-shirts were voted on at the Walk by a few selected judges. This year we would like to open the voting up to a larger audience. The T-shirt with the most likes on Facebook will be the winner.

✦ Fundraising deadline – You will now be able to continue fundraising and collecting your donations well after the Walk this year. The fundraising deadline for incentive prizes and awards will be December 13, 2013. This gives teams longer to collect those last minute donations, corporate matching gifts and even make a final appeal right before the holidays and the end of the calendar year.

✦ awards Ceremony – Extending the fundraising deadline means that we will also be moving back the date for our annual awards ceremony. Traditionally held in November, we will now be holding it in January. Date and location still to be determined.

Caroline Simms had the opportunity to participate in the 2013 Children’s Congress, a powerful event with a mission of delivering the message of type 1 diabetes to our country’s leaders. Hear about her experience in her own words:

I am so grateful to have been a part of the JDRF Children’s Congress 2013. It meant so much to me to be a part of this wonderful event. I was surrounded by people who understood what it is like to live with type 1 diabetes every day, and who are working hard to try to find a cure for this disease. I realized that I could actually make a difference in how people view type 1 diabetes. I could see that my story affected other people emotionally, as they saw what I went through when I was diagnosed and what I go through daily as I try to manage my T1D.

I learned so much when I was there. I watched as the role models talked about the many things they do even though they have type 1 diabetes and I saw that they do not let T1D limit them. I saw how the celebrities joined with all of the delegates in different events, showing us that they were advocating just like we were because finding

a cure was important to them too. I was amazed by the ongoing research and I learned how important the Special Diabetes Program is to keep the research moving forward. I realized my voice was capable of educating members of Congress and that they were willing to take time to listen to me. I know I made an impact and that means a lot to me.

I loved meeting the other delegates and exchanging pins and other things from our states. I met a girl from Israel and one from the Netherlands. I met kids with diabetic alert dogs. I saw the many ways the other delegates were managing their type 1 diabetes, and we all learned things from each other. I met the other delegates from PA and we spoke to Senator Casey together. I also formed a very close friendship with Hannah, the delegate from Erie. I believe our friendship will last a lifetime.

What made the strongest impact on me at the 2013 Children’s Congress was just how strong the group is that is out looking for a cure for type 1 diabetes. I could not help but be inspired as I watched the delegates, their parents, the researchers, the celebrities; the members of Congress and all of the wonderful people at JDRF come together with one goal: to find ways to prevent, treat, and cure type 1 diabetes. It gave me faith and hope that we can achieve anything if we all continue to work together. I know my mother and I will never forget this experience. It truly was life-changing and I am so grateful to have represented JDRF of Western Pennsylvania.

Pittsburgh Foundation Day of Givingthursday, October 3 | www.pittsburghgives.org

JDRF will once again participate in The Pittsburgh Foundation’s annual Day of Giving on Thursday, October 3, 2013 with an opportunity for you to maximize your gift to JDRF.

More than $8.5 million was raised last year for the region’s nonprofits, and since the launch of the program in 2009, the Day of Giving events have raised over $21 million for local charitable organizations.

For this year’s Day of Giving, the match pool for Allegheny County is expected to be approximately $750,000, similar to 2012. This year, to ensure a robust match percentage for participating nonprofits, the Foundation has determined that only the first $1,000 per individual per organization will be eligible to receive matching dollars from the match pools. In previous years, the cap was $10,000.

More than 40 donors supported JDRF during the 2012 Day of Giving campaign.

Top fundraising student, Lexe Speck, together with the Blue Crew helped Bedford Elementary raise over $10,000 for T1D research.

5th grader, Gavin Berardi, tells his classmates what it’s like to live with T1D.

Designation – #2624.

From September 2012 through May 2013, JDRF Western PA and our outstanding volunteers were busy making their way into 18 different schools around Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. With the help of last year’s Kids Walk sponsors, Panera Bread and Highmark, Inc., and more than 6,400 students, our Chapter was able to raise over $103,000 for T1D research!

Congratulations to our top fundraising school, Harrison Park Elementary, for raising over $12,000 for T1D research. Not only did Harrison Park raise the most out of this year’s participating schools, but it was their first time doing a Kids Walk. Way to go!

Congratulations are also in order for the 2012-2013 top student fundraiser, Lexe Speck! Courtesy of Panera Bread, Lexe and her family won a trip to Aruba for seven days. What a great way to celebrate all that hard work!

School bells are ringing…are you ready?Diabetes in School

All students with diabetes need a strong support network at school to help them properly manage their T1D on a daily basis and in emergency situations. The JDRF National website (www.jdrf.org) has articles and resources that contain practical information to help ensure the best possible school experience for your child or loved one with diabetes.

Basic tips for School#1 Do Your Homework—Before you meet with the staff at your child’s school, do a little research and get organized. Do not assume that the school will know how to provide the best care for your child. #2 Meet with School Staff—If you are like most parents, it will be necessary for you to substantially increase communication with your child’s school before classes start. Educating school personnel about diabetes and your child’s individual needs is the first important step. Speak to the principal, any teacher the child will have, the school nurse, physical education teacher, any coaching staff and the cafeteria manager.#3 Develop Your Strategy—Have a clear idea of what you need to do to prepare your child for their day-to-day activities. Many parents prepare supply kits for the classroom teachers, school nurse and coaches that include syringes, pump insertion sets, a glucose monitor, lancet needles and snacks. Don’t forget to include a glucagon kit!#4 Stay Involved—Maintain an ongoing, open communication with the school, especially if your child’s diabetes management plan changes. Maintain a positive, team-oriented relationship. A suggestion for teambuilding is to get your school involved in fundraising, for example a Kids Walk. It gives your child the chance to explain type 1 diabetes, raise awareness and have fun at the same time. Do everything you can to create the best possible environment for your child.

Diabetes in CollegeCollege is a strange, anxious, exhilarating time when you’re

floating somewhere between dependence and independence, between high school and the “real world.” Whether you are just beginning to prepare for college or you’re currently in the thick of it, the JDRF National website has articles that will provide you with practical information for dealing with T1D in college.

Basic tips for College#1 College Visits—When you begin visiting colleges, visit their health centers and meet with the staff about diabetes care. Don’t feel you need to rely on the school health center if better health care is available in the area. Also, be sure to contact the school about housing needs, testing requirements, and your other rights on campus.#2 Health Care Coverage—Discuss your health insurance coverage with your parents before you leave home. You should know what your options are, how to handle an emergency situation and what your insurance requires. If you

are attending college out-of-state, be sure to find out what medical facilities near you are covered by your insurance.#3 Develop Your Strategy—Have a clear emergency procedure plan and an emergency contact person. What is the staff permitted to do for a student in an emergency? Have an ample inventory of the right kinds of food, diabetes supplies, blood glucose meters and snacks. If you use a pharmacy for your diabetes supplies, be sure to set up your prescriptions with that pharmacy ahead of time.#4 Make Good Choices—When you head off to school, you don’t need to tell everyone you have diabetes, but some key people should know. If you have a roommate, educate him or her on signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia. When you go to a party, make sure that someone you know will be there – someone who knows you have diabetes and what to do in case of an emergency. Make the decision to ALWAYS wear your medical alert bracelet. Do everything you can to create the best possible environment for you.#5 You’re 18+ Now…Become a JDRF Advocate!—Advocates are the voice of JDRF’s local government relations network. JDRF Advocates reach out to their representatives and senators to advocate for research for funding for a cure. As part of the JDRF Advocacy team, your story will take on added power when it joins forces with the thousands of others across the nation.
