• 10th grade students take MATH and ELA MCAS. The Biology MCAS Test is a course-end exam.

• Dr. Whalen explained the four categories that students are rated for ELA and Math MCAS.

• 60% of students scored MEETING EXPECTATIONS for ELA. • 56% of students scored MEETING EXPECTATIONS for Math. • There has been a downward trend in science scores for the past two years. The legacy

test was still taken for science last year and uses the old MCAS terminology for scoring. • The district and the school is Not Requiring Assistance or Intervention from the state. • Seekonk High School is Partially Meeting Targets scoring a 73% - 75% is needed to be

Meeting Targets. • Cumulatively, taking the past two years into account, SHS is making Substantial

Progress Toward Targets. The District is as well. In 2018 the annual target percentage was 20%, weighted at 40%. This improved to 73% which is weighted at 60%. Following the same formula, the district is making Significant Progress Towards Targets at 55%.

Dr. Whalen reviewed the District Strategy for Continuous Improvement that included four areas

• Meeting the Needs of All Students • Personalize Learning • Strengthen Academic Programming • Data-Based Decision Making

Dr. Whalen reviewed the Seekonk High School Strategy for Continuous Improvement that will be presented to the School Committee in November. He explained the specific action steps that were aligned with the district plan. The School Council was in agreement that the SHS Strategy for Continuous Improvement was ready to be presented to the School Committee. For the most part, it is a response to the NEASC recommendations from last year and includes an additional goal on RTI, which aligns with the district plan. Dr. Whalen explained PROJECT LEAD THE WAY and the process for obtaining a grant to offer additional STEM Programming. There are 3 pathways, Engineering, Computer, and BioMed.

SHS will begin the process with the Engineering Pathway. More information and updates will follow. Extensive discussion took place in regard to assessments.

• Traditional Mid Terms and Finals vs. 4 short common quarterly assessments • Senior Exemptions

The council was indecisive on the decision that took place to end senior exemptions, but a lengthy discussion regarding the pros and cons took place. The council overall liked the idea of shorter, quarterly assessments to support the school to meet the 990-hour requirement. However, points were made in favor of keeping the traditional exams as well. Dr. Whalen explained what Social Emotional Learning is and spoke about the role of the district’s new coordinator, Ginny Miller. Dr. Whalen updated the Council on Professional Development and the upcoming In-Service Days. Dr. Whalen gave an update re: School Safety, covering where SHS is with ALICE training. He spoke about the use of the new RAPTOR system, and mentioned that he was satisfied with how the change to not allow students in to the building prior to 7 AM has worked out. The meeting adjourned at 5:20 pm.
