SCHOOL VISION
To build a community that empowers, challenges and inspires learners to foster their
creativity and talents, developing the skills to fulfil their dreams in an ever-changing
world.
...THINK...IMAGINE...BECOME...
December 14th 2017
Dear Parents, Students and Friends,
It’s that time of year when we celebrate the learning success of our
students. Looking through the reports most students have great pro-
gress and should be proud to celebrate this success. As long as eve-
ryone has tried their best that is all we can ask. Many have chal-
lenged themselves and made great growth whilst some are still cruis-
ing! Teachers are encouraging a growth mindset which will further
support students. Please read the attached link with information
about reports. Please make an appointment with your child’s class
teacher if there are any queries.
Class Parent Representatives 2018
Please complete the form attached to this newsletter so that we can
have all Class Parent Representatives organised and ready to go.

Staff News
Congratulations to Michelle Smith who has been appointed as Assistant Principal at Osborne PS for
Term 1 next year. Michelle be a great loss to SEPS but we are happy that she is pursuing her career fur-
ther so that another school can benefit from her experience and expertise. We wish her all the best.
Michelle will not be replaced but her role will be taken on by others. To cater for the teaching and
learning that Michelle was responsible for, we have employed Anthony Klvac and Carmen Leal to be
support teachers in Term 1. Note Carmen will be working extra time for this and still teaching her own
allocated class with Mrs Hain. An Acting Assistant Principal role has also been advertised internally.
Jess Webb, Level 5 teacher, is still recovering from her knee accident and we are sorry that she can-
not be with her class at this special time of the year.
Miss Harris had her practice wedding with Mr Armitage and we hope that on Jan 2nd she will be over
the nerves and has a wonderful day with Edward. The children were very excited to see her in a wed-
ding gown and looking a beautiful bride.

2018 Staff – 23 classes
Transition to new classes.
For our preparation for 2018, students experienced our school-based transition program for levels 1-6.
These sessions were done in the current next levels with the current teachers. Students will meet their
new teacher in their classrooms on Wednesday 20th December.
Our aim is try to ensure a smooth transition with positivity for 2018. The transition from one year to anoth-
er is an example of where we can help children to develop and practise their resilience. Supporting your
children to adapt to the change positively and with a growth mindset will ensure happy and confident
students.
Staff also met this week to discuss handover information to the 2018 teachers.
Congratulations Ex Students from Sandy East.
It was lovely to see lots of past SEPS students acknowledged at the Sandringham College presentation
night … nearly half of the Year 7 awards were awarded to past SEPS students, including the coveted
‘Outstanding Year 7 Student’. Congratulations to all.
I hope that our SEPS community enjoys another wonderful week of learning and fun.

Can you help? We are looking for a boat!
Sadly we have had to remove our wooden boat in the playground due to safety reasons. It has
facilitated countless hours of imaginative play for our students.
If you know someone who has a tinny that is hiding in the garage SEPS would love to give it a new
home and lease of life.
Please contact the school office if you can help. Thank you
Parent Class Volunteering in 2018
Are you interested in volunteering in the classroom or on excursions?
We’d love to have you!
Save the date:
Tuesday 20th February (6:00-7:00pm) or Thursday 22nd February (2:15-3:15pm)
*Same training presentation – attendance required at one only.
To volunteer in school classrooms and on excursions, you must hold a Working With Children
Check. These are FREE for volunteers! You can apply now online or at the Post office. SEPS pol-
icy requires volunteers to also attend a training and information session. At the session you will
learn tips about working with individuals and small groups, receive a ‘crash course’ in what
teaching and learning looks like at SEPS, as well as essential legal requirements including con-
fidentiality.
If you completed a training session in either 2015, 2016 or 2017 you do not need to attend in
2018. However, if you attended a training session prior to 2015, or if you have not attended
before, we look forward to seeing you on either Tuesday 20th or Thursday 22nd of February.
Bookings not required.
Sorry—no toddlers allowed.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING AT SANDY EAST THIS WEEK?
Foundation
Week 10 already!
The students have had an exciting week this week. They enjoyed a Hands on Science incursion where
they conducted experiments, designed and created models and investigated materials to under-
stand what makes them work. The students enjoyed the opportunity to get hands on with the materi-
als!
The students were also given a taste of what is to come next year when they spent 100 minutes with
the current Year 1 teachers after recess on Thursday. They reflected on the experience afterwards
and are all looking forward to next year very much.
We know there is much excitement about entering the Year 1 classrooms next week for a transition
with their new teachers and classmates.
Foundation Team
Foundation Party at Cheltenham Park
The Parent Reps for Foundation organised a wonderful day out for all the Foundation children and
their families on Sunday. The sun shone, the sausages sizzled and Santa arrived to deliver special gifts
to all the children. A perfect afternoon to finish the children's first year of school. Thank you to all the
Reps who helped organise and set up for the day. Special mention to the dads who helped cook the
sausages -Nick Holmes and Simon Withington. Frank Zhang (Alex's Dad) thank you for being our unoffi-
cial photographer (beautiful pictures). A HUGE thank you to our fabulous Santa, who made the day
so magical, Ian Marchment (Riley and Maya Withingtons Grandfather).

Level 3 and 4
This week, students have been writing a variety of narrative stories in forms of plays, chapter books,
comic strips, etc. Stories are varying in themes from cheeky elves getting up to mischief to lost treasure
at sea.
Students have also learned some helpful illustrating skills at our incursion this week. We can’t wait to
see how these artistic skills will help enhance all of the narrative stories that are being written!
Next week, students will have a lot to look forward to. On Tuesday, we will be having our end of year
celebration at Village Cinemas and our pizza party at Spring Street Park. Thank you to those parents
who have given permission via Compass or the paper permission form. Just a reminder that all Level 3
and 4 students also need to bring in $5 in a named envelope for the pizza party. Students will receive
pizza, juice and an icy pole on Tuesday.
We hope you all have a wonderful last week of school!
Level 3 and 4 Team
Level 5 & 6 L6 Transition
This Week in Year 6, we have had our secondary school statewide Government school transition day.
In a nutshell, the year 6 students go to their secondary schools, and get to know their classes, and get
to do some cool activates. Some of those schools we are going to include Sandy Sec, Brighton Sec,
CBC, Mentone Grammar, St Bedes, St Josephs and Bentleigh. Some of the schools ended their day at
2.45. The year 6 students also got to meet some of the older students, and even people they already
knew, like siblings.

Level 1 & 2
Welcome to Week 10, the second to last week of the year! We have been working hard on ensuring
that our learning spaces are organised and ready to be packed away next week ready for next
year.
On Tuesday the Level 1 and 2 students enjoyed our final excursion (celebration) of the year, going
to see Ferdinand at Southland. Armed with a bucket of popcorn and a bottle of water the students
all thoroughly enjoyed themselves (and so did the teachers).
We have been reviewing our learning this term and reflecting on reading, writing and maths and
realising just how much we have all learnt.
In Maths, we have been revising key concepts of fractions and finishing off time.
We wish you a wonderful week ahead and look forward to celebrating the final week with you.

Graduation
Level sixes time at SEPS is unfortunately coming to an end and we want to end it with a BANG! The
houses have been working really hard on their songs and dances and are sure to put on an amaz-
ing performance next Monday (18th December). What a great way to say goodbye to this year’s
Level 6 students. We’re are sad to say good bye, and good luck next year!

Rubbish In The Ocean
We have been researching animals in the ocean and the effects that rubbish has on them. It is a
great problem in Australia with over 8 million tonnes of rubbish ending up in the ocean each year.
Animals are dying fast because they mistake rubbish as food or shelter, for example turtles mistake
plastic as jelly fish and they eat it which can cause them to die. We need as much help as we can
get to help fix this problem, and picking up rubbish, even if it’s not yours, will help. Plastic can take
up to 400 years to break down, glass can take up to 1 million years to break down and tin can take
up to 100 years to break down. When you are buying food be mindful of where the rubbish will end
up so you could be more careful of what you buy and how it’s packaged. Dispose of rubbish the
right way and make a difference!

Art
What a fabulous year we have had in art!. Foundation to level 2 have had a wonderful time creating
some Christmas reindeer, and I hope they find a special place at home to bring some Christmas cheer.
Portfolios are coming home this week along with other special creations that have been on display.
SMOCKS are also coming home and will need to be washed, kept in a safe place, then returned in the
first week of school next year, with your child’s name clearly written on it.
Thanks to all the families who have supported our program in all sorts of ways this year, and I look for-
ward to working with the students and families at SEPS in 2018.
