The New Art Gallery Walsallis an internationally famous world class gallery in your region. A 21st century building housing a modern and contemporary permanent art collection over 2 floors, a temporary exhibition programme over a further 2 floors, an interactive gallery, Art Library and roof terrace overlooking the regeneration and developments in Walsall. The gallery is a huge building with lots to see and do for a whole day out.

Visiting an art gallery helps pupils with different learning styles develop confidence, gives them an out of classroom learning experience to write about, helps them engage with the world and brings art to life. The New Art Gallery offers you and your pupils inspiration through the world class art on display, providing stimulus for cross curricular learning, developing communication skills, problem solving, critical and contextual studies, creative thinking and personal learning.

• All approx 1 hour 30 minutes • £40 for schools within Walsall MBC,

£70 for schools beyond Walsall MBC• Recommended group size is 20 max• The workshops are based on QCA

schemes of work, but are extremely cross curricular in approach

Alien AdventuresDo you feel like an alien in an art gallery? Come along and meet our arty alien, find out how he feels, what he eats, about the patterns on his skin. You can make some alien antennae for yourself, hear a story and make a badge.

— Primary KS1 to KS2 — What is sculpture?Pupils look, draw, explore and develop understanding about sculpture and materials. Then create individual sculptures with mod roc. This workshop links well with work on portraits.

Learning to printPupils explore, discuss, draw and then learn printmaking techniques inspired by the collection. This workshop links well with work on exploring architecture, landscapes, animals or still life. The subject content is your choice.

Contemporary Art discussion workshopsThroughout the year there will be exhibition feature weeks for you to work with a contemporary artist to develop understanding around contemporary art. Join our e-mailing list to hear about opportunities coming up.

Artist projectsAsk about our artist in residence programme for opportunities to meet professional artists and hear about their studio practise. Up to date information available on the website.

In Conversation eventsCheck out our public programme in the What’s On brochures, ring for info on events or check out the website to find out about these events to hear first hand from exhibiting artists and curators. Particularly appropriate for FE and HE audiences. All places must be booked by individuals in advance.

Any of the workshops and talks detailed under primary and secondary schools can be booked for special needs groups. Contact us to discuss how we can meet the needs of your group.

We can run talks that include touching the artworks and audio description. We use picture cards to aid explanations in practical workshops giving step by step instructions.

Practical workshops for special needs groups are 50% of the full cost.

The gallery offers skill development and discussion sessions to inspire and use artwork in cross curricular study and classroom practice. These sessions help you gain confidence in art skills and using an art gallery with your group. A session can last anything up to 4 hours depending on your availability, and be weekday, weekend or twilight. Sessions can be booked at your convenience, minimum numbers apply. Please call the Education team for a chat.

The gallery can offer sessions in the following areas:

Art Library

Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am - 5pm

The Art Library reference is full of resources to accompany the gallery’s collections and exhibitions programme. Please telephone in advance if you intend a whole class to use the library. A librarian can offer group introductions, informal talks about the library and support student research.

Books – a wide range including about art movements, architecture, exhibitions at the gallery and collection catalogues.

Children’s books – for younger readers to be introduced to shape and colour and introduce famous artists and read stories.

Internet access – the are several computers for art research

Contemporary Journals – monthly journals are in the library as well as growing collections of DVDs and CD-ROMs.

Archives – we hold many documents, photographs and audio visual material about the building and the family behind the collections. You can access these by appointment.

Gallery shop

We have a great range of the latest contemporary art books and teaching resources in our shop so please drop by and have a look on your visit.

Art Cart activitiesThis is a trolley that has six sets each, of three different activities. Please contact the Education team to find out which activities are on each month, and to book a date for use. Pop into the gallery any weekend to see the Art Cart in use for family groups.

Frisky Bags rucksack trailsSuitable for smaller groups. These are rucksacks full of activities to help you explore the collections. Pupils can work in teams with an adult to discuss or solve each activity.

discussion cards These give an image of the artwork and a set of open ended questions to help you discuss the artworks. Two packs available Work and Leisure or Animals and Birds.

Bags for BabesA series of playbags of textile shapes to recreate a picture on display. Great for the very young.

Teachers notesQuick and easy reference notes are available for most exhibitions. Please contact us for a free copy.
