Feast of TishriA Masonic Day of Thanksgiving

The Feast of the Tabernacles commemorates the ceremonies of completion and dedication of King Solomon’s Temple, whichwas begun in the year 2992 BC, and finished in the year 3000 BC, a little more than seven years in its erection. In the year3001 BC, six months after the completion, in the month of Tishri, the Temple was dedicated with solemn ceremonies to theservice of the one Living and True God. In order that these ceremonies might be performed with the greatest possible solem-nity, King Solomon postponed the dedication until the Feast of the Tabernacles, the 15th day of Tishri.

The history of the “Feast of Tishri” is based upon the Feast of the Tabernacle, “Succos” described in the Old Testament. Inthe book of Leviticus, Chapter 23, Verse 34 we read, “The Fifteenth Day of this Seventh Month (Tishri) shall be the Feastof the Tabernacles for seven days unto the Lord.” It was at one time considered the greatest festival among the earlyHebrews.

The directions for the observance of the Feast are related in the Book of Leviticus, “And ye shall take you on the first daythe fruit of godly trees, branches of palm trees, and boughs of thick trees and willows of the brook and ye shall rejoice beforethe Lord your God seven days.

In ancient days, the joyous festival was observed by the Israelites in the Palestinian Autumn when they had finished the agri-cultural toil of the year. They thanked God and praised Him for the abundance stored in barn and bin, and offered prayers toHim and He sent new rains for the coming year.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGEAttendance for July and August Stated Meetings has been

excellent; in fact, the Chef’s Committee had to return to the kitchen toprepare extra food. It has been good to see the comradery and fellow-ship after the meetings.

I have asked Brother Max Gilley, 32o KCCH, to serve as Co-Chairman of the New Member Assignments Committee in order toexpedite the assignment of new members who have volunteered towork on specific committees. There is much talent in our Valley andwe need to give everyone an opportunity to work. Preference is givento requests as I believe that one person with passion for a project ismore valuable than ten with good intentions; if a committee preferencecannot be honored, we will give the member his second choice oranother preference.

We are slowly completing the process of having our DegreeMasters to meet with each other and the Stage Crew so we can finalizethe script, people movement and location of furniture for each degree. The final package will contain the script, drawing of the stage and aphotograph of each scene so that coordination of degree and scenechanges can be accomplished more efficiently and quickly. All that wedo is for the benefit and education of our candidates and we should putour best foot forward.

It is anticipated that we will discontinue the mailing of our month-ly newspaper effective October 1, 2006; it is costing us $36,000 annu-ally, and my feedback that perhaps only one third of our members aretaking time to read it. In its place we will publish a quarterly magazinewhich will keep our membership updated; in addition, we will send amonthly newsletter to all of our members who have furnished ouroffice with e-mail addresses. The e-mail letters will not contain manypictures as we recognize that such a practice will present difficulty forour Brethren who have dial up internet connection. Pictures will becontained in the quarterly magazine that will be mailed out to all of ourmembers. Some of you have provided me with very good suggestionson our operations. They are welcomed as long as they are in writingso I can discuss the same with you.

Continue to support your Valley; your presence is an affirmationthat Scottish Rite membership means more to you than being a memberof a mere social club.

Fraternally; M. Douglas Adkins, 33o IGH, Chairman Valley of Dallas

Secretary’s CornerBrethren:

Things are looking good here at Dallas Scottish Rite. Our build-ing rentals are up from last year and we are getting some great expo-sure with TV shows filming some scenes here in the Cathedral. Thelatest group to use the building is the program “Prison Break”. Thebuilding is being used for some exteriors and the lobby and library arebeing used as part of the White House.

The Chef’s Committee has been doing a fantastic job with food forStated Meetings and Reunions. I also want to thank the Bus BoyCommittee for all the hard work they do to make all of our events spe-cial. Another committee that works behind the scenes to help theoffice staff be more efficient is the Sons of Hiram, headed up byMillard Jones, 32o KCCH. Kudos to everyone who volunteers for anyof the many committees that make this place run smoothly. If itweren’t for our great group of volunteers, we could not keep this placein operation.

Stated Meetings in July and August were held in the evening andboasted the largest attendance we have had for a Stated Meeting inquite some time. The dinners were also well attended with great foodand comradery. I thank all of you who attended and hope to see youall in the future.

At long last, we now have the certificates and 50 year pins for allthe Scottish Rite Masons in the Valley of Dallas who are due to be rec-ognized in 2005 and 2006. All of you Brothers listed on the last pageof this newspaper who can, please be with us on September 11 toreceive this great honor. If you can not be with us, your certificate andpin will be mailed to you.

Fraternally, Ed Kirkpatrick, 32o KCCH, General Secretary
