In an era of health care reform, collaboration is more important than ever before. The new medical campus will be the center for cardiovascular services across the Scripps system. Scripps also recently signed a 10-year comprehensive agreement with Kaiser Permanente to be the exclusive provider of cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology for Kaiser patients in San Diego County. This agreement allows Scripps to maintain its standing as the largest cardiovascular program in the region, which means health care infrastructure and expertise can be used to best serve the community. The master plan includes replacing and enhancing existing facilities at Scripps La Jolla. Scripps has had a community plan in place for more than 20 years that allows for a total of 682 hospital beds. This plan is predicated on projected community need trends and will provide a regional campus where patients can have all their health care needs met in one place. Scripps La Jolla has 389 beds today, is expected to have the same number of beds upon the completion of the first and second hospital towers, and 531 beds upon the project’s completion in 2035. The plan has been submitted and is currently in review by the City of San Diego. Under the plan, the existing hospital will be razed and a new hospital will be built to meet the state’s unfunded mandate, Senate Bill 1953 (1994), which requires that all acute care hospitals in California must meet heightened seismic standards through retrofitting, replacement or removal from service by 2030. Building for the Future

Scripps La Jolla has a proud past. Established by Ellen Browning Scripps on Prospect Street in the village of

La Jolla in 1924, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla originally boasted 57 hospital beds to serve the community. As the

community’s needs grew, so did Scripps La Jolla and in 1964, the hospital moved to its current Genesee Avenue location

(where it was the only building on the mesa). Today Scripps is preparing to meet the community’s future needs well into

the 21st Century by rebuilding Scripps La Jolla as a destination medical campus and a regional health care resource.

The patient-focused master plan, which spans the next 25 years, includes a new hospital, research and graduate medical education facilities, and medical offices designed to meet the needs of the San Diego region and of patients who travel here to receive world-class health care.
