Description of a new Scutacarid species (S. scolyti sp. n. ) living on bark beetles (Coleoptera: Ipidae) is given from Germany. \ The junior author a n d D r . H . BOGENSCHÜTZ have launched a series of investiga- tions concerning mites living on/with wood-borer beetles. A sample of 4 72 5 adults from a much larger number of flying Ips typographus beetles were collected during June 1980 from pheromone traps placed by Dr. Hermann BO- GENSCHÜTZ in the Forest District o f F r e i b u r g , S t . Peter, St. Märgen and Kirchzarten (Black Forest) Germany. The specimens were put in 70% alcohol and sent to MOSER, who examined 200 beetles from each locality (n= 800). Only ten specimens of a new scutacarid, Scutacarus scolyti sp. n. were attached to these 800 beetles. A n o t h e r 60 S. scolyti sp. n. were retrieved at the bottom of the vials, which contained 3 925 beetles (4 725 - 800 = 3 925). To determine approximately the average number of mites per beetle, we used the following equation: 1225 m X = 59.06 = 60 X 10 X represents the number o f m i t e s that should have been attached to the total sample if our smaller sample of 800 beetles carried 10 mites attached. Therefore, about half of the mites had fallen off of the beetles during shipment and handling. The ten mites in the smaller sample phoreticized 6 of the beetles. Three beetles had one mite, two had two mites, and one had three mites. All of the mites were attached to the base of the coxae by grasping setae with the large claw in the mites' leg I (Fig. 5). Curiously, some localities had far more mites than others. Freiburg and Kirchzarten had only 6 and 3 mites respectively, whereas St. Peter had 34 and St. Märgen had 2 7. S. scolyti sp. n. also rides at least two other scolytids, Hylurgops palliatus (Gyllen- hal 1813) and Trypodendron lineatus (Olivier 1795). These two beetles were likewise collect- ed by Dr. BOGENSCHÜTZ from pheromone traps in the Black Forest near F r e i b u r g d u r i n g March and April 1980. In the course of identification the specimens proved to be new for science. Scutacarus scolyti sp. n. All examined specimens have been prepared in Hoyer-fluid, nevertheless, they were in good condition, though only approximative measurements can be given: length: 400 pm, breadth: 280 jum. Dorsal side (Fig. 1): Clypeus is much broader than the other segments, inner hair (c^) originating behind outer one ^ ) . Greater length differences existing between hairs c^ and C2 than between hairs Cj. A l l h a i r s thin, simple, c^ longest of all. Hairs of segment Ps, psj and ps 2 of equal length, emitted close to each other; ciliated, hairs pSg thin, much shorter.

T o d e t e r m i n e a p p r o x i m a t e l y the a v e r a g e n u m b e r o f m i t e s p e r b e e t l e , w e u s e d the f o l l o w i n g e q u a t i o n :

T h e t en m i t e s i n the s m a l l e r s a m p l e p h o r e t i c i z e d 6 o f the b e e t l e s . T h r e e b e e t l e s had one m i t e , t w o h a d t w o m i t e s , and one h a d t h r e e m i t e s . C u r i o u s l y , s o m e l o c a l i t i e s h a d f a r m o r e m i t e s t h a n o t h e r s . F r e i b u r g a n d K i r c h z a r t e n had o n l y 6 and 3 m i t e s r e s p e c t i v e l y , w h e r e a s St. P e t e r h a d 34 and St. M ä r g e n had 2 7.

A B S T R A C T . A u n i q u e f e m a l e s p e c i m e n o c c u r r i n g i n a D e r m a t o p h a g o i d e s p o p u l a t i o n o f a h o u s e - d u s t s a m p l e c o l l e c t e d f r o m an a s t h m a t i c p a t i e n t ' s h o m e i s d e s c r i b e d .

V O O R H O R S T a n d S P I E K S M A (19 64) r e p o r t e d t h a t h o u s e - d u s t a l l e r g y i s m o s t p r o b ­a b l y due t o the then r a t h e r i n a d e q u a t e l y k n o w n D e r m a t o p h a g o i d e s m i t e s . O S H I M A ( 1 9 6 4 ) found t h e m i n the dus t o f J a p a n e s e s c h o o l s . H e p o i n t e d out the r e l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n t h e s e m i t e s a n d h u m a n d e r m a t o s i s . H e n o t e d t h e i r o c c u r r e n c e i n an e v e n g r e a t e r n u m b e r i n d w e l l i n g - h o u s e s r e p r e s e n t i n g 70 -86% o f the t o t a l m i t e n u m b e r , and 9 0 - 9 9 % i n s c h o o l s ( O S H I M A , 1 9 6 7 ) . S P I E K S M A and S P I E K S M A - B O E Z E M A N (1967) e x a m i n e d r e g u l a r l y the m i t e fauna of t h r e e h o u s e s d u r i n g one y e a r . " D e r m a t o p h a g o i d e s s p p . " gave 8 7 . 6 - 9 4 . 8% of the m i t e s i n t h i s s e r i e s o f h o u s e - d u s t s a m p l e s . T h i s r a t e w a s 6 9 . 9 % i n the m i t e f auna o f h o u s e - d u s t c o l l e c t e d f r o m 150 d i f f e r e n t h o u s e s . T h e r a t e o f t h e i r o c c u r r e n c e w a s 100% i n the s a me s e r i e s .

I n v e s t i g a t i o n s p r o v e d the w o r l d - w i d e d i s t r i b u t i o n o f t hese m i t e s a n d t h e i r p a t h o ­g e n e t i c r o l e i n h u m a n a U e r g i c ( s k i n a n d r e s p i r a t o r y t r a c t ) d i s e a s e s . P a r a l l e l w i t h the i n ­c r e a s i n g n u m b e r o f c l i n i c a l data the a t t e n t i o n of p a r a s i t o l o g i s t s w a s a l s o c a l l e d t o t h e m . B y t h e i r s y s t e m a t i c r a n g i n g , r e d e s c r i p t i o n o f the m o s t i m p o r t a n t s p e c i e s D e r m a t o p h a g o i d e s p t e r o n y s s i n u s ( T r o u e s s a r t , 1897) , a n d b y the d e s c r i p t i o n o f s e v e r a l n e w s p e c i e s F A I N ' s ( 1 9 6 6 , 1967a and b , 1974) r o l e was o f t h e g r e a t e s t i m p o r t a n c e .

T h e e x a m i n a t i o n o f the m i t e f a u n a o f h o u s e - d u s t s a m p l e s c o l l e c t e d f r o m the h o u s e s o f a s t h m a t i c p a t i e n t s has been g o i n g o n f o r l a s t 10 y e a r s i n H u n g a r y . N e a r l y 40 000 m i t e s have been e x a m i n e d a n d i d e n t i f i e d . O u r p r e v i o u s r e s u l t s w e r e r e p o r t e d i n 1973 a n d 1978 (SE­B E S , S Z Ő C S K A , H A L M A I a n d K I S S - T Ó T H , 1973 , H A L M A I , 1978 ) . D e r m a t o p h a g o i d e s p t e r o ­ n y s s i n u s i s the d o m i n a n t s p e c i e s a l s o i n o u r c o u n t r y . I t ' s p r o p o r t i o n i s v a r i a b l e d e p e n d i n g on the p l a c e o f c o l l e c t i o n ( a r t i c l e i n p r e p a r a t i o n ) .

I n the c o u r s e o f the r o u t i n e e x a m i n a t i o n s a v e r y c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s p e c i m e n w a s f o u n d i n M a r c h 1979 i n the f i r s t p o r t i o n o f t h e h o u s e - d u s t s a m p l e c o l l e c t e d b y a v a c u u m c l e a n e r i n an a s t h m a t i c p a t i e n t ' s h o m e at T ö r ö k s z e n t m i k l ó s . S ince i t w a s the o n l y f e m a l e s p e c i m e n a m o n g m a n y t h o u s a n d s o f m i t e s s h o w i n g a v e r y s t r i k i n g s t r u c t u r e , we g i v e a d e s c r i p t i o n o f i t h e r e u n d e r .

I t i s m o s t s i m i l a r t o D e r m a t o p h a g o i d e s p t e r o n y s s i n u s , (both a r e i l l u s t r a t e d s ide b y s i d e ) . T h e h a b i t u s p i c t u r e s ( F i g s 3 a n d 4) show the s i m i l a r i t y a n d / o r i d e n t i t y o f the g e n e r a l f e a t u r e s ( m e a s u r e m e n t s and d i m e n s i o n s o f body and l e g s , r e g u l a r c u t i c u l a r s t r i a t i o n , ab ­sence o f t e g m e n and h y s t e r o s o m a l s h i e l d , f e a t u r e o f s c a p u l a r setae a n d p o s t e r i o r v u l v a r l i p s , d e v e l o p m e n t o f e p i g y n i u m ) , a n d a l s o t he m o s t i m p o r t a n t d i f f e r e n c e : t he s t r u c t u r e o f the e p i m e r e s . I n s t e a d o f the s t r o n g l y s c l e r o t i z i e d , f l a t a r c h e s o f t he " n o r m a l " s p e c i m e n s t h e r e a r e s t e r e o s c o p i c , c l u b - l i k e s t r u c t u r e s . T h e s e a r e r e g u l a r , s y m m e t r i c , b e i n g p r e s e n t a t t he p l a c e o f a U the e p i m e r e s , g i v i n g a c h a r a c t e r i s t i c p a t t e r n on bo th ( d o r s a l a n d v e n t r a l ) s i d e s ( F i g s 1 and 2 ) . T h e p u n c t a t e d c o x a l s c l e r o t i z a t i o n e x i s t s , bu t t h a t i s m u c h f i n e r a n d w e a k e r ( s a m e on l e g s ) .

T h e f o r m o f t he p r o p o d o s o m a l s h i e l d i s s l i g h t l y c h a n g e d . I n s t e a d o f the r e g u l a r p o s ­t e r i o r a r c h i t has a s y m m e t r i c , i r r e g u l a r , s o m e w h a t l e s s d e f i n i t e b o r d e r s ( h o w e v e r , i t i s w i t h i n t h e l i m i t o f n o r m a l v a r i a t i o n ) . T h e p l a c e , l e n g t h a n d r a t e o f the s c a p u l a r se tae a r e q u i t e s i m i l a r , but t h e i r bases have no s c l e r o t i z a t i o n ( F i g s 5 a n d 7 ) . T h e c u t i c u l a r s t r i a t i o n i s r e g u l a r ; i t has a l s o 2 o r 3 s t r i a e r u n n i n g b e t w e e n se tae sc . and sc .

T h e g e n e r a l f e a t u r e o f the g e n i t a l o p e n i n g a n d the p o s t e r i o r l i p o f the v u l v a , the p l a c e and l e n g t h o f the g e n i t a l se tae a r e t h e s a m e , bu t the d e v e l o p m e n t , a r c h a n d s c l e r o t i z ­a t i o n o f the e p i g y n i u m a r e w e a k e r ( F i g s 6 a n d 8 ) ,

T h e s t r u c t u r e o f t he s u p r a c o x a l se tae i s q u i t e s i m i l a r , h o w e v e r , t h e y a r e f i n e r and t h i n n e r ( F i g s 9 and 1 0 ) . S p e c i a l , s m a l l , g l o b u l a r s t r u c t u r e s e x i s t a t the base o f the U n d e p i ­m e r e s ( p e r h a p s w i t h s e n s o r y f u n c t i o n ) ( F i g . 1 2 ) .

B u r s a c o p u l a t r i x o f the D e r m a t o p h a g o i d e s p t e r o n y s s i n u s i s s h o w n f r o m d i f f e r e n t v i e w s ( F i g s 1 1 , 13 a n d 1 5 ) . One can o b s e r v e the c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s o m b r e r o - l i k e f o r m , s t r o n g s c l e r o t i z a t i o n o f the c e n t r e a n d f r a m e w o r k , 1 2 - 1 4 " r a d i i " o f the i n t e r n a l o p e n i n g , w i t h a f ine o u t e r zone l i k e " p e t a l s " o r t o n g u e s o f f l a m e , the t h i n , l o n g t u b e , and the s m a l l , s c l e r o t i z e d cap a r o u n d i t ' s e x t e r n a l o p e n i n g . T h e d i f f e r e n c e c a n be o b s e r v e d a t the i n t e r n a l o p e n i n g : i t i s s m a l l e r , the c e n t r e i s l e s s s c l e r o t i z e d , the n u m b e r o f the " r a d i i " i s m u c h l e s s ( o n l y 7 ) , and the c h a r a c t e r i s t i c b o r d e r zone e x i s t s , bu t the " t o n g u e s o f f l a m e " a r e m u c h s m a l l e r a n d f i n e r ( F i g s 14 and 1 6 ) .

T h e w e a k e r s c l e r o t i z a t i o n i s a g e n e r a l f e a t u r e , p r o b a b l y due to an i m m a t u r e s t a g e .
