Tracing the Roots

IN 2012, SHELL CELEBRATED 50 YEARS OF QUALITY OPERATIONS IN THE SHELL TABANGAO REFINERY. ITS INITIAL OPENING IN 1962 MADE SHELL A COMPLETE DOWNSTREAM BUSINESS ENGAGED IN THE TRADING, TRANSPORT, DISTRIBUTION, MANUFACTURE, AND REFINING OF PETROLEUM. TODAY, THE REFINERY IS CONSIDERED A TOP PROVIDER OF QUALITY OIL AND FUEL PRODUCTS AND HAS WON GLOBAL AND NATIONAL AWARDS.

The 50th anniversary celebration was a tribute to the refinery’s partners and stakeholders who have been at the forefront of innovation - continuously improving process technologies to deliver operational excellence, thereby ensuring asset reliability and product quality.

The Tabangao start-up team, community members, staff and Shell Executives, retirees, and external stakeholders joined a fiesta-inspired event where Shell Tabangao Refinery’s partners and stakeholders were recognised for their unwavering support and dedication to the company since its maiden operation. Among the awardees were local government organisations (LGUs), academes, medical and dental organisations, contractors, employees, and retirees’ associations.

The event was held to honour the people whose hard work, team spirit, and brilliance have paved the way for creating and maintaining the refinery’s operational excellence – a pillar in building Shell’s reputation and accomplishments.

REALITY.

In January 2012, Shell Philippines Exploration, B.V. (SPEX) completed its 2012 Operational Excellence (OE). Members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and key personnel from various departments participated during the week-long final phase of the review which had a three-fold objective: to test if the SPEX Malampaya Asset is meeting Shell OE standards by reviewing compliance with the Minimum Requirements; to identify opportunities for world-class performance; and to find Best Practices for sharing worldwide. The review was a major step to assessing the effectiveness of the company in achieving operational excellence in four major areas: production, people, plant, and process.

Page 8: Sd in action 2012 7 (2)

8

Promoting a culture of excellence

The review results indicated that despite more stringent requirements last year, there was an improvement in SPEX operational excellence, scoring 68% compared to 60% in 2009. In addition, the team concluded that improvement in four major areas of opportunity would have the most impact: learning and development, information management, regional support, and cost management.

Another testament to Shell’s dedication to operational excellence is its aim to continually improve its facilities in order to meet growing demands and to maintain its competitive edge. Central to this goal is the ongoing development of the Shell-operated Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project in Palawan. The project is a joint undertaking between the Philippine national government and the private sector, spearheaded by the Department of Energy (DoE), and developed and operated by Shell Philippines Exploration, B.V. (SPEX) on behalf of Joint Venture Partners Chevron Malampaya LLC and the Philippine National Oil Company-Exploration Corporation (PNOC-EC).

To guarantee safety and preparedness, the Malampaya Phase 3 (MP3) and Keppel Subic Shipyard, Inc. underwent a Yard Readiness Review prior to the actual fabrication of MP3‘s Depletion Compression Platform. The Keppel Subic Shipyard is the site of the fabrication, installation, and integration of the substructure and topside modules of the depletion compression platform (DCP) to support the completion of MP3.

The Yard Team passed the review, indicating its readiness to commence the work needed in terms of HSSE, QA/QC, Resources, and Tools and Equipment in accordance with Contract Requirements.

The actual construction of the substructure and topside modules of the DCP for MP3 commenced in December, and was celebrated during a “Strike Steel” ceremony held by the Malampaya Joint Venture Partners. The project is another milestone for Shell, as it is expected to ensure the steady supply of natural gas to power the Luzon electricity grid, generate at least 1,200 local jobs, and bring technical expertise into the country.

All through these advances, Shell adheres to its principle of excellence by guaranteeing the safety of its staff and the community in which it operates. In fact, this year marked the 11th year of maintaining a flawless safety record – operations without any significant incident or accident reported - for the Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant (MOGP) in Batangas. The MOGP is a crucial facility of the Malampaya Project that employs state-of-the-art technology to harness indigenous natural gas for power generation.

SPEX officials and guests of honour lead the Strike Steel ceremony on December 7, 2012 to officially begin construction of the substructure and topside modules of the Depletion Compression Platform of the Keppel Subic Shipyard in Subic, Zambales

Promoting a culture of excellence

Shell recognises that all past achievements can be credited to hardworking people who have taken part in its endeavours through the years. At the same time, Shell is certain that future success depends on its most important resource – its people. This is why Shell devotes much time and resources to improving the talents, skills, knowledge, and expertise of its employees.

The success of Shell’s commitment and relentless effort towards Operational Excellence and continuous business improvement rest on its ability to empower individuals to achieve their individual and collective goals.

To align individual targets to those of the company‘s for the next three years and to foster teamwork and camaraderie in SPEX, Local Senior Upstream Representative, Asset Manager and Managing Director Sebastian Quiniones, Jr. led members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to a series of meetings spent on sharing current knowledge and identifying challenges, opportunities, and behaviours. Called “Powering Our Future Together,” the programme was launched to provide employees awareness of the opportunities ahead and the initiatives in addressing challenges to provide role clarity and coaching, and to seek input and personal commitment from everyone in the team.

Shell also aims to provide technical training to its employees to help them improve in their work, and to collectively bring the company to the next level of excellence. This year, the Downstream Finance department held various Downstream Finance Differentiator activities to deepen understanding on differentiator activities. This was a critical move as these differentiators play an active part in driving business performance. The project was held to help the teams learn from one another, and to maximise the Finance team’s impact by building on existing best practices and initiatives, and drive excellence across the whole organisation.

The fruits of these efforts are expected to ensure the continuity of Shell’s success, and its ability to cater to its clients. As important as Shell’s commitment to sustainable development is its ability to first secure sustainability within the organisation.

Shell recognises that to realise sustainable development, it must not only design and implement the proper programmes, but also warrant their continuity. Thus, Shell seeks to embed a culture of excellence within the organisation through continuous research, product development, and investment on training of its employees.

THE FUTUREGROWING

Green Growth Within

Now faced with faster economic growth, changing consumption patterns, urbanisation, and industrialisation, the country is in for an increased demand for energy. As a major energy supplier that banks on its experience of almost 100 years, Shell recognises that meeting growing demands is a key challenge coupled with the necessity to ensure environmental sustainability.

Environmental issues, such as climate change and depletion of resources, are increasingly affecting many people and the future of the planet. Thus, Shell recognises that partnering with government, customers, and other stakeholders will help draw a growth trajectory that can keep economic, social, and environmental concerns in line and in balance.

To help ensure environmental sustainability, Shell is proactively seeking to reduce the negative effects of energy generation and transportation; develop innovative energy sources; raise awareness among employees, partners, and consumers; and ensure health and safety in its processes and delivery.

SHELL TAKES AN ACTIVE ROLE IN SUPPORTING THE GROWTH OF THE COUNTRY, NOT ONLY BY POWERING COMMUNITIES AND INDUSTRIES, BUT ALSO BY PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT.

Shell has been steadfast in its effort to guarantee industrial safety in order to reduce or effectively eliminate negative environmental externalities in its operations. In fact, Shell has received numerous awards over the years, a proof of its success in fulfilling its commitment to environmental sustainability.

In 2012, three facilities of Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP) won the Industrial Safety Award for their outstanding safety records during the 45th National Industrial Safety Convention organised by the Safety Organisation of the Philippines, Inc. (SOPI), a leading non-profit and non-government organisation dedicated to protecting life and promoting health.

The awardees were Shell Business Service Centre (SBSC) - Manila for over 15.7 million man-hours of safety; Shell Pandacan Terminal for 6.1 million man-hours of safety; and the Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant (MOGP) in Batangas for 1.1 million man-hours of safety. The three winning facilities were recognised for their best safety practices in the workplace and excellent performance on Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE).

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) also recognised Shell Anibong Terminal and the Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant as model green facilities for their superior environmental performance across business operations. After a stringent evaluation by the DENR, the Shell Anibong Terminal in Tacloban and the Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant (MOGP) were named as

Shell Anibong Terminal Manager Jeffrey Devilles and SPEX Environmental Engineer Darlito Guamos, together with SPEX Finance Director Jeng Pascual, HSE & SD Manager Upstream Philippines Joey Tinga, and SPEX Operations Engineer Nino Navarro receiving an award from DENR Undersecretary Manuel D. two ‘most environmentally responsible’ facilities. The recognition came with the DENR Seal of Approval under the Track 1 Category of the Philippine Environment Partnership Programme (PEPP), a partnership programme involving DENR and other environment-related agencies supporting industry self-regulation towards improved environmental performance.

The Seal of Approval signifies superior environmental performance, and as an incentive, the DENR will relax its rules on the submission requirements for reports of the MOGP and Shell Anibong Terminal and 16 other awardees. DENR will also automatically extend the validity of permits and ease procedures in securing environmental compliance certificates for project expansion of the recipients under PEPP Track 1 category.

“There is no single solution to the energy challenge. However, with commitment from the energy industry, transport companies, governments, and policymakers to work together and with customers, we have taken the important first steps towards finding a truly sustainable and viable solution.” This was the challenge posed by Mark Gainsborough, Shell Executive Vice-President for Global Commercial. For more efficient solutions to fuel energy needs, Shell has provided a venue to test and showcase its ideas through Shell Eco-marathon, an annual super-mileage competition that challenges students to build, design, and test energy-efficient vehicles. In 2012, a total of 119 teams had participated in Shell Eco-marathon, with 81 entries in the Prototype category and 38 in the UrbanConcept category. The Prototype category invites student-teams to build futuristic cars – streamlined vehicles focused on maximising fuel-efficiency through

innovative design elements such as drag reduction. The UrbanConcept category focuses on more-roadworthy, fuel-efficient vehicles.

Aside from being a venue for students’ inventions, the event has become an opportunity for Shell to educate the participants about energy challenges and sustainable development. Gainsborough highlighted the significance of the Shell Eco-marathon against a backdrop of exponentially-increasing world energy demand. This makes it critical for energy companies, the transport industry, businesses, governments, the youth and academe to work together to meet the mobility challenges of the future. Addressing the youth, he emphasised that, “With the rapid population growth and urbanisation in Asia, demands on mobility are set to increase dramatically, and we will be challenged to move the world’s growing number of people and goods safely, cost-effectively,

and with reduced impact on the environment, whether by land, air, or sea.”

In a different venue but with the same end, Shell launched a new educational tool to teach children in the Philippines about the importance of building a sustainable energy future.

As part of the continuing advocacy partnership with the Department of Education and Mary Lindbert International Inc., the Shell Comprehensive School Programme, distributed copies of a specially-designed New Energy Future workbook to a number of public elementary schools in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Batangas province. The launch of the workbook was the latest development in the educational campaign launched in 2010 which aimed to integrate energy consciousness and energy responsibility into the curriculum.

Shell also actively supports research initiatives aimed at improving environmental assessment and management. In 2012, Shell also forged a partnership with Clean Air Asia (CAI-Asia), the premiere air quality network for Asia. Asian Development Bank, World Bank, and USAID funded CAI-Asia’s Air Dispersion Study. The study involves monitoring and assessing air quality in the Philippines in order to set up a viable framework for air quality and green house gas management.

However, Shell seeks to go beyond raising awareness through education by leading the change by example. Shell reaches out to communities to help them realise the importance of addressing environmental needs. It also demonstrates ways by which they can help, no matter how simple. Shell has continuously assisted communities with programmes that not only raise awareness of environmental concerns, but at the same time give incentive for cooperation to achieve goals.

One such project is the Bawas Basura sa Barangay (Reduce Waste in the Community) or Triple B project, a solid waste management programme implemented in Shell Pandacan Depot and its surrounding communities. Started in 2000, the project was launched

to reduce the waste generated by communities through the application of waste segregation schemes and the establishment of a local waste management system. Shell provided technical and capacity-building trainings, information and education campaigns, and established a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for the barangays. As of 2012, Triple B has had a total of 573 beneficiaries and recorded a net income of PhP 57,000 with an average annual collection of 33 tons of recyclables from the community and Shell Pandacan Oil Terminal. Seventy three percent of these recyclables come from the terminal and 17% from surrounding households.

Shell sought to reach out to more people this year. In fact, in October, the company led 529 volunteers who participated in the 2012 International Coastal Clean-up Activity, an annual initiative of Ocean Conservancy, a non-profit organisation working to conserve the world’s oceans and dependent communities. Dubbed as “Tracking Trash II,” the project was a joint effort of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. (PSPC) and the PilipinasShell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI). The project aimed to raise awareness and inspire volunteers to do their share in keeping the community

clean. They were given briefing on how to document the clean-up by itemising the trash collected in data cards for submission to Ocean Conservancy. They were also taught how to segregate biodegradable from non-biodegradable wastes before these were collected for dumping at the landfill. Leaders in Shell considered the project a huge success because the volunteers were not only able to collect over five tons of garbage, but also realised their collective responsibility to keep their surroundings clean and healthy.

Shell is also active in promoting renewable energy sources. In 2012, Shell’s efforts helped empower Palawan communities. It promotes sustainable energy through solar energy. This initiative was given recognition by the Solar Energy Foundation, which bestowed Shell the first ever Solar Village Award. The award was conferred to the company for sending the largest contingents in the 2012 Run for Light Marathon, which gathered a crowd of 500 participants despite heavy downpour. The award came with SunTransfer 1 solar lanterns for Shell’s chosen beneficiaries. Shell runners won a total of 30 solar lanterns which the company distributed to barangay health workers in indigenous communities in Palawan. The solar lanterns provide safe and non-expensive light to off-grid villages.

These achievements affirm the positive role that Shell plays in people-based movements. It certainly deepens Shell’s commitment to being a leader in providing energy. Most importantly, it carves a path of sustainable growth through innovations, research, and a real concern for its stakeholders and the environment.

SAFETYNOW AND ALWAYS

Safeguarding the Workplace

IN SHELL, UPHOLDING SAFETY IS AN EVERYDAY ENDEAVOUR. WITH OPERATIONS THAT REQUIRE DELICATE PROCESSES AND INFINITE CARE, SAFETY IS ALWAYS AT THE FOREFRONT. WE STRIVE TO ENSURE A SAFE WORKPLACE FOR OUR PERSONNEL AND EXTEND THIS CULTURE OF SAFETY TO OUR PARTNERS, CUSTOMERS, AND THE COMMUNITY.

WE ADVOCATE SAFETY— NOW AND ALWAYS.

IN THE WORKPLACE, IT IS OUR PRIORITY TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE AND OPERATE WITHOUT FATALITIES. OUR COMMITMENT HAS GAINED THE ATTENTION OF MANY, AS VARIOUS ORGANISATIONS AWARDED SHELL FOR ITS DEDICATION TO PROMOTING SAFETY.

The Federation of the Philippine Industries, Inc. (FPI), an umbrella organisation for Philippine manufacturers and producers, gave

Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP) the Most Outstanding Corporation Award in the practice of Health and Safety on November 22. Shell demonstrated exemplary practices in waste management, optimum use of resources, health and safety, and Corporate Social Responsibility.

The Shell Business Service Centre (SBSC) Manila won two awards: the Award of Excellence from the Safety Organisation of the

14

Philippines Inc. (SOPI) on November 22; and the 2012 Safety Milestone (SMILE) Recognition Award from the Department of Labour and Employment (DOLE)—Bureau of Working Conditions (BWC) on December 6. DOLE gave the award in recognition of the effective implementation of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) practices which resulted to No Lost Time Accident (LTA), while SOPI attributed the award to the 15,760,764 man-hours recorded without LTA

Page 15: Sd in action 2012 7 (2)

from January 2010 to September 2012. SBSC is the first BPO/Shared Services Company to be given the SOPI award. Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX) received three commendations from the 8th Gawad Kalusugan at Kaligtasan (GKK) Awards conducted by DOLE on December 5. An Award of Distinction in the Institutional Category was given to both Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant (MOGP) in Batangas and the Shallow Water Platform in Palawan. Isagani Rodriguez, Jr., SPEX Safety and Environment Delivery Team Leader, received an Award of Honour in the Individual Category. In addition to the GKK Award, MOGP was also the recipient of the Perfect Safety Record from SOPI. Shell Pandacan terminal, which tallied 6.1 million man-hours of safety, won an Industrial Safety Award from SOPI.

Aside from these awards, some of Shell’s businesses also achieved milestones in

injury-free operations. The Lubricants Supply Chain PH attained a major safety milestone of three million man-hours LTA-free operations in a span of four and a half years. The Pandacan Depot Services, Inc. (PDSI), which serves as the service provider and operator of Shell oil depots in Pandacan, also celebrated a milestone with nine million man-

Shell has a lot of programmes advocating safety, and adding a new one would only serve to make its operations better. Our contractor AECOM and subcontractor Waste Solutions and Management Services, Inc. (WSMSI) instituted the Safety Man Award in the Pandacan remediation site. For the project, workers are encouraged to submit HSSE observations, interventions, and near miss reports, thereby inculcating a behaviour-based safety mindset. All reports are then discussed during daily toolbox meetings, ensuring that everyone knows the situation and upholds safety practices. Each week, the best report is selected, with the winner receiving a gift cheque and named as Safety Man of the Week. The programme is highly successful as proven by the 22,228 man-hours in five months without any incident.

hours without LTA in accordance with their motto of “Sustaining Excellence through Safety.”

These awards and milestones were the fruits of Shell’s commitment to safety as it strives to always achieve safe operations in all of its worksites.

For us, zero is not just a number. It represents our dedication to the protection of all our stakeholders. It embodies our commitment to safety practices. To reiterate this goal, Shell celebrated Safety Day globally on June 19, 2012. With the theme “Time for Safety,” the day is a celebration of achievements and a reminder that each one has a role in building a strong safety culture.

In Shell House, insights on how to observe safety in everyday life were shared. Shell Aviation Manila and the Tabangao Refinery were lauded for their excellent safety performance, bringing pride to Shell operations in the Philippines. In Pandacan, the people were encouraged to adopt the mindset of not just being content with no incidents, but to think and find ways on how to improve their safety performance.

Shell Business Service Centre (SBSC), Shell Tabangao Refinery, and Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX) all staged festive celebrations which reinforced the value of safety principles for an efficient business operations and minimising or preventing untoward incidents. SPEX held a celebration in all of its sites: Batangas Supply Base, Malampaya Onshore Gas Plant, Shallow Water Platform in Palawan, and in its corporate office in Alabang.

The Shell Group produced a short film showing the importance of making “Time for Safety” and its benefits to the business. The film served as one of the highlights of the various celebrations. For the finale, Safety Day awards were given to Shell personnel who made exemplary contributions to Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE). From the 72 nominations, Katrina May Diola-Tia received the highest honour of Summa cum Laude with her project: The HSSE Board is the 2012 Retail Strategy for Goal Zero. Her work is a monitoring tool for each site’s progress in their Goal Zero Journey. Shell Retailer Terry Valladores was awarded Magna cum Laude with his “Advocacy on Security” which addresses robbery incidents in his cluster.

In the past decades, road mishaps and accidents had risen to alarming levels, prompting the United Nations to declare the years 2011-2020 as Decade of Action for Road Safety (DARS), with the aim of educating the people on public road safety to reduce road fatalities by 50%. Much of Shell’s operations rely heavily on road transport and road safety is also one of its advocacies. Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP) is one of the founding members of the Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership (PGRSP). Together with the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) and other multi-sector stakeholders, Shell commemorated the

It is widely known that most road accidents are caused by human error. As such, Shell and its social development arm, the Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc., (PSFI) have partnered with the Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership, non-government organisations, and international and local agencies to help reduce road accidents through educational seminars and workshops.

Recognising the benefits of these activities, Shell conducted workshops on June 23, 2012 for PATODA tricycle drivers in Pandacan, in partnership with Safe-T Ryders.

first anniversary of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety on May 13 at the Liwasang Aurora in Quezon City Memorial Circle. Shell showcased its road safety advocacy programme, joined the Walkathon, Run-relay and Bike-athon, and featured demonstrations on the standard safety features and checks conducted on lorries.

Shell also participated in the 42nd National Road Safety Convention organised by the Safety Organisation of the Philippines, Inc. (SOPI). The conference served as a venue for exchanging ideas to address the growing impact of road traffic crashes; to review the progress of projects; and to share information and good practices. Shell shared its best practices on Fatigue Management and Driver Behaviour.

This was a follow through to the successful practical driving exercises and defensive driving workshops conducted among representatives from the public transport, truck and lorry drivers, and safety officers in September 2011. Many of the commuters in Manila depend on tricycles for transport. As such, their lives literally depend on the driving skills of tricycle drivers. The drivers reviewed the traffic rules and signs and the Tricycle Regulatory Unit policies. For a more practical approach, they had an “alcohol simulation” activity wherein they wore fatal goggles to describe

Educating Drivers

how alcohol impairs their vision and balance.

Shell Retailers initiated the INGAT (Take Care) campaign that extended the culture of safety to all Shell customers. The simple sticker campaign was implemented to remind professional drivers to be careful in their day-to-day driving, with messages like, “wag makipagkarerahan para buhay mo’y di masayang.” The results of the project were encouraging: a 30% increase in Pepeng Pasada Club (PPC) acquisition, 6% in Diesel, and 12% in Unleaded volume growth.

17

Page 18: Sd in action 2012 7 (2)

Road safety goes beyond educating drivers. It entails educating the pedestrians too. In Shell, it is deemed best to start with children. According to statistics, around 96,000 Filipino children are injured or killed every year because of road-related accidents. On the average, about 263 children are involved in road incidents each day. These incidents could be avoided if the children know how to keep themselves safe. To spread awareness, Shell conducted workshops for children to disseminate road safety practices.

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC) and Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc. (PSFI) conducted the Batangas Road Safety Camp for Children, which is now on its fourth year. Over 300 public elementary and high school students in Batangas City attended the event which was filled with fun and informative activities. The children were taught about pedestrian and commuter safety, permits and licenses, road accident emergency response procedures, general road conduct, and motorcycle and bicycle safety. The programme is highly successful and is now replicated in Pandacan, Manila; Bacolod City, Negros Occidental; and Mandaue City, Cebu. Partners for the event included the Bureau of Fire Protection-Batangas City, Land Transportation Office-CALABARZON, DepEd Batangas City, Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Team-Batangas, SM City Batangas, Transportation Development and Regulatory Office, City Public Information Office, and the Batangas City Government.

PSFI, together with PGRSP, had another pioneer programme—the Road Safety Flash Card Project. The project oriented school teachers and students from ten public elementary schools around Pandacan Terminal on pedestrian road safety. The Department of Education (DepEd) is set to implement the Flash Card project in all public schools in the country.

Globally, Shell provides fuel to almost 7, 000 aircrafts and refuels a plane every 12 seconds. Two are based in the Philippines—in Manila and in Pampanga. This year, Shell Aviation Manila achieved a remarkable victory. They were awarded the Goal Zero Double Platinum Award for exemplary Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) performance — a first in Asia. The award was given in recognition of the unit’s close to five years of Goal Zero Performance, achieving zero incidents

SPEX and PSPC have signed an agreement with the City Government of Batangas, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Barangay Ambulong, Batangas City to build a fire sub-station where Tabangao Refinery is located. The two-storey fire station will also house the office of the Neighbourhood Emergency Services Team (NEST). The fire station will make it easier for people to respond to fire incidents.

In another event, recognition was given to the courageous fire fighters who fulfill their work at the risk of their own safety and lives. On December 17, PSPC, in partnership with SOPI and BFP, recognised eight of the country’s most outstanding fire fighters. The awardees were selected by a panel of judges from various organisations during a year-long selection process. Each winner received a Plaque of Recognition, cash incentives worth PhP 100,000 from Shell, accident insurance, and a nomination to the Civil Service Commission’s “Lingkod Bayan” Awards for 2012. Shell initially partnered with SOPI for this project in 2007, and became a major partnerin 2009.

A meaningful anniversary

CELEBRATION

PFSI’s 30th anniversary was kicked off by a grand celebration on August 15 during which PSFI founder and first country chairman of Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP), Cesar Buenaventura, shared stories about the foundation since it began operating in the early 80’s. He highlighted the foundation’s success in gaining international recognition as the private sector pioneer in implementing the nationwide programme, Movement Against Malaria (MAM). Current PSFI Executive Director Edgar Veron-Cruz added with pride that the substantial Global Fund grant of US$14.3 to the MAM programme which covers 40 provinces and nine cities all over the Philippines enabled the foundation to procure treated mosquito nets and residual insecticides and to conduct aggressive campaigns, among others. He also thanked the Shell management for its support.

Behind the numbers shown in the table are stories of triumphs, empowerment, and the will to help and work with communities around the country through innovative programmes that have significantly contributed to nation-building. SciP Country Chairman Edgar Chua enthusiastically shared the formula behind the success of the foundation, which is among the most respected in the country today: real and sincere service rendered by a high-calibre and dedicated workforce rather than mere dole out, and the integration of values formation in all the programmes.

Buenaventura, Chua, and Veron-Cruz concluded the mini-celebration with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to open the exhibit which showcased the vast contributions of PSFI in support of the government’s national development goals.

LIVES AND HOMES

A SUPER TYPHOON,A HUGE EFFORT TO REBUILD

Of the six to nine tropical cyclones or storms that make a landfall within the Philippine area of responsibility from June to October every year, three to four are usually classified as super typhoons, whose powerful winds and torrential rains that last for hours flatten walls, unfasten roofs, sweep away houses, uproot trees, turn bridges into dams and rivers into raging floods, destroy crops, among others. With thousands of people displaced and the livelihood of hundreds of farmers destroyed, typhoon-related costs are indeed staggering, and thus, draining the government’s resources.

Fortunately, immediate assistance in the form of food, clothes, temporary shelter, clean water, and hygiene facilities is never lacking and is always swift. Thanks to the generosity of countless citizens and institutions, who, through foundations, are quick to lend a helping hand.

However, there is a need to go beyond immediate help and embark on long-term projects such as relocating victims, building houses, repairing damaged infrastructures, and setting up disaster risk reduction programmes. Thus, in addition to the immediate financial assistance that Shell companies in the Philippines

Shell volunteers pack relief goods for typhoon victims

Page 24: Sd in action 2012 7 (2)

(SciP) gave and the relief operations that Shell employees carried out to assist the victims of typhoon Sendong which hit northern Mindanao in December 2011, Shell started using Royal Dutch Shell’s US$ 1million donation for rehabilitation efforts. The donation made was used to help rehabilitate the lives of over a thousand people and to rebuild some of the billions worth of infrastructure and agriculture areas that were destroyed. Together with local fund raising activities, this donation has enabled Shell to provide over PhP50 million for use in the aforementioned cause.

Shell expressed its commitment to help survivors and communities rise from the devastation by joining government officials, representatives from various private companies, non-government organisations (NGOs) and even from neighbouring countries in marking the 40th day after typhoon Sendong hit Northern Mindanao. The gathering, dubbed as “Bayanihan ng Bayan sa Iligan,” (One for Iligan) was held on January 25, 2012, a day which the city government declared as a day

Jannet Cabalhin, a single mother of two, used to enjoy a quiet life in Isla De Oro for 15 years, until the day typhoon Sendong almost took everything they owned. As one of GK recipients, she gratefully and cheerfully remarked, “The sudden and unexpected destruction left by the floods rendered us hopeless. We thought we could never rebuild our lives and regain our homes,” she said. “But today I am full of hope and joy…Thank you so much to Shell and to Gawad Kalinga Foundation. We’ll forever count the new home you’ve given us as a blessing of a lifetime!”

for volunteerism and solidarity.

In no time, this spirit of solidarity was expressed in deed as Shell partnered with Gawad Kalinga (GK) in providing new homes to Sendong victims. SciP Country Chairman Edgar Chua led the turnover of 122 houses to GK on December 19, 2012 in Brgy. Calaanan, Cagayan De Oro (CDO) City, a year after the devastation brought by typhoon Sendong. Chua announced that

Shell will donate an additional multi-purpose hall to complete the 200 GK houses that Shell committed to build. The project was completed by June 2013. A staunch partner of GK that builds not only homes, but also communities, Shell is consistently working with GK in providing long-term aid and rehabilitating communities badly affected by natural disasters.

While efforts to help survivors rise from last year’s catastrophe continue, the call to assist recent flood victims remains urgent. The call was not unheeded as Malampaya Foundation, Inc. (MFI) donated relief goods in August 2012 to 3,200 families living in several barangays in a Subic town that serves as home to Keppel-Subic, the fabrication yard contractor for the next stages of the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project. The town took the worst hit with 13 of its 16 barangays submerged in floodwater caused by torrential monsoon rains. Established in 2006, MFI is the social investment arm of the Malampaya Deepwater Gas-to-Power Project, the largest and most significant foreign investment and infrastructure project in Philippine history.

Moreover, Malampaya Joint Venture (JV) Partners through MFI gave PhP1 million each to ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya Foundation and GMA Kapuso Foundation to help fund the relief operations of these media foundations for the affected areas in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. The cheque handover was held on August 14 at the ABS-CBN and GMA Network offices. Similarly, SciP through PSFI gave PhP1 million each to DZMM TLC (Teaching, Learning, Caring), GMA Kapuso Foundation, and TV5 Alagang Kapatid Foundation, Inc. (AKFI). The turnover of the cheque to AKFI, which focused on providing basic necessities to families residing in communities most affected by recent destructive typhoons, was held at a simple ceremony at Shell House in Makati City. On August 14, 2012, in a live broadcast over DZMM’s “Aksyon Ngayon” programme hosted by Julius Babao, SciP Country Chairman Edgar Chua and PSFI Executive Director Edgar Veron-Cruz, announced Shell‘s various relief activities and turned over PhP1 million cheque donation which was used to purchase medicines for flood victims through DZMM TLC‘s Clinic on Wheels programme, a project that provides health care and educational services through the use of roving clinics and classrooms. Shell has been helping TLC’s operations by supplying fuel forTLC trucks.

Even more expressive of SciP’s genuine and sincere desire to alleviate the suffering of flood victims was Chua’s announcement of the cancellation of Shell Day to allocate the budget for this celebration for rehabilitation and social development projects.

Recognising Shell’s efforts, GMA Kapuso Foundation Mel Tiangco said, “Shell is one of the private companies who partnered with us to extend a helping hand. It warms our hearts and makes us more inspired. It goes without saying that they believe in us, in our capabilities that their donations will go a long way in helping affected families of the torrential monsoon rains. All in all, it still proves one thing - that we can depend on our fellowmen in times of calamity.”

A model of genuine public and private partnership in action, it has attracted more than 200 partners including government agencies, local businesses, private organizations, NGOs, local and international foundations, not to mention countless individuals. Volunteers adopt public schools and just before classes begin, they do clean ups and repairs for about one week. What volunteers share are their time, strength, and resources in kind.

For the year 2012, Silonay Elementary School in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro was Malampaya‘s Brigada Eskwela recipient. Shell volunteers were joined by a large number of parents and barangay residents, and together, they focused on the school’s sanitation by improving toilet and wash facilities. Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX) External Affairs Advisor, Melchor Aguilera, disclosed that the Brigada Eskwela in Silonay was the first in Calapan City and the school was chosen after a thorough assessment of its actual condition and needs. Carlos P. Garcia High School in Pandacan, Manila was another Brigada Eskwela beneficiary this year. Around 30 employees of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC), Shell Business Service Centre (SBSC) Manila, and PSFI joined other volunteers in cleaning and repainting the school’s walls and benches. The school’s principal, Dr. Imelda Faculin, personally thanked Shell for its continuous support, and happily noted, “Through your help, we would make them (the students) feel that they are loved and cared for, hence, they would be inspired to study better.” Headed by Frandy Martir of SBSC and Anthony Gamo of PSFI, the repainting of the fence wall and benches at the back of the school took half a day. Shell volunteers donated the unused materials they brought to the school.

The team included 33 doctors, eight dentists, and 20 nurses from partner medical institutions, namely, St. Patrick’s Hospital Medical Centre, Golden Gate General Hospital, Batangas Regional Hospital, Jesus of Nazareth Hospital, and Mary Mediatrix Medical Centre. The timing of the activity, which included the distribution of free medicines and free blood sugar examination for the first 130 registered patients, was perfect considering that many residents had been sick due to adverse weather conditions. To top it all, the Philippine Air Force got a well-known hairstylist and make-up artist in Batangas, Wham Ilagan, to provide free haircut to men, women, and children during the activity.

FLOURISHESA NEW PARTNERSHIP

Page 28: Sd in action 2012 7 (2)

This partnership is evidently not something short-term as volunteers from Fluor Daniel, Inc., Philippines and SPEX took part in a GAWAD KALINGA (GK) Build activity on September 22, 2012 at the GK Sta. Rita site in Las Piñas City. The event also served as a teambuilding event for a total of 32 volunteers from both companies, who spent the day jumpstarting the construction of two homes by hauling construction materials to the sites through a human chain, by mixing and pouring concrete, laying concrete hollow blocks, and ground levelling. Volunteers from Fluor and SPEX enjoyed a physically demanding yet fun day filled with camaraderie. The activity had been a rewarding experience for all the volunteers where they made new friends and strengthened existing relationships.

Ten year-old Rosemarie Padasas, a Grade 5 student, suffers from a congenital condition known as clubfoot. Despite this physical limitation, her teacher shared that she runs fast and is inclined towards the arts. With her new pair of orthopaedic shoes, who’s to say she couldn’t possibly run faster? Rosemarie cheerfully said during the handover, “I feel very happy that I now have shoes. My family could not afford to buy shoes so this means a lot to us. Thank you very much for your generosity,” On the other hand, 11 year-old Trixia Mendoza suffers from a form of cerebral palsy that affects the legs. Since her mother works as a household helper, it is her father who looks after her and carries her to wherever she needs to go. With a new wheelchair, it will be much easier to bring her to places where she needs to be. Her tearful parents were with her when the wheelchair was presented to her. Her father was very emotional and said that, “We have been praying for this for a long time!”

Not only has Shell gone beyond efforts to help alleviate countless people’s health problems by responding to the needs of individuals with disabilities, it also continues to forge new partnerships. Through a partnership with Fluor Daniel, Inc., Philippines, a world-class publicly traded engineering, procurement, construction, maintenance, and project management company, Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project gave a wheelchair to Rosemarie Padasas and a pair of orthopaedic shoes to Trixia Mendoza, students from Tabangao Elementary School in Batangas last September 19, 2012.

entrepreneurship, it also aims to establish socially relevant and high impact businesses that promote an environment of healthy competition.

Over a thousand social entrepreneurs, students, public and private partners and their employees with their families, GK supporters, and stakeholders gathered at the countryside expo, dubbed as “Eat, Pray, and Shop to end Poverty.” Giving people the opportunity to see the development of the GK Enchanted Farm, the event also attracted over 200 participants from SciP and PSFI alone who brought their families to take part in the celebration. Guests were given a chance to listen to experts during a plenary session and then a tour. They were treated to culinary delights prepared by the social entrepreneurs. They were also given an opportunity to buy various items such as fresh vegetables and fruits, homemade longganisa, handicrafts, salted golden duck eggs, and local

While a new partnership is beginning to flourish, an old partnership is getting stronger. On October 7, 2012, SciP Country Chairman Edgar Chua, GK Founder Tony Meloto, and PSFI Executive Director Edgar Veron-Cruz officially opened to the public the Shell Centre for Social Enterprise and Innovation (CSI) in a ribbon-cutting ceremony during the 2012 GK Countryside Expo at the GK Enchanted Farm in Angat, Bulacan. The event was part of GK‘s 9th anniversary celebration which was held to thank and honour its stakeholders and partners for their continued support. The Shell CSI is part of the Shell Social Investment Complex which also houses the Shell grass villas and cabanas. The centre is a venue for social entrepreneurs who produce affordable and high-quality Filipino products using organic Philippine-grown ingredients. Not only does it aim to promote a culture of

pastries. Finally they were offered different practical demonstrations such as chocolate making, tea brewing, golden egg colouring, cheese making, among others.

To date, Shell’s partnership with GK has resulted in four Shell-GK villages in Batangas, Southern Leyte, and Cagayan de Oro and 23 Shell GK Bayan-Anihan farms in the Bicol Region. Bayan-Anihan is GK‘s food sustenance programme that aims to eradicate hunger one family at a time by empowering GK residents to produce food for themselves. The partnership will bring about more results as the construction of 15 classrooms in Iligan that started last November 2012 will soon be completed. This project is part of Shell’s rehabilitation efforts in Iligan which was severely battered by typhoon Sendong.

The trainees were encouraged to share what they have learned from the training, which was designed to teach innovative methods of agriculture that focus on the use of indigenous materials, promote the sustainable benefits of crop production, and address the problem of costly commercial fertilizer and pesticides.

At the graduation rites on September 14, IFBS trainor Rose Fatagani provided the group with vegetable seeds, farming toolkits, and microbial inoculants to prepare them for their future farming projects. This project is part of Malampaya‘s anti-poverty commitment for Mindoro residents. Malampaya is an active partner of the Strategic Intervention and Community-Focused Action Towards Development (SICAD), a community-focused programme that brings both the national and local government‘s development efforts closer to the people.

Farms need farmers and farmers need training especially in the so-called Integrated Farming Bio-Systems (IFBS) approach which Shell has been providing to agricultural communities. This year, 32 farmers completed the five-day IFBS training in the municipality of Roxas in Southern Oriental Mindoro sponsored by MFI, in collaboration with Oriental Mindoro‘s Provincial Agriculturist Office (PAGO) and the Office of Roxas Mayor Jackson C. Indeed, the benefits are mutual. In fact, everyday should be a day of thanksgiving. One such day of thanksgiving literally took place on February 2, 2012. To express its gratitude to the University of Asia and the Pacific’s (UA&P) Center for Research and Communication (CRC) team for making the Shell Sustainable Development in Action 2010 report and Youth Congress a success, SciP‘s Communications team hosted a thanksgiving tour and lunch for them at Shell Pandacan terminal.

The day started with a presentation of Pandacan‘s operations, followed by a talk on the terminal’s social performance in line with Pandacan and PSFI‘s sustainable development programmes, namely Triple B (Bawas Basura sa Barangay), Triple P (Panahiang Pangkabuhayan sa Pandacan), and PAMANA

These informative sessions were followed by an educational van tour led by former Shell NGO & Stakeholder Relations Manager Ronald Suarez. The UA&P-CRC team explored the terminal’s infrastructures as well as appreciated the Shell Linear Park and the colourful handiworks of Triple P seamstresses.

The Park was developed as part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the three oil companies (Shell, Petron, and

Pushing the boundaries offuel-efficient driving

Shell Eco-marathon is Shell’s programme on smarter mobility and it is gaining strength and popularity as it gathers the region’s brightest students in the global quest to design, build, and test energy efficient cars that would run the farthest distance using the least amount of energy. Ronald “Suiee” Suarez, former Shell NGO and Stakeholder Relations Manager said, “The event is Shell’s unique way of providing an opportunity to push the boundaries of design and fuel-efficient driving as well as build the cars of tomorrow—an important part of Shell’s response to the energy challenge—to meet the world’s growing energy consumption in a responsible and sustainable way.”

The Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2012, held from July 4-7 in Sepang International Racing Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was participated in by 119 student-teams from 18 countries across Asia and the Middle East.

Judge Lee Grant of the Southwest Research Institute commented that the winner “had the most advanced telemetry system I have seen at Shell Eco-marathon Asia.” This complement went to the Philippine team, De La Salle University (DLSU) Eco-marathon Team Proto that won the “Technical Innovation Award.” The other Philippine team, Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) Mileage, stood out with their collaborative spirit, positive dynamics, and highly energised attitudes in the regional competition. They were given the “Best in Team Spirit Award.”

THE LEVEL OF ENERGY AND TEAM SPIRIT EXUDED IN THE PIT AND ON THE TRACK HAS BEEN TRULY AMAZING. IT HAS SHOWN THAT WITH TEAM WORK, IMPRESSIVE RESULTS CAN BE ACHIEVED. ONE CAN’T HELP BUT BE OPTIMISTIC THAT ACHIEVING SMARTER MOBILITY IS NOT TOO DISTANT A DREAM WHEN OUR FUTURE IS ALREADY THINKING OF SOLUTIONS TODAY.”

Students from Thailand emerged with the best run at Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2012 with a mileage of 2,903 km/litre – the equivalent of driving from Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi. In the Urban Concept category, Team Cikal Cakrasvarna from Indonesia achieved the highest mileage of 196.3 km/litre, running on gasoline.

Malaysia Country Chairman Iain Lo commended the youth saying, “The level of energy and team spirit exuded in the pit and on the track has been truly amazing. It has shown that with team work, impressive results can be achieved. One can’t help but be optimistic that achieving smarter mobility is not too distant a dream when our future is already thinking of solutions today.”

Surely, the engineering students did not only gain exposure and experience in the competition, but also made a mark in the history of energy efficiency.

Be MOBILE,and be SMART

Gearing up for the next run

From 2014 to 2016, Shell Eco-marathon Asia will be staged in the Philippines. This was formalised through the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on December 12, 2012 by Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP) Country Chairman Edgar O. Chua and Department of Tourism (DoT) Secretary Ramon Jimenez.

Held in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, the competition awards student-teams that design and run ultra-efficient cars that go the farthest distance using the least amount of energy. The design-build-test challenge promotes innovation and technology among the youth by engaging them in a competition that pushes the boundaries of

After the National Student Conference on October 23, 2012 at SMX Convention Centre in Pasay City, the University of Asia and the Pacific in Pasig City hosted a lecture on smarter mobility on October 24, 2012. Shell Malaysia Senior Fuels Scientist, Colin Chin, together with Shell Eco-Marathon Asia alumnus, Engineer Jericho Rivera, who is now Shell Philippines Exploration, B.V. (SPEX) Maintenance Engineering Engineer, urged more than 100 high school and college students to be aware of smarter mobility issues and to work together to help the planet. “Innovation and collaboration are the key!” was the important message they delivered at the lecture.

Smarter mobility is Shell’s campaign to find innovative ways of helping move the growing number of people and goods efficiently and to meet growing demand for transport while limiting carbon dioxide emissions. Colin Chin warned the students, “The number of vehicles will surge from 800 million units today to 2 billion vehicles in the next 40 years, which means that various sources of energy will be needed to meet the demand. Moreover, the world’s population is expected to reach nine billion by 2050, thus increasing the demand to move people and goods more efficiently.” He added that the world’s energy mix in the next 40 years will continue to be supplied by fossil fuels (about 60%) but also noted that energy from renewable sources is expected to increase by 5-10 times.

Following the successful Sustainable Development Youth Congress organised by Shell with UA&P-CRC in 2011, the youth converged for the second time at the Youth Congress 2012. This time, almost 300 university students and youth delegates, including Shell scholars from Metro Manila and Batangas province, gathered at UA&P to discuss the theme “Strengthening human capital through sustainable development.”

In his keynote address to the youth, Shell companies in the Philippines (SciP) Country Chairman Edgar Chua emphasised, “Wherever we operate, we work to reduce environmental and social impacts, safeguarding the health and safety of our employees and neighbours, and reducing disruptions in the community. Our commitment to Sustainable Development is manifested in our products, smarter infrastructure, efficient operations, and how we manage our supply chains. We share the benefits of our operations, including helping to develop local economies through supplier contracts and by creating jobs.”

UA&P School of Economics Dean Dr. Peter Lee U, in his talk, said that to truly achieve sustainable growth, a multidisciplinary approach in problem-solving is needed. He added, “in the imagination, the enthusiasm, and the energy of the youth lies the key to sustainable development.”

Youth Congress, Year 2Shell Fuels Technical Adviser Andrew Kho emphasised the importance of making local technologies more efficient. Colin Hubo of the UA&P Center for Social Responsibility tackled the topic, “Forging Synergy among Stakeholders for Sustainable Development” while Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI) Programme Manager, Pam Castro, talked about “Contributing to Sustainable Development through Responsible Citizenship.”

During the open forum, students raised questions concerning policy implementation, engagement with stakeholders, and energy access for communities in far-flung areas. The exchange of ideas brought the panelists to a reiteration of principles regarding sustainable development and the energy future. “When you leave the campus, be pragmatic but you should not lose your idealism,” Chua told the youth delegates.

The afternoon session proceeded with the group discussions and proposal writing. The group that suggested a waste management orientation programme for communities in Manila emerged as the grand winner. Its members proposed a reward system to inspire citizens to develop a more socially responsible lifestyle.

Shell promotes a better life by offering deserving students scholarships and training. Through skills development and technical knowledge, the youth are enabled to contribute positively to nation-building.

Goals, when seriously pursued, benefit both the benefactor and the beneficiary. This was achieved by welder Idol and PSFI. For Idol T. Imperial, the PSFI scholarship was the light during the dark days in his life. For Shell, implementing skill-building programmes for the youth is one of its innovative methods to empower people and communities to become productive. With Shell’s help, Idol’s life changed and his dreams were fulfilled.

WELDING PIECES TO BUILDA BETTER LIFE

Moving from Puerto Princesa, Palawan to Batangas, young Idol has seen how his family struggled to make ends meet. Being the second eldest of six siblings, Idol took the responsibility of helping his parents provide for the family. With a strong desire to make good in life, Idol set forth to pursue his goal. He inquired about PSFI’s vocational programme, thinking that this was the only chance for him to acquire skills for better employment. He passed the exams and was admitted to the Structural Welding Course. Idol was among the seven who trained at the Keppel Batangas Shipyard (KBS) in 2012. After the training, Idol was hired as a pipe welder bythe company.

With gratitude, Idol said that being a PSFI scholar was one of the most pleasant events in his life. “I really thank PSFI for igniting the spirit within me to defend my dreams. I know people who need help, and I believe that the foundation can help. I will definitely recommend PSFI to anyone who wants to make his dreams come true.”

More Youth benefits from Shell scholarshipTwenty scholars from the National Capital Region (NCR) and Cavite comprised the pilot batch of Shell’s Unlad sa Pasada, a nationwide scholarship programme for the dependents of loyal and active members of the Shell Pepeng Pasada Club (PPC), which was implemented by PSFI. These young scholars recently completed training in courses such as welding, automotive mechanics, consumer electronics, food and beverage servicing, bookkeeping, basic computer, and mobile phone repair.

Jovellmar Olivarez, outstanding Unlad sa Pasada scholar was grateful for the training. “I thank Shell for giving us the opportunity to have a brighter future. I now believe that any dream, no matter how high, is possible to reach. If it were not for Unlad sa Pasada, my life would probably still have no direction,” Jovellmar said. He also described his long working hours and commuting almost four hours daily from

his residence in Imus, Cavite to Don Bosco Technical Institute while undergoing the training. This, according to him, did not hinder him from achieving his goal of completing the training. “Aside from the skills, I learned how to communicate with people and have confidence in myself,” he said proudly.

Sharing of technical expertise and training facilities with the academe

Bridging Employment through Skills Training Pangkabuhayang Dalubhasaan ng Bayan (BEST-PANDAYAN) programme of Malampaya Foundation Inc. (MFI) and the provincial government of Oriental Mindoro (PGOM) awarded 26 scholarships for Welding Trainingin 2012.

“The demand for welders in some countries like Canada is high, and the training at Keppel could serve as a passport for Filipino youth to achieve their dream,” MFI Executive Director, Karen Agabin, assured the new scholars.

Aside from offering scholarship, Shell partners with the academe to share its expertise and facilities.

In its effort to strengthen the skills of maritime students and lecturers, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed in December 2012 between Shell Marine Products Singapore (SMP) and the University of Cebu Maritime School. This paved the way to sharing of technical expertise and training facilities.

The University of Cebu Maritime School will use Shell Marine Products’ materials and products at marine product related lectures and at the Shell Marine Products Technical Seminar.

MOA partner, SMP General Manager Surinderdeep Singh, affirmed the significance of the tie up by saying, “We recognise

LIVING THE GAME OF LIFE:

CHESS

According to Asia‘s First Grandmaster Eugene Torre, sports can develop good citizenship. “By playing chess, we become good citizens of the country [because of the values that we get from playing sports].”

As part of SciP’s commitment to contribute to the overall development and growth of the Filipino youth, young wood pushers are invited to compete in the annual Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship.

In 2012, Shell Active Chess celebrated its 20th year. “We are proud to mark two decades of honing skills, discovering exceptional talents, and producing many champions. We celebrate 20 years of helping the Filipino youth realise their potential and promoting the values of discipline, diligence, responsibility, maturity and sportsmanship that the game of chess cultivates,” said Shell Social Investment Manager Jackie Ampil during the competition’s grand finals.

For two decades, Shell Active Chess had produced a number of very successful grandmasters, international masters, and national masters such as Wesley So, Nelson Mariano II, Oliver Barbosa, Julio Sadorra, Darwin Laylo, Ronald Dableo, and John Paul Gomez to name a few.

A two-day free chess clinic entitled “An Interaction with the Masters,” is also held every year led by the Philippines’ chess grand masters to coach and prepare young wood pushers for the Shell Active Chess tournament proper which is being held in key cities all over the country.
