Director of Competitions Report
In my brief time as your Director of Competitions I have come to understand a few
things about competitions within the Mississauga Camera Club. Although there is a significant amount of time and energy devoted to competitions just over 50% of the
members actively participate in Digital and approximately 10% in Print competitions
many of whom do both. I believe that many of the newer members are apprehensive about making submissions while some of our most experienced photographers do not
participate for various other reasons.
As you are aware this year has been difficult as we transitioned from in house judging sessions for digital to the on-line process. I believe that we have made a very good
start to this process but it needs to be reviewed to see where improvements need to occur.
VOLUNTEERS:
Most of the image data input, manipulation, and management responsibilities are being
handled; however, the following responsibilities need volunteers for next year: Review of non-technology tasks involved in the digital competitions, which
include:
Team Leader
Theme selection * ( * only need to done once a year)
Competition Handbook updates *
Preparing content for “Competition Info” on website
Budgeting *
Selection of judges *
Preparing slides and presenting information about digital competitions at meetings (generally in the Fall)
Coordinating the review of new member images for level placement (Omar was kind enough to review the actual images) *
Reviewing submitted images for errors or inadmissible content and contacting members about corrections (by far the most time-consuming job)
Communication with judges during the competition
Communications to members (competition update emails, competition information for Klik or Snapshot)
Presenting on results night

If we decide to continue with Print Competitions, a similar team is needed but adding
technology input manipulation as well as print organization.
These teams needs to be in place by May so that the planning and preparations for next
year are in place for September. Some volunteers could do more than one job. Ideally it would be good to have back-ups for the ongoing responsibilities.
OVERALL REVIEW OF MCC COMPETITIONS:
I believe that it would be beneficial for the club to do a thorough review of competitions
and the awards associated with these competitions which is a significant function at the annual Banquet.
For this purpose I am seeking volunteers to join me in doing an analysis of competitions.
My goal is to have a mix of experienced and new members, competitive and non-competitive participant members who are also members of other camera clubs, GTCCC
rep, members who are certified judges and past competition directors. Please send me
your name that you are interested in participating. [email protected]
I will speak to my planning for next year’s competitions at the April 2nd meeting. I ask
that you come to the meeting to learn more.
The first ever SIG of the Club …..
Was formed in 2005/2006 to understand the Nikon D200, the 10.2 megapixel DSLR
released in November 2005. Janet Martin tells us that the group included:
Peter Martin, Janet Martin, Joyce Brant, Sandra Roemer, Rob Kennedy, David Simmonds, Karen Simmonds, Juri Vosu, Fred Dixon, Janet Dixon, Raymond Hsu, David
Penty, Bruce Kennedy, Stephen Stefanoff and John Sutherland.
However, not all were interested in the travel idea when the ‘Locations’ Group started
in Nov 2009.

Our Intrepid Travel Photographer – David Simmonds
David is a senior member of our club and we asked him a few questions to explore his interest in Travel Photography and how it had changed over the years.
1. We are told that you are one of the founder members of the ‘Travel Group’ in the
Club. When did you start this and how did it evolve? How did it nurture your interest in Travel Photography?
The ‘Travel Group’ or ‘Locations Group’ was a spinoff of the Nikon D200 study group
which initially met at Janet Martin’s place to go over the finer functions of this Nikon camera. The ‘Locations Group’ started in
November of 2009. The idea was to have 1 or 2 members present images and information
pertaining to their trip. Importance was placed on the planning and travel arrangements,
accommodations, the pros and cons of the trip, and photographic opportunities. Points of
interest and timing of travel were discussed. These presentations provided me with
information on travel to various parts of the
world. I learned about the geography, the people, the history and the customs of the area
that was presented by the group member. Little emphasis was placed on the camera equipment
or the mode of presentation of these travel images.
2. How much does your interest in photography drive your choice of a travel destination and your daily plans once you are there? Do you like travelling with a group of
photographers? Name some of your most satisfying trips and some of your disappointments.
I retired in 2007 and by that time had already formulated a “bucket
list” of places that I wanted to visit in the world. On the top of this list
were visits above and below the
Arctic and Antarctic circles respectively. My interest in
photography did not necessarily drive my choice of travel
destination. I just wanted to go there; photography was the icing on
the cake. Since some of these destinations had a travel itinerary, I
didn’t have much say in the places

YUKON
PENGUIN FAMILY-
ANTARCTICA
Mar 2015 KLIK Page 5
that we photographed. However, on our self-drive trips, we had greater freedom on
where and what we photographed.
I enjoy traveling with groups of photographers. A large majority of these people are avid photographers and share both travel and photographic knowledge with me.
Some of my most satisfying trips have been to the Arctic, Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, the Canyon lands of the Southwest USA, European river cruise,
Patagonia, Chile, Alaska, Southern Ireland [many times], Haida Gwaii, [an adventure in itself], Newfoundland [again
many times ] and last but not least Lake O’Hara in the
Canadian Rockies [possibly my favourite ]. I have not had a
major disappointment in my travels since retirement. In part
this relates to the fact that on every trip I have been fortunate
to have Karen along for female guidance. I have gone on many
outings organized by the MCC
plus local outings with Fred and Robbie, a time when we solve the
problems of the world at Tim’s. I’m not sure much gets
accomplished in a photographic sense.
3. What nature of research do you undertake ahead of a trip to identify locations, timing
of festivals and events, conditions, etc.?
Besides attending meetings with the Locations Group, I use the following websites to acquire additional information before a trip. At Wikipedia I can research material about
my destination. This information can be printed so that future reference can be made to it. [You may not have an Internet connection at your destination]. Google maps,
Google images and Google street view can provide you with information on places to
photograph. If you don’t have on site Wi-Fi, you will have to make notes before your departure. Flickr can provide image information that can lead you to contact the
photographer that posted the image. However this requires that you actively pursue the information concerning your destination.
The website airbnb.com allows you to search for accommodations on line. This is
cheaper than booking hotels and often you can rent a fully equipped apartment. David duChemi’s latest eBook titled ‘SEE THE WORLD- 20 LESSONS FOR STRONGER TRAVEL
PHOTOGRAPHS’ covers many aspects of travel. If not on a group tour, give serious consideration to hiring a private guide and driver. In Santiago, Chile we gained access
AFTER THE HIKE-
LAKE O'HARA

to areas of the city, which were inaccessible without a driver and a guide. In the Yukon,
without the generosity of Robbie’s sister as a guide, we would have missed many historical as well as the photographic opportunities.
4. What equipment do you carry? Do the airline baggage rules inhibit you?
I presently carry the Nikon D7100 and D610 bodies. I have 3 lenses--80 to 400 mm, 16 to 35 mm and the 28 to 300 mm. This equipment is shared between Karen and
myself. I also have a 1.4 extender that can fit on the 80 to 400 mm lens. So far the baggage rules have not prevented us from traveling with this equipment. However with
advancing age we will most likely change to lighter equipment
5. How do you balance the enjoyment of the trip as a ‘tourist’ versus that of an avid ‘photographer’? Would you like to share some difficult choices you had to make?
Perhaps you had to miss an exotic dinner because you wanted to capture a sunset followed by some night photography!
The balance of enjoyment of the trip as a tourist versus avid photographer depends
upon the photographic interest of your travel companions and family. When traveling with people that are not interested in photography your opportunities are limited i.e.
trying to shoot before sunset or sunrise. Once on a river cruise we had to make the
decision to photograph on our own or take the tour. More often than not we choose the tour rather than an independent photo excursion on our own. This relates to the time
restraints of the tour itself.
However, on the Arctic and Antarctic tours our
sleep and meals were interrupted on a regular
basis by changing photographic
opportunities. On a circumnavigation trip
around Newfoundland a wakeup call came at
6:00 am notifying us
that whales were spotted off the port side
of the ship. We jumped out of bed, grabbed our
cameras and started photographing the
whales. When on tour with other photographers expect to photograph day or night.

6. Over the years, has your approach to travel photography changed in what you plan
to capture i.e. a must have local tourist attraction or event, a spectacular view, a unique image, people, street scenes etc.? Please provide us some images to illustrate.
Over the years my approach to travel photography has changed. No longer do I take a
SLR camera when engaged in sporting activities i.e. skiing. No longer do I hike the
upper trails at Lake O’Hara. Due to the aging process my approach to travel photography has undergone some changes but I still plan to capture similar images but
in a less risky part of that environment. The images shown below illustrate how my photography has changed over the years.
7. Where were was your last trip and what did you expect to photograph? Were you
successful? Where do you plan to go next?
My last trip was to Florida in January-February of this year. I expected to photograph birds and kite boarders. I accomplished both since they were readily accessible on foot
or by automobile. The images below represent attempts at this subject matter. My future trips will be to the familiar areas of Newfoundland and Lake O’Hara. The
environment will be the same but the pictures will be different. One has to remember that travel photography is mainly about the experiences and memories that remain with
you following the trips. The images captured during these trips enhance these
experiences and memories.

Our next Photo Essay Evening is on April 16, 2015
KLIK: November 1975
Ernie Barrie from Brantford was our guest for the evening. His topic was Photo Essays and we were given many ideas for our own essays. Some of the essays shown were individual effects while others combined the ideas and photos of a group. One essay took the song "Talk to the Animals" and illustrated it appropriately. Another was a humorous story put together from photographs of road signs. Mr. Barrie
showed us that parts of a holiday, bees in an outdoor hive and candid shots of photographers can all be worked successfully into photo essays. We are limited only by our imaginations. We thank Mr. Barrie for his entertaining and informative instruction.
