Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray was selected ninth overall by the Oakland Athletics, marking the seventh top-10 selection in Conference history and the 39th Big 12 player to be selected in the first round. The Big 12 was the nation’s second-strongest conference in the NCAA’s RPI Rating in 2018. Seven of nine Big 12 teams held a RPI in the top-57: Texas Tech 10, Texas 22, Baylor 32, Oklahoma State 41, Oklahoma 42, West Virginia 51 and TCU 57. The Big 12 ranked third among all conferences with five NCAA Championship participants, meaning that 55.5% of the league played in the postseason. This marks the 17th time in 22 years that at least five Big 12 teams participated in regionals. With a RBI single from Shea Langeliers, No. 5-seed Baylor captured its first Big 12 Baseball Championship postseason title with a 6-5 win over No. 6 TCU at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Langeliers, along with Baylor starting pitcher Cody Bradford were named the co-Most Outstanding Players of the Championship. There were a total of eight upsets in the 2018 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship, including a championship-record six consecutive upsets by lower seeds to open the tournament. After Texas won its first regular season title since 2011, Kody Clemens took home Big 12 Player of the Year and David Pierce garnered his first Big 12 Coach of the Year accolade. In total, six Longhorns earned All-Big 12 distinction. Clemens became the first Longhorn to pick up Player of the Year honors since Kyle Russell in 2007. Baylor’s Cody Bradford was tabbed Pitcher of the Year, while Oklahoma State’s Matt Kroon was named Newcomer of the Year. For the second year in a row, a Texas Tech player was named the Freshman of the Year. Josh Jung took home the honor in 2017, while Gabe Holt was named the Conference’s top rookie in 2018. C ONFERENCE N OTES C ONFERENCE N OTES Texas and Texas Tech baseball punched tickets to the 2018 Men’s College World Series with game three victories in the NCAA Super Regionals. At least one Big 12 program has participated in the CWS in five consecutive seasons. Texas registered a 5-2 victory over Tennessee Tech in Austin to secure its NCAA-leading 36th all-time appearance to the College World Series and the first since 2014. In Lubbock, the Red Raiders collected a 6-2 win over Duke to punch their third ticket to the CWS in the last five seasons. TTU made its first trek to Omaha in 2014, followed by another in 2016 and now its third appearance this season. The Big 12 was the only conference represented this season in the College Football Playoff (Oklahoma), Men’s Final Four (Kansas), Men’s College World Series (Texas and Texas Tech), and Women’s College World Series (Oklahoma). The Big 12 led all conferences with 22.2% of the league reaching Omaha. This marked the 15th year since 1999 that at least one Big 12 team has participated in the College World Series. It is the seventh time in league history that two or more teams have reached the CWS. The appearances are No. 24 and No. 25 for the Conference. In the NCAA Regionals, all five Big 12 programs made it to Sunday. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech all reached their respective regional finals. During the first two days of the Championship, the Big 12 won 80% (8-2) of its games. Kody Clemens became just the second Big 12 player to win the ABCA Player of the Year Award. Clemens shared the honor with California’s Andrew Vaughn. Texas Tech coach Tim Tadlock was tabbed D1Baseball Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 45-20 mark during the season. David Pierce earned Baseball America Coach of the Year honors after leading Texas to its first Big 12 Conference regular-season title since 2011. Big 12 Conference baseball saw game duration drop by an average of 13 minutes due to a visible pitch clock utilized during 2018 league games. The average length of play in 2017 was 3:17, while in 2018 the length had dropped by 13 minutes to 3:04. If eliminating the five longest and five shortest games in 2018, the length of games was three hours. Under NCAA experimental rules, the Big 12 utilized a visible pitch clock. Additionally, the Conference was permitted to reduce the time between pitches when no runners were on base from 20 to 15 seconds. The Conference also used the visible clock for pre-game and between- inning timing. Unless the NCAA baseball rules committee makes an adjustment in the pitch clock, the Big 12 will likely request to continue the experimental rule in 2019 to gather more data. Three Big 12 squads ended the season in five top-25 polls. Texas Tech was No. 5 and No. 6 in the polls, while Texas was No. 7 nationally. Oklahoma was No. 24 in the Collegiate Baseball News poll.
