NBYC Members,

On a recent January evening the New Bern Yacht Club convened to celebrate our annual Change of Watch. It was a delightful and elegant party, held at the New Bern Country Club, to welcome our returning and newly elected Officers and Directors. Our sincere appreciation goes out to Penny Litteken and her committee for providing us with such a special evening with a Message in a Bottle. Our Message in a Bottle is the NBYC mission statement: To provide diverse boating experiences through marine related on-the-water, educational, community and other social activities in a club of boaters with various types and sizes of craft.

In alignment with our Mission the NBYC Officers and Directors will lead the club by:

• Welcoming boaters of all ages to share in local and long-distance on-the-water activities.

• Supporting responsible seamanship through educational offerings. • Supporting our local area through participation in marine-related community

events. • Supporting camaraderie among members through a broad range of monthly

meetings and other social activities. • Promoting volunteerism among members to maintain the club and accomplish

the NBYC Mission.

As we embark on another exciting year of boating adventures, social events and club life recall our mission statement... a Message in a Bottle! We would like to welcome both Bob and BA Yeaton, and Jack and Marilyn Browning-Henry who were inducted at the Change of Watch as new Members. Welcome to NBYC folks! Our first General Meeting at the clubhouse this year will be held at 7:30pm on February 26. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

2019 Cruising

The Cruiser of the Year Dinner is fast arriving. February 22. You don’t want to miss this one. I have previewed the slide show and it

is a bundle of laughs. If you took part in a cruise during the year the chances are that you are in the show. If you are coming to the

dinner please bring an appetizer or dessert to augment the catered portion of the dinner. No need to notify anyone, just bring one or the other.

The Cruise Planning Meeting will be held March 7. Everyone is

welcome who has an interest in taking part in any of our cruises, either by boat or land yacht. The purpose of the meeting is to flesh out the events already on the schedule and to add any additional

cruises that members would be interested in.

The first on water events for 2019 are the Shakedown Cruise to Oriental April 26-28 followed by a Cruise to Southport/Bald Head Island April 28 to May 5. There is great interest being displayed in

both of these events.

Other events already on the schedule are the Blessing of the Fleet, Croaker Fest, Front Door Music Festival, The Annual New Bern Flotilla, Wooley Bear and by great demand the second annual Small

Boat Flotilla on November 16. Start working on those small boat entries. The first year’s boats were all really good so you have a target to aim at.

My New Year wish remains good cruising weather for the year.

Shipmates’ Information

Directory Updates

If you are aware of an update to the directory, please let Jim Smithwick know. Email is much better than meeting at Lowe’s or Harris Teeter, and even better than a phone call,

but any form of communication is better than ignoring it. Misplaced your directory? It is also available online at newbernyachclub.com in the Members Only tab.

Ship’s Store A Ship's Store brochure is available at the club to see the most popular items purchased over the past years from New Bern Sporting Goods. A sample of each item is at the club showing color options and prices to help you decide on your choices for purchase. There is now a variety of logos from which to choose as well as fonts for embroidering; samples of those are also available for you to see. The newest items to be offered are belts, flip flops, key fobs, and totes with the New Bern Yacht Club logo. Continued items for purchase from the store: our stainless-steel mug, glassware, Tervis glasses, burgees, and note cards. Please let me know if I can help you find a special item or gift.

Welcome New Members: The NBYC welcomed two new couples as members at the Change of Watch.

From left to right: Bob and BA Yeaton, Tim Broderick, Jack and Marilyn Browning-Henry.

Bob and BA Yeaton were previously very active members of the Harbour Village

Yacht Club in Hampstead, NC, including past commodore. They have done extensive cruising and off shore fishing from Maine to Florida. They cruised the Chesapeake and Florida for six months a year and have made 18 Maine to Florida

trips. They plan to do local cruising from their home on Brice’s Creek.

Jack and Marilyn Browning-Henry previously were active in the Lakewood Yacht Club and the Houston Yacht Club both in the Houston area. They currently own a Duffy 22-foot electric boat (named Dragonfly) which they use to give eco tours on

the Trent River and the New Bern waterfront. They have extensive boating experience with both power and sailing vessels. Their adventures include sailing

around the Cape Horn and navigating the Great Loop. We would like to welcome these two couples of our club.
