KeynoteSpeakersDrGiovanniFederigoDeSantiDirector, Directorate Competences, Joint Research Centre,EuropeanCommissionBehaviouralInsightsforasustainableenergytransitionAbstract:MeetingtheEU'sclimatechangeandenergypolicyobjectivesfor2030andbeyondrequires a major transformation of the current power system operation andarchitecture, which is already undergoing significant technological, regulatory andsocialmodifications.TheEnergyUnionStrategyhasputtheenergyconsumeratthecentreofitsconsiderations.In this context, smart technologies and services are essential to reap theopportunities available in an interoperable Smart Grid infrastructure, empoweringconsumers/prosumers in taking control of their energy consumption and self-production. Likewise, innovative solutions focusing on the demand-side of themarketshouldbepursued, inotherwordsconsumershaveanessentialroletoplay.Traditionally, policies aimed at affecting consumers' choice have focused on priceinterventionsandinformationprovision.Yet,evidenceshowsthatwedonotalwaysbehave 'rationally': people are myopic (they disproportionally weight immediatecosts,ratherthanconsideringpotentialcost-savings),theyprocrastinate,orstrugglein contexts where they are provided with too much information/choice (such aswhenfacedwithcomplexenergytariffs).Inthiskeynotewewillexplorehowbehaviouralinsights–bysheddinglightonhowpeople actually make choices – can contribute to sustainable energy transition.EarlierthisyeartheJointResearchCentre(JRC),theEuropeanCommissionin-housescience service, published the BIAP 2016 report, showing howbehavioural insightsareincreasinglyinfluencingpolicyatnationallevelinEurope, includinginthefieldofenergy (e.g. reducing the transaction costs of switching, using social norms toinfluence energy usage, improving feedback on energy consumption on bills ormeters). In the near future, the JRC plans to explore this potential focusing inparticularon insights frombehavioural researchonenergyefficiencytosupportEUpolicies.

JohnA.BoeckerAIA,LEED@Fellow,7groupIntegrativeThinkingandRegeneration:WhatAreWeTryingtoSustain?Abstract:

Integrative Thinking and Regeneration: Through the practice of developing ourthinking about how technical systems are nested within whole living systems, anyproject can be leveraged as a highly effective acupuncture point for helpingtransform community vitality and regenerating life. There are two interrelateddimensionsinthiswork:

• Atitsentrylevel,RegenerativeDesignisapracticeforreversingthesystemicdecline in living systems and creating the basis for self-renewing socio-ecologicalvitality.

• Regenerative Development is a continual process that builds the capacity, capability, and will of stakeholders to serve as co-designers and activeparticipants in the continual evolutionary transformation of their uniqueplace.

RegenerativeDevelopment andDesign engages amuch deeper integrative processthat works beyond just building; it comprises a meta-discipline that combines thepattern thinking and practices of Ecological Design, Permaculture, Biophilia,OrganizationalPsychology,Neuroscience, andIntegrativeDesign.Wewillexperiencethis work through a highly interactive engagement and discussion around howbuildinganddevelopmentcanbeseenasaninstrumentforhealing, sustaining, andregenerating the communityof life in eachuniqueplaceby re-membering thatweplayaparticipatoryroleinthevitalityofthelivingsystemsinwhichwearenested.

DrDirkPietruschkaInstituteforAppliedResearch(IAF)andzafh.net,Germany3D-City model based predictive decision making and control ofdecentralized urban energy systems and their intelligentinteractionwithsmartgridsAbstract:Model basedpredictive control tools found already a quit broad application in theintelligent control of buildings, where such tools are used to increase the energyefficientHVACsystemoperation. However, duetotheincreasedshareofsustainableenergy technologies the urban energy system focuses a significant change from acentralized generation and supply structure to a more and more decentralizedsystem.Asmostof the renewableenergysourcesarestrongly fluctuatingover thedayandyear, intelligentcontrolmechanismsareneededtostabilize theenergydistributionnetworks. Energy system modelling combined with weather forecast data canprovide the required information well in advance and delivers the requiredinformation for an intelligent load and storage management. 3D-City modelscombined with simulation tools, weather forecast data and an intelligent datamanagement significantly reduce the effort for the energy system modelling andprovideadditionallyusefulgeometricalinformationonshadingeffects. In future smart grids this information will be used to adapt the demand and thecontrollable local energy generation to the needs of the local and higher leveltransfergrids.Withinthepresentationexamplesonthestructureandapplicationofthesepowerfultoolsforthecontrolofurbanenergysystemswillbeshown.
