Letter from the Global Alumni Conference Committee

Welcome to where it all begins, welcome to Egypt!

For the first time in the Middle East; AIESEC’s annual International Congress (IC) has come to expand horizons and discover an entirely new type of experience. Egypt will act as the stage for AIESEC’s 65th consecutive IC; engaging the international citizens of AIESEC with multi-national corporates, interna-tional organizations, and government, catapulting international AIESEC product and exchange strategy, launching global partnership, and building connection between young people from 113 countries unlike that seen by any other student driven organization in the world. Representatives from every corner of the world will come to represent their culture on the podium that is IC in the international phenomenon arena that is AIESEC.

Egypt offers a completely unique opportunity. At this time, in a country experiencing a sensational political situation, we as AIESECers have the po-tential to expand the boundaries of democratically aware citizen in a nation ready for reform. Think; you are coming to the center of civilization, the eyes of the world are on Egypt and you will be part of a conference that aims to deliver the objectives of creating global minded citizens for a more compas-

sionate society, pushing our acceptance of diversity, innovation, and fighting the complacent acceptance of the status quo, by helping further the growth of an organization empowering students to become lead-ers and doing the right thing for the world. MENA as a region has immense international business po-tential in their post-Arab spring state, ready to be leveraged towards reaching higher global market development.

In this way, the 65th International Congress 2013 in Egypt will be unlike any other.

Held in parallel with IC 2013 will be Global Alum-ni Conference (GAC). From the 22-25 of August in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt at the Savoy Hotel (across the street from the venue housing the 1000 current IC delegates), alumni from around the world will convene to speak about business and organization development in the Middle East, share ideas about value based ventures, and reconnect to the AIESEC spirit. Global Alumni Conference will aim to con-nect alumni to and within the MENA region, con-nect alumni to AIESEC, and showcasing the majestic and powerful beauty that is Egypt. GAC will serve as a bridge between generations of AIESEC mem-bers who will come together to commemorate the

extraordinary experience which AIESEC offers and discuss what our organizational development will look like to continue influencing global citizens in everlasting attempts at creating a more compassion-ate society. This platform for sharing knowledge, resource and ideas for positive impact will leverage alumni, and especially those in the MENA region, to be more engaged and involved in the current AIESEC operations in order to encourage the growth of our AIESEC products and exchange functions. Here in Egypt, we have a cradle for Convergence, Change, Discovery, and Reflection. Get ready to meet new people, see new things, live an experience, and dis-cover a culture like never before.

Embark on The Next Journey as a lifelong AIESECer.

Hanne Ockert-AxelssonCongress Committee Vice President of Global Alumni Conference 2

1 WELCOME TO GAC

WELCOME TO EGYPT2

Egypt is perhaps best known as the cradle of civilization, home of the ancient Pharaonic civilization, with its temples, hieroglyphs, mummies, and - visible above all - its pyramids having one third of the world’s monuments in one place, Luxor that holds a distinct char-acter.

Also well-known for its medieval heritage, courtesy of Coptic Christianity and Islam - an-cient churches, monasteries and mosques punctuate the Egyptian landscape. A significant focus of archaeological study and popular interest, Egypt’s rich cultural legacy, as well as the attraction of its Red Sea, Riviera, has made it one of the most popular tourist attractions world wide.

3

WELCOME TO Sharm el-Sheikh Sharm El Sheikh is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The climate is lovely and dry all year long with temperatures ranging between 32° to 37° C. It is often called the “City of Peace”, because of the various peace conferences held in the city and attended by world leaders.

Besides of its magnificent natural Aquatic scenery, Sharm El Sheikh has its fair share of historic attractions like the amazing St Catherine Monastery, and beautiful desert or the majestic Sinai Mountains Inside Sharm El-Sheikh, Soho Square & Naama Bay are where the action is to be found, middle eastern areas with a european theme built in to them, they represent a fine example of the Modern touristic life inside of Egypt..

CAIRO

The culture and dress code are not as strict in Egypt as they are in some other Islamic countries, but it’s still best to be modest, especially for ladies.

Ladies, please dress modestly in Cairo. If you plan to visit religious sites, rural areas, mosques, churches and monasteries: cover you hair and neck with a scarf and take your shoes of before entering, if required. As a further advice avoid wearing figure hugging clothes. Keep your shoulders and knees covered at all times. The longer the sleeves the better, but a normal t-shirt sleeve is fine.

Feel free to wear what you like in Sharm El-Sheikh. Locals are used to tourists and have no problem with different types of clothing. In general comfortable and casual clothes are the best: loose, lightweight clothes.

Don’t forget your sunglasses. Bring a light sweater or jacket for cool mornings and evenings. By visiting the various sites it is advisable to wear sensible and comfortable footwear. High heels and open toe shoes are not handy. The floors of most sites are either sandy or rough-cut, uneven stones.
