Thanksgiving is a time of sober reflection and joyful affection. In that vein I share the following two items which I hope will evoke from you a “Hmmm: and a “Haaa.”

Roman Catholic mystic, Carlo Carretto, offers the following reflection on our marriage in faith to God:

It is difficult to make a marriage between two persons who are in such different circumstances. He brings you his all, while you can only bring him your nothing. How can one set about reconciling such differences?

How can he be certain that you are not seeking him out of self-interest?

That you are not going to him only because you have found no one else?

That you are not going to him for the pleasure you get out of it?

That would be too easy and too shallow a love. When the Bible says that God is a jealous God, it is speaking truly. But God’s jealously is not like ours. He is jealous because he is afraid that, instead of loving him in his naked being, we love only his creation, his riches, his gifts, the joy he bestows, the peace he brings. (The God Who Comes)

Why do we seek God? Is it only because of what he can give us? Or is it because of who God is and who we are with God or without God? Hmmm.

Now from the sublime to the ridiculous. The Cincinnati Enquirer asked first-third graders how to cook a turkey. Here are some of the responses with appropriate headings. Stuffing - “My Mom and Dad don’t make it. My sister and I cook the turkey. In the dressing room we put apples, oranges, bananas, plums, pears, grapes.” Slow Cook - “Go to the store. Come home, open the package, put it in the oven. Cook 30 days. Take it out. Give it to your cat.” Instant Bird - “Put the turkey in the oven. Bake. It will probable take six minutes or five minutes and 50 degrees for it to bake.” The Logical Approach - “Get up early on the morning. Clean your turkey good. Butter it well. Wrap it in Reynold’s Wrap. Baste about every hour. I would cook it for 100 degrees. Put salt and pepper on it. Yum, yum, yum. Grandma does it the same way.” Compassionate Approach - “First go get the little thing and then put the little guy on the table. And then put him in the oven and wait for the little guy.” Haaa.

I hope your Thanksgiving has its hmmms and its haaas.

Gratefully, Dan

ATTENTIONS 20’S & 30’S

2016 ADVENT DEVOTIONALS

Advent Begins November 27! How about Waiting for God?

If that feels rushed, accept this invitation to slow down. In this busiest of seasons, Second invites you to make space in each day for quiet reflection guided by the daily reader Waiting for God. In it, author Henri Nouwen "will help you celebrate the days of waiting and hoping for a deeper experience of

God’s presence this Advent. Use his daily insights—

together with a Scripture quote related to his theme and a prayer starter to let you go where your heart takes you—to meet Jesus first in your heart through prayer and then in the events of your daily life.”

You will find free copies of this Advent devotional distributed throughout the church beginning on November 13. An online copy will also be available on our website. Let’s join together in Waiting for God.

Consider giving Christmas gifts that help others! Second offers various opportunities for such giving in the Gathering Place on Sundays November 20 and December 4. You can buy fair trade gifts from around the world that Mary Robbins and Valerie Caudill have

chosen from the SERRV catalogue.

Contact Mary Robbins ([email protected]) if you would be able to help unpack or sell. Equal Exchange coffee, cocoa and candy bars will be back for the holidays, too.

SERRV (ALTERNATIVE GIFTS) FAIR

We want you to know about all the great resources out there, to make it easier to care for the people you love. Four times a year, an expert in an area of aging and caregiving will share real life information and answer your questions. Also meet and learn from other guests who are experiencing the same issues you face. Join us for our next Sunday Session:

• When: Sunday, November 6

• Where: Second Church (Forum Room)

• Time: 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

• Guest Speaker: Scott Wegenast, AARP

Assoc. State Director for Advocacy & Research

Our guest speaker will discuss the upcoming 2017 Kentucky Legislative Session, citizen engagement and will present our federal candidates’ responses on the issue of Social Security.

People of all ages and life stages: living out their golden years; taking care or someone they love; coping with disabilities or difficult health situations or simply smart enough to know it’s never too early to start planning for the future are invited to join us.

I KNOW SUNDAY SESSION AT SECOND

Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue, so that you may live and occupy the land that the Lord your God is giving you. Deuteronomy 16:20

Nearly 400 concerned people of faith and justice attended BUILD's Community Problem Assembly (CPA) on October 17th at Shiloh Baptist. With the recent gun violence deaths, increase in open drug markets, shootings and homicides impacting ALL areas of our city and ALL citizens, we began with a somber moment of silence and prayer. More empowered to stop the violence and reclaim our neighborhoods, BUILD will move forward with engaging additional allies: Mayor Gray, council members and more local business leaders to convince our police chief, at his 3rd Nehemiah Action 'ask' in April, to consult with the experts at the National Network for Safe Communities at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. Visit NNSC (www.nnscommunities.org). The chief, nor any of his staff, were present at the CPA.

Other ongoing issues: BUILD made a strategic decision to 'pause' the predatory payday lending campaign until after the Nov. elections. The steering committee will meet shortly thereafter to determine their next steps moving forward. Shannon Sell, Bluegrass Hub Adm, was pleased to share many positive outcomes with the mental health initiative. Abiding with her Action commitments: ACT (Assertive Community Treatment) Team is currently serving 65 clients (100 by March), all staff have completed a duel mental health/substance abuse training and valuable results have been culled from the 673 mental health community surveys.

Second will host BUILD's Research Kick-off on Monday, November 28 at 6:30 p.m. All JM network members interested in learning more and/or participating in any aspect of this vital process are encouraged to attend. Since the violence/crime/drug issue was the most urgent problem voiced at BUILD's recent House Meetings, no 'new' problem was added for research this year. The crime steering committee has an urgent need for more members to help engage other stakeholders to make our community safer. The mental health committee needs more help to identify additional solutions to the 2 primary community deficits listed in the surveys. PLEASE remember that you schedule whatever amount of time you are available over the next 4 months of this important work: 2 hours or 20 hours per week? or per month?

Being a Justice Ministry Network Member provides a real opportunity to actually Do Justice! At Secon’s CPA caucus we celebrated commitments from 5 'new' members: Teresa and Tom Polities, Nancy Stallard, Harvie Wilkinson and Shawn Caudill. Thank You for helping 2nd church fulfill God's mandate to Do Justice!

On behalf of all our neighbors for whom we WALKED.....GAVE (Second surpassed our $4500 goal!) and CHANGED their WORLD, extreme gratitude to each 2nd church member and their family and friends for caring and sharing! Once again, a heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to the many 2nd volunteers that eagerly responded 'Yes' to my ask to assist with the many 'pre, day-of, and post' Walk activities. Your participation was essential in creating another successful Greater Lex. CROP Hunger Walk. As we Give Thanks this Thanksgiving, do consider sharing your bountiful blessings to support the anti-hunger programs of CWS (Church World Service) and God's Pantry Food Bank (crophungerwalk.org/lexingtonky).
