Returning Catholics  Begins January 20 

We would like to welcome home those who have been away from the Church.  The next 7‐week  Returning Catholics series will begin on Wednesday evening Jan 20, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the church Social Room.  The series includes a discussion of the  concerns of those returning and an updating in the beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith. It is very helpful for those returning to have a spiritual  companion for the duration of the series.  If you would like to be a companion or are considering returning, contact Carol Becker, cabecker@san.rr.com (858) 354‐7085) or just come to the first meeting.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so God rejoices in the chosen Zion and Jerusalem  (Isaiah 62:1‐5). 

Psalm — Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the na‐tions (Psalm 96). Second Reading — All the varied gifts and talents found in the Christian community are products of the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4‐11). Gospel — At a wedding festival in Cana, Jesus changes water into wine at his mother’s request (John 2:1‐11).

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION We have often maintained that there is a stewardship mes‐sage in every reading from Holy Scripture. Today’s readings are no exception, from the reminder that “God rejoices in each of us” to “To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit” from St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians to the Gospel story about the miracle at the wedding in Cana as reported in John.  

Although each of those messages is worthy of our thought, meditation, and reflection, we would like to focus on a particu‐lar line in St. John’s Gos‐pel, a statement which literally says it all about stewardship as a way of life. Our Blessed Mother Mary says quite simply, “Do whatever He tells you.” Her message for those gathered at the wedding and her message for us is the same.  

The whole purpose of our lives is to seek and ascertain what it is that the Lord is telling us. We all understand that is not easy, and for many of us becomes a lifelong quest. Yet, that is exactly what Mary says to us, and it is exactly what we need to do. Through prayer and discernment each of us must try to discover what the Lord is “telling” us. That  requires prayer on our part; it means we have to listen more than speak; and it means we need to identify, recognize, and use our gifts.

 REFLECIÓN DOMINICAL 

A menudo hemos mantenido que hay un mensaje de mayordomía en cada lectura de la Sagrada Escritura. Las lecturas de hoy no son una excepción, con el recordatorio de que "Dios se regocija en cada uno de nosotros" a "A cada persona se le da la manifestación del Espíritu para el bien común" de la primera carta de St. Paul a los Corintios a la historia del Evangelio acerca del milagro en las bodas de Caná como se informa en Juan.  

Aunque cada uno de esos mensajes es digno de nuestro pensamiento, la meditación y la reflexión, nos gustaría centrarse en una línea en particular en el Evangelio de San Juan, una declaración que literalmente dice todo acerca de la corresponsabilidad como una forma de vida. Nuestra Santísima Madre María dice simplemente, "Haced lo que Él os diga". Su mensaje para los reunidos en la boda y su mensaje para nosotros es la misma.  

Todo el propósito de nuestra vida es buscar y determinar qué es lo que el Señor nos está diciendo. Todos somos conscientes de que no es fácil, y para muchos de nosotros se convierte en una búsqueda de toda la vida. Sin embargo, eso es exactamente lo que María nos dice, y es exactamente lo que tenemos que hacer. A través de la oración y el discernimiento cada uno de nosotros debe tratar de descubrir lo que el Señor está "diciendo" nosotros. Eso requiere la oración de nuestra parte; que significa que tenemos que escuchar más que hablar;y significa que necesitamos para identificar, reconocer y usar nuestros dones.

SURPRISES Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God’s surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory.  

Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came be‐cause somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus.  

We may think that the point of today’s familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody’s life—not necessarily our own—will be surprised for the better.

Culture War Questions –  Christian Answers

Pope Francis has called for the Christian Church to be a “field hospital” for those wounded and often neglected by the modern world. In his letter, The Joy of the  Gospel, the pope calls for the Church to be truly open and missionary at every level. What does this mean for the moral teaching of the Church? Is it changing? And how can members of the Church share the love and mercy of Christ as the pope asks even in an atmosphere of deep moral confusion that requires clear talk about hard moral issues? How can we, now, talk in a truly Christian way about all the culture war issues, from abortion and euthanasia to the sexual revolution,  gender issues, and even proposed changes to the very biology that makes us human? 

SJA Open House All are welcome to attend the St. James Academy Open House next Sunday, January 24th from 8:30‐11:30.  Teachers will be in their classrooms, from pre‐school through eighth grade, and there will be tours given by the student council, principal and staff.  

If you cannot make it on January 24th, please attend one of our See Us in Actions days scheduled for this Thursday, January 21st, and also on Wednesday,  February 24th, between the hours of 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.  Kindergarten screening is Thursday, February 4th.  Please contact the school office to schedule a screening time.

2016 WeALLCount 

During the 2015 Point‐in‐Time Count, 8,742 individuals were counted as being homeless in San Diego County, thanks to volunteers like you! This year in the early morning hours of January 29, 2016, roughly 1,500 volunteers will participate in the 2016  WeALLCount, the annual homeless census of San Diego County. Led by the Regional Task Force on the  Homeless, the WeALLCount enables our entire region to better understand the scope, impact, and potential solutions to homelessness by giving us valuable  information on the homeless population.  WeALLCount empowers our community to qualify for millions in funding that is critical to addressing  homeless issues.  

The Regional Task Force on the Homeless is seeking  volunteers for both of the following: Count‐  Volunteers to count unsheltered homeless persons—January 29 (4am‐7am). Volunteers will count in teams of 2 or 3 OR Interview‐ Volunteers to conduct inter‐views with homeless individuals—January 29‐ February 5.  Volunteers will interview in teams of 2 or 3. Register for a shift and please share with any friends, family, and coworkers who you think would be  interested!  REGISTER TODAY AT http://rtfh.volunteerhub.com!

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary.  We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643.  The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world.  Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the
