FILE AND FOLDER MANAGEMENT
File and folder management involves renaming, relocating, arranging and organizing files and folders on the computer.
Ways of organizing files and folders.File names should be short and precise as possible. Frequently used files should not be hidden within many folders Do not put all your files in one folder especially on the desktop
Organize your files by putting them in folders that describe their types or date modified. Reduce the number of sub-folders as much as possible.
A. FILE A file is a piece of information such as data, program or document we create and store in a computer. Types of files Document files Program files Music files Video files Picture files

File icons display a short information when you rest the mouse pointer on it. This pop out information is called Screentip. The screentipdisplays Type of the file Arthur of the file Date of modification Size of the file Names are given to the files we create to enable us determine their description, content and function. They are called filenamesA filename is a unique name that identifies a computer file stored in a file system.
Filename has two parts namely; Filename - Base name of the file Extension - indicates the content type of
the file. (e.g. .txt, .exe, .com) Pictures.cdr Inst.com Word.exe Budget.xlsA file extension is separated from the filenames with a full stop(period). Common file extensions are .COM .EXE .BAT .TXT .XLS.DOC .RTF .MID .Mp3 .PPT
STEPS TO RENAME A FILE 1, Right click on the file 2. Select Rename.3. Type the new name for the file. 4. Press Enter on the keyboard.
OR1. Select the file 2. Press F2 on the keyboard 3. Type the new name for the file. 4. Press Enter on the keyboard.
B. FOLDER A folder is an electronic container that organizes files, programs, computer drives and other folders on a disk.Folders are locations where group of related files such as documents, music, pictures, videos and programs are stored on a disk. By default, folders appear with colour yellow.Below is an example of a folder icon.
Types of folders. There are two main types of folders in a computer system. They are;1. System Folders 2. Program Folders System folders are already made folders created to store documents of files.
Program folders are the ones the user creates for specific files.
PROCEDURE TO CREATE A NEW FOLDER ON THE DESKTOP. The user must observe the following steps when creating a folder using the desktop option:
1. Right click on an empty space on the desktop.2. Select New from the context menu.3. Click on Folder from the drop-down menu4. Type the name you want to give the new folder
and press enter key on the keyboard.

Creating a folder using My computer icon1. Double click my computer icon on
the desktop to open it.2. Right click the left `pane and select
new from the options.3. Type a name for the new folder and
press Enter key to accept it.
TO RENAME A FOLDERTo rename or change the existing name of a folder, do the following.Option 1•Click the target folder.•Press F2 key on the keyboard.•Type the new name for the folder and then press enter to accept it.Option 2•Right click the folder.•Select rename from the drop-down menu list.•Type the new name and press enter.
DIFFERENCE BETYEEN FILES AND FOLDERS 1. Files store data or information while folders
store files and other folders.2. Files may occupy space on the hard disk whiles
folders take up virtually no space. 3. Files have their unique icons different from the
folders icons. 4. Folders are storage location for files. 5. While folders can be created within folders
files cannot be created within files.
DIFFERENCE BETYEEN FILES AND FOLDERS 1. Files are created by application
software while folders created with windows operating system.
2. Files names have an extension while folder names do not have extension.
