The bunny ears, chicks, carrots, eggs, glitter and
glam were all present for the Easter Hat parade and
for the first time in the history of St. Andrew's
Grammar, some of our secondary students made a
surprise appearance and joined in on the fun! We
are one school with
one vision and so we
decided (at the very
last minute) that each
form group contribute
one Easter hat
creation. Each Form
had one lesson to
create a unique Easter
hat masterpiece and
appoint a model to
showcase their design.
Lamia Ekic represented Form 7.1 and wore an
Aussie Easter Hat... a delightful collection of iconic
Australian animals and foods, along with the
traditional Easter bunnies. Lazar Jovanovic, in
Form 7.2, wore a unique creation which centres
around being an 'individual' and having confidence
to be yourself and express who you are.
Tapiwa Chitsa, from Apollo 1, wore a stylish yellow
hat with gold ribbon inspired by the spirit of Apollo
and their strong work ethic. Rafaat
Ahmed modelled a fusion of Ancient Greece and
contemporary Easter celebration. Nicole Nastos
wore a bright pink playful hat that was all about
enjoying the simple things in life and not taking life
too seriously!
Irini Nestoriadis modelled a glittery blue, sequined
hat with green straws for some extra pizzazz! Caleb
Singh blew the audience away with a triple Decker
Extravaganza hat and a sparkly mullet. Representing
Poseidon Form 8, Kane Young, rocked a bright bold
orange hat. All the creations were amazing,
however, it was clear that the showstopper was
Vanessa and David's double trouble creation.
Vanessa and David are from two different houses
but decided to collaborate and create a Mad Hatter
Extravaganza. They won the competition and so
Artemis and Apollo will share the 6 House points.
A massive THANK YOU to Jodie Jongeling for the
outstanding job she did as the emcee. She was
so entertaining, energetic and animated and warmly
welcomed Secondary and made as all feel warm and
fuzzy.
Thank you to everyone involved in organising the
Easter Parade and Raffle and all the children,
parents and staff for making the morning a most
spectacular event. ….

NAPLAN ONLINE
This is the third year that St. Andrew’s Grammar has participated in the NAPLAN Online WA Trial. Our
School has successful met all the technology requirements and extensive staff training requirement over
the past two years, and I am sure this will be replicated again this year.
Although there has been significant media discussion regarding the validity of delivering NAPLAN to
students electronically, all schools in Western Australia will be moving to this platform in the not too
distant future. By participating in the trial, we have established that our computing infrastructure is more
than sufficient to cope with the demands, and we have been provided with invaluable insight as to the skills
and strategies are students need to be able to demonstrate their true potential.
Years 7 and 9 will be participating in NAPLAN Online next term between the 14th and 23rd May, 2019.
Our students have always performed extremely well in NAPLAN and this year will not be an exception.
Teachers are also busily preparing their students for this important exercise.

SECONDARY HOUSE
SPELLING COMPETITION
The Year 12 Retreat was wonderful. We spent two
days in Fremantle exploring stress management tech-
niques, team building and changing to a positive
mindset. I look forward to sharing with you more of
our exploits in the newsletter next term, including
just how fast Mr Donaldson managed to run during
the Fremantle Prison Night Tour.
I wish all our students, their families and our staff a
very safe and restful Easter break and Term 2
holiday.
Please take care,

Last year The WA Government closed 6 of the most
affordable camp school sites in the state. As a result
of this, it meant the current camp levy fee in place at
St. Andrew’s would only go so far. In order to
maximise the learning benefits for our students we
decided to provide them with a jam packed three day
Adventure Learning Program rather than spend all
the money on transport, accommodation and
catering. Adventure Works facilitated a fantastic
program that encouraged students to participate in a
wide variety of activities that promoted,
self-awareness, self-management, responsible deci-
sion making, social awareness and relationship
building skills.
Over the 3 days students were encouraged to take
healthy risks by challenging themselves to push
further than what they thought possible. The Year
8’s were provided with regular opportunities for a
full body and mind check-in, helping them build
emotional awareness and self-reflection skills.
Students were taught how to identify their strengths
and then link those strengths with how they can
serve the wider community.
The program created a safe environment for
students to explore what success and failure looks
like. This opportunity enabled disconnection from
routine and technology to increase and deepen
connection with their cohort. Students were
encouraged to explore different avenues for creative
expression, building their capacity to problem-solve
and think outside the box.
This program was a huge success and I thoroughly
enjoyed watching the Year 8 develop crucial life
skills over the three days we were in the beautiful
surrounds of Bayswater Riverside Gardens. A big
thank you to the staff who attended and supported
our camp.

Once again Year 10 Camp was a success with
students gaining a lot form the island experience!
This year our Secondary Food Technology Teacher
Samantha Hunt came as our caterer, it was a huge
undertaking packaging and transporting all the food
to the island to cook for a large group of people, but
everyone would agree the food was absolutely
delicious! Huge thank you to our fabulous staff,
Sam, Paul Donaldson and Jacob Whiteaker who
attended camp, as well as Mr Monaghan who took
some time out of his busy schedule and came over
for the day.

Here is what Georgia Nicolau had to say about her
experience;
The year 10 class left for our four day long camp to
Rottnest Island on April Fool’s Day, but this camp
was no joke. Fresh off the boat we began our 22km
bike ride around the island, with time for a great
snorkel in between. That night we were all in need
of a feast and Miss Hunt served exactly that in the
form of a big barbeque.
The next day we went on an 11km hike along the
beach and through the hills of the marvellous
island. We did an incredible snorkel at Salmon Bay
and saw some astounding sea life, like crayfish and
a school of squid. That night we went stargazing
and learnt about astrology, space and how
Indigenous people found shapes in the shadows
between the stars.
On our third day we walked another long trail
around the lakes of Rottnest and saw an abundance
of unique wildlife. We hiked up to Oliver Hill where
we saw the massive gun situated on top of the hill
and learnt the fascinating history of how Rottnest
Island was a military defence base in World War II.
For our last night we had Mexican and all stuffed
our burritos a little too much. Later that evening we
went to the local cinema - in a shed - and watched
the touching Australian film Stormboy which
brought tears to all of our eyes.
On our last day we did the Adventure Challenge
Cycle, in which we paired up and had to race
around the settlement to solve clues, complete
questions and compete in activities to earn points.
It was a lot of fun and each person became a lot
closer with their partner. After that we played a
ruthless game of mini golf, followed by a beach
clean up to give back to the wonderful island that
has given us an unforgettable experience.
Just before we left we did a reflection and each
shared: something we’re leaving behind in Rottnest,
something that was difficult, something that took
our breathe away or something that will stick with
us. One thing that the whole year 10 class can agree
on is that we formed stronger relationships with
each other and our teachers.
The 2019 Rottnest camp was monumental in many
ways and will be a memory engraved in each
