l Dear Parents and Carers,
Term 1 is fast coming to a close and we have two very busy weeks ahead full
of learning and exciting events. This week teachers are involved in Stage
planning days which facilitates the development of teaching program
content, assessments and the refinement of reports in preparation for Term 2.
Although we do not schedule teacher/parent meetings this term, remember
that Figtree Heights Public School has an open door policy regarding
communication and teachers are receptive to interview requests at any
time.
NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge Learning 2 Lead Day
Last Friday, twenty of our Stage 3 students accompanied Miss Pearce to a
PSC L2L Day at Figtree High School. The PSC Sport Leadership program
supports schools in developing leadership opportunities for students through
sport and physical activity. The focus of the day for Stage 3 students is the
development of skills to enable them to then lead playground physical
activity and games with younger students on their return to school. This fits
perfectly with our current review of the use of our playground and our goal
to promote a wider range of sporting activities throughout the week. Thank
you Miss Pearce for organising what sounded like a valuable but very hot
day.
Parking Concerns
A reminder that the No Parking, or commonly referred to as a Drop Off or Kiss
and Go, zone near our St George Street entrance is definitely NOT a parking
zone. This facility allows for many of our children to be safely dropped at
school. The time limit on cars to be there is 2 minutes so parents have time to
assist their children get safely out of the car. Drivers must stay within 3 meters
of your car which does not allow you to walk your child into the school
grounds. Last week we had parents who parked and were absent for over 10
minutes as they attended to other business. Please be aware that cars
parked within 3 metres of double lines are also breaking the law as it forces
cars to cross over the double lines to pass. We also had parents witness
another parent verbally abusing a driver who was trying to pass their car – if
you are merging into the traffic flow from being parked, you do not have
right of way. Courtesy and patience will help this congested area work well.
The safety of our students is paramount. Consequently, we have requested
police do a drive by in the coming weeks to monitor this area. Currently fines
for overstaying in a ‘drop and kiss’ zone or for leaving your car exceeds $180
and two demerit points. Parking in a no stopping zone or a bus stop exceeds
$327 and two merit points.
HEALTHY FOOD – Big Vegie Crunch Day
This week is healthy eating week and this Thursday is ‘Big Vegie Crunch Day’.
Let’s see everyone increasing their intake of vegetables, especially on
Thursday! I love crunchy celery, and carrot sticks for my snacks. If you’re on
the lookout for healthy lunch box ideas the following website may be helpful.

l Academically Gifted Class [AGC]
Each year, students in Year 5 can apply to be considered for the
Academically Gifted Class which runs one day per week for twenty weeks
across four networks from Lake Illawarra to Helensburg. Interested Year 5
students sit standardised assessments contending for selection onto the
program. Four of our students were successful in gaining a position in the
class of twenty-six – an exceptional result. Congratulations to Eva Bonacina,
Eva Davey, Andre Dzeparoski and Joshua Hailstone who have all been
offered a place.
CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL – This Friday - April 5th
The annual school cross country carnival is approaching and already there
are quite a few students who are busy preparing for their race. As in
previous years, our students who are 8 years and older will be competing at
Figtree High School. The high school has expansive space for the official
cross country distances and provides a safe track for our students. Students
who are 5, 6 and 7 years old compete at our school. The back oval is more
than adequate for the shorter distances required for these age groups and
the later start time allows for our older students to be back at school in time
to cheer the younger runners on.
All students are expected to participate in the cross country carnival,
running or walking, it does not matter. Participation and having a go is the
aim of this event.
We are again relying on our wonderful parents and carers to assist with
transport to Figtree High (students will walk back to school following the
carnival).
Once again, we appreciate your ongoing assistance in events such as this.
If you are unsure of anything, please contact the office. We look forward to
parents and loved ones joining us for this fantastic event, specially the
under 8-year-old races that will be held at school from 12:30pm.
Please ensure that your child has returned the permission note if they are 8
years or older.
P&C K-2 CAMP OUT – This Friday – April 5th
All the planning is in hand for this event. Please keep your fingers crossed
that the weather is kind. If the event has to be cancelled, alternate
activities such as games and the disco will be held but the camping
component will not occur. Please ensure that you have returned your note.
Announcements will be made through ‘Seesaw’ and our school Facebook
app.

l Easter Eggs and Easter Hat Parade – April 12th
Our school Easter Hat Parade is on Friday, Week 11 – the last day of
school at 11:00am. Students can come to school dressed in mufti and are
asked to bring in their own Easter hat creation. Every child who
participates will get a raffle ticket for their class Easter Egg basket.
We are also accepting Easter Egg donations for our Easter Egg Basket
raffle. If you have a spare egg, bunny or packet of Easter goodies, please
send them into school. Your assistance is once again, greatly
appreciated.
At 1:00 we will have a Year 6 Fundraising sausage sizzle. Order forms are
being sent home this week. Parents are invited to have a picnic lunch
with their children.
At 1:45–3:00pm we will hold the Colour Run which is a P&C Fund raising
event.
COLOUR RUN
I am amazed at how much has been raised in sponsorship so far – thank
you for your generosity. The monies raised will be put to good use
providing resources for your children. If you’re up at school over the next
two weeks, have a look at my nails – I decide to encourage the students
through a few bright colours! Remember that the students will get the
best effect of the colours by wearing a white t-shirt (and old shorts or
similar – not school sports shorts).
Hope you have a wonderful week,
Kind regards,
Dee

Figgy Heights Fathering Tips
One on one is important
Find a way to drop off or pick up your
child from school, even if it's only once a
week.
Go together for an afternoon tea or a
snack.
Use that time to ask how your child is getting along with
friends on the playground or if anything is troubling them
about school.
