INTRODUCTION

Emergence of India as a Manufacturing Hub and Improving Multimodal Transportation

Infrastructure Moves the Indian Logistics Market to Top Gear. India's rising prominence in

the manufacturing sector over the last few years has given a fresh lease of life to the logisticsmarket, and this trend is likely to gain pace with the wave of global economic slowdown

gradually receding and India emerging as one of the earliest major economies to recover fromdownturn. This fast-paced growth of the industrial sector, coupled with the more sturdy

progress of the agricultural sector, has necessitated extensive supply chains across thecountry to facilitate sourcing and distribution of production. Distribution networks of most

industries in India involve numerous retailers across the country, and multiple levels ofintermediaries. Since companies will be hard pressed to serve such an intricate network,

logistics service providers (LSPs) will fancy their chances of finding a firm foothold in the

Indian market. Apart from the steady expansion of operations by large domestic industrialgroups, an increasing number of global majors in industries ranging from automotive and

electronics to pharmaceuticals and cement have been targeting a spot in the highly lucrative

Indian market, says the analyst of this research. While foreign companies need to engage

logistics service providers since they are not conversant with the culture, government

policies, or distribution landscape of the country, domestic companies are outsourcing their

logistic activities to organized third-party logistics (3PLs) to focus on their core

competencies.

Most manufacturing industries such as automotive, cement, minerals, oil & gas, pharma, food

processing, and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) need multimodal transportation

services as they have a widespread consumer base but limited production bases. Industries

such as FMCG, pharma, and food processing also have considerable requirements for

integrated logistics parks. Multimodal transportation solutions are becoming possible with thedevelopment of inter-connected transportation infrastructure facilities, especially dedicated

freight corridors by the railways and improvements in coastal shipping facilities. Similarly,the construction of massive state-of-the-art logistics parks at key distribution hubs are helping

to meet the specialized warehousing needs of industries. These developments are encouragingcompanies to outsource logistics functions.

History

V-Trans India Ltd. formerly known as Vijay Transport Co was founded by late Shri Kunverji

K. Shah, late Shri Vishanji K. Shah and brothers in 1958.It was a family owned business the

entire management that is the founder and board of directors belong to the Kutchi Visha-Oswal community from Gujarat. Vijay Transport started as a regional player with only two

trucks operating between Maharashtra and Gujarat. In 1985-86 initiated computerizedoperations in Bombay and Ahmedabad. In 1996, the Company expanded into Southern India,

later into Northern, Central and then Eastern India. In 2001-02, after a major corporatemakeover Vijay Transport Company became V-Trans India Ltd. with two additional

divisions, V-Xpress, an Express Division, and V-Logis, a Logistics Division; under theumbrella of Group V. V-Trans takes care of the customers Hard Freight transportation

needs, V-Xpress manages Express Cargo (Surface & Air) and V-Logis provides Customized

Warehousing and Inventory Management Solutions, thus becoming the customers single

window solution provider. In 2004 V-Trans offers the facility of Marine Insurance Policy to

customers. In 2008 launched eCargo our state-of-the-art ERP package which provides real

time information to customers. At present V-Trans is a national level logistics service

provider having more than 325 branches across 20 states. It is the only transporter having

offices in all states of Gujarat. Specialized in dealing with SMEs sector and are experts in

movement of chemicals and lubricants.

Rail Transportation

V-Xpress has expanded its horizon to Rail Operations. V-Xpress has started RailOperations to East and North East sector from the month of June 2010. It is

successfully running with 91% service level.

The Bookings from Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India shall move from PuneRailway Station and bookings from entire Delhi, Uttaranchal, Punjab and Rajasthan

shall move from Delhi Railway Station. Since the movement will be through trainthe expected time of delivery i.e. the transit time shall be less no. of days.

Air Transportation

With an eye on the the commissioning of the prestigious International Container

Transhipment Terminal at Vallarpadam by Kochi port, several logistics companies are

gearing up to offer modern logistics services in the region. The Kochi-based Unilog is one

such company that has launched services to offer fast and secure services across Kerala and

to other States in the South with its modern infrastructure and technology.

Mr Mohammed Sabah, Executive Director, Unilog, pointed out that Kochi is poised to

become an export-import hub for the southern States as the proposed ICTT at Vallarpadam is

expected to handle around one million teus(20-equivalent foot units) a year.

He said the company has set up a one lakh sq. ft. warehousing facility, besides deploying a50-strong fleet of high-security GPS-enabled containerised vehicles with real-time tracking.

The company also offers 24-hour express parcel delivery anywhere in Kerala.

Unilog has also launched 150 retail express stores in all the towns in the State, he added.

Future plans

On their future plans, he said the company proposed to extend its services throughout theSouth by the month-end and would have a pan-India presence by 2012.Given the country's

emergence as a business hub, it needs logistics solutions that are contemporary and devoid ofthe burden of legacy solutions and obsolete processes, he added.

The setting up of a facility in Kochi would further help the company grab more opportunities

in the maritime sector as it is a major Indian port that features prominently on the leading searoutes.Besides, its strategic proximity to international sea routes and a crucial international

maritime highway on the East-West trade route would help attract cargo to the region, hesaid.
