Production for domestic sales to total production exceeded 40% indicating increasing domestic importance and contribution. It was the first double-digit growth since August 2015. The 4M16 production was 654,111 units, down 0.5% YoY due to a contraction in the first two month from the excise tax issue. Production, domestic sales and exports dropped MoM due to many public holidays in April. Domestic sales grew for the first time this year April domestic auto sales were 54,986 units, up 2% YoY. Growth was mainly from passenger cars and one-ton pick-up trucks and pick-up passenger vehicles (PPV) thanks to a gradual economic recovery from the government’s stimulus packages. April was the first month that showed positive YoY growth in domestic car sales this year. The 4M16 domestic sales were 236,546 units, down 6% YoY, but the YoY figures seemed to be getting better each month. Units exported dropped 2% YoY while export value surged Auto exports for April were 80,491 units, down 2% YoY resulting from a drop in eco-car sales. Meanwhile, export value was Bt43bn, up 10% YoY thanks to growth in PPVs switching from eco cars. PPV prices are usually higher than eco-car prices. PPV exports to the Middle East, Australia and Asia surged 126% YoY. Export value growth turned back to double-digit after approached zero growth in March. Production grew 12% YoY

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) reported total car production for April of 138,237

units, up 12% YoY as production for domestic sales gained momentum of +32% (+208%

for PPV, +68% for double-cab, +17% for single-cab and +19% for passenger cars).

Production for domestic sales to total production exceeded 40% indicating increasing

domestic importance and contribution. It was the first double-digit growth since August

2015. The 4M16 production was 654,111 units, down 0.5% YoY due to a contraction in

the first two month from the excise tax issue. Production, domestic sales and exports

dropped MoM due to many public holidays in April.

Domestic sales grew for the first time this year

April domestic auto sales were 54,986 units, up 2% YoY. Growth was mainly from

passenger cars and one-ton pick-up trucks and pick-up passenger vehicles (PPV) thanks

to a gradual economic recovery from the government’s stimulus packages. April was the

first month that showed positive YoY growth in domestic car sales this year. The 4M16

domestic sales were 236,546 units, down 6% YoY, but the YoY figures seemed to be

getting better each month.

Units exported dropped 2% YoY while export value surged

Auto exports for April were 80,491 units, down 2% YoY resulting from a drop in eco-car

sales. Meanwhile, export value was Bt43bn, up 10% YoY thanks to growth in PPVs

switching from eco cars. PPV prices are usually higher than eco-car prices. PPV exports to

the Middle East, Australia and Asia surged 126% YoY. Export value growth turned back to

double-digit after approached zero growth in March. The 4M16 export value grew 11% YoY

thanks to healthy growth each month.

We rate the automotive sector NEUTRAL

Automotive figures have been better since the beginning of this year from a recovery in

automotive production growth as well as domestic sales growth. We view production for

domestic sales as a leading indicator of future domestic sales since automakers generally

produce as ordered. We expect YTD production growth to turn positive in the next month.

Although unit export growth dropped, export value still grew at a double-digit rate. We rate

NEUTRAL for the automotive sector with a positive outlook.
