From Peshawar To Bethlehem

Writers are seldom at a loss for words. Post Peshawar16/12 I was shell shocked, and am still strugglingto piece together my thoughts. No words suffice to

condemn this carnage, described by some as beastly orinsane. I beg to differ, because this is not animal behaviour, nor were the perpetrators of this crime against humanityinsane. They were as highly focused as the SS Nazi troopsof Hitler, who exterminated millions of Jews during WorldWar II.

Most perpetrators of genocide justify their acts under some ideology orother, especially when they perceive somebody else as the “other”. So they arenot insane, nor their actions inane. They are so strongly motivated, brainwashedif you like, that they are actually inured to the “other’s” pain, and even their ownimpending suicidal death. Religious fundamentalists, under the pretext of“Islam” are killing indiscriminately in Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, and Kenya; and mostrecently in Australia and now Peshawar. Be it the ISIS, LeT, Boko Haram or theTaliban, they all have a common denominator – to decimate the “other”.

History is replete with religious wars in the name of crusades, jihad, dharamyudhs etc, in which the perpetrators justify their actions. I am no one tojudge the past, or see things out of context; but such actions have absolutely noplace in our modern world; where there are ample opportunities for dialogueand dispute resolution with the support of information technology and interna-tional arbitration.

Since Peshawar happened just a week before Christmas my thoughts flewto Bethlehem, the place of Jesus’ birth, which we are now commemorating. Atthat time the angels heralded “Glory to God in the highest and peace to peopleon earth”. This touching nativity scene, popularized in Christmas cards, cribs, carols and tableaux, was rudely shattered shortly thereafter. The reigningJewish king, Herod, perceived a threat to his hegemony. Who was this “other”,this pretender to the throne? The king would brook no challenge. The chal-lenger had to be eliminated immediately.

The Bible recounts the subsequent horrific act of infanticide. “Herod wasfurious on realizing that he had been fooled by the wise men, and in Bethlehemand its surrounding district he had all the male children killed, who were twoyears old or less, reckoning by the date he had been careful to ask the wise men. Then were fulfilled the words spoken through the Prophet Jeremiah” (Lk 2:16-

TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF! Yes it’s a New Year, and soeverybody thinks it’s time now

to make a new beginning. The NewYear is a good time to make thesame old resolutions – of becom-ing a good guy, to stop drinking, orsmoking, or going to office ontime,……… a whole lot of things wecan think of. Good thoughts, butwhatever happens to all those reso-lutions when it comes to the crux ?All is forgotten and we are back toour old usual selves.

One point that hits the mind – why is itthat we wait until the last day of the yearor for the First day of the New Year inorder to make a resolution for change? Or like, people express their love forothers on Valentine Day – why not onother days ? Something to think about!

Normally, we make all sorts of resolu-tions for ourselves, and there may betimes when we have succeeded – wemay have turned over a new leaf. That’sgood, but have we ever thought oftaking it forward from there, influencingothers to make a change – a change forthe better of course, help them to turnover a new leaf ? What are we waitingfor ? Are we waiting for the First dayof the year to do that ? Or are we justhappy and contended with our ownachievement ?

Well, read this one – I have been travel-ling for the past many years to my officein the Central suburbs and over theyears I have witnessed a people cross-ing the tracks to get to the other side ofthe station; a number of people havebeen killed in the process. The Rail-ways have done and are still doing theirbit to stop crossing on the railway tracks. And I thought to myself, on my part, what could I do, to prevent such trag-edies ? Could I be of some help ?. Andso, when I would see a person crossing

the tracks, I would ask them, “you crossthe railway tracks everyday ?” And hewould say, “yes I cross the tracks every-day” to which I would respond, “Then, consider TODAY AS YOUR BONUSDAY !” and walk ahead. Many of themwould seem startled by my comment, but utter a ‘feeble’ sorry. There wasone particular young man to whom Isaid these words and I walked ahead, expecting either a ‘sorry’ or nothing at all. To my utter surprise however, he

came up behind me and blurted out,“uncle, sorry, I will not do this again”.That was not the last day of the yearor the first day of the year, but hemade a resolution at that very mo-ment, never ever to cross the railwaytracks. He had ”TURNED OVER ANEW LEAF” – he got a New lease ofLife, so to say !

Would you like to read this one – Acollege youth at Malad station wouldstand at the edge of the platform wait-ing for a train and in the meanwhile, would just spit on the tracks. I went upto him and asked him, “so, you go tocollege”, to which he replied, “yes”.The next thing I asked him, “in college,do they teach you to spit like that ?” Henodded his head and said, “sorry, Iwill not do this again.” I did keep acheck on him thereafter, he had in-deed ”TURNED OVER A NEW LEAF!” I later learnt that he was studyingDentistry.

So folks, there is no auspi-cious day or time for making aresolution for change. TURNOVER A NEW LEAF now, whywait for the Last day, or for theFirst day of the New Year. To-morrow may be too late, per-haps there will be no Tomor-row, there will be no New Year! But for the present, yes, AHAPPY & PROSPEROUSNEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!!

Turning Over A New Leaf !

Have I been true to mygoals and to myself? What gifts andawakenings did I receive that I did notplan on? How have I been challenged, and have I found a way to turn mychallenges into blessings?” Greet thisNew Year with a sense of joyful an-ticipation. December 25 NoAngst , Please

The day is celebrated the worldover by Christians and non- Christiansalike as the birthday of Jesus Christ, the Founder of Christianity. In very manycountries, it is a holy day as well as aholiday. The news reports that the NDAII government has decided to celebratethis day, which happens to also be thebirthday of NDA I PM Atal BehariVajpayee as Good Governance Day,should not upset anyone in theleast.Gandhiji`s birth anniversary wasrecently observed as Swachh BharatDin. Similarly, Christians observe thebirthday of Jesus` mother Mary - Sep.8 - as the Day of the Girl Child. Theseonly serve to enhance celebrations andadd reverence/value to the occasion, rather than dishonour the worthies, concerned.

The Opposition parties` disrupt-ing the proceedings in Parliament overthese non-issues is nothing short of acriminal waste of people`s money andprecious time. They seem to be unitedin a common one point agenda: toensure, in a desperate bid for relevance, that the Government of the day is pre-vented from functioning and fulfilling

its promises to the people .This mustbe roundly condemned by all Indianswho have the nation`s interests,at heart.

Animals in Heaven? The recent statement by Pope

Francis while trying to console a youngboy who was grieving over the loss ofhis pet dog that “ Paradise is open to allof God’s creatures” has raised manyan eyebrow even as the Holy Fatherhas endeared himself to animal loversand confirmed what a few pet ownershave believed and proudly announcedin the ‘pet obituary’ of prominent news-papers that their pet has left for his/ herheavenly abode. While there is nothingwrong with such outpourings of griefand sentiment over the irretrievableloss of a family pet , what is blasphe-mous is the conferring of sainthood onthe pet by some. Not long ago , it wasshocking to hear the views of a Catholictheologian who stated that “ it is notknown for sure whether or not there areanimals in heaven . However, when theday of resurrection comes , besidesthe resurrected bodies, we will all bepart of a resurrected universe, which isreasonable to believe that there mayanimals in heaven” Such views areoften misleading and do not form partof the church’s official doctrine andteaching, and often cause confusion inthe minds of the faithful.

17).Jeremiah had prophesied about

700 years earlier: “A voice is heard inRamah, lamenting and weeping bit-terly: it is Rachel weeping for her chil-dren, because they are no more” (Jer31:15). Rachel was the grand daugh-ter-in-law of Abraham, considered thepatriarch of the Jews, Christians andMuslims. Ramah is in the vicinity ofJerusalem and Bethlehem. This geno-cide occurred during the BabylonianCaptivity of the Israelites in what ismodern day Iraq.

The first case of infanticide re-corded in the Bible was several centu-ries earlier when the Israelites were inEgypt. Feeling threatened by the in-creasing number and economic cloutof the Israelites in his territory, Pharaohissued this diktat, “Throw every new-born boy into the river, but let all thegirls live” (Ex 1:22).

God then sends Moses to reasonwith Pharaoh, to let the Israelites returnto the land of their forefathers. ButPharaoh digs in his heels; so God sendsten plagues, in ascending order of in-tensity. Pharaoh doesn’t budge. Mosesagain goes to Pharaoh to warn him ofthe impending tenth plague. God saidthrough Moses, “At midnight I shallpass through Egypt, and all the first-born in Egypt will die, from the first-born of Pharaoh, heir to his throne, tothe first-born of the slave-girl at the mill, and all the first-born of the livestock. And throughout Egypt there will begreat wailing, such as never before, nor will be again” (Ex 11:4-6). Thesescenes were immortalized in the epicmovie “The Ten Commandments”, withthe parting of the Red Sea, and the freepassage of the Israelites, led by Moses.

It was Moses who gave the thumbrule “an eye for an eye”, oft referred toas the Mosaic Law. This is well docu-mented in the Book of Exodus quotedabove. It is significant that the threemajor Semitic religions – Judaism,Christianity and Islam venerateAbraham, Moses and the first five books

of the Holy Bible. The Jews refer to it asthe Torah, the Muslims as the Torethand Christian scholars as thePentateuch (Greek for five books).

The question that arises is, shouldwe continue with the Mosaic Law of titfor tat? Here is where the heraldic tid-ings of Bethlehem come – Peace, notwar or revenge. It is for this reason thatJesus is referred to as the Prince ofPeace. Even in his farewell discourseto his disciples he said, “My peace Igive to you, the peace that the worldcan’t give”.

This Christmas after we have fin-ished with the fun and frolic of cakesand carols, let us get back to the realtask of promoting peace in the NewYear. A good beginning would be torecognize the “other” as a brother orsister, and not as a threat. Let us allcollectively strive for peace. That in-deed should be the last word, not theloss of words. Peace – Shanti – Sa-laam!

India: Bishops and Christian leadersIndia say they celebrate Christmas thisyear with "a heavy heart" because of theviolence against Christians in variousparts of the country.

The leaders of various denominationssaid in a statement in Delhi that attacksagainst their people have increasedacross the country, especially in thestates of "Chhattisgarh, MadhyaPradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh andnow in the territory of the capital cityDelhi.”

Archbishop Anil Couto of Delhi signedthe statement along with and otherCatholic, Orthodox, Protestant Bish-ops and civil society leaders.

“The burning of Saint Sebastian'schurch in Delhi, as well as other inci-dents of targeted violence, show con-tempt not only towards the religiousfeelings of our community, but also forthe protection guaranteed in the Con-stitution of India," the Christian leaderssaid.

They explained that these acts of vio-lence are not isolated incidents, butpart of a series of interconnected ac-tions by various non-state actors. "Manypoliticians have called for national lawsagainst conversion, measures that af-fect the Christian and Muslim commu-nities, although not mentioned."

"The well organized campaign, also by

senior members of Parliament belong-ing to the ruling party, is a threat topeace and national harmony and callsinto question the identity and patrio-tism of different religious minorities inIndia", discrediting and exposing themto further violence.

The statement said, "While the govern-ment won the election by presenting aplatform of 'development and goodgovernance', radical groups see theirprogram of hatred and religious na-tionalism approved. It is a blatant at-tempt to sabotage the Indian Constitu-tion, which guarantees freedom of ev-ery Indian citizen to profess, practiceand propagate their religion."

The leaders noted that the measures, paradoxically called "Laws for religiousfreedom", in force in several Indianstates, have been in fact limited and"have been used against minorities, giving police the power to disrupt, ar-rest and punish priests, religious and

church operators".

The Bishops have sent a memoran-dum to the government that lists vari-ous "representative episodes of hostil-ity and discrimination suffered by Chris-tians throughout India". They reportcases of "social boycott" (some Chris-tian missionaries are denied entry inover 50 villages in the region of Bastarin Chhattisgarh, and some Christianfamilies in Orissa are not allowed to usethe public well in the village); physicalaggression in many states; desecra-tion of religious buildings.

The statement concluded remindingthat India’s founders were committedto ensure that the rights of all are pro-tected regardless of religion, gender orcaste and hoping that a strong politicalwill of civil and political institutions wouldstop this discrimination and targetedviolence.

Marriage Banns - anarchaic concept?

The system of reading the Bannsof an intended marriage to establishthe ‘free state’ of the parties has been invogue for centuries. Historically, Chris-tian marriages were looked upon as‘Public Religious Acts’ subject to eccle-siastical control. Sometime in the 2nd

century, it was made obligatory to makeknown all proposed marriages to theBishop. This practice continued till the5th century when the parochial systemcame into force. The responsibility ofchecking the illicit / invalid marriageswas shifted to the Parish Priests withinputs from reputable parishioners. It isbelieved that towards the end of the12th century, the practice of reading theBanns started in France to check im-pediments of consanguinity, affinity andprevious marriage.

In almost all the Parishes today, the Banns are read only at the ParishMass and not at all the Masses. If thepurpose of reading the Banns is toannounce the same to as many parish-ioners as possible, it is only reasonablethat all the Masses should be covered. The Parishioners are conscience boundto inform the Parish Priest should theyknow of any impediment. Confessors, lawyers, physicians and mid-wives areexempt from disclosing the impedi-ment if it has come to their notice in thecourse of their professions. The sys-tem also provides for exemption forthose who fear it would cause greatdetriment to themselves or their fami-lies. This is something that is difficult tocomprehend.

Of course, there are other optionsavailable. The announcement can beput on the notice board but it is surpris-ing that this is not done. Notice boardsare filled with extraneous materials. It isall the more important when Banns arenot read at all the Masses. Today al-most every Church brings out a ParishBulletin at least once a Month whichgenerally reaches every home. It isdifficult to believe that this option hasnot been exercised as yet. In fact this isthe best mode that is likely to have thedesired effect.

We are in the 21st century and theconcept of reading the Banns seems tobe out-dated. It will be interesting if theChurch publishes data from 2001 on-wards as to how many marriages have

been aborted as a result of disclosure ofimpediments by those who are sup-posed to be duty bound. In the presentsystem there are provisions, under cer-tain conditions, to even grant exemptionby getting sworn testimony by two per-sons known to the intending party. If thisis not possible the intending party cantake an oath with two witnesses to es-tablish ‘free state’. Despite this, many acouples are made to run from pillar topost putting undue mental stress andanxiety not only on the intending partiesbut also on their parents and other rela-tives. Sometimes Parish Priests causehardships for the intending parties bynot suggesting alternatives. In oneknown case, an issue which was hang-ing fire for weeks was settled byArchbishop’s House within minutes. Inthis case the Parish Priest was notamused that the intended party ap-proached the higher authority.

When provisions do exist, itmakes no real sense to continue thesystem of actually reading the Bannsand that too selectively only at theParish Mass. Pope Francis is a veryprogressive and practical mindedPontiff and should take a call on thisarchaic tradition which has lost rel-evance in contemporary world. Inci-dentally, rules concerning marriage, annulment as well as those relating toother Sacraments are not followeduniversally but selectively which makea mockery of the system. Tolerancelevels are high in Western countries. This also needs to be addressed.

Congress in LimboThe outcome of the J & K as well as

Jharkhand elections is a final ‘shape-upcall’ for the Congress Party becausethey have received several ‘wake up’calls earlier but they have preferred toadopt the ostrich like attitude. Actually, their approach reminds one of the threemonkeys – Mikazu who sees no evil[problem], Mikazaru who hears nothingand Mazaru who speaks nothing. Theleadership is unfazed with these hugeset-backs.

The GOP of India – the Indian Na-tional Congress is a party with a historywhich dates back to the early part of thelast century. It was nurtured by very tallCongress stalwarts selflessly over the

years till the rot started in the latter halfthe last century. The last real successthe party tasted was under late RajivGandhi [never mind if it was a sympa-thy vote] but after that it has seendownward slide. The Congress Party isnow facing the prospect of being calleda fringe party in the Indian polity. It nolonger poses any threat even to thesmallest party. Not a proud moment fora party which ruled for 60 odd years.

The party needs to introspect if ithas the interest of the country at heart.India has moved ahead of family poli-tics – the Abdullas in J & K are on theirway out. The likes of Yadavs in UP mayface similar fate in the next round. Eventhe Badals are not so well entrenchedin the Punjab. Unfortunately, the youngGandhi scion does not think so. TheMama-Baba duo is determined to seethe ultimate demise of the party whichstill has a good support thanks toHindutwa agenda. It simply lacks acharismatic leadership. The party needssomeone, like Biblical Moses who gavehis people a new life, to revive the pastglory.

The mother-son duo needs totake a break – a five year sabbatical. It is time someone else steps in.Priyanka Gandhi can lead the party.Someone like Jyotiraditya Scindia,43 year old alumnus of StanfordGraduate School, can be projectedas the new face of the party. With 12years of legislative experience, he ischarismatic with good speech deliv-ery besides being articulate. If any-one can pull the party out of themalaise, it is this young and dynamicman with a cool head. He is forcefuland has the ability to convince hisopponents. He is respected acrossthe political spectrum. He could bethe game changer for the party. Butwill the Gandhis agree to create thatspace for him? Well, that is the mootpoint and an important one at that!A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR 2015

This is a key question as the Holiday Season quickly approaches:“Do you live to eat or eat to live?”

If you eat to live then you are practicingthe moral or cardinal virtue called “Tem-perance”. But if you live only to eat,Saint Paul calls this the god of the bellyor classical spiritual theology term thisas the Capital sin of Gluttony!

A concise and easy to rememberdefinition of Gluttony is the following:“Gluttony is a disordered desire to eatand drink.” The key word is disordered!Indeed we must eat; otherwise we willdie—this is common sense! However, the problem is in the disorder in themanner of eating!

Indeed there is a real epidemic ofover-eating and gluttony. Articles havebeen written in the past years of obesityamong so many in the country. Therehave also been articles written on thedanger that obese children will incur intheir near future!

High cholesterol, high blood-pres-sure, diabetes, possibility of heart at-tacks and strokes, intestinal problemsand ulcers—are just a few of the nega-tive side-effects of those who are livinga gluttonous life-style. There is a sayingthat rings true: “There are more in thecemetery for gluttony than for wars!”We are digging our graves with ourteeth.

Gluttony can manifest itself in agreat variety of manners, but when all issaid and done it is an eating disorder. What might be some ways that gluttonymanifests itself? First of all simply over-

eating or eating too much! Others mightfall in to gluttony by eating too quicklyor voraciously! Still others might begluttonous in the sense that they eat atany time and place and have no senseof order in their eating habits—theymight be the perpetual nibblers, hav-ing as distant cousins the rabbits! Thenthere is the class of glutton that eatsonly what he wants, the food that helikes, the food that damages hishealth(in disobedience to his doctor),rather than eating the healthy food thathe knows he should consume. This toois gluttony! Then there is the gluttonwho drinks too much—this too is glut-tony, as well as the person addicted todrugs! In other words, the sin of glut-tony is much more extensive that mightmeet the naked eye!

REASONS FOR GLUTTONY?They are many! one of the primaryreasons for gluttony is the simple avail-ability of food and eating. Whereveryou turn in any small, moderate or bigcity you are bombarded with Restau-rants, all competing among themselvesto get customers.

Then there is the “All you can eatbuffet”. We all know what these placesare and the temptation that comes withentering the door! The temptation isvery simple! This “All you can eat buf-fet” gives you an incredible price:Wow!!! So what happens? Before youenter you promise that you will controlyour appetites! But then after finishingyour 2nd huge plate, you reason: “WellI paid for it; why not go back and get my3rd or 4th plate, even though after your2nd you are already stuffed and yourpants buckle have no further holes toadjust your bulging waist-line! Againstreason and common sense you go totown! That very night and the followingmorning you regret having over-eaten.

Another reason for giving in to thesin of gluttony is what we might call the“Law of compensation” and it is this! When you are experiencing, what St.Ignatius calls a state of desolation—sadness, discouragement, tepidity, lack

of faith, hope and charity, and life seemsto have no glimmer or meaning—thatis the time when the devil will tempt youat your weak point. And your weakpoint might be simply this—to seekrefuge in the pleasure of the palate andthe place at the table or the raid of theRefrigerator! Give it whatever term youlike!

In other words, explained theo-logically, the human heart has beenmade to be filled with God and indeedonly God can fill our deepest yearn-ings. Saint Augustine in his Confes-sions coined the classic: “O Lord youhave made our hearts for thee and ourhearts are restless until they rest inthee.” In other words there is an emptyhole in our hearts placed there by GodHimself. If this empty hole is not filledby a love for God then it will be filledwith another God and that can be asSaint Paul calls it “The god of the belly.”The Angelic Doctor, Saint ThomasAquinas, gives it another twist. Thissuperb Doctor of the Church points outthat either we will fall in love with thetrue God or we will fall in love with thefalse god. And that false god can beone of many, but it could be the god ofgluttony! In other words, it is idolatryPut simply, if we put any person, place, thing, object or even idea above theOne true God, then we have fallen intothe sin of idolatry. Indeed how easy it isto take our eyes of Our Lord and SaviorJesus Christ and to go after false gods.Never forget: our God is a jealous Godand will take 2nd place to no person, place or thing. He is a jealous lover! In conclusion, if you have fallen intogluttony never become downhearted, discouraged, or lose hope! Our God isa patient, loving, kind, compassionateand merciful God. Indeed the Psalmistasserts: “Our God is slow to anger andrich in forgiveness.” Let us pray as theHoliday season approaches in whichwe give thanks to God for all His won-derful gifts, we rejoice at the Birth ofJesus the Lord and usher in the New

New Year resolu-tions have alwaysbeen a part of thefabric of Christianlife.

“Trust the Lord and sincerely worshiphim; think of all the tremendous thingshe has done for you”. 1 Sam.12:24. Weall have dreams, talk about hope andhow tough things are. At the same timewe try to prevent the worst from hap-pening by trying to take control.

There are no rules for complicated situ-ations which might arise. But there isevidence in how, by asserting oneselfto face the full realism can make aperceptible change through resolu-tions.

Fear often keeps the faithful in doubtabout their resolves. Jesus said, “Don’tbe afraid. Just trust me.” Mat. 5:36. Asimple new year resolution without thephobia, but cautiously taken can leadto a measure of success in solving acrisis. In Charles Dickens’ Great Ex-pectations, the lawyer Jaggers tellsPip, “Take nothing on its looks; takeeverything on evidence. There’s nobetter rule.”

It makes sense that even themost delicate and difficult situ-ation one encounters can be agood new year resolution tobring about change providedwe are not afraid, or in doubt. Aperson can eloquently defend,

protect, preserve and even prevent theforces of good from being demonized.

Resolve this new year to forgive anenemy, to clarify hope in trust, to pre-vent evil, promote goodwill, understandproblems on the domestic front, makesharp distinctions between opposingvalues among friends, to abandon badhabits, and to be a better person.

It’s worth noting that whatever resolu-tion you make may not germinate in-stantly, it will first take root, sprout assome beans do after gentle wateringand fearless attention to growth. Thegrim reality is that making a resolutionis nerve-shattering and the fear of fail-ing even worse. No one says it will beeasy. It was not meant to be.

Come, let us try to enjoy a lifetime ofhappiness by collectively making a newyear resolution; one resolve to blendwith those of many others who wish tojoin in this single effort:

But first, let us circumvent the doubtand debate factor, by making sense ofthe resolution we are about to take on.The world has been clamoring for Peacesince man moved out of the stone- age, perhaps earlier.

Peace is possible.Start working for peace with childrenfrom the moment they enter ‘nursery’.Teach them civics at home, in prayers,at school and go on with it even whentheir visions and dreams begin to grow.Always harp on one subject, Civics, then human rights, respect for the oldand infirm. Think about it… Let us be-gin from this year.

Wise Man Found The Lord

Epiphany, celebrated on January 6 is oneof the most important feasts of the Catholic Church in which we celebrate the

‘Manifestation of Our Lord Jesus Christ’ to theGentiles through His manifestation to the threewise men --- Magi (Matthew Chapter 2, verses1-12). Epiphany is also the last day of Christ-mas when the three wise men presented theirgifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to theinfant Jesus and go separate ways.

This episode from the Gospel of St. Matthew speaks aboutonly three wise men who brought gifts of gold, frankincense andmyrrh to the baby Jesus. But there is an addiction for thisepisode to give a specific message to Christians in the form of‘The Fourth Magi’.

When those three wise men travelled from the east underthe guidance of the star, they met together and proceeded tomeet the Messiah. The fourth wise man also joined them. Whilethey were on their journey with their respective gifts, the fourthman stopped on the midway to assist a man who had beenrobbed and left half-dead by dacoits. The other three men didnot wait for him but continued their journey, as it was alreadygetting late.

When the fourth man finished dressing up the wounds ofthe victim by taking him to a nearby inn, it was already dawn andthe star which guided them all through the night disappearedfrom the sky. Unfortunately, it did not appear or it was not visibledue to a cloud cover on the following night and the night afterthat. Since the other three men had already crossed somedistance, it was not a problem for them. The fourth wise man losthis way and he did not know what to do. But, he continued hisjourney hoping to find the Child Jesus in Bethlehem. As Jesuswas taken to Egypt by then, for 33 long years he kept onsearching for Him. He became naturally quite old and weary bythen.

One day, he saw a huge crowd of people in Jerusalem andenquired what was going on and they replied, “Jesus of Nazarethis being put to death.” “Jesus!” the wise man was astonished to hear it and said, “Itis for He whom I’ve been searching for all these years.”

The wise man made his way through the large crowd ofpeople and at last found that Jesus was hanging on the Crossin between two thieves. The wise man was in tears. “Lord,” hesaid, “I’ve been searching for you all these years and now thatI’ve found you, you have been nailed on the Cross.”

“But you had already found me 33 years ago,” said Jesus. The wise man was confused! “How is it possible? I’ve

been searching for you all these years and you say I’ve foundyou?”

“Didn’t you stop in between your journey 33 years ago tohelp a man when he was cruelly beaten up by thieves and lyingbruised by the roadside?” said Jesus.

The wise man then remembered the incident and wasamazed! “Were you the same man, Lord,” he asked.

“Yes,” said Jesus. “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to oneof the least of these who are members of my family, you did it tome.” (Matthew 25:40).

The fourth wise man bowed his head in reverence andwent back home with great joy in his heart for having found theLord.

so all constructed boats and left.Except for Love. Love was the onlyone who stayed.

Love wanted to hold out until the lastpossible moment.

When the island had almost sunk,Love decided to ask for help. Rich-ness was passing by Love in a grandboat. Love said, “Richness, can youtake me with you?”

Richness answered, “No, I can’t.There is a lot of gold and silver in myboat. There is no place here for you.”Love decided to ask Vanity who wasalso passing by in a beautiful vessel.“Vanity, please help me!” “I can’thelp you, Love. You are all wet andmight damage my boat,” Vanityanswered.

Sadness was close by, so Loveasked, “Sadness, let me go with

you.” “Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that Ineed to be by myself!” Happinesspassed by Love, too, but she was sohappy that she did not even hearwhen Love called her.

Like: Suddenly, there was a voice,“Come, Love, I will take you.” It wasan elder. So blessed and overjoyed,Love even forgot to ask the elderwhere they were going. When theyarrived at dry land, the elder went herown way. Realizing how much wasowed to the elder, Love askedKnowledge, another elder, “WhoHelped me?” “It was Time,” Knowl-edge answered. “Time?” asked Love.“But why did TIME help me?” Knowl-edge smiled with deep wisdom andanswered, “Because only Time iscapable of understanding howvaluable Love is.”

The Search of Love

Year under the loving gaze of MaryMother of God that we would prac-tice the virtue of temperance. In sum,let us not live to eat but eat to live! And as such the glorify God in ourmortal bodies which are destinedfor eternal glory!

Enjoy yourself with your familyand friends but don't forget to inviteInfant Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph toyour celebrations, you will be everblessed.

In this, oh so materialistic, world we live in, we’re inclinedto think of wealth in terms of

one thing only – money. Sure, it’sprobably the form of wealth thatmost people recognise the easi-est and want the most. But is it,really?

Let’s test your concept of wealth… Which would you rather have –R2,000,000 and an aggressive cancerwith six months to live, or no money butthe option of a long healthy life? It’s a bitof a no-brainer.

There are at least seven types ofwealth. When you consider them, youmight find that you’re wealthier thanyou realise!

1 Physical wealth. The first form ofwealth is your physical health (andwith this I include your mentalhealth). If you can’t get out of bed,it’s not much fun having millionsand not being able to enjoy them. Ifyou want to become truly wealthy,go for physical wealth first as thatwill give you the means to startacquiring other forms of wealth.

2 Relational wealth. We weren’tmeant to live in the forests alone. That’s why we’re lonely when weare disconnected from family, friends and society. Again, moneymeans very little when you haveno-one special to share it with. Iknow people who are fabulouslywealthy but who are miserably un-happy because their relationshipswith parents, partners, children, siblings or friends have disinte-grated. Strive to build up your rela-tional wealth and you will never belonely.

3 Spiritual wealth. This refers to your

How Wealthy Are You?

values and the development of yourspirit – the essence of who you are- through prayer, meditation or con-templation. Many people focus onexternal (material) wealth and neverdiscover internal wealth. They con-sequently never discover who theyreally are and die in poverty in thatregard. When you find yourself, you find the wealth that was put intoyou for success in this life.

4 “Meaning” wealth. This wealth isbuilt by discovering and develop-ing your reason for being on theplanet. This is the only way your lifewill truly have any meaning. At theend of your life, if you feel your lifehas had no purpose, you will feeldeep regret that your life has beenof no value.

5 “Memories” wealth. As we getolder, we are able to build thiswealth. Everybody has memories,

but not everybody has happymemories – of their childhood, oftheir partners, of their children, oftheir careers. This is one wealthyou cannot build at the end of yourlife. You have to build it now bycreating the memories you want tocarry with you for the rest of yourlife. When you live for others now,you will build a wealth of happymemories that will make you awealthy person as you age.

6 “Opportunities” wealth. Some getgiven many opportunities, someget very few opportunities, andsome create their own opportuni-ties. Some take the few opportuni-ties they get and turn them intosomething wonderful. Many getgiven opportunities which they failto recognise and never seize them. It’s up to you what you do with themany or few opportunities life givesyou. The way to build “Opportuni-ties” wealth is to learn to recogniseopportunities that come your way,no matter how small they may be,then use them to create magic.

7 Financial wealth. This wealth is theeasiest to spot, but not necessarilythe easiest to acquire. There is noget rich scheme that is really sus-tainable. Set yourself financialgoals, then work toward achievingthem and you will be able to buildwealth in this area.

As you build your career and your life, don’t chase financial wealth only. Makesure you build wealth in the other sixareas mentioned above and you willtruly be a wealthy person!
