“A man who stops advertising to save

money is like a man who stops a clock to save

    time.”Thomas Jefferson

    SedgeBrewery

On Tuesday 21 April we received the brilliant news that

The expression, first used in print by

Sir Thomas Browne , still stands true now as it

did over four centuries ago. In these unprecedented times we find ourselves as a nation and Garden Route community needing to look after those closest to us. Pine Lake Marina and Butterfly Blu Restaurant in

Pine Lake Marina and Butterfly Blu Restaurant had made a substantial pledge. This towards assisting communities in rural areas that have been badly affected by the COVID-19 lockdown. They sent this report:-

    “charity begins at home”

    back in 1642

ature doesn’t always talk to Google.” N

    Pythagoras,1653AD.

I thought we it had got it right this time, you know.... because of the ‘RWR’ method we had engaged.

Oh? That’s Reverse Weather Reading, for those of you who aren’t in the know.

Let me explain. In the past, whenever planning a camping trip, we have always checked the weather forecast first, because, that seemed like The Right Thing To Do, I suppose.

But as it turned out, we have always got it wrong. ALWAYS. Or should I say, the WEATHER MEN (and WOMEN – sorry) have always got it wrong on our behalf.

    J u s t s m a l l u n e x p e c t e d differences, such as‘ M i l d a n d s u n n y, w i t h occas iona l c loud cover ’ b e c o m i n g ‘ To r r e n t i a l downpours with hurricane wind conditions’.... that sort of thing.

    Every Time.

And EVERY TIME these drastic weather changes would occur just as we parked our overloaded vehicle in the camp site and offloaded our big canvas, six-man tent, and other absolute necessities for a good weekend’s camping.

By absolute necessities, I mean important gear, including (but not limited to) pots and pans, sleeping bags, pillows, duvets, more pillows, blankets, special blankets we cannot sleep without, special pillows we cannot sleep without, soft toys (ditto), 4 x towels (beach), 4 x towels (shower), 4 x towels ( swim) , 6 x fun fami ly boardgames (still not opened), 3 x jigsaw puzzles (ditto), playing cards, bird books, snake books, out-door living magazines, 12 x suitcases containing 47 changes of clothing each, another three suitcases containing hiking shoes, walking shoes, ‘around the campsite’ shoes, ‘pee in the middle of the night’ shoes, ‘in case we go somewhere nice for dinner’ shoes, ‘sitting around the

braai’ shoes, ‘sitting around the braai and there’s mozzies’ shoes, flip flops, gum boots and crocs; 4 x fold-up mattresses, 2 x inflatable mattresses, 2 x inflatable mattress pumps that don’t work, 1 x brand new inflatable mattress pump that plugs into the lighter and still doesn’t work, 4 x inflatable mattress puncture repair kits (sans patches), plastic camping cutlery, plastic camping plates, plastic camping cups and plastic camping bowls, proper cutlery, plates, cups and bowls, (because who really wants to do plastic), a first aid kit with EVERYTHING (except plasters, headache pills, bandages and anti-septic ) (but if ever an emergency necessitates the need of St Johns Wort, depilatory cream or charcoal tablets – boy are we ready!), a hair-dryer without the two prong plug attachment which is, apparently, my job to pack, and, of course, no braai grid.

And so, with barely a patch of open grass left once all this important luggage has been unpacked and spread to the far corners of our site, the sky would suddenly darken with crowds of cumulus clouds, the temperature would drop alarmingly (actual alarms would go off), and the wind would wind its way up into a frenzy. And so we would find ourselves at the mercy of a perhaps menopausal Mother Nature and her rain-spewing minions.

Of course we would bravely attempt to set up camp anyway, because this was what precious ‘family together time’ was all about. And having paid good money for the camp site we were going to make darned sure we used it.

After two and a...nother two hours of trying not to murder one

ano the r w i th t en t po l e s (preferring to use our voices) and discovering that whilst the little canvas tent-peg bag did make an ideal receptacle for marbles, perhaps next time our son should TELL us that said tent pegs were safely in his bedroom cupboard BEFORE we departed, we would huddle together, Mrs Ed and I each holding one side of said tent, whilst our children gobbled bowls of cornflakes and water (“YOU SAID there’d be a shop at the camp site to buy milk!) then slept fitfully between us in their damp sleeping bags, clinging to their special pillows.

The next morning, once everything was conveniently drenched inside and out, we would haphazardly sling it all back into the vehicle and make an argument-riddled attempt to find some sort of chalet where we could sit in soaked clothes, cook our braai-wors on a one-plate stove (“Of COURSE I didn’t bring cooking oil. WHO packs COOKING OIL for a BRAAI?”), and stare out of the windows at the rain, wishing we were home where there’s TV, a corkscrew and no immediate necessity to teach the children gin rummy.

So... against such a background, you would probably understand why, after 12 or so of these annual expeditions, we took a ten year respite from camping holidays, so we could regroup, rethink and let our children u n d e r g o t h e n e c e s s a r y counselling. (My daughter says she still has the occasional nightmare about the gazebo incident of 2007 – this despite the fact that the boy from the campsite next door is a grown man now, only walks with a slight limp and has almost fully recovered from his PTGSD.)

But about a month ago I decided it was time. Time to face our fears and try again.

“It’s important that we get back on that horse,” I said to Mrs Ed. “Not that poor one from the Addo weekend?” she said, alarm showing in her eyes. I quickly explained that I was speaking metaphorically about camping, and that I had no intention of revisiting the ‘Game-viewing on Horseback’ activity as I was pretty sure the ban had been of a ‘life-time’ nature.

And so I booked a site, in the beautiful (it really is!) Bontebok Nature Reserve. I then persuaded our children – now fully grown and both partnered up with unsuspecting victims who have no idea of our camping pedigree – that they should join us. We were going to do it again. ONCE

    MORE INTO THE BREACH.

    “ H a v e y o u c h e c k e d t h e weather?” Mrs Ed quizzed, an involuntary shudder visibly vibrating up her spine

as we drove along the N2.

“Of course!” I said, feeling particularly proud of my new RWR methodology, “And do you know what? It’s going to be the DRYEST CAMPING TRIP WE’VE EVER HAD, because they have predicted rain the WHOLE weekend!”

And dry it was. Beautifully dry. Blazing sunshine, not a hint of wind, just GLORIOUS summer weather.

    For at least 12 minutes.

After that..... Well.... remember tha t r id icu lous ly s to rmy weekend about a week and a half ago, when it rained unabated for 72 hours?

    Yep, that was us.

(Here, he pauses, and takes a subtle bow)

Thank you! Thank you! You are too kind. We know you are all desperately waiting for the river-mouth to be open, and so undoubtedly very grateful for the

causing the car to rattle in no small way

part our family played in the precipitation process that may have assisted in the filling of the lagoon.

Of course we respectfully decline any offers of gratitude you may feel you need to bestow upon us in the form of cakes (Custard Slices), pies (Steak ‘n Kidney) and/or Amber Nectar

(Windhoek Draught), so please fight any overwhelming urge you might have to slip such things into an empty cooler-box I might have absent-mindedly left outside our offices (63 Main Road) the blue one just by the back door ....

You’d be mad if you didn’t!

Following the resignation and fairly swift departure of Knysna Municipality’s Chief Financial Officer Mbulelo Memani (see article in ‘Council News’ on page 4) the Knysna Ratepayers’ Association has issued the following statement.

“KRA takes note of the resignation of Mr Memani, the Knysna CFO, who reportedly spent his last day at work on 16 October, although he officially leaves the employ of the Municipality at the end of the month.

“The ANC and the Mayor, Councillor van Aswegen, agreed to Mr Memani’s request to work his last day on 16 October. KRA is, however, perplexed by the DA’s position that Mr Memani should stay on until the end of November because his expertise is required in dealing with the Adjustment Budget and the Auditor General.

“It is no secret that Mr Memani is the subject of an investigation, following a complaint by the KRA relating to the omission of contingent assets to the value of R60 million from the financial statements of the Municipality. Our complaint includes the allegation that the Auditor General was misled by the CFO about the reason for the omission of the assets.

“We are, therefore, relieved that the DA’s irrational position did not carry the day.

“We trust that the forensic investigation against Mr Memani will continue so that Mr Memani’s name can be cleared if he is not culpable, or to ensure that if he is guilty, a precedent is set that Knysna officials cannot simply escape the consequences of their wrongful actions by resigning.”

L o c a l U t o p i a C l i v i a s proprietor, Carrie Kruger, has once again walked off with armloads of prestigious awards for her spectacular plants and flowers, this after pitting her Clivia cultivating skills against competition from all over the world.

With so many international clivia shows - usually attended by international growers - being cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID crisis, the many clubs, and indeed the International Clivia Society itself, had to find a solution.

This led to the hosting of a series of ‘virtual shows’, which allowed members to display and show off their beautiful Clivias online.

    For these virtual shows, the

competitors were given a time limit to take photos of their best blooms, whilst they were in the prime of their flowering season, and post them onto a site for judging.

Utopia Clivias took part in several virtual shows this year and in five of them Carrie and her son/nursery partner Luke walked away with top accolades.

For the NCK Interspecific Clivia Virtual Show held from 22nd to 27th July, they won overall, '1st Runner Up to Best on Show 2020'.

From the 1st to 8th August, they won overall '1st Runner Up to Best on Show 2020' in the JCC Virtual Virtual Interspecific Show.

    A t t h e G a r d e n R o u t e Interspecific Show, held between 20th and 25th September,

Carrie's clivias really cleaned up, winning gold in four of the five classes as well as overall 'Best on Show 2020'. Meanwhile Luke proved that he had inherited some serious green-finger genes, winning '2nd runner up to Best on Show'.

In the Garden Route Miniata Virtual Show their nursery hauled in six golds out of the ten categories, as well as the 'Best Green On Show', the 'People's Choice Winner’ and ‘2nd Runner Up to Best On Show'.

Finally, in the prestigious Clivia Society International Virtual Show, held for a month from 3rd September to 3rd October to give growers around the world a chance to enter their plants, the Utopia Team won gold in no less than 11 of the 20 classes. Furthermore, they took 'Best on Show' and '2nd Runner Up to Best on Show'.

Every year Sedgefield's very own Clivia queen picks up a number of prestigious awards at these shows, and this year,

instead of letting the COVID crisis get to her, she has excelled more than ever!

Well done Carrie and Luke, and

the team at Utopia Clivias, for taking 2020 in your stride and continuing your winning streak during this ‘new normal’.

After 12 days of hiking along the rugged coastline from Nature's Valley to Wilderness, the Strandloper Project team of six finished their mission to survey washed up plastic and fishing debris along the shoreline.

Now that the hard trekking is done, the data analysis begins. Along a section of coastline that has rarely been hiked as a single route, we were able to conduct 33 Dirty Dozen surveys, 35 Plastic Bottle surveys and 1620 incidental sightings of fauna, plastic and fishing debris.

Taking a quick casual glance at the data and highlighting some indicator items, we counted 236 African Black Oystercatchers.

Sadly, as a major microplastic issue, nurdles became a theme of the expedition with continuous records from Nature's Valley to Wilderness. High concentrations of up to 1587 nurdles in a 35cm x 35cm quadrant were recorded on Robberg Beach and a mean of 550/20m2 in the Goukamma Nature Reserve.

As a terrestrial plastic pollution indicator, earbuds showed a distinctive pattern of high density close to river mouths, an indication of a loss from rivers, most likely through sewage s y s t e m s . We a r e s t i l l investigating whether the high numbers found are COVID-related. As consumers, we need to modify both our consumption of these items as well as our disposal of them.

Lids and bottle tops were another indication of terrestrial plastic

loss into the ocean and the distribution patterns were similar to earbuds, though the spread was further along the shorel ine east of r ivers , suggesting a longer drift time in the ocean as a consequence of their higher buoyancy.

C i g a r e t t e r e c o r d s w e r e particularly low, though located close to highly frequented beaches and rivers. It would appear that the inaccessibility of most of the beaches combined with minimal stormwater drains emptying onto the beaches on the route contributed to the low count of cigarette butts. In our 2019 expedition, we had high cigarette butt counts which were associated with stormwater drainage flowing directly onto beaches.

The highest commercial fishing debris was found in the Goukamma Nature Reserve though there were two high c o n c e n t r a t i o n w a s h - u p s be tween Kranshoek and Noetzie. Crab pots in particular were focused in the Goukamma Nature Reserve, indicating that this fishery targets the buffer zone of the MPA.

We found washed up plastic bottles along the entire route w i t h b o t t l e s b e i n g predominantly from carbonated drinks. With an average wash up density of 17 bottles/100m with a max of 57, it was moderately high, but encouragingly not as high as counts from our 2019 expedition. What was noticeable about the composition of bottle types was the high number of the smaller volume bottles that are produced to avoid the sugar tax. While the smaller bottles allow

soft drink companies to avoid this tax, ultimately the sale of smaller bottles results in an increase in the amount of plastic litter that enters the environment per volume of liquid.

The core goal of the expedition was to survey the distribution and composition of plastic and fishing pollution along the shoreline in the Southern Cape. Combined with the 2019 expedition we have been able to successfully map plastic pollution distribution along 365km of coastline.

Alongside our achievements regarding the survey, the privilege of hiking some of this remote coast l ine was a highlight. The spectacular geological features added a challenging component to the a d v e n t u r e . D u r i n g o u r preparation, two sections were identified as extremely difficult in that they would require arriving at low tide to negotiate our way around them. Planning a twelve-day hike to coincide

with tide tables is not easy, but fortunately, we got it spot on and safely made it around the danger points. The only time that we had to take an emergency exit was during the storm we experienced as we approached the Knysna Heads.

    Hiking sections that rarely get seen, we saw magnificent Fynbos recovering from the 2017 wildfires and daily s i g h t i n g s o f b r e a c h i n g Humpback Whales made this expedition through Plett , Knysna , Sedge f i e ld and Wilderness an unforgettable one.

As Project Leader, I would like to thank all our supporters for their contribution to the expedition and landowners for allowing us to traverse their properties. Most importantly, I would like to thank the team for their endurance, passion and enthusiasm, and mostly their humour, without which, the expedition would not have been possible.

Visit Knysna is delighted to congratulate the winner of this year’s Visit Knysna Tourism Month Photo Challenge, Emma Rorke.

Emma won a weekend getaway (incorporating meal and activity vouchers) in the Greater Knysna area. Niche winners were, Tanja Bantjes, ‘Daughter Diaries’, Ruth Hattersley and Vicky who each received a voucher to experience a unique activity or craft somewhere in the Greater Knysna area.

More than 70 entries were received for the challenge which ran from 24 to 27 September. Visitors and locals alike took photos of their various ‘happy places’ across the Greater Knysna area and shared them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hashtags # T o u r i s m M o n t h 2 0 2 0 a n d #KnysnaTourismMonth.

Due to the excellent weather experienced over the long weekend, the majority of the photos submitted were taken close to water with children playing in the lagoons or families enjoying the beach, whilst some shoppers explored the Knysna Waterfront. Other submissions included visitors at the Knysna Elephant Park, in the forest as well as at the iconic Knysna Heads, a forever-favourite photo spot. The most popular location amongst the submissions was the beautiful Jubilee Creek in the Goudveld Forest at Rheenendal.

Colleen Durant, General Manager of Visit Knysna said, “We are very excited by the interest shown in the competition and how many of our visitors and locals participated as they were discovering or even re-discovering ‘happy places’ during the long weekend. The photos submitted were a great reflection of our beautiful region and all it has to offer whether you are with friends and family or on your own. It is always fun to show off our area and we hope people will continue exploring and sharing their photos with us.”

As part of the campaign, every morning during the challenge, local travel blogger Rose Bilbrough visited a unique place somewhere in Greater Knysna and recorded live video feeds to the Visit Knysna Facebook Page. These posts created awareness of interesting places to explore whilst encouraging people to share their photos. Locations that Rose visited included the Spitskop Viewpoint on the R339, the Garden Route Trail Park near Karatara, Wild Oats Market in Sedgefield ( Saturday morning) and the Fossil Footprints near Platbank on the Blombos Trail in the Goukamma Nature Reserve.

The judging panel included Nicci Rousseau-Schmidt, owner of Knysna PR and project manager for the development of the new Visit Knysna website that is currently under production, well-known local photographer, Elle Redman and Colleen Harding, Knysna Accommodation Association (KAA) Marketing Coordinator and representative on the Visit Knysna Steering Committee. Each judge was asked to rate the photos on a scorecard and from there the top photos were selected. These were then divided according to Knysna’s four niche categories, and an overall grand prize winner was chosen.

Executive Mayor of Knysna, Cllr Elrick van Aswegen commented: “On behalf of the Greater Knysna I wish to thank all the participants for all their efforts. And to congratulate our locals who always rise to the occasion. Nothing ever seems to phase them and any request or invitation is always met with a ‘yes’.” “Congratulations to all the winners in this year’s Visit Knysna Tourism Month Photo Challenge. The Greater Knysna area has so much on offer, so I encourage the participants to continue e x p l o r i n g a n d t a k i n g advantage of its natural wonders and to showcase them to the world,” concluded Wesgro CEO, Tim Harris.

    EMMA WINS ‘VISIT KNYSNA’ PHOTO

Last week, on Thursday 15th October, one of the young 'Top Shots', Billy, had a flip flop malfunction whereby what seemed to be a factory fault, led to a thin piece of wire piercing the heel of his foot.

He was able to get to the centrally located health clinic in Sedgefield and once there he was helped out and patched up in no time. The staff at the clinic truly have the best interests of our community at heart and the 'Top Shots' grown-up representative, Jurgens Van Der Walt, was surreptitiously slipped some cash by a kind nurse and asked to 'get the kid a new pair of ‘plakkies'.'

All the workers at the clinic go above and beyond their call of duty. On a daily basis, they deal

SEDGE CLINIC IS THE TOPSwith crises and events that the regular person on the street could never imagine. They do all of this simply because of who they are, not for praise or for accolades. Nonetheless, in gratitude, thank you Sedgefield Clinic! Thank you for being a part of what makes Sedgefield an amazing place to live.

    E f f o r t s t o e s t a b l i s h a p e r m a n e n t s h e l t e r f o r Knysna’s homeless have been fast-tracked by the town’s municipality. These members of the community were housed in a temporary facility at Loerie Park shortly after the national lockdown came into effect. On 7 July 2020, Council resolved to utilise a portion of erf 1343, Church Street, for the construction of a permanent shelter.

Acting Municipal Manager Dr Louis Scheepers said that a committee has been formed to facilitate this process. “This g r o u p i s m a d e u p o f representatives from the Greater Knysna Business Chamber, the Rotary Club of Knysna, SAPS

    Knysna, the Knysna Community P o l i c e F o r u m a n d t h e D e p a r t m e n t o f S o c i a l Development.”

    Knysna Municipality, The Haven in Mossel Bay and the D e p a r t m e n t o f S o c i a l Development will be the primary custodians of the facility. It will be run by Hephziba Solutions, a registered NPO.

Aside from providing a safe haven to the greater Knysna area’s most vulnerable residents, the centre will offer a number of interventions. “This base will include a skills development faci l i ty to promote self-sustainability and addiction interventions run by the appropriate stakeholders. Where possible, efforts will be made to

reunite and reintegrate visitors to the shelter with their families.”

“As the Disaster Management Act Alert Level 1 allows certain sporting activities to resume, subject to strict adherence to the relevant regulations, we also need to consider an exit strategy for the temporary facility from Loerie Park,” Dr Scheepers continued. “Making Loerie Park available to the sporting public will, however, be a by-product of realising our main priority – implementing a permanent solution to the problem of vagrancy in the greater Knysna area.”

Dr Scheepers concluded by thanking the municipality’s partners. “This project could not

have got off the ground or progress without the ongoing engagement with and support from critical stakeholders. Our p a r t n e r s i n c l u d e t h e organisations represented on the committee and, amongst others, local religious organisations, the Knysna Alcohol and Drug Abuse Centre, Families South Africa, t h e R o c k C h u r c h , t h e Department of Labour, the Department of Health and, of course, the people of Knysna.”

The deadline for the submission of comments and or objections by the public was 16 October 2020. These will now be evaluated in order to allow the project to progress to the next stage.

Seven months have passed since the last freshStart SwopShop and it seems they will only re-open in January 2021.

But ... a new project, known as 'HELPING HANDS', has begun to flourish under the freshStart NPO umbrella. In reality, this is an established work with Martie Rooi, a longstanding volunteer and 'Mother of Smutsville,' as the Project Manager.

For many years, Martie has done what she does so well in her own, private capacity. However, she wanted to have the structure and fund-raising opportunities offered by an NPO and has decided to bring Helping Hands under freshStart's management. It will be exciting to watch this initiative grow in the Smutsville community as Martie and her crew of volunteers continue with the activities of First Aid, a Soup Kitchen, Sports Tournaments, Special Events and general community upliftment which is Martie's passion.

The first 'joint venture' will take place on Saturday, 31st October in Smutsville and will be a Go-Kart competition in which karts taking part will have been built using only recycled material. Everyone is looking forward to both children and their families being creative and having fun. There will be prizes for various categories. Any donations for prizes will be gratefully received. For more info contact Martie Rooi on 063-519-6472 or Annie Ogilvie on 084-804-0028.

Alzheimer’s Caregiving TipsPeople with Alzheimer’s disease need to be active and do things that they enjoy. However, it is not easy for them to plan their days and do different tasks. They may have trouble deciding what to do each day or getting started with a task or activity. Caregivers can help.

Activity PlanningPlan to include activities that the person with Alzheimer’s enjoys in your daily routine and try to do them at a similar time each day. They can be a part of the activity or just watch.

Here are things you can do to help the person enjoy the activity:• Match the activity with the person’s abilities.• Choose activities that are fun for everyone.• Help the person get started.• Decide if they can do the activity alone or need help.• Watch to see if the person gets frustrated.• M a k e s u r e t h e y f e e l successful and are having fun.• Let them watch if that is more enjoyable for them.

Try These Activities A person with Alzheimer’s disease can do different activities each day. This keeps life interesting and fun.

Here are some daily activities people with Alzheimer’s may enjoy:• Household chores: Washing dishes, setting the table, preparing food, sweeping the floor, dusting, sorting mail and clip coupons, sorting socks and folding laundry, different types of sor t ing eg . recycl ing materials.• Cooking and baking: Decide what is needed to prepare the dish; measure, mix, and pour; tell someone else how to prepare a recipe; watch others prepare food.• Exercise: Take a walk together, watch exerc ise videos/DVDs or TV programs made for older people, use a stationary bike, use stretching bands, throw a soft ball or balloon back and forth, lift weights or household items such as soup cans.• Music and dancing: Play music; talk about the music and

the singer, ask the person with Alzheimer’s what they were doing when the song was popular, sing or dance to well-known songs, attend a concert or musical program.• Pets: Feed, groom, walk, or just hold a pet.• Gardening: Take care of indoor or outdoor plants, plant flowers and vegetables, water the plants when needed, talk about how much the plants are growing.• Visiting with children: Play a simple board game, read stories or books, visit family members who have small children, walk in the park or around schoolyards, go to school even t s , t a lk abou t fond memories from childhood• G o i n g o n o u t i n g s : Remember to plan outings for the time of day when the person is at their best and make sure they are not too long. Visit a favourite restaurant, park, shopping mall, or museum.

    Incontinence

A person with Alzheimer's disease may develop other medical problems over time. These problems can cause more confusion and behaviour changes. The person may not be able to tell you what is wrong. One problem, incontinence, means a person cannot control their bladder and/or bowels. This may happen at any stage of Alzheimer's disease, but it is more often a problem in the later stages. Signs of this problem are leaking urine, problems emptying the bladder, and soiled underwear and bed sheets. Let the doctor know if you see any of these signs. They may be able to treat the cause of the problem.

Causes of IncontinenceThere are several possible causes. Some can be treated:

    Urinary tract infection

    Enlarged prostate gland

Too little fluid in the body (dehydration)

Diabetes that is not being treated

    Taking too many water pills

    Drinking too much caffeine

Taking medicines that make it hard to hold urine

When you talk to the doctor, be ready to answer the following questions:

What medicine is the person with Alzheimer's taking?

Does the person leak urine when they laugh, cough, or lift something?

    Does the person urinate often?

Can the person get to the bathroom in time?

Is the person urinating in places other than the bathroom? (This is very common)

Is the person soiling his or her clothes or bed sheets each night?

Do these problems happen each day or just occasionally?

    What To Do About Incontinence

Here are some ways you can deal with incontinence:

Remind the person to go to the bathroom every 2 to 3 hours. Don't wait for them to ask.

Show the person the way to the bathroom or take them there.

Watch for signs that the person may have to go to the bathroom, such as restlessness or pulling at clothes.

The 10th anniversary of Malan Optometris t in Sedgefield reminds us of the importance of our vision and provides an opportunity for us to consider our visual health once again.

Sedgefield has excellent local medical and para-medical p r a c t i t i o n e r s . S o m e advantages of supporting your local practitioners include building a relationship, easy access, faster service and of course having them readily available in the case of an emergency. Have you ever been confronted with broken or lost spectacles or contact lenses with your optometrist miles away? It really does help to have a local optometrist who knows you, your visual requirements and your lens prescription.

Supporting local businesses helps to establish a local circular economy with local investments and growth opportunities. It also enables

    those businesses, in turn, to support local charities, thus b e n e f i t t i n g t h e w h o l e community

A visit to your local optometrist allows you to experience and benefit from new technologies in the field of vision care. New technologies in contact lenses now include multifocal lenses as well as lenses for individuals with irregular corneas such as astigmatism or keratoconus. New contact lens materials allow one to wear contact lenses 24 hours per day for 30 days before removal and discarding. New lens materials and surface coatings make contact lens wear healthier and more comfortable for longer.

New technologies in spectacle l e n s d e s i g n a n d d i g i t a l manufacturing include premium, personalized and custom made single vision, computer or multifocal lenses for more complex prescriptions, frame styles and frame wearing position, as well as for individual head movements, for example

with office or reading work combined with tablets, phones and display monitors.

E l e c t r o n i c a n d electromechanical measuring equipment make testing quicker, more accurate and more comfortable for the patient. Computerized testing charts include more screening charts than were previously available. These include contrast vision testing charts to screen for possible cataract or retina pathologies. Here it should be noted that it is important to have your vision examined and your eyes tested, every two years, even when you can still see well, or annually if you are over 70 or suffer from diabetes or high blood pressure.

With new technologies such as these, Dawid and Hedwig at Malan Optometrist strive to provide all customers with quality, value for money and better vision for a better lifestyle for many years to come.
