The New Industry Standard

EASY TO READ, EASY TO USEFor most operators of atransport temperaturecontrol system, therefrigeration unit is not themost important aspect ofthe equipment. But the unitcontroller is. As with amobile phone, the keypadand screen (or “human-machine interface”) is thecritical point of contact withthe system. It can eithermake the system easy touse with error-free results or,conversely, complex to use and proneto mistakes.

Thermo King recognised this challengeby introducing the industry’s firstmicroprocessor controller (“Smart Reefer”) ten years ago. Thenext generation TM

(SR-2) sets an industry benchmark inease of use.

The SR-2 will become a standardfeature on top-of-the-range SL-400etrailer refrigeration units from March2004.

IMPROVED READABILITYA key feature of the new SR-2 is theindustry’s largest and clearesttemperature display. The screen isbright and the critical temperaturedata is readable from over 10 metres, day or night.

“We are confident that our customerswill get a real benefit from theimproved readability of the display,”says Bill Roxby, Marketing Manager,Diesel Truck and Trailer, “particularly

in terms of fleet monitoring. Becausethe display can be seen clearly from adistance, it is no longer necessary togo right up to each unit to view it.This will save time and make the jobmuch easier.” The viewing angle ofthe display has also been changedand the keypad and screen arepositioned closer to the operator.

SIMPLICITY ITSELF…IN THE LANGUAGE OF YOUR CHOICE!On-screen text is used to explain keyfunctions and alarm codes – and witha choice of over 20 languages, understanding and ease of use will bedramatically improved.

“The operation of the new SR-2 hasbeen designed for ease of use,”continues Bill Roxby. “It has beenmade much more intuitive, working inmuch the same way as an ATM cashdispenser machine. Companies withhigh driver turnover will reallyappreciate this simplicity.” Clear andunambiguous directions make everydriver operation simple and accurate, while “hot-keys” save time byactivating defrost and Cycle Sentry

(stop-start operation) withone touch.

ENHANCED DIAGNOSTICSUnderstanding andresponding to alarm codesquickly is critical to protectingtemperature-sensitive loads. The SR-2 not only displaysalarms with text descriptions, but it can also be configuredto show only critical alarms(while still logging all alarms). This will virtually eliminate“nuisance alarms”.

SR-2 owners have no need to investin retrofit data recorders. The SR-2will come as standard withCargoWatch, a fully certified (EN12830and TLMV) data logger. Systemmaintenance will be greatly facilitatedby data captured by a seconddedicated maintenance logger:ServiceWatch.

ADDED SECURITY AND LOADPROTECTIONRecognising the prime objective ofload protection, the SR-2 offers anumber of special features. Forexample, the keypad can be lockedto prevent interference. For unitsequipped with electric standby,diesel/electric auto-switching can beactivated to ensure continuoustemperature control by starting thediesel engine in the event of aninterruption in electricity supply. Inaddition, auto phase correctionautomatically prevents reverserotation of the electric motor.

The SR-2 is going to delight usersand set new standards in refrigerationunit control systems.

‘Celsius First’ choose R:COM for their national fleet.

DELIVERING INFORMATION A Bird’s Eye View of the growingprofessional partnership betweenCelsius First and Thermo King.

Celsius First, one of the UK’s leadingproviders of frozen and chilledlogistics, is rolling out theimplementation of Thermo King’sremote data downloading system,R:COM, to their national fleet. Theinstallation of the system, coordinatedby Cambridge-based Marshall ThermoKing, is now complete at each of thecompany’s UK four primarydistribution centres.

Formerly known as Frigoscandia,Celsius First has been using ThermoKing’s R:COM system since 1999 attheir site in Hams Hall, which isdedicated to their contract withUnilever Ice Cream and Frozen Foods.

TEMPERATURE MONITORINGGeoff Herring, General Manager atCelsius First, comments, “As ablue-chip company with very highprofile customers such as Unilever, temperature monitoring and duediligence have always been extremelyimportant to us.

He continues, “We needed to ensurewe had a complete temperaturerecord for every load we delivered, and were using “till-roll” printoutsfrom the data recorder, which weren’talways reliable. Thermo King’s R:COMsystem, which had just come onto themarket in 1999, was ideal – becauseit is completely automatic, it was amuch simpler and more reliablemethod for us to be sure we had the

data for every trailer, as soon as itarrived in the depot.”

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS“Using the R:COM system over thepast few years, we have discovered anumber of other significant benefits toour operation, particularly in terms ofasset management”, Geoff goes on tosay.

Paul Hammond, Traffic Manager atCelsius First’s Hams Hall depotcomments, “The data from R:COM isan excellent tool for our engineers, especially in terms of maintenancescheduling, giving us a far greaterdegree of control over locatingvehicles which are due for service.“

He adds, “It has also helped us withour driver training programme – by

looking at the data, we can check ifthe drivers are using the fridge unitcorrectly, and respondingappropriately to any alarm codes. Thishelps us to identify any trainingneeds.”

THE NATIONAL ROLL-OUTPhil Ward, National Fleet Manager, comments, “Centralised maintenanceplanning in a decentraliseddistribution operation can be anightmare. The biggest benefit Iforesee with the roll-out of R:COMand FleetWatch to the national fleet isin terms of maintenance schedulingand vehicle tracking. The informationwill save us a substantial amount oftime, and generally make our planningprocess much more effective.”

“In addition, it offers a real benefit toall our customers – the availability ofthe temperature data throughoutevery journey will also protect them

FleetWatch made it easy for Celsius First to integrate reports into their national computer network

Page 5: SEE THE DIFFERENCE - Thermo Kingthermoking.com/aboutus/tradepubs/ttc/ttc31/ttc31_e.pdf · AThermo King Publication. Issue No. 31 (March 2004) SEE THE DIFFERENCE THE NEW FROM THERMO

from any damage claims theircustomers might make.”Celsius First has a reputation withinthe industry for its leading-edgeapproach to providing flexiblelogistics solutions, tailored to theircustomers’ needs. Part of thecompany’s success has been theresult of a significant investment inIT, resulting in more efficientoperations and the ability to transmitall information electronically throughan integrated network.

Nick Jaciuk, National IT Manager, comments: “The integration ofThermo King’s FleetWatch softwareinto our network was very easy.FleetWatch enables us to producebespoke reports with the downloadeddata, and over the next few monthswe will develop these with themanagers at each depot to ensureeveryone has the information theyneed.”

He adds, “The ability to monitor thelocation of the vehicles remotely, andhave remote access to the datadownloaded from each refrigerationunit, will also be a huge advantage.”

Steve Williams, Key Accounts Managerat Thermo King adds, “The logistics

industry is relying more and more oninformation, and more importantly, access to that information by thosewho need it. The current project withCelsius First is a perfect case in point.

“Thermo King, as part of IngersollRand Climate Control TransportSolutions, is developing its productsand services to meet the needs ofthe industry as professional businesspartners.

“Products such as FleetWatch and ourinternet based satellite trackingsystem Trac-King go a long way tosupplying our clients’ business andhelping them be more successful inthe service they in turn offer theircustomers.”

Steve concludes, “We recognise thatteamwork, and ensuring that allrelevant parties are involved – suchas the IT department, will be the keyto the successful integration of ourproducts with our customers’systems, allowing us to fulfil theirneeds most effectively.”

5UK logistics company Celsius First is rolling out R:COM to their national fleet

How does R:COM work?

R:COM is a radio based system that automatically downloads datacollected by data capture systems such as DAS, to an office basedPC as soon as a vehicle enters the customer’s depot.

A small R:COM mobile (transmitter) is connected to the refrigerationunit’s data capture device. As soon as it comes into range, thiscommunicates with the “base station” transceiver, located on theoffice building, which is linked directly into the computer network. All data collected since the last download, including temperatureand alarm codes, is transferred. The system uses 2.4 GHz spreadspectrum radio technology, to ensure minimum interference fromother radio sources.

Once the data is downloaded onto the PC, Thermo King’s Windowsbased FleetWatch software processes it into useful information, allowing the user to automatically create reports showing theinformation most relevant to him, at timed intervals.

Greater payload capacity with V-700

Thermo King has truly well establisheditself in the world of transportrefrigeration, and the minds of customersand consumers. This was demonstratedat a recent exhibit at Legoland inDenmark, which clearly used a ThermoKing SB refrigeration unit on a modeltrailer made of Lego plastic bricks.

In another example in the UK, ThermoKing customer James T. Blakeman had aperfect Thermo King unit installed ontheir Corgi miniature tractor-trailercombinations, commissioned to celebratethe company’s 50th anniversary. James T.Blakeman has recently added a numberof Thermo King’s state-of-the artSPECTRUM SL multi-temperature trailerunits to their fleet.

DIRECT-DRIVE UNITS IDEAL FORFOOD DISTRIBUTION

SSG Managing Director Christof Egger isimpressed with Thermo King’s new V-700 MAX refrigeration units.

SSG Salat-Service GmbH is equipping itsentire fleet with units from ThermoKing’s new V-700 MAX series. Thecompany, based in Aufkirchen nearMunich, currently has seven 7.5-tonneMAN vehicles in use, three of which arealready equipped with V-700 units. SSGManaging Director Christof Egger says ofthe decision: “We’re extremely pleasedwith the refrigeration units, firstlybecause they offer excellent value formoney, and secondly because of thesupport offered by our dealer ThermoKing in Munich. The large number ofservice centres was another strongargument in the V-700’s favour. And lastbut not least the units are verylightweight.”

SSG’s vehicles are on the road six daysa week supplying fresh fruit andvegetables from Germany, France, Spainand Italy to customers includingcanteens, restaurants and hospitals.

“Our customers place great emphasison maintenance of the correct transporttemperature,” says Egger. “So we needequipment we can rely on.”

SSG’s fleet covers around 80,000 kmannually in an area encompassingIngolstadt, Augsburg, Landshut, Munich,Chiemsee and Ammersee. Theadvantage of the new V-700 MAX unitsis that the vehicle engine also powersthe refrigeration unit’s generator. Sincethe units don’t need their own dieselgenerator they are very light: “Includingall the bits and pieces a unit still onlyweighs about 200 kilograms,” Eggerconfirms.

Even without an engine of its own, theV-700 MAX has a very high coolingcapacity. On the road and at a setpointtemperature of OC, the capacity is 6,800watts. The units are equally suited tocooling and heating applications andare mains powered. The electric stand-by capacity is 80 to 90 percent of on-the-road capacity.

DATA TRANSFER

In the last issue of TTC, we consideredthe different options for Data Capture. In this issue, we look at the next step:how to transfer this data into yourmanagement system so that you canget maximum benefit from theinformation provided.

Once you have chosen your preferred“data capture” device (DAS, TranScan,Trac-King) you need to decide how youwish to transfer the data. There areseveral options available to userstoday, but before making a choice afew questions need to be answered:

Does your data capture device haveenough memory to store the requireddata and comply with the currentEuropean Legislation?

Do you need to produce temperatureprint outs for deliveries?

Do you want to transfer the data ontoyour PC network to share with otherusers?

Do you want to view your data on asecure website?

The current EU legislation for “quickfrozen products” EN12380, states thatyou must store your temperature datafor 12 months. Most data capturedevices have either 128K or 512Kmemory storage. If you are logging twoor more sensors at fifteen-minuteintervals you may not have twelvemonths storage capacity. To ensure thatyour stored data is not over writtenyou should down load your data fromthe capture device and store on afloppy disk, CD or PC hard drive.

Data Print Outs: You can print stored data from yourdata capture device by using anintegral printer (TranScan 2, Sentinel)or an external printer as used with theDAS or TranScan XL. These print outscan show temperatures from and to aspecific date. Other informationavailable is the reefer thermostat setpoint (DAS/Smart reefer data recordersonly), the truck or trailer number andcustomer name. Temperature deliveryprint outs are often requested byreceivers of perishable products.

Transferring data to a remotePC/Network:Transferring the stored data from yourdata capture device can be done in anumber of ways:

Serial cable: Most data capture deviceshave an external data port; this allowsyou to connect the device to a laptopcomputer or a PDA (personal digitalassistant) using a cable. You must havethe appropriate software installed onthe laptop or PDA (Wintrac/PocketWintrac or FleetWatch). Once you havecopied the data from the data capturedevice to the laptop or PDA, you cantransfer it to a disk, CD, the PC networkor print out.

Wireless Transfer: Transferring dataover the air is an option available tousers today; you can automate thetransfer of data from your data capturedevice to your PC network over the air.

Products such R:COM (RF 2.4GHz) canconnect to data capture devices (DAS,Smart Reefer, and TranScan) and copythe data direct to your PC network.Once the data is stored on theexternal hard drives it can betransferred to a disk, CD, the PCnetwork or printed out.

GSM/GPS: Another option available tousers is tracking the data capturedevice on the Internet. A GSM/GPSmodem (Trac-King) is connected todata capture devices (reefermicroprocessor, or DAS). From a remotePC connected to the internet you cango on line (www.trac-king.com), enter aunique password and view the locationof the vehicle plus the refrigerationunit’s mode of operation includingalarms, temperature and thermostat setpoint. For international transporterswho carry high value cargo (such aspharmaceutical products), this is a veryeffective means of asset management.

In the next issue we will outline thevarious options that turn the data intomeaningful information: Data management.

In September 2003 Thermo Kinglaunched a competition in the UK andIreland, looking for the longest-servingThermo King refrigeration unit in theUK or Ireland.

By a “cat’s whisker”, the prize in theUK went to leading producers of freshvegetables, Lincolnshire-basedMarshalls of Butterwick, with a 21 yearold SNWD mounted onto a Gray &Adams trailer. The trailer has been incontinuous use since its purchase over20 years ago, and is still being usedfor local deliveries.

“We have been using Thermo Kingtemperature control for our transportfleet for over two decades,” says JimThackray, Transport Manager atMarshalls. “We consider each purchaseto be a long-term investment, so wealways look for the best equipmentavailable on the market. The localMarshall Thermo King depot atSpalding takes care of all ourmaintenance requirements,” hecontinues, “and the fact that we arestill using every trailer in our fleet –from the 21 year old SNWD, a numberof SB units purchased in the 1980’sand 1990’s, right through to our latest

SL-400e – is a testament to the qualityof their service.

“We are delighted to receive this prizefrom Thermo King,” concludes Jim. “Welook forward to continuing ourrelationship for another twenty years!”

A close runner up was Oakley’sCatering Supplies, based in Powys,Wales, who entered a 21 year old MD-I50 truck refrigeration unit – particularlyappropriate as the winner wasannounced at the launch of the newlyupdated MD series! Mounted onto a7.5 tonne Leyland DAF, the vehicle is

still in daily use delivering cateringsupplies to pubs, hotels andrestaurants in Wales.
