School Budget

• Review the school division and school budget process.• Become a member of the school budget process/committee as the budget is

being prepared.• Work with the school principal and/or bookkeeper on the school budget.• Attend a budget hearing or workshop.• Analyze the budget and identify how specific budget allocations support the

school improvement strategic plan.• Interview a member of the Board of Supervisors/City Council related to how the

school division budget is determined by the Board/Council. (Virginia school divisions are fiscally dependent.)

• Review how the bookkeeper at an elementary, middle or high school manages internal funds (activity funds) and tracks purchase orders from central office allocations

Special Education Issues

• Observe/participate in IEP meetings.• Observe special education student disciplinary meeting.• Prepare a special education mediation or team building training for all faculty.• Prepare and present a professional development activity for updates on special

education issues and/or IDEIA.• Review the requirements for the current IDEIA and compile a list of

recommendations about what administrators need to know about IDEIA guidelines.

• Interview the administrator in charge of special education issues at central office, include questions related to 504 plans, Behavioral Intervention Plans, and discipline related to special education students

• Attend the school board meeting where the Special Education Plan of the school division is reviewed.

Human Resource Management

• Work with central office personnel and participate in recruitment planning.• Work with school personnel in the development of staffing needs.• Participate and/or lead some aspect of the process of interviewing for school

personnel.• Interview central office personnel about the human resources aspect of school

leadership such as handling applications, choosing persons for interviews, advertising positions, developing job descriptions, following legal requirements, etc.

• If policy permits, sit in on a teacher personnel issue.• Plan, or assist in planning, special programs staffing needs, such as for summer school

or after school programs.• Review the salary scales of the division including classified, professional and

administrative scales noting the starting salaries, different levels and percentages of increase each year.

• Analyze the division’s Reduction in Force (RIF) policy.
