You don’t need marketing data to tell you the craft beer segment is growing… and growing rapidly.

Simply walk into the beer aisle of practically any grocery store, convenience store, or pharmacy. You’ll find yourself face-to-face with a bewildering selection of beers. It’s a selection that was unimaginable just a few years ago.

The data, of course, do underscore what you’re seeing. According to the Brewer’s Association, craft was a $19.6 billion product niche in 2014, accounting for 19 percent of beer sales in the U.S. That niche grew by nearly 18 percent that year, eclipsing the 0.5 percent growth of the beer industry overall.

The number of craft breweries stood at just 284 in 1990. It now stands at nearly 4,000, with a sharp rise since 2009. The U.S. hasn’t had 4,000 breweries since the late 19th century. Back then, local brewing was the foundation of the beer segment.

A new breed of beer buyerAs we get into 2016, craft beer is where it’s at.

Helping fuel the segment’s growth is shifting consumer demand from a new breed of beer buyer: Millennials. They want local. They want variety. They want quality.

So, it follows that Millennials’ beer buying habits are evolving to be quite different than those of their parents. They walk through the beer aisle expecting a lot of options. And, they’re willing—even eager—to experiment, rather than sticking to a single brand.

Pushing the envelope with label designA 2010 study by MarketForce, showed that consumers are more likely to buy a product that “catches their eye” on the store shelf. This factor outweighs promotions, coupons, product recommendations, and advertisements.

This phenomenon, the increasingly crowded retail space, and evolving consumer expectations, all present a challenge and an opportunity to the craft brewer: How to make a beer stand out, get noticed, and get chosen.

Commercially successful craft brewers have realized that, when it comes to driving sales, what’s on the bottle is as important as what’s in the bottle. They’re tapping (no pun intended) into a bit of psychology as old as humanity itself, using storytelling to give their brews a unique identity. And they’re focusing on labels, asking their graphic designers to push the artwork and design envelope with color, imagery, cuts (shape of the label itself), and even textures.

Many of these designs are a far, far cry from the comfortable and familiar logos that have adorned mass-market cans and bottles for upwards of a century.

The eyes don’t lieThat focus on artwork and design does have a proven impact.

Avery Dennison recently worked with the Clemson University CUshop™ Consumer Experience Laboratory to look at the shelf impact of craft beer labels in a simulated retail environment. The result? Labels definitely matter.

The lab tested higher-end media and facestocks like metallized film, wood veneer, and clear film. It found that these were more effective—sometimes far more effective—at getting and holding the test subjects’ attention than media typically associated with standard, cut and stack technology.

Beers with the higher-end label materials were also likely to be perceived as more expensive than those with paper labels. (For detailed results, see the study’s whitepaper at label.averydennison.com.)

The benefits of pressure-sensitive labelsThe Avery Dennison Craft Beer portfolio is designed to help converters take advantage of these dynamics, and meet the needs of craft brewers and their label designers.

The portfolio offers unprecedented design freedom. Bottles can display any of 14 pressure-sensitive label constructions. Facestocks include metallized, wood veneer, clear, and more. They can be designed and cut in almost infinite ways.

Brewers and designers also enjoy a variety of technical benefits that are unavailable with traditional, cut and stack paper labels.

Pressure-sensitive labels are easier to apply, and easier to changeover. That’s a definite advantage for the brewer bottling multiple types of beer throughout the year. They stand up better—and simply look better—in moist environments like ice chests. And, they produce less waste than cut and stack.

They also typically offer a lower total applied cost, once labor, equipment, operations, and other facets of the packaging process are factored. Interestingly, some mass-market brewers are converting away from cut and stack because they recognize the total applied cost model.

Meeting craft brewers’ needs“We recommend converters just be really proactive with craft brewers,” said Jeff Greenlief, Avery Dennison craft beer product and business development manager. “And, we provide the portfolio and technical support to help you do it. There’s really no reason to wait for the brewer and designer to come to you.”

The craft brew segment is an especially attractive opportunity for converters with digital presses, who can more cost-effectively do the smaller print runs commonly required.

1. Dedicate sales calls to craft brewers

“It’s critical for converters to reach brewers before they’ve made a fiduciary commitment for labeling equipment,” said Jeff. “There’s a healthy used-equipment market, partly because some failed brewers have burdened themselves with costly, cut and stack labeling overhead. Today’s brewers have more flexible and cost-effective choices.”

2. Be a champion for pressure-sensitive labels

Get to know what products are available and how they can be used in brewery applications. Understand both the design and technical benefits to help you effectively pitch them to brewers and designers. A prototype roll offers an opportunity to vet a concept or test converting a standard or unique label construction with your customer. You get a single 1,000-foot roll you can run on your press at whatever width you need to test printing or die-cutting, and your customer gets a tangible example they can touch and feel. That’s far better than a sample sheet, and more indicative of the final product.

Moving at the speed of businessThis program moves as quickly as your business does. A member of the Avery Dennison ADvantage: Technical Excellence team can respond to your inquiry within 24 hours, telling you if the idea is viable. If the solution is compatible with the prototyping process, we’ll recommend an approach and guarantee it will be shipped in seven days, and at a standard lot charge. One key advantage of the prototyping program is it helps you reduce your initial quantities, which allows for greater efficiency and value for testing and trial runs.

Prototyping can move between various phases. Let’s say you have an application with a specific facestock you want to use, but want to try a different liner or adhesive. Durable goods, automotive and industrial labeling is a large, encompassing segment. From labels for circuit boards and tools, to labels for tires and drums, the opportunities for growth are limitless.

That said, these applications are not ordinary, and in many instances require technically superior, specific constructions that perform in extreme environments. An integral component in the success and endurance of a durable goods label is its adhesive.

Simplifying the adhesive selection processThe Avery Dennison durable adhesive offering is built on a core of four products, effective in a majority of industrial, automotive and household applications. They use three types of adhesive technology: acrylic emulsions, solvent acrylics, and a patented rubber/acrylic hybrid.

The “core four” includes:

> S8001—An emulsion-based product that’s economical, yet high-performing on a wide range of surfaces, and in a wide range of environments.

> S8015—A solvent-based product that’s high performing on many difficult-to-label surfaces, like varnished substrates.

> S8025—A solvent-based product offering high performance for rough surfaces, long-term outdoor exposure, and for small diameters.

> S8049—A proprietary rubber/acrylic hybrid product, S8049 is well-suited for use in applications where labels must adhere to oily, rough surfaces. The adhesive offers high repositionability allowing for labels to be moved without damage to the facestock if applied incorrectly

-this is dependent on substrate characteristics. On the converting side, the adhesive allows presses to operate at greater line speeds with less waste. “It simply performs at a very high level in difficult environments and on press,” said Ajay Desai, technical marketing manager.

Wide Range of Material with Proven Performance Seeking a reliable solution for labeling industrial drums carrying critical chemicals? The Avery Dennison Select Solutions™ Drum portfolio offers an impressive track record of proven performance on a broad range of container sizes and surfaces.

Whether for painted steel or molded polyethylene drums, our film and heavyweight paper facestocks have been chosen for their ability to withstand harsh environments and outdoor exposures. In fact, all our drum portfolio facestocks have passed BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 Marine Immersion label testing, including a three-month exposure to saltwater, as part of International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG certification).

Our drum portfolio facestocks are combined with our best-in-class adhesives to offer needed versatility. Because these labels are typically hand-applied, drum adhesives must be repositionable to amend misapplied or misaligned label applications. The adhesive must also wet-out quickly to become permanent, remaining highly durable over a drum’s long-term exposure to the elements

Easing the BS 5609 Certification ProcessTwo certifications are important to converters who are helping clients adhere to GHS standards: BS 5609 Section 2 and 3. Section 2 certification deals with the actual label materials. Our Drum Portfolio features BS 5609 Section 2-certified facestock, liners and adhesives. Meanwhile, various combinations of printers, ribbons and inks must be certified under BS 5609 Section 3. To make this process easier for converters and end users, Avery Dennison now offers both BS 5609 Section 2 and 3 certification.

Our certification library. It contains a multitude of certified materials, printers, ribbons and ink combinations. The matrix portfolio matrix allows converters and chemical end users to check various printing methods and descriptions at a glance.

In addition to the certification library, we have established a certification lab, which is audited by the universally respected Underwriters Laboratory, helps you alleviate major bottlenecks for BS 5609 testing, with long waits and high prices. Typical testing can range from $2,000 to $4,000, and can take months to complete. But the Avery Dennison testing lab can quickly certify for Section 2 and Section 3, at no cost to you.

If you are already certified under Section 2, Section 3 certification can typically be achieved in under a month. But if you need both certifications, we can facilitate them concurrently, thus helping you achieve certification within two to three month

DissolvablesWhen labels are removed from food containers before being washed, there’s a good chance adhesive residue will be left on the container. Bacteria can grow on this residue, creating the possibility of cross-contamination. Avery Dennison dissolvable label materials are virtually residue-free, disintegrating in seconds when immersed in water. No residue means no bacteria growth. Because dissolvable labels don’t need to be removed, they save on clean up time, making it possible for employees to spend more time on other tasks.

Natural Kraft Paper Portfolio Adhesives

• Sox2: An emulsion acrylic adhesive that adheres well to textile and apparel surfaces with texture and offers excellent converting characteristics. Now available in our west coast distribution center for faster west coast service.

• S246: A permanent, hot melt rubber adhesive with high initial tack. An excellent, general-purpose choice (not recommended for apparel labeling).

“Label-on-label” constructions speed handling, save cost.Piggyback labels are multi-layer constructions featuring one self-adhesive label on top of another. The top label is removable and can be reapplied elsewhere, while the bottom label is stationary, remaining affixed to the original surface. Dynamic and versatile, piggyback labels can be created in constructions that adhere to paper, plastics, cardboard and metals. Reclose labels are designed for the easy opening and/or multiple open-close cycling of flexible packaging. They provide an economical method of repeated pack sealing – combined with branding – in one label.

• Wet applications, such as wet wipes, include water, scents, oils and chemicals within the saturating fluid that come in direct contact with the adhesive. Wet applications can also include packages containing food (such as deli meats), water or oils.

• Dry applications include such products has paper tissues or food, items like rice, pasta or coffee.

Removable Adhesives for Paper Components

UR3

Ultra-removable adhesive featuring a consistent level of adhesion, as well as long term removability and repositionability across a wide variety of substrates (should be tested for suitability on curved surfaces). Fasson® UR3 remains removable for months with “peel and reseal” characteristics that provide consistent, secure positioning and clean removability. An excellent choice for office product and variable information applications.

R423 Removable adhesive featuring long term removability, and excellent diecutting and stripping characteristics. Particularly suited for wallpaper promotional labels and shelf marking.

R128General-purpose, removable rubber-based adhesive with high initial tack, internal strength and stable adhesion. R128 is recommended where clean removability is of primary importance. Adhesive can be used on a variety of substrates including glass, metal, plastic and others.

R5195General purpose removable adhesive featuring moderate initial tack and minimal adhesion build over time. Its consistent level of adhesion and long term removability make it suitable for applications on substrates such as glass and plastics. Proven successful for shelf marking and tote marking used in logistical tracking.

Avery Dennison’s Select Solutions Transfer Tape portfolio consists of pressure-sensitive adhesives of different coat weights and strengths pre-applied to liners, then covered with a special release liner. The release liner protects the adhesive until it is removed.

These general-purpose tapes add value in a variety of ways, helping converters solve a myriad of issues. Transfer tapes are suitable for many applications – and many application environments. Ideal for mounting, framing, bonding and laminating, Avery Dennison transfer tapes offer good conformability and adhesive wet-out.
