OATLANDS SENIORS – No SOOM points (June 5th) by Darryl Hearsch

A field of 74 seniors took to the tight fairways of a nicely presented Oatlands GC for the Oatlands Seniors. It was nice to see some familiar faces and all players commented how nice it was to play on a different course as just about all of us have been playing our home tracks over these past months.

Even though this senior event did not attract SOOM points which start in July, it did get a lot of players out of hibernation who relished the opportunity to compete again.

Oatlands is to be commended for holding the event when many clubs have found it too difficult to run their senior event during the Corona crisis.

The evergreen Mona Vale representative, Stefan Albinski took home the bacon with a 4 over par round of 74 to pip Ken Brewer on a countback for the Oatlands Cup. Ken would be ruing his finish today as tee to green his game was immaculate but the putter decided to go awol on the last 4 holes and with a countback of 42 on the back nine, Stefan easily won the countback. Third place went to Richard Wallace from Avondale with 75 on a countback from local player Terry Park. Rounding out the top 5 was Doug Cullam from Monash with 76 on a countback from local gun, Rowan Easterbrook.

In the nett event, local player John Muggleton won with a fine 68 nett from another local Kim Hugh with 70 nett.

With many senior events in June now cancelled, our next event will be Carnarvon in mid July which will be our first SOOM point scoring event since Corona started. Hope to see a strong field at Carnarvon.

PS. It was great to see one of our legends in Denis Dale play today and after his effort today we hope to see him many more times this year. His game is still there!

Ken’s recommendations for May: Again with one event to report on this month and none for June we are going to continue the book reviews. This month I have selected from my collection three books with a biographic tilt however focused on the start of professional golf and tour golf in the US. Tommy’s Honour – Kevin Cook (2007) Jack Grout – Dick Grout (2012) American Triumvirate – James Dodson (2012) Tommy’s Honour is more than the story of Tom Morris and his son Tommy. It is the story of how professional golf began, it is the story of how St. Andrew’s evolved into the course we know today, it is the story of how The Open started. From my collection of golf books this is my favourite. If you have the opportunity to travel to Scotland (post COVID) read this book first. Go to Prestwick and have lunch in the Red Lion amongst the golfing memorabilia feeling (or drinking) the sprits of the men who started The Open, then play the course with all of it’s 19th century quirks. When you are at St. Andrews this book will make you see both the course and town in a new light. Available at Amazon and Kindle, in addition it has been made into a movie. Jack Grout – A Legacy in Golf walks you through the like of Jack Grout, written by his son Dick. As you will be aware Grout was the lifelong teacher of Nicklaus, however this is only part of his story. Jack Grout played and travelled on tour with the likes of Hogan, Picard and Demaret during the 1930’s and 40’s, which were the formative years of what we call the PGA Tour. Life was very different, no private jets or courtesy cars just cheap motels and long drives, understand the issues faced by the pioneers. Also he worked with other pro’s including Floyd, Wadkins and David Graham. This is a book for people who love Golf, it is well written telling the tale of a remarkable and modest man. Available at both Amazon and Kindle.

American Triumvirate is written by the prolific golf writer James Dodson. In 1912 three American players were born who would dominate golf until the mid 1950’s. They were Sam Snead, Bryon Nelson and Ben Hogan winners of a combined 21 majors. The book dig’s into many parts of each player’s life including, tour life during the Great Depression, struggles Hogan had winning, Snead’s disasters at the U.S. Open and Nelson’s winning streak. Post Bobby Jones and the Depression golf was losing popularity as a game and spectator sport these three players were the start of it’s revival. Worthy of your time, you will enjoy Dodson’s writing style and the triumph over adversity of each player. Available on Amazon.

Darryl’s recommendations for May: Tour Mentality: Inside the mind of a tour pro is written by Nick O’Hern and more about the mental toughness a tour player must possess. Gary Player describes Nick “as a grinder of sorts who isn’t the most talented physically but instead extracts ever ounce of golfing ability to shoot the lowest score possible. He thinks his way around a golf course rather than overpowers it.” This is what you will find in his book, a simple mental guide to the methods Nick used to become a world class player. Nick is one of the very few that can say he beat Tiger twice in match play events. I found the stories in the book entertaining and many of his methods are simple and can be easily be used in your next game of golf. I think you will read this book many times over. The book is available from Amazon and Booktopia.

If you would like to do your own book review that you would like to share and include in our next newsletter please pass it onto Emmanuel at Golf NSW.

With a lot of us working or isolating at home, you can only do so many odd jobs and painting around the house.

Some fabulous videos have been uploaded to you tube for us to see and admire. Remember that just about all of

these videos can be cast on most smart TV’s.

30 by 30 John Daly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_stPITJGxA A talented golfer but his life was like a train wreck. An interesting interview about how his career and life went. Really interesting listen.

The show is called Indepth with Graeme Bessinger- he interviews sports people and he is a talented interviewer http://grahambensinger.com/ Golfers in the archive are Arnie, Player, Nicklaus, Norman and the caddie Steve Williams. Highly recommended You need to scroll down to watch all the clips on each person about 10 to 12 clips per interview about 5 mins long each one http://grahambensinger.com/index.php/episode-guide-2/episode-archive-2/arnold-palmer/ http://grahambensinger.com/index.php/episode-guide-2/episode-archive-2/greg-norman/ http://grahambensinger.com/index.php/episode-guide-2/episode-archive-2/jack-nicklaus/ http://grahambensinger.com/index.php/episode-guide-2/episode-archive-2/john-mcenroe/ http://grahambensinger.com/index.php/episode-guide-2/episode-archive-2/john-daly/ http://grahambensinger.com/index.php/episode-guide-2/episode-archive-2/gary-player/ http://grahambensinger.com/index.php/episode-guide-2/episode-archive-2/episode-steve-williams/

This clip was passed onto me by Ken Brown from SA and features Ballesteros and Trevino playing Aoki and Faldo in a one club challenge at St Andrews. If you have not watched it before they hit some amazing shots with the one club, especially Ballesteros. The clip is only short and they all are using a 5 iron. https://youtu.be/Nlh5E9SVxiE

AUSOOM Facebook Group

I run the AUSOOM Facebook group which was originally started as an addition to the AUSOOM website but it only covered the Australian senior ranking events, while the website covers all over Australia and some other events like the NZ seniors and British seniors.

We have over 254 members in the facebook group and there are some nice discussions going on there about courses open or shut etc as well as some fun activities keeping us connected such as your best moment in golf, your dream four etc. Also the facebook group has enabled many of us to communicate rapidly about events, sharing accommodation, recommendations etc so it serves a purpose that the static website cannot do.

So now is the time to join this private group and stay connected with all the senior group. So google AUSOOM Facebook group and request to join and then I will ok your entry and then you are in.

A lot of us spend a lot of time using technology like Flightscope etc working on our long game yet half of our game is putting of which we are now starting to see technology like Sam putter lab and now a new device, CAPTO coming into putting. CAPTO is a putting analysis device that is similar to Sam putter Lab. Sam putter lab is mostly used indoors whereas the Capto analysis is done on the putting green. CAPTO is high accuracy sensor and associated software that can run in all your devices. It is easy to use, highly accurate. It's cutting edge technology giving detailed accurate and reliable putting parameters for complete analysis. CAPTO consists of a sensor which is attached and calibrated to your putter and all the information is gathered and analysed on many mobile platforms. CAPTO provides a huge amount of data while on the green which needs to be analysed by a professional. So I took my first 1 hour CAPTO putting lesson at Manly with Earl Mc Glinn who is one of our teaching pro. Earl explained a lot of the data which revealed some errors in my stroke and then we looked at how to correct these errors with drills. I knew at times my putting stroke tends to push my putting face to the right of my line during impact. CAPTO revealed this as well as showed I tend to decelerate at times through impact losing energy and then tend to hit the putts off centre. It also showed errors in my tempo. As a result of the lesson I now work on keeping my putter on plane plus a slight grip change and working with a metronome to improve my tempo. As well as a copy of the data Earl also made multiple videos before and after that I can always access on my phone. This has to be the best 1 hour lesson I have ever had and I cannot wait to put this into practice. I will then in a months time do another lesson with Earl and CAPTO to see the improvement I have made and to look at further tweaks. Many pros like Justin Rose use this device but for an amateur the cost of buying your own and then interpreting the data is best left to the experts. Thoroughly recommended, and well worth the $120, thanks Earl.
