Two residents of NeedhamHousing have decided to jointhe “Are You Ok” program. In
doing so, they will receive a call from“Cheryl” on days that they wish. Theycan have a call any day and at whatevertime they wish between 8 a.m. andnoon. This program is free andoperates seven days a week.
Cheryl, who is an employee of theNorfolk County Sherriff’s office, consented to an interview recently inorder to relay some of the amazingrescues she has been able tofacilitate. Here are some of the
wonderful outcomes:
Her first week on the job ten yearsago, Cheryl received a call from agentleman who was wheelchair bound. He was expecting a home healthworker and needed help getting dressedso “she wouldn’t see me looking sodisheveled”. Cheryl was able to get amale volunteer from the Council onAging who helped the gentlemanbecome presentable for his visitingnurse.
When a woman didn’t answerCheryl’s regular call, she called thedaughter, who raced to her mother’s
apartment to find her in the bathroomhaving a major stroke. Cheryl receiveda very grateful note from the daughterwho was able to provide the necessaryhelp for her mother.
An elderly woman kept getting thewrong number when she tried to getthe oil company. When Cheryl calledat her regular time, the woman told herof the problem. Knowing that thewoman’s sons were both away, Cheryltook action and got heat restored to thewoman’s apartment.
These vignettes show that over andabove the basic phone call about
wellness, there can be that extra helpthat is sometimes a lifesaver.Membership is free and can bediscontinued at any time. However,no one quits. The friendly reassurancethat someone is available to check onyou becomes part of a member’s day.Even with relatives nearby and Life-Line backup, that voice on thetelephone can’t be duplicated, and it’sfree.
To join, call Marie Dimonis at 781-751-3505 or Cheryl at 866-900-7865.For more information call Bill Dugan,TRIAD president at 781-449-0275.

More baby boomers and olderadults are taking a proactiveapproach to heart health.
Living a heart-healthy lifestyle in yourgolden years and dealing with any typeof diagnosis head-on is the smart wayto keep your heart pumping strong formany years to come. Following thesefive easy steps can help you takecontrol.
1. Exercise your heart by staying
active. Increasing your heart ratethrough daily exercise can help keepyour heart healthy and help you livelonger. Good heart-healthy activitiesinclude walking, swimming andbicycling. Stay motivated by exercisingwith a friend.
2. Eat heart-healthy foods. Freshfruits and vegetables are fantastic forheart health - make it your goal to eata variety of colors every day. Wholegrains and fish rich in omega-3 fatty
acids are good choices also.
3. Consult your doctor about heart-healthy supplements. As we age, sometimes our bodies can’t absorbvitamins and minerals as well as whenwe were younger. Many people takevitamin D and a low-dose aspirin dailyonce they hit their 50s or 60s. Ask yourdoctor for recommendations.
4. Schedule your annual physical. An annual physical is the cornerstoneof preventative care. At yourappointment, make sure you get yourblood pressure and cholesterolchecked. Have your doctor explainwhat those numbers mean for you.
5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. No matter what, when it comes to thehealth of your heart, ask questions. Ifyou are diagnosed with a slow
heartbeat and need a pacemaker, talkwith your doctor about your optionsand determine if a pacemaker that isapproved for use in an MRI may beright for you.
Marilyn Rose of Richardson, Texas, ate healthy, exercised regularly andscheduled yearly physicals, but at age80 she frequently felt tired and short ofbreath. Rose was scheduled for anechocardiogram, a heart test that allowsthe doctor to see the movement of theheart, and it was then that she learnedshe had a condition called bradycardia,or a slow heartbeat. Rose needed apacemaker to help her live a full life, but she learned that historically, pacemakers have not been approved

The majority of Americanssupport continuing the SocialSecurity program, even if they
are decades away from drawingbenefits, a 2010 survey by AARPfound. Nevertheless, with theprogram’s future financial viability anongoing subject of political debate, many people may undervalue the roleSocial Security can play in theirretirement planning.
“For years, financial servicescompanies have downplayed the roleof Social Security in bolsteringfinancial security in retirement,” writesJames Mahaney, vice president ofStrategic Initiatives for Prudential, inthe white paper “Innovative Strategiesto Help Maximize Social SecurityBenefits.” “However, considering theincreased financial risks retirees nowshoulder, the tax preferences that SocialSecurity receives, and the incomeoptions that Social Security now offers,a strong argument can be made thatSocial Security should play a greaterrole in a retiree’s financial planning.”
Each day, 10,000 Americans reachretirement age. With people livinglonger and fewer companies offeringpensions, saving for retirement hasbecome even more important fortoday’s workers. Yet, retirementsavings rates remain low.
Social Security offers “regularincome that is guaranteed to increaseover time and continue for as long asyou live,” Mahaney writes. “No other(retirement) vehicle can match thecombination of inflation-fightingincreases, longevity protection, investment risk elimination, andspousal coverage that Social Securitycan (offer).”
With Social Security accounting forapproximately 40 percent of incomefor the average retiree, according tothe Employee Benefit ResearchInstitute, it makes sense to take steps tomaximize potential Social Securitybenefits, Mahaney advises.
While most Americans realize theyaccrue Social Security benefitsthroughout their careers, many may beunaware that they can influence theamount they will receive uponretirement. Retirees can help maximizetheir Social Security benefits byavoiding four costly - and common -mistakes:
*Don’t underestimate the realvalue of Social Security.
* Don’t rush to collect SocialSecurity - and then regret thereduced benefits for the rest of yourlife.
* Don’t overlook the various ways
married couples canintegrate theirbenefits.
* Don’t getblindsided by taxes.
Claiming benefits assoon as they’re eligibleis a common mistakethat can cost retireestens of thousands of dollars over theirlifetime. Although most everyonebecomes eligible for benefits at age 62,delaying benefits until you reach FullRetirement Age (which variesdepending on your birth year) or latermay help ensure you receive themaximum amount you qualify for.
“Retirees often apply for SocialSecurity benefits early,” Mahaneywrites. “Most certainly didn’t stop tothink that ... they could have potentiallydoubled their initial payments if onlythey had waited until age 70.”
Another common mistake isforgetting that when you retire, theincome received from IRAwithdrawals often causes SocialSecurity benefits to become taxed aswell. Since Social Security income istaxed differently than IRA income, youcan often reduce your taxes bychoosing higher Social Securityincome and lower IRA withdrawals.
It’s never too early - or too late - toplan for retirement, experts agree. Talkto your financial advisor about yourretirement strategy and how SocialSecurity fits into it. You can also readthe Prudential white paper, “InnovativeStrategies to Help Maximize SocialSecurity Benefits,” online atwww.Prudential.com.
“It’s all about choices,” Mahaneyconcludes. “Those who understandhow to evaluate their choices andoptimize their decisions will be theones to enjoy a more secure retirement.A larger amount of Social Securitywithin a retirement income strategymay, indeed, be the golden ticket tothe golden years.”

in the U.S. for use with MRIs. Shewas concerned - she knew at her agethe likelihood that she might need anMRI at some point was high.
After talking with her doctor andasking plenty of questions, Roselearned that the FDA had approved thefirst pacemaker that was fit for use inthe MRI environment. Today, aftergetting her pacemaker, she’s feelinggreat and is back to her regular life, swimming, knitting and playing withher five grandkids. Her friends call herthe “Energizer bunny,” and with herpacemaker she says she feels betterthan she did before. For Rose, askingthe right questions made a life-changing difference.
Rose’s story is just one example ofhow the decisions you make today canimpact your health tomorrow. She isnow part of an educational campaigncalled “Join the Pace Makers,” becauseshe wants to share her experience andhelp inform others about heart healthand their options when it comes tochoosing a pacemaker.
Whether you want to take on yourgolden years with a heart-healthy outlook,or you are a child of aging parents andyou want them to live a long, full life, these tips can help you reach your goals. If you know someone who needs apacemaker, you have an opportunity tomake a difference.
