The Components of Senior Seminar

Grading Structure The grading structure for Senior Seminar is outlined in

the Senior Seminar Handbook and lists all assignments

and due dates for the entire year. Grades are posted at

quarters and are cumulative for the entire year.

Parent Communication Parental support is vital in maintaining a healthy

relationship between teacher and parent. Attached to the

New Albany Plain Local School’s website is a “Classroom

Portal” that allows you to take a ‘look’ inside each

teacher’s class. By logging onto www.napls.us and

clicking on Classroom Portal/High School/Senior Seminar,

you can see announcements as they are posted. We

encourage you to use this Classroom Portal for all of your

student’s classes.

Senior Seminar Options In an effort to provide options for our ever-growing

senior class, New Albany Plain Local Schools offers the

following options, in addition to the traditional Senior

Seminar curriculum offered during the regular school year:

Senior Seminar Summer Institute (Blended or Traditional).

Designed as a summer school course, the entire curriculum for

Senior Seminar must be executed & completed during the

summer months. Regular class times will be scheduled and

attendance is mandatory. Tuition is required.

Summer Start. The Summer Start program is designed for

the student that wishes to start and possibly complete his/her

project during the summer. The remainder of the course work

will be completed during the academic year. Pre-requisites for

the Summer Start option must be completed before the end of

the junior year to ensure a seamless transition in the fall of the

students’ senior year. Students choosing to start in the

summer have the option of presenting in December or April.

The student must commit to their decision of presentation time

at the end of their junior year.

Honors vs. Regular Senior Seminar

Students may opt to complete Senior Seminar as an honors

course. Additional course requirements are noted in the

handbook. Honors students will receive a 1.1 GPA weighting.

THE SENIOR PROJECT

ORAL PRESENTATION The oral presentation component of the Senior Seminar

Project is intended to communicate the essence of the

Project. Information conveyed should demonstrate

accurately the important details of the process as well as

conclusions reached. Students will answer questions

posed to them from a panel of judges comprised of the

Senior Team members.

Oral presentations will be made before an audience

comprised of student peers, faculty, administration and

community and business members. It is strongly

suggested that each student arrange for an “authentic

audience” for his/her presentation consisting of

professionals in the field, or perhaps a subject-related

class. If selected as a finalist, a second oral presentation

will be made during the Jeffrey C. Stuart Exhibition of

Finalists before both school and community personnel.

Specifics of each portion of the Senior Project as well

as grading rubrics can be found in the Senior Seminar

Project Handbook located on the Senior Seminar Portal

and also is issued to each senior student. If you desire

more information on the Senior Project, you may contact

Lori Cheney, Senior Team Leader, at [email protected].

DISTINGUISHED HONOR AWARD Some students may opt to apply for the “Distinguished

Honor” award for their Senior Project. The

“Distinguished Honor” award is reserved for those student

projects that exceed the requirements set forth in the

Senior Project component.

Students wishing to apply for the “Distinguished

Honor” award should submit a formal request, in writing

to his/her primary advisor. Please check the Classroom

Portal for a submission deadline. Please see the Senior

Seminar Handbook for additional information.

TOPIC

Because the Senior Project is both time and work

intensive, the project topic should reflect a genuine interest

of the student. Consideration should be given to student

activities, curiosities and/or strengths.

The Senior Team is available to conference with each

student to discuss topics for consideration or make

suggestions for a topic refinement. An appointment for

such a conference may be made through the Senior Project

Coordinator, Mrs. Karen Morlan.

PROJECT PROPOSAL

For final approval of the project, the student must

submit a Project Proposal. The Project Proposal is

intended to explain to the Senior Seminar Faculty the

project idea and should be written in narrative form.

Upon submission of a Project Proposal, the Senior

Seminar Faculty will review the project choice and

respond. If the Project Proposal is returned unapproved,

the Senior Seminar Faculty will make suggestions for

refinement and/or reconsideration. A revised Project

Proposal must then be submitted.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

To help students organize and streamline their efforts

and to systematically complete their project in a timely

manner, the Project Management component is part of the

Senior Seminar curriculum from start to finish. This

component includes conferencing and the creation of task

lists, timelines, and resource lists for each quarter.

ADVISORS

Students will have one, two, or possibly three advisors

while working on the Senior Project. Each student will be

assigned one of the Senior Seminar Faculty as a primary

advisor; in addition, a co-faculty advisor and/or on-site

advisor may be warranted. Individual projects will dictate

the number of advisors needed. In order to ensure

adequate communication and to establish a network of

support for the student, a consent form signed by all

advisors involved, the senior student and the student’s

parents must be submitted.

PROJECT PORTFOLIO

To provide an avenue for students to share their

completed work in an organized, orderly fashion, a

portfolio of required and optional materials will be

generated. This portfolio should reflect a clear sense of

the sequence of the developmental process required for

successful completion of the Senior Project and should

contain additional items such as pictures, receipts,

catalogs, correspondence, notes, and any other item that

helps define the completed project.

PRODUCT/INTERNSHIP The Senior Project can be either an eighty hour internship

or a project which requires the student to produce some

product that applies the knowledge gained during the research

phase. The student, with direction and guidance from the

advisor(s), must complete this product. (Note: An 80-hour

internship does not require a product.)

Some products are tangible such as a refurbished antique

tractor, a children’s book, a biome, or a memorial track meet.

Other projects are less tangible. These products are usually

service-oriented like a peer mediation program, the Eagle

Pride program, radio broadcasting, or civic virtue projects.

RESEARCH COMPONENT As a part of the Senior Seminar curriculum, each student is

to conduct a formal research component linked to his/her

project. This component will allow each student to do a

further in-depth study/research of a portion of the topic

related to the students’ project. The research component will

consist of a maximum of three literature reviews and two

interview reviews. The purpose of the project driven research

is to broaden, focus, and expand knowledge and

understanding of the project, while providing students with

the opportunity to get first hand perspectives from

professionals in their field of study. This research is meant to

be varied, rich and meaningful to the student’s project. A

minimum of twenty hours will be dedicated to research.

Service Learning

Advisor - Mr. McNichols (F-201)

Guidelines, pre-approved opportunities, x2VOL sign in page, and directions for how to submit service hours are all located

on the service-learning portal page: https://www.napls.us/Page/3298

Service Learning is a New Albany Board of Education graduation requirement where students volunteer some time

(minimum 25 hours) and effort to benefit the school, a community or its institutions in a meaningful way. These hours are

counted for service completed during high school. Hours may begin the day after school is out for the eighth grade year for

opportunities that are approved prior to summer break.

4 Steps to Success for Completing Service Learning

1. READ THE SERVICE LEARNING GUIDELINES

2. GET OPPORTUNITY APPROVED

There are two types of opportunities available for Service Learning:

o Those on the pre-approved list (see the service learning portal). These activities may be completed immediately

by contacting the person indicated at that opportunity

o Those that you know about that you need to get approved by Mr. McNichols, a House dean, or a Senior Seminar

Advisor prior to completing any service learning hours. COMPLETING ANY HOURS WITHOUT APPROVAL

WILL RESULT IN YOUR HOURS NOT BEING ACCEPTED.

3. DOCUMENT HOURS: Hours accumulated for service learning credit must be submitted by the student and verified by

the agency or organization

4. SUBMIT HOUR VERIFICATION: Students need to submit hours online with the student’s x2VOL log in.

SENIOR SEMINAR SUMMER INSTITUTE

ATTENDANCE POLICY Because of the compressed curriculum taught in Senior Seminar Summer Institute, it is expected that all students attend all

scheduled class days for the Senior Seminar Summer Institute (SSSI). There are rare occasions where unforeseen or

extenuating circumstances will cause a student to miss a scheduled class day. If an unforeseen/extenuating circumstance

(e.g., previously planned vacation/illness)* would present itself and one (1) day of absence is needed, there is a built-in “make

up day” in the schedule that the absent student must attend to make up his/her missed class time. Class dates are listed on

the back of this form to aid in confirming the student’s availability to attend every scheduled class.

If an unforeseen/extenuating circumstance would present itself that would cause the student to miss two (2) days of class, the

student will be automatically transferred out of SSSI and into the Summer Start program. The Summer Start program

will allow the student to complete his/her Senior Seminar project hours during the summer; however, it will also require

regular attendance to Senior Seminar during the academic year along with the completion of the remainder of graded

components of the Senior Seminar curriculum, not completed in SSSI.

If it becomes necessary to transfer from SSSI to Summer Start for any reason (including two absences), you will be assigned a

NAHS Primary Advisor that is a member of the Senior Team that teaches a Summer Start section of students and it will be

the students' responsibility to make contact with that Primary Advisor to ensure all requirements are met to complete your

project hours over the summer. Opportunity will be given in December, near the end of the first semester, to formally

present your Senior Seminar project, assuming all curriculum requirements have been met. Tuition for SSSI is non-

refundable.

If you need any further clarification on these requirements to make certain of mutual understanding, please contact a Senior

Seminar Summer Institute instructor. Otherwise, your signature below will indicate your understanding of the attendance

policy for Senior Seminar Summer Institute. Your signature below also indicates that you understand the tuition for the

Summer Institute is non-refundable.

This signed form, along with an approved proposal and tuition payment, must be submitted before you will be formally

registered for the Senior Seminar Summer Institute.

If a scheduled class day is going to be missed due to pre-arranged obligations, it is the students' responsibility

to notify the instructor prior to the start of SSSI, and complete all work prior to the date of absence.

Regarding an absence due to an emergency (e.g., sudden illness), documented evidence (physician’s note) is

required and work missed will be coordinated with the SSSI instructor.

SENIOR SEMINAR SUMMER INSTITUTE - BLENDED

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Because of the compressed curriculum taught in Senior Seminar Summer Institute BLENDED, it is expected that

all students attend all scheduled class days for the Senior Seminar Summer Institute (SSSI). There are

absolutely no exceptions to this expectation since we only have six scheduled class days in the summer.

Students are required to attend every scheduled class session! The class dates are listed on the back of this form

to aid in confirming the student’s availability to attend every scheduled class.

If an unforeseen/extenuating circumstance would present itself that would cause the student to miss one day of

class, the student will be automatically transferred out of SSSI-BLENDED and into the Summer Start

program. The Summer Start program will allow the student to complete his/her Senior Seminar project hours

during the summer; however, it will also require regular attendance to Senior Seminar during the academic year

along with the completion of the remainder of graded components of the Senior Seminar curriculum, not

If it becomes necessary to transfer from SSSI-BLENDED to Summer Start for any reason (including one absence),

you will be assigned a NAHS Primary Advisor that is a member of the Senior Team that teaches a Summer Start

section of students and it will be the students' responsibility to make contact with that Primary Advisor to ensure

all requirements are met to complete your project hours over the summer. Opportunity will be given in

you understand the attendance policy for Senior Seminar Summer Institute BLENDED. Your signature below also

indicates that you understand the tuition for the Summer Institute is non-refundable.
