Draw-wire sensors for dis-placement, position andlengthDraw-wire displacement and position sensorsare essentially electronic tape measures andmeasure the linear movement of acomponent by means of a wire made ofhighly-flexible stainless steal strands, which iswound onto a drum by a long-lifespring motor.

The measuring drum is axially coupled witha multi-turn potentiometer, an incrementalencoder, or an absolute encoder. With thedraw-wire principle a linear movement istransformed into a rotary movement andthen converted into a resistance change orinto countable increments.

Bimetallic thermometersThe temperature as a physical unitycannot be measured directly butonly upon a phenomenon relatedto temperature change, like thevolume or length expansion ofgases, liquids or solid materials.

When a metallic element issubmitted to temperature changes,its length varies.This physical property has beenused and developed to buildtemperature measuring devices.The bimetallic sensor is made oftwo coils twisted together, andwelded at their end.

InstrumentsMÜTECit starts with an idea

DuoTec-systems consist of thetransmitter (MTP200) and the 2-wiresupply unit (MSK200). They are theInterface between the system(sensors in the field) and the PCS orPLC. The system accepts practicallyall electrical standard signals(mA, mV, V) and temperaturesensors (Pt100, TC). Hazardous areaprotection to EExia (area 0) isavailable. Two-wire transmitters aresupplied directly by the supply unitto EExib (area 1) or EExia (area 0).The systems itself are not installedin an ex-area. Output signals such as4-20mA or 0-10VDC, 4 limit valuesand a maintenance accessory relayare available.

RTD Sensors (Pt-100)Platinum resistance thermometers arewell-known for their accurate and stableperformance. A Pt-100 detector has a value of100 Ohms at 0ºC and varies with a positivetemperature coefficient. Pt-100's are used inprocesses from -260ºC to +650ºC. The sensorsconsist of a single or duplex detector which isbuilt into a stainless steel sheath.The standardtolerance is according to DIN/IEC 751 Class Bor A, however, 1/3, 1/5 or 1/10 DIN Tolerancedetectors are also available. The 2-, 3- or4-wire Pt-100 detectors are the most populartypes, but we can also supply Pt-20, Pt-50,Pt-500 , Pt-1000 or Ni-100 versions.

Gas pressure thermometersThis thermometer uses the volume expansionof gases at temperature changes, inparticular the proportional gas expansion ofinert gases.

Safety due to Request Class 4(AK4) and IEC 61508 SIL2DuoTec Failsafe systems are TÜV-certifiedaccording to the “fundamental considerationsof security for MSR-protection systems” DIN19250 for request class 4 and it is conform toIEC61508 SIL2. RTD Sensors andThermocouples

RTD sensors and thermocouplesare used as electronic temperaturesensors. These temperature sensorsare suitable for use in industrialand laboratory temperature andprocess measurement.

ThermocouplesThermocouples essentially comprise a thermoelement (a junction of two specifieddissimilar metals) and an appropriate two wireextension lead. A thermocouple operates onthe basis of the junction located in the processproducing a small voltage which increaseswith temperature. It does so on a reasonablystable and repeatable basis.Thermocouple probes have a short responsetime and can be used (depending on theelement type) over a large temperature range(-40ºC to +1600ºC, or even as high as +2200ºCusing Tungsten/Rhenium elements).The materials are made according tointernationally accepted standards as laiddown in IEC 584 1, 2 and 4 which is based onthe international Practical Temperature ScaleITS 90. Operating temperature maxima aredependent on the conductor thicknessof the thermo elements.Types K (chromel/alumel), J (iron/constantan)and T (copper/constantan) are the mostwell-known types. Thermocouple probesconsist of thermocouple pairs which havebeen built into a ceramic or metal sheath witha cable, connector or connection head atthe cold end.

Being selected on purpose withvery different thermal expansioncoefficients, the two materialswill generate a torque at their freeend when submitted to temperature changes.

Thanks to its double helicoidtechnology, Rüeger offers theshortest bimetal systems of theworld, which guarantees accuracyand short time temperaturemeasurements.

These gases can cover temperature changesfrom -260ºC to +800ºC and aretherefore particularly suitable for high or lowtemperature measurement. In a closedpressure system the internal pressure changewill be proportional to the temperaturechange, i.e. the pressure will increase whenthe temperature rises.
