patternsPlanning with our core identity in mind

By Mark Leonard, General Manager

As I write this, Illinois Public Media is in the midst of strategic planning. This is a fancy phrase for “figuring out what’s important, and organizing the staff’s energies to address those issues.” It is a challenging process at a time when traditional funding sources are declining, media usage by consumers is rapidly changing and traditional journalism is in upheaval. Our goal is to protect the traditional role in which public radio and television have excelled, while embracing opportunities and identifying new sources of revenue.

We have had some lively internal debates as we wrestled with these issues. The temptation is to cling to the past, and wish that change would go away, but that would invite a slow glide path to irrelevance. Public radio and television were born in a time when a limited number of stations were available, and public broadcasting was a unique offering. Since that time, cable, satellite radio, VCRs, digital video recorders, and the Internet have all had impact on our industry. We have adapted throughout, and now enjoy some of the largest viewership, listenership and support of any time in our history. How has that happened? By preserving and nurturing the unique value of public media—our core DNA, you could call it. That core identity, to which our content and services are still linked, is what we seek to preserve and nurture during our strategic planning process.

We invite your comments about what you think is our core DNA. We know that it includes content that matters and is grounded in deep knowledge and fact, not opinion. We know that public broadcasting shines light on complex issues. We know that it offers a diversity of voices and experiences. And, we know that it is fair and compassionate.

What would you add? Drop me a note in the mail or at [email protected] or post your ideas on our Facebook page at facebook.com/willradiotvonline. I look forward to adding your comments to the planning discussion, and to sharing our overall plan as it takes shape.

After delighting three generations of young learners, the Cat in the Hat comes to television for the first time as an animated series. Don’t miss the debut of The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! at 7:30 am Monday, Sept. 6, on WILL-TV. The show will be repeated at noon weekdays, and also air at 6:30 am Saturdays and Sundays.

Each show features 6-year-old Sally and Nick, best friends and next-door neighbors, who are transported on a magical journey to all corners of the globe to make natural science discoveries, with the Cat in the Hat as their guide. Along for the ride are the Fish and the Cat’s mop-headed helpers, Thing One and Thing Two.

Sally and Nick embark on adventure and silliness with the Cat in his one-of-a-kind custom vehicle, the Thinga-ma-jigger, a contraption that can sprout wings, pontoons, booster rockets and skis. The group of travelers uses the Thinga-ma-jigger to observe giant sea worms at the bottom of the ocean, fly to the rain forest to find out how many animals make their home in the great Kapok tree or shrink to the size of a bee to discover how honey is made in a beehive.

Award-winning actor Martin Short (right) will voice the Cat in the series that is based on Random House’s bestselling The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library.

s From above: The Braves’ Jeff Blauser and the Phillies’ Darren Daulton in a 1993 playoff game. Barry Bonds. The Red Sox’ David Ortiz is mobbed by teammates after his game- and series-winning home run in the 2004 AL Division Series.

The new two-part documentary picks up where Burns’ 1994 Baseball series left off. Produced by Burns, Lynn Novick and David McMahon, The Tenth Inning (7 pm Tuesday, Sept. 28, and Wednesday, Sept. 29) tells the story of America’s national pastime from the early 1990s to the present day while celebrating the game’s resilience, accomplishments and disappointments.

But first, tune in to WILL-AM’s Focus at 10:06 am Monday, Sept. 27, when Illinois Public Media News reporter Jeff Bossert interviews series producer and writer David McMahon and U of I professor Adrian Burgos, who was an advisor for the new documentary.

The Tenth Inning highlights developments that transformed the game: the 1994 strike that left many fans disillusioned with their heroes; the increasing

dominance of Latino and Asian players; baseball’s skyrocketing profits, thanks to new stadiums, interleague play and the wild card; the rise of a new Yankee Dynasty; the Red Sox’ historic World Series victory; the feats of Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa

and Barry Bonds, paired with the revelations about performance-

enhancing drugs.

Combining still photographs with insightful commentary by players, managers, experts and fans, The Tenth Inning demonstrates that baseball has continued to be a

mirror of the country—at its best and at its worst.

Will Ken Burns score with The Tenth Inning?

Illinois Public Media is hosting a day-long Public Media Camp beginning at 8:30 am Saturday, Sept. 25, at the M2 Building in downtown Champaign. The free event will bring staff members from Illinois Public Media together with area residents who’d like to voluntarily work with us to meet our community’s informational needs.

We’re looking for technology enthusiasts, citizen and professional journalists, media makers of all kinds and representatives of businesses and not-for-profits to attend. Participants will determine what kinds of issues will be discussed that

Join PubCamp Chambanaday. Read all about it and register at: http://wiki.publicmediacamp.org/PubCampChambana and join the conversation on Twitter at #PubCampChambana.

“Pub Camps are happening all around the country as people use media to address issues and gather others around a need,” said Kimberlie Kranich, director of community engagement at Illinois Public Media. “Our PubCamp is one opportunity to build relationships for future partnerships.”

watch. And they’ve got great food—hamburgers, hot dogs and four or five kinds of beer—it’s not to be confused with a Little League or collegiate game.”

Jeff also tells the story of the Danville Dans, drawing college players from across the nation who come to

Danville and trade aluminum bats for the wooden ones used in the major leagues. Players say they come to improve their game and spectators say they appreciate watching great baseball.

The Eastern Illinois league story airs at 8:59 pm Tuesday, Sept. 28, following the first episode of The Tenth Inning. The Danville Dans story airs at 9:04 pm Wednesday, Sept. 29, after part two of the documentary.

Between Little League and the major leagues

After you watch The Tenth Inning, stay tuned for short WILL-TV-produced stories about amateur baseball in central Illinois.

Reporter/producer Jeff Bossert looks at the Eastern Illinois Baseball League, which celebrated its 75th anniversary this past summer. More than 51 communities have participated in the league, but only the community of Buckley has fielded a team each of the 75 years. Jeff takes in a Buckley Dutch Masters game and talks to Fred Kroner, a News-Gazette reporter who is president of the league and the author of a new book on its history. “The Buckley field is nice—it makes you think of Field of Dreams,” said Jeff. “It’s right up against a cornfield. When electricity came to town in the 1890s, horses were phased out and the line extended, with power coming from wires above instead of horses. The Gazette offered this advice for boarding a street-car: “Never stand on the sidewalk if you wish to hail a motor car (a streetcar), but step out on the crossing and stand near enough to the track to keep from get-ting struck by the car. Don’t wait until the car is past you and then yell ‘stop the car.’ When the car is about a quarter of a block from you, just quietly raise one hand and by the time the car has reached you the motorman will have it under control.”

On Illinois Pioneers this month, John Paul and his guest George Friedman look back at the days when streetcars were the way to get around town and when the Interurban Railway made it easy to travel from city to city in central Illinois. Friedman is a retired University of Illinois professor whose hobby is researching the history of transportation in the area. The program airs at 7:30 pm Thursday, Sept. 23.

Funding for Illinois Pioneers – Champaign @ 150 is made possible, in part, by the Noel Foundation, and by donors to the Champaign 150th Anniversary Celebration Fund. More information on the city’s 150th Anniversary is at champaign150.com.
