Spotlight on:

Name: Nina E. KnappPlace of Birth: Little Rock, AKCompany/School: Oscar Company / The Citadel: Military College of South CarolinaOccupation/Title/Major: Cadet PVT / English Major Family: Lisa and Robert Knapp, Alex (Little Brother)3 words that best describe you: Dependable, determined, and selfless.Accomplishment of which you are most proud: Being a Citadel Women’s Rugby Captain.Pet peeve: Breaking a commitment or not taking responsibility for one’s actions. Most important lesson learned: Life is far too short to sit back and wait for something to happen. Get out there and take control of your own destiny. What did you want to be when you grew up? A pilot or a police officer.Toughest Challenge: Coming to the realization that you can’t always get what you want, but you should never give up on trying to attain what you want.A goal you have: Be completely supportive of myself by the time I turn 25; sooner if at all possible.Favorite Lowcountry food/indulgence: I love boiled peanuts and fried pickles or tomatoes.Favorite place in the lowcountry or favorite thing to do here: I’m not the biggest fan of water, but I love how I can drive down to Folly Beach in late October and go for a swim or just mess around with my friends and not freeze to death. I’m also in love with Charleston. It’s one of my favorite cities in the States. If not from here, what brought you to Charleston? I’m here for school as a cadet at the Citadel. My father is an ’86 Delta Co. grad. He was very persuasive in getting me to come here, but I couldn’t be happier that I did decide to.Favorite place you have lived: Anywhere in Germany. I’ve lived in Ramstein and Kaiserslautern and both were equally amazing.Least favorite thing to do: I’m not a big fan for house cleaning. It’ll get done because I hate living in filth, but it’s always been at the bottom of my “to do” list for chores. One thing people don’t know about you: I loathe coconut.

What famous person would you like to meet: I’ve never really had a desire to meet anyone famous. I have several people in history that I would have loved to meet, but no real burning desire to meet a celebrity.Person you admire most: Cliché answer, but I’d have to say my parents for being able to put up with me for the past 21 years. That takes serious dedication and patience! What would you do if you won the lottery: Pay off all of my family’s debt and move whatever I have left of it to savings.Nickname: Knappsack or KnappHobbies: Rugby, Horses, Paintball, Writing, Drawing Favorite sound/smell: I love the sound of rain pattering on a tin roof with the screen door open to carry a breeze in with it. I also love, what equestrians know, the “barn” smell. Most embarrassing/scary/amazing experience: When I was in the 8th grade, we had an open debate in front of the whole school for student government president. I don’t know what possessed me that day, but I took my microphone and spoke from my heart on everything I wanted to. That was the day I realized I no longer had an issue with public speaking and never again had the fear to speak my mind.If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be: Back to Deutschland!!!Favorite saying/quote/words to live by: Was mach nicht Umbringt, macht mich Stärker. (What doesn’t destroy me, makes me stronger.) or another, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” –Eleanor RooseveltOne thing you wish you could do that you haven’t done before/yet: I’d love to go on a tour of Europe of one these days. Do you have a mentor? If so, who/why/what have you learned from the experience: The greatest mentor I’ve had would be my mother. She’s taught me so much in such a short amount of time about life that I don’t know where I would be without her. What book do you think every leader or woman should read and why? The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli. Machiavelli’s political philosophies are not only eye opening and still easily applied to situations today, but lay the basic foundations for moral political and ethnic beliefs. I highly recommend it.

Note: Nina is employed by The Vesper Company, made through her Women in Defense contacts and networking efforts.

I cannot believe it has been 4 years since I first became involved with the Palmetto Chapter of Women In Defense. Time flies. The past 2 years as President have been rewarding. Watching and supporting the growth and development of this fledgling chapter has been exciting. But working with and being a member of such a remarkable group of women has been inspiring. Each of the Leadership Boards has brought their own unique sense of WID to the table, allowing for growth and expansion in ways I could have never dreamed possible. The passion, enthusiasm and the camaraderie were amazing. These Boards have truly worked as teams – supporting one another, encouraging one another and having fun in the process. I feel lucky to have been a part of this organization and am thankful to have developed so many new, wonderful friendships. have to admit, writing this is somewhat bittersweet, but I am excited about the

future of this Chapter and I know I am leaving it in good hands. Thank you to everyone for your support and best wishes to the new Board!
