UPDATED COVID GUIDELINES The CDC is constantly updating their guidelines as the COVID 19 virus along with its variants continue to change. The CDC is once again requiring the use of masks for indoor activities and for all congregant settings (which includes churches.). To that end, we will once again require parishioners to wear a mask while attending Mass. We thank you for your understanding.

9/11 20th Anniversary There will be special music at the 11AM Mass on Sept. 12 as part of our commemoration of the tragedy of 9/11, and its 20th anniversary.

Dear People of Ascension Church, Where do we even begin to recount the past year and a half? The first adjective that comes to mind is “enigmatic.” Early on Ascension helped lead the way in Manhattan with our pre-recorded masses on Youtube and then slowly moving to in-person masses with 25% seating. Even with the absence of full choir, the English masses included cantor, organ, and piano; the Walkirios, a trio of singers and instrumentalists. We continue our livestreaming of the 11 a.m. mass under the able leadership of Ted Arthur and Chris Chen. When Fr. Kearney asked me to provide a bulletin letter with an update on our music program, we both agreed that the letter might have to be re-vised if the Delta variant continues to run its course. Might we all need to mask up again? As of today in late July, we are hoping for our choral music to return October 3 at the 11 a.m. mass. Also on October 3, at 3 o’clock, our concert series Three Sundays at Three will open with a 50-minute recit-al for piano, oboe, clarinet, flute, and saxophone. Thomas Gilles will be the featured instrumentalist and I will provide accompaniment. A free-will offering will be taken instead of costly tickets. A full schedule of the up-coming music events of the parish will be distributed, posted, etc., as soon as we get a better feel about the Covid situation in the city. Cantors have done a tremendous job in leading our hymns and service music this past year, both virtually and in-person. Thank you to Guadalupe Peraza and Michelle Reppella (5:30) and to Margarita Martinez, Keith Spen-cer and Renee Stupfel (11:00) for their dedication and musical gifts since Spring 2020. At the Spanish masses our Walkirios team of singers and play-ers have done a tremendous ministry at both 9:30 am and 12:30 pm. Their unwavering consistency has been amazing week-to week. What is required to join the English Choir? Simply, some singing ability and experience, plus a desire and willingness to be faithful to a weekly commit-ment of Sunday morning rehearsals preceding the 11 a.m. mass. We gather at 9:30 downstairs in the choir room and go until 10:45. With the singing of the Ordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, etc.,), the Propers (Introit, Psalm, Alleluia verse, etc.) plus the Hymns and Anthems, the members of the Choir play a huge role in the worship life of the parish both weekly and for all major feasts of the church. In addition, Choir is fun and educational and offers a sense of community and belonging in a parish of more than 1,000 members. (I failed to mention you will always have the best reserved seats and bird’s eye view in the entire Church!) Please contact me if you have interest or know of others who do. Archaeological evidence supports that all societies and cultures have placed prime importance upon music as being essential to their religious exercises from the very beginning. The very first book of the Bible refers to Jubal as being the “father of all such as handle the harp and organ.” The New Testament overflows with musical references (too many to list here) including the Magnificat or “Song of Mary”; the angels who sang “Gloria in excelsis Deo” at Jesus’ birth, Jesus himself who sang a hymn with disciples in the Upper Room, and so on. What an exciting challenge we have here in this breathtaking, historical space in Morningside Heights to continue the honored, centuries-old tradition of music-making. Saint Augustine sums it up well: “He who sings, prays twice.” See you in the pews, participating and singing, of course. –Preston

Queridos Feligreses de la Iglesia Ascensión, ¿Dónde empezamos a contar el último año y medio? El primer adjetivo que me viene a la mente es "enigmático". Al principio, Ascension ayudó a lid-erar el camino en Manhattan con nuestras misas pregrabadas en Youtube y luego pasó lentamente a misas en persona con un 25% de asientos. In our faith tradition, we have a positive relation-ship with fire and water.

We light the Easter Vigil fire every year to symbolize the light of the risen Christ. We immerse ourselves in water or pour water on the heads of our babies for baptisms, symbolizing a new life in Christ. But these days of destructive fire and water should give us pause as we reflect on what is happening to God’s oikos, the Greek word for home or shelter. Drought conditions in the West have increased the wild-fires which have now burned close to five million acres, an area almost the size of Connecticut. The warming ocean surface and atmosphere have brought intense rain and hurricane flooding to the east coast and gulf area. We’ve had ample warning that global warming was hap-pening. Yet we hesitate to confront it. The California drought motivated the governor to mandate fuel effi-cient and zero emission vehicles. We know that Prime Minister Modi of India held out on signing the Paris Ac-cord on Climate until he saw photos of a major Indian city experiencing massive flooding. Why do our leaders wait until disastrous floods and fires impact us to take necessary measures to stop climate change? Why are we not paying attention to the latest report from the IPCC warning us that the planet is warming at an alarming rate and saying that if we keep going with business as usual, we will pass critical thresh-holds that mean there’s no turning back. No way to re-pair the harm we have done to God’s oikos. And we will face more catastrophic events that completely destroy ecosystems and people’s lives. What part do we play in contributing to global warming with our life styles that directly or indirectly create the fossil fuel emissions that are warming our planet. How do our actions, as individuals, as a community, and as a nation impact our brothers and sisters in other commu-nities and in the rest of the world. And more importantly, how can we contribute to cre-ating a flourishing oikos for all, as God intended, with fire and water being life-sustaining forces.

En nuestra tradición de fe, tenemos una relación posi-tiva con el fuego y el agua. Encendemos el fuego de la Vigilia Pascual cada año

Y lo que es más importante, ¿cómo podemos contribuir a crear un oikos floreciente para todos, como Dios quiso, con el fuego y el agua como fuerzas que sostienen la vida.
