In fact she advises against two striking pieces inone room, as they will detract from each other.Every room should have a single special piece as afocal point, she says, whether it’s a painting,sculpture, distinctive carpet or unique lighting

fixture. “I wouldn’t put a totally modern landscape in a

country house. I like for it to stand alone, but yetwork with the environment that it’s in. When youwalk into a room, you want to notice and appre-ciate the piece of art, but it shouldn’t jump out atyou and slap you in the face.”

Art can even be incorporated outside the homeor cottage. Totem poles, for instance, are in voguein Muskoka and look great in the right place, saysPatten, who sells totem poles ranging in heightfrom eight feet to 10 feet.

“One client put one near the Muskoka chairsaround the fire pit,” she says. “As you drive by onthe lake you can see it . . . it’s very cool.”

There’s something about designs carved intowood that seems to catch people’s eye and imagi-nation.

Mike Cutting of Cutting Brothers Constructionin Port Carling specializes in artistic carvings.

His carving can be worked right into the build-ing’s structure. Mantles, staircases, banisters, newelposts, doors and entranceways are the most popu-lar areas and themes tend to be Muskoka flora orfauna, such as pine cones, oak leaves, herons,loons, dragonflies, fish, turtles and so on.

But Cutting isn’t limited to that and has cateredto some unique and unusual requests.

“A guy wanted his family represented as bears,”he says. “I thought it would look very static, fivebears. So I talked him into doing a scene of thebears doing a trout run.”

He portrayed the animals to match the personal-ities of mom, dad and three kids, for a piece thatwill be forever treasured.

This summer, by customer request, he hollowedout half a tree and mounted a granite urinal in it.

“The customers come up with half the ideas,” hesays. “We have a lot of fun.”

Stained glass pieces are another way to add cre-ativity to a home or cottage.

lamps and other projects. She evenonce did a stained glass tabletop foran antique sewing machine.

Two factors make her workunusual in the stained glass medi-um.

First, she has anunusually represen-tational approach,and therefore iswilling to take onsubjects that are nottypically the subjectof stained glass art,such as pictures ofold Muskoka lodgesand classic boats.

“I try and stayaway from the lookof it being like apuzzle,” she says.

Second is hermethodology oftransforming exist-ing patterns in the glass into com-positional elements. Flowing linesin a raw stained glass pane becomesthe sweep of a mane of hair; a ran-dom pattern becomes the Picasso-esque form of a woman’s body; asmoke-like plume in the glass endsup belching from the smoke stack ofa steamboat.

“What I do is take the glass anddecide what it’s going to be,” theaward-winning artist says who hasbeen practicing stained glass forabout nine years.

Wilson’s piecesdon’t necessarilyhave to be installedinto windows, butcan also work wellon walls with alight behind them.

“I shine the lighton the wall and itbounces backthrough the glass,”she says.

She also doescustom installa-tions. She once didthe doors for a setof kitchen cabinets.You can use stainedglass for interior

dividing walls, she suggests, or abacklit sign behind a bar.

“They’re all art,” she says. “It’s likemaking a painting with glass.”

Furniture and accessories can beart too, particularly when designsand concepts are mixed in excitingnew ways.

Huntsville, which is owned by Taryand Ed Roossien, combines naturalelements with a sophisticated designand is a source for a full range ofhome décor items.

Visitors who step inside the storewill notice a lot of wooden furni-ture, much of which is antique.

“Wood makes everything natural,more comfortable and cozy, espe-cially old wood,” says TaryRoossien, an interior designer.

She likes the items to have weightand the grain to show through, so“you can see the life of the wood inthe product.”

For instance, she sold an armoirewith doors made from gates that are300 years old.

“We left them intact so the wholefront is very authentic. They havesuch a beautiful profile, they havesuch a texture . . . almost like a cas-tle sort of look,” says Roossien.

“When we do design we alwayslayer in the old, as well as somethingthat’s completely off. If the home isa lighter patina and stain, we’ll putin one chocolate piece. But it’s gotto be a really dynamic piece.”

Roosien also specializes in light-ing, which can have a dramaticaffect on the look of a home or cot-

tage. One line of lighting fixturesshe offers combine very old blonddriftwood, unstained, to show itsnatural colour. Topping it off is anurban-style shade.

“The electric piece goes up themiddle,” she explains, “and the topis a completely square shade, on alog cabin-style stack of driftwood.”

She also sells a floor lamp that haslegs and a post made from thebranches and trunks of birch trees,with a shade of handmade paper.

Even the exterior of a home orcottage can be personalized withaccents that make it stand out. Onesuch item that adds distinction is acupola. In practical terms, it’s a ven-tilation device. In aesthetic terms itcan be, “the crowning jewel on top,”in the words of Judy Cotter, whowith her husband Kevin, ownsCountry Classics Cupolas.

Starting the business from a sin-gle-car garage in Bobcaygeon in1989, Kevin Cotter originally sup-plied architectural trim and mould-ings.

“He recognized the appeal ofcupolas,” says Judy Cotter. “Unableto find a source with the quality andstyle he wanted, he designed ourhexagonal cupolas. Although these

A cupola, she says, provides curbappeal.

“Some rooflines are very boring,”she notes, especially with moderntechnology having eliminated theold-style stone chimney. “A cupolacan add a focal point to a roof,break up a roofline, change theheight of a building, or balancesomething like a garage that’s a stepdown. It really draws attention tothe building because it is unusual.”

There’s the practical aspect too. Acupola can prevent or cure prob-lems due to the build up of heat orhumidity in an attic or a garage,helping extend the life of rafters,insulation and roofing material.

sculptural movement in the 1960s,during which proponents construct-ed fairly large pieces which alwaysreflected their setting, Gill createsboth original and commissionedpieces.

“Though I make moreautonomous objects that deal withother issues,” he says, “a large part ofwhat I’ve done for the last 25 yearshas had to do with making sculpturein the landscape that addresses spe-cific considerations of the place inwhich it is.”

He will consult extensively withthe homeowners regarding theirproperty, the building, the viewlines and the landscaping.

“Is there a particular rise in thelandscape that you really enjoy?” hewill ask. “Is that a focal point, is it adeparture point? Do you look at theforeground and want the back-ground drawn into proximity?”

Famous for his use of the snakemotif to symbolize life and regener-ation, Gill says that the catalyticnature of his work doesn’t precludefigurative pieces.

“I think my work is highly repre-sentational, but it’s representationalof a different kind of dimension.”

In Dwight, his current home, Gillwas asked by a family to create apiece in memory of their son, whohad been killed in a welding acci-dent, and he’s been pleased by theresponse of both family and com-munity.

Sculpture has always had a com-memorative function, he notes, inall cultures, first evidenced in gravemarkers.

“The work addressing the notionof the spirit,” he says, “is pretty fun-damental in human beings.”

Gill’s wish, at heart, is that hisclients see themselves in the work hedoes for them.

“I believe that, in having art inone’s life, the enduring componentshave more to do with satiating spir-it than ego. I see artwork as beingcatalytic to a higher level of con-sciousness.”

In sum, bringing a slice of purehuman creativity into your spaceadds a dimension far beyond theeveryday. The possibilities are limit-ed only by your imagination.

The first stop after a nice round on the links isalways the clubhouse; it’s a perfect place to relax,think about the game, relive the good momentswith friends and get ready for the drive home. Butmore and more savvy golf lovers have traded thedrive for a simple short stroll from the clubhouse totheir front steps.

Last year, Michael and Janet Barnard purchased ashare of a cottage at the Diamond’s Edge fractionalownership development on Nutt Lake in Utterson,alongside the renowned Diamond In The Ruff golfcourse.

“The main attraction is it gives you the opportu-nity to play golf, and you don’t have to drive; youjust come out of your cottage and walk across theroad and there you are,” Michael Barnard quietlyboasts. “They even keep your clubs and clean themand have them out for you every morning whenyou’re ready to play.”

The Barnards had been looking for a retirementproperty in Muskoka but didn’t want to balancefeeling obligated to spend time at a cottage of theirown with retaining their memberships at theirbeloved home golf course in Toronto. An ad forDiamond’s Edge introduced them to the shared

ownership concept and the perfect solution to theirconundrum.

“It just happens to fit what we want – which is afew weeks up north, but not the time and responsi-bility of the cottage, plus an opportunity to playgolf,” Barnard says. “This is our second summerthere; we were some of the first people to join andit’s been the best investment we’ve ever made so far.”

A 9-hole course, the cozy esthetic of the challeng-ing and enjoyable Diamond In The Ruff has beencarried across to the Diamond’s Edge development,limited to only 15 Normerica post and beam cot-tages on 33 1/2 private acres overlooking quiet, sce-nic Nutt Lake.

The developers custom designed the furniturewith Munro’s Furnishings of Innisfil to complementthe rustic beauty of the post and beam designs,which features an open loft and spacious deck andscreen porch.

“It’s got a real cottage feel,” says Rhondi Peacockof Diamond’s Edge. “People want a cottage; theydon’t want a town home, and we are stand-alonehomes.”

Each three-bedroom, two-bath cottage has 10shares available, which start at $89,900. Peacockpoints out that having the cottages all share the

same basic format means the equity of each willgrow at the same level.

“You’re not mixing up million dollar homes witha thousand dollar home. They’re all of equal value,”she explains.

The first five cottages were ready for occupancy inMay of 2007, and owner feedback has been incor-porated into enhancements for the second and thirdphases. Phase two is currently ready for occupancy.

“We’ve done some favourable enhancementsthrough owner feedback,” Peacock explains. “Every-thing that we’ve done is based on what the ownersthought could be improved.”

Owners pay a small annual fee that covers every-thing from utilities, taxes and insurance to mainte-nance, housekeeping and their golf fees.

Built in 1993, Diamond In The Ruff, designed byTed George, has been called “the Augusta of theNorth” due to its exquisite landscaping and greenscare.

“We have 12 greenskeepers for nine holes and onefull-time person on flowers,” says Peacock. “It’s justbreathtaking.”

Years ago, a trip to the cottage in Muskokameant a quiet escape from the fast-paced life ofthe city. Televisions and computers were leftbehind for campfires and board games. But formany, the days of the rustic retreat are long goneand the cottage is becoming a place to showcaseeasy living and the latest in home entertainmentsystems.

Entertaining Interiors is a company based outof Barrie that specializes in outfitting cottagesand homes with complete entertainment sys-tems. Brad Trew, the company’s president, saysthough many still consider the cottage a getaway,they can’t live without the convenience of home.

“When they get to the cottage, reality sets inand they realize they still want to be connected,”he says.

The solution is to install electronics in discreetand unobtrusive ways, often in walls and behindcabinetry. Some people even look to custominstallations that allow screens to drop downfrom behind canoes on the ceiling or hidebehind a painting or mirror. He says this helpspeople retain the Muskoka feel of their cottagewithout forfeiting their technology.

“With everything hidden away, they walk intotheir cottage and it still has that rustic feel, it stillhas that Muskoka look to it and they still feel asthough they can relax there,” he says.

Trew recalls a project he started last summernear Port Carling. At this cottage he installed acomplete audio/video system with a high defini-tion television. He also installed several speakersin the ceiling of the home. All of the supporting

equipment is grouped together in a electronicscabinet located in the office. Typically with theseset ups, any CD players, IPods, DVD players ormusic servers (hard drives designed specificallyfor music storage) will be stored in a similar cen-tral location. Each source can then be controlledusing LCD touchpads mounted in the wallsthroughout the home.

The homeowner is also able to control the sys-tem through an LCD remote control which canbe used to change the TV channel inside oradjust the volume from the outside patio. Trewalso installed a simple lighting control system inthe main living areas of the home.

Because the audio/visual equipment and light-ing controls communicate through the keypads,Trew says this allows for an interesting feature.

“From his bedroom, at the end of the night, ifhe’s not sure he shut all the lights off, we givehim an all-off switch. So he hits one button andthat can take everything off throughout the cot-tage,” Trew says.

With any installation it is important to workwith a professional to get exactly what you wantout of your cottage’s entertainment system.

“You have to feel comfortable,” he says.“You’re putting your dream cottage in a bunch ofother people’s hands and hoping at the end ofthe day when they’re finished that you can walkinto it and it’ll be what you envisioned.”

For new builds, the process of outfitting ahome with the latest in audio/visual equipmentcan begin as early as the groundbreaking stage.Dale Webb, co-owner of Avery Audio in Dorset,

says it’s important to start thinking about wiringneeds as early as possible.

“From a consumer’s point of view, they shouldreally think hard about it as the plumbers andelectricians are just starting. That gives them acouple of weeks to make decisions,” he says.

With high definitiontelevision and intricate keypad sys-tems, wiring needs are changingand Webb says it’s easiest and mostcost efficient to doall the wiringbefore the walls areclosed in. He saysmany people don’tthink about elec-tronics until thebuild is complete,which can be acostly mistake.

When wiring anew home, Webbalso suggests home-owners think aboutwiring for thefuture.

“It’s importantfor the consumer totell the professionalwhat they mightsee down the road. Ask questions.What’s new coming? What’s thenew trend? Put an extra wire innow because at least that leaves thedoor open for future changes,” hesays.

At a Lake of Bays cottage Webb

worked on last spring, wiring forthe future was a major considera-tion. The homeowners discoveredthe importance of this step the hardway.

“One of thethings that welearned with thevery first installa-tion that we did inthe city was whenyou try to retrofit,it doesn’t work,”says the homeown-er, who wishes toremain anonymousdue to privacy con-cerns.

When they start-ed thinking abouttheir new cottage,the Markham-based couple spokewith Webb aboutwhat they were

looking for then and how theirneeds might change in the future.

painted them to match the lightfixtures. Most of the equipmentwas hidden away in a cabinet in thebasement and controlled by in-wallkeypads throughout the home.

He also put a home theatre sys-tem in the basement. Due to spaceconstraints posed by a stone fire-place, the view of the TV was com-promised by the large mantle. As asolution, Webb mounted the TVon a swivelling arm inside the cabi-netry that allowed the homeownerto pull the TV out from the walland position it so it can be seenfrom any seat in the room. Whenthe TV isn’t in use it can be tuckedback into the cabinets.

Webb also installed more thanjust what is visible. Inside the walls,wires lay waiting, in case the fami-ly’s needs ever change.

“It’s wired for what we need nowas well as what the future plans are,so that just makes it very easy,” thehomeowner says.

For instance, they are consideringinstalling an extra TV on the upperfloor to help elderly family mem-bers who may not want to godownstairs. Also, Internet accesswas spread throughout the home so

that when the homeowners retire tothe area and need a home office,they can still stay connected.

Unfortunately, Internet accesswas a major challenge with this

project, which is a common prob-lem throughout Muskoka.

“Access to Internet is definitely anissue. The problem that a lot ofpeople have is that high-speed . . . is

very localized to the villages andtowns,” Webb says.

He adds that homeowners haveseveral Internet options includingwireless, if a tower is nearby, andsatellite Internet. Another optionthat is gaining in popularity isaccessing Internet through cellulartowers. The final decision usuallydepends on cottage location andcost, Webb says.

With so many choices, it’s easyfor a homeowner to get over-whelmed.

“The industry is becoming veryspecialized and it’s important toconsult a professional to get an ideaof what’s out there,” Webb says.

David Johann, owner of David’sMuskoka Audio Video in Brace-bridge, says it’s important to choosea system that is right for the indi-vidual. He says customers are usual-ly looking for equipment that iseasy to use and reliable.

“We want to keep it really simple.That’s the key issue,” he says.“When you’re going out to look forhome automation and electronics,it’s great only if you can work it. Ifyou can’t work it, you just spent allthis money for nothing.”

Although simplicity is often thegoal, Johann says systems arebecoming more complex. Increas-ingly, people are turning to com-plete home automation systemsthat integrate multiple services inthe home.

“You can really turn it up a notchwith automated lighting, heatingand air conditioning and surveil-lance cameras. These can all be dis-played through keypads.”

Most people who are installinghome automation systems are look-ing towards automated lighting,Johann says. These lighting systemsinclude options like emergency set-tings that light up a pathway out ofthe house at the touch of a button.You can also turn the lights on andoff remotely, often through theInternet or a cell phone. Some sys-tems even sample how you use thelights in your home and can repli-cate that on a routine basis. Johannsays many are wary of these sys-tems, worried that they will be toodifficult to operate.

“It just requires a little bit ofplanning right at the start,” he says.“The thing to urge is that we like tokeep it simple. We sell to very intel-

ligent people all the time, but theydon’t maybe have time in their busylife to have to learn how to turn alight on.”

If a reliable and easy-to-use sys-tem is installed and programmedcorrectly, they can make life signif-icantly easier, he says.

With so much new technology

on the market, Johann says the bestidea is to consult a professional whocan help you choose a system that’stailored to what your individualneeds are.

Although home automation sys-tems are wired into new builds,there are options for homeownerswith pre-existing homes and cot-

tages as well.“You might not do quite as

much, but we can certainly do it,”Johann says. “It’s just more timeinvolved and more costly.”

Common solutions include drop-ping wires through attics or ventila-tion ducts. There is also an array ofwireless equipment for things likespeakers, computers and televisionsavailable. However, not everyone isready to embrace wireless technolo-gy yet.

“With anything that’s wireless, Idon’t care what it is, there arealways little quirks and problems,”says Webb at Avery Audio. “Wiresare always better than wireless.”

Webb adds that wireless technol-ogy is quickly evolving and perhapsin a few years, with new advance-ments, he will begin recommend-ing wireless equipment to hisclients.

No matter what equipment youchoose, the best idea is to startplanning early and consult a profes-sional. Entertainment systems areoften one of the last things home-owners think about, but somethingthey will get the most enjoymentout of in the long run.
