TDMAW 2013-2014 ProgrAM YeAr KICK-oFF

Yes, the P a c k e r s just kicked

off their season . . . unfortunately with a hard fought loss. The TDMAW will open our program year on

October 8th with a real winner:• Use of the State of Wisconsin Trade Show

Booth at the Wisconsin Manufacturing & Technology Show, October 8th, 9th & 10th, at Wisconsin State Fair Park to promote our association and our programs.

• Our first Dinner Meeting on Tuesday, October 8th at State Fair Park from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. (after the show) featuring the voice of the Green Bay Packers, Wayne Larrivee and a special book signing by Author Karin Lindner, promoting her new book “How Can We Make Manufacturing Sexy?” *Definitely plan to be part of both events and bring a prospective member(s).

As if this isn’t an amazing start, how about Milwaukee County Sheriff, David Clarke, as the keynote speaker at our Buying Expo on Tuesday, November 5th? Plan on finding great businesses that are eager to share their products and services in order to improve your organizations.

Whether your company is a TDMAW member, partner and sponsor, I truly believe you will benefit greatly with participation on one of our committees. To learn more about their mission/schedule:

The more involvement we can achieve, the better TDMAW can service each member organization, foster professional individual growth, nurture business friendships and definitely market ourselves as a first rate supply chain to Tier One Manufacturers. This will cause economic development in our region. This clearly can be a real bonus to our individual sales efforts . . . together we can knock on doors with more to offer as a team. Business success has always been about relationships.

Lastly, if you haven’t had time to investigate the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) / Obama Care, it is critical that you put it high on your priority list. It will affect all Americans on January 1, 2014. One thing is for sure, it’s neither as bad nor as good as you think. Inaccurate information has been distributed everywhere and often is false (due to political motives). Definitely stay on top of the deadline dates and required paperwork to avoid penalties. More importantly, work with a trusted advisor.

“The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure. The qualities are so much more important than the events that occur.” -Vince Lombardi

I definitely look forward to kicking off

our 2013-2014 program year together with each of you on October 8th at Wisconsin State Fair Park.

“Celebrating the Women in Granville Manufacturing”

Tuesday, October 1 H 11:30 – 1:15 p.m.Hilton Garden Park Place, 11600 W. Park Place, Milwaukee, WI

Women are playing critical roles in the success of manufacturing. We see them in Granville in many positions: on the production floor, in the front office, purchasing, sales and marketing. As a sector, manufacturing is looking to fill the gap. Women will continue to be a vital role for the future. Often overlooked in the field, we want to celebrate the ladies who make our Granville manufacturers great.

Please invite as many women from your company as possible to attend our luncheon and hear our panelists discuss their careers and how they have found fulfilling careers in manufacturing. The career path for our panelists has not been traditional and demonstrates how skills are transferable to great manufacturing careers. This luncheon is a chance to thank the women in your company and get ideas how to retain and attract more women to manufacturing.

Our distinguished panelists are:

West bend High schools technology education department is looking for help with equipment! Currently we have two Bridgeport type mills, and four lathes. The lathes are less than desirable. One lathe is from the 40’s the other three are lower quality ENCO models that have reached various states of disrepair. I inherited my labs two years ago and have put a lot of time into updated and repairing whatever possible. We have some advanced equipment including a CNC Mills, CNC plasma table, CNC router, CNC Spring Coiling Machine, and a WIRE EDM. We are always looking to move forward, however right now it is difficult to teach the basics with lower quality manual machines. What we are looking for is a business willing to donate older machines that are in working order. There will be some stipulations on size, but that can be worked out individually. In the future I would like to find room for a CNC lathe and will need to update our CNC plasma. Any help that can be given is great, even advice. Thank you for your time and consideration. excellence In The Field of Balancing

BUSCH PreCISIoN TAKeS PArT IN SMArTBALANCer TrAININg

July 30, 2013 – Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Busch Precision took to the field for some hands-on training of

the Schenck SmartBalancer from Leo Milito, Senior Application Engineer for Schenck Trebel Corporation. Joining Leo were Busch Precision’s three “point-men”, responsible for the SmartBalancer – Mark Groth, Dean Katzka, and Jarrod Breitzman – as well as the Busch Sales Team.

The SmartBalancer simply and accurately identifies unbalance within a machine. Rotors of almost any size and weight can be balanced quickly, cost-effectively, and accurately in their installed condition without having to dismantle the machine. The technicians observed as Leo demonstrated how to take measurements; from the importance of where to place the acceleration sensor, capturing the data, and saving it to the device, to reading and analyzing the results.

“The SmartBalancer is great! It’s a state of the art tool that is easy to use and handle. The compact design is a huge advantage, making on-site diagnosis a welcomed benefit for both Busch Precision and its clients.” – Dean Katzka, Mechanical Technician for Busch Precision

“It was nice to see the SmartBalancer in action. The complex work that Busch can accomplish in the metallurgy field is just another added benefit to working with their team.” - Paul Hagen, Fox Point Water Utility Foreman.

Legislative Update Article

Workforce Development - Governor Scott Walker recently proclaimed September as Workforce

Development month in Wisconsin. In issuing the proclamation, Governor Walker expressed his thoughts on the subject. “Among Wisconsin’s many strengths are its workers who produce goods and services in demand around the world. For the past two years, we have worked hard to improve Wisconsin’s business climate and spur growth to create

family-supporting jobs. The more than $100 million we are investing in Workforce Development this year and next year will help insure continued growth to the benefit of communities throughout Wisconsin.”

october: Manufacturing Month in Wisconsin - For the second straight year, Wisconsin manufacturers will be celebrating manufacturing in Wisconsin throughout the month of October. The idea of resurrecting this celebration began at a meeting between TDMAW and WMC leaders back in December 2011.

As part of the celebration, TDMAW members will be hosting tours for Milwaukee Public School students and encouraging them to consider a career in manufacturing. Many thanks to Superior Die Set Corporation for hosting a group of students from Bradley Tech and Matzel Manufacturing for hosting students from the School of Career and Technical Education (formerly Custer High School). In addition, teachers, counselors, parents and the press will also be invited to attend these tours.

We encourage all TDMAW members to open their doors during October and let the rest of Wisconsin know how important manufacturing is to the economic vitality of this state. Please send me an email referencing any activity that you may be

planning in October. I would like to share these activities in future editions of our newsletter. For more information regarding Manufacturing Month go to http://www.wmc.org/programs/manufacturing-month/

Workers Compensation - Every legislative session, the workers Compensation Advisory Council submits an agreed upon bill to the Governor and State Legislature recommending changes in the system. TDMAW members have voiced serious concerns about the current system that we hope will be rectified in legislation to be introduced later in the year. The TDMAW Legislative Committee will be meeting with Council member, Representative Dan Knodl to share our concerns with him.

Wisconsin Manufacturing and Technology Show: October 8-10 - TDMAW and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) will be partnering at the October Wisconsin Manufacturing and Technology Show to highlight the fabulous “supply chain” that Wisconsin offers to OEM’s. Please stop by at the booth to see how this joint effort is helping to support Tier II and Tier III manufacturers in Wisconsin.

For the second straight year, Wisconsin manufacturers will be celebrating manufacturing in Wisconsin throughout the

month of october.

Computer systems are vital to the daily operations of any company, monitoring to prevent issues is the key to keep businesses running. A proactive versus a reactive

approach makes a lot of sense. Overlooking or postponing maintenance because of a lack of monitoring can turn into huge issues.

Monitoring Windows systems is easy; it can be divided into two categories:

1) Hardware and Software2) Server and Workstation. Let’s focus on the Server and the Hardware category. First,

you will need to log in to the server and check all the volumes for their space. Second, open the Server Management software which should contain a Hardware category. Inside Hardware, you should see a Logs option. Check for any alerts / conflicts. These checks are very important because if you identify any issues in the logs indicating that the hard drive might have physical issues you might need to replace the hard drive.

Conflicts can also be caused by software that is released by Microsoft as optional updates. If these updates are not properly managed, they can cause significant issues with the system. Sometimes, firmware upgrades can resolve some physical issues with components on the servers. Firmware is software that the manufacturer releases to resolve or provide other functionality on their hardware.

If hardware needs to be replaced, such as the hard drive, you will need to make sure all your files are properly backed up. It is common that your server will have several hard drives. First, you need to know what Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) configuration, if it exists, is in place. All the next steps depend of what RAID configuration you have.

To prevent these issues, it is recommended that a monitoring solution is set in place. Monitoring a computer system or a

whole network begins with a piece of software and a set of instructions.

Computer hardware and software can be challenging to monitor. Without the proper monitoring tools, no proactive work can be identified. Only break-fix or reactive work can be performed. This does not allow for planning; instead, all extra time is used on fixing issues that could have been identified and prevented.

On the network side of things, Routers, Firewalls and Switches should also be monitored for memory usage, CPU usage and bandwidth utilization. Companies have higher and more reliable Internet service grade and usually faster speeds, compared to homes internet service. With the proper monitoring tools, this can be enabled to help identify if an internet upgrade is necessary or know who is downloading unnecessary big files, streaming music, videos over internet at work, utilizing resources that cost companies thousands of dollars per year.

The past may be the best predictor of the future. Take a motor vehicle report (MVR) for instance. It is a reflection of an individual’s driving behavior, attitude, and habits—

especially when you consider how many times the act did not result in an accident or recorded violation.

A study by the California Department of Motor Vehicles illustrates the relationship between the number of traffic accidents/violations a person has and the likelihood of being involved in another traffic accident.

Like it or not, as an employer the reality is you may be held responsible for vicarious liability as the result of harm caused by your employees. Far too often, businesses are put at risk when problem drivers are allowed to operate company vehicles.

Don’t take chances!

Remember to utilize Federated’s driver insurability service. It just takes a phone call to the Client Contact Center. With that phone call, Federated can review the MVRs of prospective drivers and let you know if the prospective drivers are insurable to drive your company vehicles.

Call Federated’s Client Contact Center at 1.888.FED.4949 to take advantage of this client service.

In manufacturing, collaborations between companies may come in a handful of different forms, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers in Navigating Joint Ventures and

Business Alliances. Some of the forms that may be employed include:

• A joint venture is a structural alliance where the parties form a new company.

• Virtual joint ventures are collaborative arrangements based on contracts that include defined risks and reward.

• A joint development arrangement is a long-term contract for a specific task such as purchasing or developing a part or module of a new product.

Sometimes a venture includes more than two parties. To foster collaborative ventures and innovation, cities and regions are establishing networks--business ecosystems--of educational institutions, government agencies, research organizations, entrepreneurs, mentors and sources of capital. In the Grand Rapids, MI, region, for example, a tech-driven initiative of several partner organizations led by GR Current is supporting startup medical device manufacturers. This collaborative also includes customers--area hospitals--in the mix.

If you enter a joint venture, you will be committing to sharing certain resources, knowledge and activities with your partner. The intention to collaborate can break down unless both parties have a full understanding of exactly how resources, risks and

HoW To SHAre reSoUrCeS AND FoSTer INNovATIoN AMoNg DIFFereNT PArTIeS.

rewards will be shared. Each partner must be ready to make the degree of commitment the new business will require. And new ventures are complex. Shared assets and structures from one partner may be very unlike those of the other, making integration difficult.

Any successful collaboration requires firm, mutual trust. To support trust, create transparency. Your plan should define the key business and performance indicators to be measured, as well as the monitoring mechanisms to be used--and how they will be reported. While the venture is being structured and negotiated, the parties must thoroughly and explicitly share and understand a vision and purpose for it. Key stakeholders and their objectives need to be identified, and the objectives of the new venture aligned with them. There should be a clearly documented strategy for how to achieve the objectives.

The companies should make a firm commitment of the resources and leadership needed to start up and manage the new venture. Expectations and accountability should be part of the plan. The agreement also should establish policies and procedures within a solid operating and governance framework. However strong your trust and plans are, things can change. Be sure that your understanding and contracts are clear on exit mechanisms you may need if things are not going the right way.

Another company and yours may have the right ingredients to do more together than you could do separately. With all details clarified beforehand, your joint venture will be able to hit the ground running.

In all trade organizations, the key benefit is the networking with other members who share common interests, challenges and goals. The plant tour workshops take networking to

a whole new level for the AMBA, sharing the unique benefit of thoughtfully planned presentations about best practices, distinctive business aspects, organized tours of the facilities and networking with other attendees. Plant tour workshops provide an accelerated education in mold manufacturing management and methods.

Strohwig Industries of Richfield, WI, hosted the AMBA’s tour August 1, 2013. With 170 employees, over 200,000 square feet, there was a lot to see and talk about. Seventy-five attendees attended the workshop in last month.

From the beginning, it was apparent that the tour wouldn’t be just another walk through a shop. After a brief introduction, all participants were issued red and green cards and tasked with taking notes throughout the tour, marking down areas of excellence, as well as areas for improvement. This unique approach made the tour a win-win for Strohwig, the host, and the attendees. The Strohwig team received thoughtful input from its peers as to how it might build its business to the next level.

With a carefully planned schedule, the tour actually started with a presentation of some behind-the-scenes information. President Wolfgang Strohwig gave a brief history of the company and shared the vision he and partner Larry Glass had started with 35 years ago. Then he introduced four managers who each gave presentations about design and engineering, programming, machinery and tooling. In a company so impressively large in numbers, some of the small numbers, like only two modelers and only two offline 3-D programmers, were real surprises. Exemplary efficiency like this underscored the opportunity to learn from a company that is truly efficient.

For the actual shop tour, attendees split up into smaller groups of only eight to ten people each. With smaller groups, it was easier to stay close to and hear our guides, and all had more

opportunity to ask questions. Specific stations visited included design and engineering, small parts machining, EDM, palletized machines cells, large machining, mold tryout and validation, and a large, enclosed area for mold cleanup and refurbishing. Throughout the company, the crew was working on jobs as usual, and visitors had opportunities to ask machine operators and others about what they saw.

Returning to the original meeting area, participants had time for networking with the hosts and other attendees while enjoying a catered lunch. The groups at each table reviewed the tour, compiled their input from the green and red cards and shared their commendations and recommendations with the table. As a group, the praise and suggestions were compiled by the AMBA Executive Director for presentation to Strohwig management.

A busy three and a half hours passed quickly, sharing years of knowledge to help take all participants’ businesses to the next level.

Born in Chicago, Illinois reared and educated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ms. Vera D. Ford graduated from Rufus King High School in January 1965. After graduation from

Rufus King High School, Ms. Ford was one of four high school graduates to enter the Los Angeles Job Corps Center in June 1965. After thirteen months she graduated in the top five of her Nursing Class.

In 1966 she took the California Nursing Board test and upon successful completion, returned home to Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). In addition to receiving her license in California, she also received her license in the State of Wisconsin in 1966. Ms. Ford worked as an LPN in the Milwaukee area for over twenty-two years. After years in the Nursing field, she pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Wisconsin in 1983.

Once she returned to Milwaukee, Vera immediately began exerting her efforts to promote the Job Corps Program. She spoke at local junior and senior high schools and appeared on local radio and television shows informing the community and area youth of the Job Corps program and its benefits.

In 1968, she became the first Job Corps graduate to join Women In Community Service Inc. (WICS) as a volunteer recruiter, and in 1983 became a member of its Board of Directors. In 1984, she achieved another first, as the first Job Corps graduate to become the Secretarial Director of the National Job Corps Alumni Association (NJCAA) headquartered in Washington D.C. and funded by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Ms. Ford’s affiliation with Job Corps has taken many paths. She has been a Deputy Center Director at the Penobscot Job Corps Center in Bangor, Maine; Assistant Executive Director, Women In Community Service Inc. in Washington D.C.; Center Director at the New Haven Job Corps Center in New Haven, Connecticut and Treasure Lake Job Corps Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. Ms. Ford has also been a member of several Workforce Investment Boards in Connecticut and Oklahoma.

“ ’’ Ms. Ford is a living example

that “ Job Corps Works.”Ms. Ford’s greatest accomplishments have been testifying

before the House Committee on Education and Labor in support of continued Job Corps funding; receiving the prestigious National Job Corps Hall of Fame award in July 1983; appearing on the “Today Show” with then Secretary of Labor, Elizabeth Dole during the celebration of Job Corps 25th Anniversary and finally founding and becoming President of AREV Training Consultants, LLC, a company that develops and facilitates Leadership and Organizational Workshops for Job Corps Centers across the country.

Ms. Ford’s life has been centered around helping others so that one day they might be better prepared to help themselves. This has been exemplified by the many years of volunteer service devoted to community concerns and the promoting the Job Corps program.

In her current position as the Director of Residential Living at the Milwaukee Job Corps Center operated by MINACT, Inc., she continues to positively touch the lives of youth through modeling, mentoring and monitoring their personal growth and development.
