On a beautiful, sunny Saturday two weeks ago, more than 2,600 current and past employees and their families at- tended the 2014 family day event at the Sunnyvale facility. Attendees enjoyed a now and then look at Marine Systems, taking in the rich history in the Iron Man Museum and seeing firsthand the current capabilities with tours through the factory as well as engineering/program and mission assurance. Outside, there were numer- ous informational (and fun!) booths from a number of different vendors, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), HealthWaves and Environ- mental, Health, Safety and Fire Protection (EHS&FP). Onsite were representatives from the SPCA, Weight Watchers, March of Dimes and Northrop Grumman Federal Credit Union. Kids could find fun give- aways at the booths, while their parents had a chance to interact and network with the various booth hosts. The Girl Scouts of Northern California and the Fremont High School girls softball team were also onsite, helping with carnival games and the three bounce houses in the courtyard of Bldg. 82. Also in the entertainment line-up were musical and dance perfor- mances from the students of the College of Adaptive Arts, employees and their families and friends. Cesare, a bal- loon artiste extraordinaire, wowed children of all ages with his balloon art, captivating audiences of even the smallest of children. Some of the longest lines were found at the henna and face painting tents where crowds lined up for a chance to be the canvas for the wonderfully tal- ented artists. Perhaps one of the biggest highlights of the day was the food. There was a fantastic meal provided and guests en- joyed a feast of BBQ chicken, tri-tip, burgers, hot dogs and sides galore. There were ice cream and sno-kone machines for those looking to take a cool break from the heat of the afternoon. new organization brings a unified and integrated perspec-tive to the engineering function along with strong tech-nical leadership, allowing us to more effectively provide engineering resources and capabilities. This will better

support Marine Systems’ business objectives in all areas including new product/system development, production support, engi-neering services to the fleet and new business growth. Foremost, this will pro-vide improved alignment with Northrop Grumman and SSP’s vision for a “One Launcher” Program, perfor-mance as the Underwater Launch Systems Integra-tor, communication within Northrop Grumman Corpo-ration and with our external launcher community. Within this new department we will continue to build and grow

our business, enhance our technical capabilities and confi-dently take on any technical challenge and opportunity to fulfill the Marine Systems strategic vision. Go Launcher!

Launcher Engineering Gets a New Look

To best align with both our Launcher customer’s objectives and our own business needs, we recently reorganized Marine System’s Launcher engineering department. We did this by integrating the two Advanced Launcher Devel-opment Program (ALDP) and DSS engineering departments into a single, functionally-based depart-ment that supports all launcher programs and new business captures. As part of this reorganization, we’ve added a new Electrical and Controls Engineering group, a new Engineering Program Management (EPM) group and new Chief Engineering positions.

Our Launcher business is stronger than ever with a growing production back-log, significant deployed fleet service contracts, the large Ohio Replacement ALDP, and a growing number of promising new business opportunities such as Sea Dragon, CPGS and several sensitive and classified programs. Our

ERG-Sponsored Training Draws Over 100 ParticipantsBy Barbara Johnson

On Aug. 19, the Sunnyvale Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) joined together to sponsor a day of Microsoft Office training to help employees become more familiar with the recent rollout of Office 2010 and Windows 7. In addition, an Excel class was held for people wanting to increase their proficiency in that software. The workshops were taught by Skillpath instructor, Michael Friedman, and were attended by more than 100 employees.

Overall, the Skillpath seminars were widely agreed to be a valuable source of tips and tricks that will help users be more efficient in their daily use of Windows, Outlook, and Excel. Feedback from attendees indicated that 60% of the partici-pants fulfilled a performance objective by attending one or more of the training workshops.

If you could not make a session, but are interested in the material that was covered, workbooks for all three sessions are available by contacting any ERG officer.

even amidst pressure to do the opposite. Sarah Fedler, co-chair of Sunnyvale Connect1NG, found one piece of ad-vice especially poignant - “Surround yourself with a team of people who play to your strengths and provide support for your weaknesses; teamwork is truly the key to success!” Isn’t that the true measure of good leaders? Knowing well your strengths and weakness and working together with others to ‘fill in the gaps’ in order to propel forward your-self and your organization.

Meeting with ERGs wasn’t her only focus. Gloria rounded out her visit with a tour of the factory and sat in on some key program reviews. Her next visit will be with the Board of Directors in February.

In early September, Gloria Flach, Corporate Vice President and President, Electronic Systems sector, had breakfast with more than 40 members of the Sunnyvale Employee Resource Group (ERG) leadership teams. Each of the Sunnyvale ERGs presented their groups’ accomplishments and plans for the remainder of 2014. Gloria then said a few words, expressed thanks to the many people who work hard to support and foster engagement and inclusion of all employees and then offered some encouragement.

Gloria’s visit and time with the ERG Leadership Team left a lasting impression – providing insight which included her own personal experiences. She stressed the importance of believing in your abilities and staying true to yourself,

Congratulations to Armando Cervantes and the gam-ing club for sponsoring two gaming areas on campus in Bldgs. 41 and 61. Our employees have been enjoying the pool tables, electronic dart boards, foosball ma-chines and table tennis. During family day, Armando enjoyed showcasing the area while the employees and their families enjoyed the games and popcorn. Thank you Armando for your hard work and dedication to the club!

The weekend of July 18th, seven Marine Systems’ em-ployees, along with 15 of their families and friends, at-tended the Fitness Club’s 2nd Annual Camping and Hik-ing trip. 22 people set up camp at the Sunset Campground group site in Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park.

The Marine Systems’ employees went to see several sites throughout both parks by strolling through the Sequoia groves to see the Gen. Sherman Tree, hanging out at Hume Lake, and partici-pated a couple of high elevation hikes. Megan Nguyen, Ca-mille Barnes-Mosley, Merle Barron, and Frank Belinsky ex-plored the park with friends on a 10-mile hike to Rowell Meadow and a 6.4-mile hike to Mitchell Peak in Sequoia National Forest. Each hike featured expansive mountain

views, wild flowers, and interesting rock formations. John Rendler and his family checked out the park museums

and climbed to the top of Moro Rock overlooking the central valley and Kings Canyon. Patricia Martinez and her family went horseback riding in Sequoia National Park and boating in Hume Lake.

At the end of each activity filled day, everyone enjoyed the peaceful seren-ity of eating and talking around the campfire. All the members and their guests are looking forward to next year’s camping and hiking trip.
