TRANSCRIPT
September 2014 Volume 25 Issue 9
Sunday Discipleship Begins Sunday, September 7 at 5:30pm
Basic. Featuring Francis Chan Because it is vital that you know what you believe about God, we as a church will be examining this through a series by Francis Chan called “Basic.” Through videos and small groups, this series will help us clarify what we believe about God; we will learn together, we will grow together, and God will gift us with hearts for one another (Romans 1:11-12). Youth will meet in the basement. Adults will meet in the Chapel.
Wednesday Discipleship Begins Wednesday, September 10 at 6:15pm
Leaving A Legacy Through Your Marriage facilitated by Jeremiah & Chandra Heath Through this study, you will gain insight to know the barriers we face by taking an honest look at our relationship with God, with our partner and the sin we try to cover up. Once we can look at these topics honestly, we can move toward not only having a strong, healthy marriage, but a marriage that will point people to Jesus...and change the direction for this generation and the generations to come.
Wednesday Bible Study & Prayer facilitated by Paul Lumbatis
Monday Discipleship Begins Monday, September 15 at 6:30pm
Walking By Faith facilitated by Shannon Windhorst & Susan Wilder This women’s study contrasts the evidences of walking by faith and walking by sight and encourages participants to take risks, give God control, persevere through hardship, receive God's gifts, be guided by the Truth rather than feelings, and seek God.
Sign up in the foyer. Nursery is provided for Wednesday and Sunday evenings only.
Making Disciples Who Make
Disciples
Simpsonville Baptist Church is at a critical junc-
ture in our history. The communities in which we live are rapidly
changing and experiencing consistent growth. Demographers
expect that growth to continue as Louisville expands toward the
east. We are located in the "golden triangle" of commerce and
transportation around Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati.
Louisville and Lexington are major interstate corridors between
North and South and the Midwest.
Simply put, with commercial and residential growth come
greater opportunity, responsibility and challenge for the church-
es of Shelby county. In particular, as a small town grows in popu-
lation and business, culture will likely be challenged as well. Culture is the expression of how we live our life socially,
politically, religiously, ethically, etc. There can be good aspects of culture as well as bad aspects of culture.
Culture is a reflection of the people living in a designated area, region, state or country. People, and therefore
culture, are affected by all kinds of medium: TV, FaceBook, iPhone, email, entertainment, sports, business, etc.
The Bible describes the Church as salt, light, and ambassadors for Jesus Christ.
Since 1830, our church has ministered to the people of Shelby county and Eastern Jefferson county. Will we
continue to be a vibrant and growing witness for the communities in which we live? Will our church rise to the oppor-
tunity and challenge of spiritual and numerical growth? Is God calling for us to increase our responsibility and ministry?
I believe He is. I want to call you and our church to prayer. I strongly believe it’s time to return to two worship
services. One worship service is impeding our spiritual and numerical growth. I believe two worship services could
facilitate outreach and evangelism. The worship services will be identical and we will expect attendees of each worship
service to support children's church, nursery, First Impressions, outreach, ushers, etc. The schedule for Sundays would
be as follows: First Worship: 8:30am; Sunday School: 9:45am; Second Worship: 11am.
Our attendance over the past months has been large enough to push us to the back of the gym, allowing little to
no room for much ease of movement or fellowship. This gathering space in the back of the worship area is important
for hosting guests and greeting members. The fellowship before and after worship is integral to our love and care for
one another.
The following ministries are developing plans and experiencing seasons of growth: women's ministry, home-
bound visitation, deacon visitation, ministry staff outreach, recreation ministry, First Impressions, Adventure Club and
missions. Other ministries are enthusiastically developing and implementing plans for spiritual and numerical growth:
youth, children, college-age, and Sunday School.
Our administrative teams, finance, personnel, stewardship, property, and ministry involvement team, are pre-
paring for spiritual and numerical growth. Their work undergirds and supports the ministries of the church in tremen-
dous ways. Our Master Plan team is beginning to meet regularly to plan for the next building phase of our church. Our
church staff is working effectively and harder than ever. We have begun to increase discipleship, evangelism, involve-
ment, and Sunday School plans.
I have been meeting with the deacon ministry and appropriate ministry team leaders in the last two months and
have asked them to partner with the ministry staff to begin a second worship service. With your help, I expect two wor-
ship services could begin soon. This ministry endeavor will require vision, sacrifice, and commitment. I believe we can
do it with God's help and for His glory! You will hear much more information as we proceed.
God our Father, we ask for Your wisdom, direction and power to bring You glory and to be faithful to Your
Kingdom. We ask You to give us unity, protection and provision to further Your ministry in the communities in which
we live and beyond. We humbly thank You for the opportunities and challenges before us. We desire to see You
revive and awaken us through Your Spirit and Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The question that is currently raised for Simpsonville Baptist Church is how will we be instrumental in affecting
the culture for God's kingdom.

Walking By Faith: Lessons Learned in the Dark Jennifer Rothschild
Jennifer Rothschild knows not everyone sees 20/20. Although Jennifer is physi-
cally blind, God has taught her to see that living a life based on faith rather
than sight requires us to look at our situations through a lens that filters out what
is seen and, instead, focuses on what is unseen -- those things that are eternal.

Music Ministry
Dear Parents, Hello! I want to take a moment to tell you about a wonderful opportunity for you and your children. Beginning Sunday, September 7th from 5:30-7:00pm, we will be kicking off a new year of AWANA. Now, I say “a new” because AWANA will be all new this year. Not only is it on a new night, it will also be a “new thing” compared to what it’s been the last few years. I recently spent some time with the leaders of a large AWANA program in Frankfort, and have come away from there FIRED UP about what God can do in our own AWANA program here at Simpsonville Baptist Church. I have served in AWANA for several years, and never took the time to really learn what the mission and vision of AWANA really is. It is not just another program to entertain kids. It is an intentional two-pronged ministry with the purpose of 1) supporting parents as they train their children in the ways of the Lord and 2) to help children develop a strong Biblical worldview as they memorize Scripture. All of this is done while the kids earn awards, participate in crazy theme nights, have weekly game time and fun fellowship. One of the things that make AWANA successful is the relationships and bonds the children make with each other and their leaders. The children are placed into a small group of 4 or 5 with an adult leader. This group stays together throughout the year and supports, challenges and encourages each other to work hard to accomplish their goals. This small group concept is wonderful but has a hefty downside…it limits the number of children we can take on a weekly basis. If we do not have the adult leaders, we have to turn children away. We want this minis-try to be successful and effective, and to do this we need to keep our ratio small so that the leaders can effectively disciple and lead their groups. Would you prayerfully consider what part you and your family could play in this wonderful ministry? We would love for your children to participate so they can continue to grow in the Lord! Would you be willing to come be a group leader? This would just involve listening to the children in your group quote the verses they’ve been working on and being their cheerleader. I promise, you will be rewarded as you watch these kids grow in the Lord!! Maureen Bland, AWANA Coordinator
NURSERY TEAM: One of the best first impressions we can make with new
guests is to have a well-staffed, nurturing nursery team. Currently we do not
have enough volunteers to do this. Please consider serving once a month
during either Sunday School or Worship. Students must be 16 in order to vol-
unteer with an adult. Please sign up by the Welcome Center kiosk in the
foyer.
CHILD CHECK-IN STATION: We are in need of additional volunteers to check in
our children on a monthly basis. Volunteers must be members and training
will be provided. Contact Cindy Lowe at 722-5249 to help.
ELEMENTARY CHILDREN’S CHURCH LEADERS: We are seeking 2 teams to lead
our elementary children during worship. Contact Steve Boyd at 722-5246
ext. 12.
PRESCHOOL SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER: We have the need to begin an additional preschool class. If you enjoy teaching
young children and are interested in serving, please contact Steve Boyd.
Begins Sunday, September 7 at 5:30pm.
AWANA kids participate in
scripture memorization, kid’s
worship and games.
Enrollment is limited to the number of adult leaders. Book and uniform fees are
$20 per student.

Recreation
FELLOWSHIP Our recreation team organized a great canoe fellowship in July. We had a wonderful group that spent an enjoy-
able day on the river. Only one canoe tipped over! You’ll have to ask Beanie and Jody Jones who it was...
"For God loveth a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 6:7 A reminder from last month's newsletter: We all face a significant financial challenges in the economy today. God understands our problems, but He really wants us to trust Him and put Him FIRST. Make God first in your financial plan and see how He blesses the "rest of the story!"
Your new Stewardship Team met last week and has tried to put a program together that hopefully educates and facilitates the giving experience. There are more ways to give than cash or writing a check! The Finance team is working on a direct deposit system for giving to the church electronically (ETF). Many people are now paying bills on line and we encourage you to use that method if you are so inclined. Many people feel that this can still be a worshipful experience - almost like passing the plate during the service. As far as other electronic methods are concerned, we feel that this is not the time for a church portal due to security issues.
We will also try to communicate more through Facebook and other new social media formats. No single system is appropriate for all members, but we do want to communicate with our members in the most effective way. For those who completely shun technology, may I remind you that if we always shunned the newest communication technology, we would probably be using smoke signals! LOL
There are many new ways to communicate including a church App or using QR for new information. There is some wonderful literature available that can guide you through regular tithing. We'll prayerfully explore these and other methods throughout the year and we'll see what works!
We will be utilizing more testimonials in the service, encouraging more Sunday School time be devoted to stewardship lessons and most importantly, we will ask you to join us in PRAYER about what God would have each of us to do in the area of giving back to Him for His glory and honor. Thank you for considering your own generosity to Him. Charlie Wallace

Joy and Dignity at Christmas The Christmas Village Toy Store provides a "hand up" for Shelby County families who want to purchase affordable new toys for their children at Christmas. Rather than simply giving a handout of toys to at-risk families, we believe in em-powering families to purchase Christmas gifts for their own children. We will be sponsoring a Christmas Village Toy Store on December 13 where families can come and shop for new toys at a discounted price. We will start the day out for the families by providing coffee and doughnuts and ending their shopping experience with gift wrapping their purchases.
We are asking you as a church to help provide a dignified Christmas shopping experience for the families by purchas-ing new toys for the Christmas Toy Store. There will be a wish list of toys available on September 14 and a short video about the Christmas Village Toy Store.
For more information contact Shannon Windhorst, Darlene Noble, or Jill Sowder.
Seniors, you can help by providing your
school dance and prom pictures from the
1940-1960’s. Photos can be taken to the
church office.
We are in need of servers! Please contact

Kenya Missions Update
Poultry Development
Project In 2012 SBC returned to Kenya to follow up on the progress made after our first trip in 2010. The mission team took with them
an egg incubator as a gift for the people of Soy which was donated by one of the couples on the trip. They felt strongly that
making this additional tithe gift could indeed change lives. The following is an update provided by the Soy poultry development
coordinator, Nathan Osiemo. Our first incubation had an impressive performance with 587 chicks out of 733 eggs hatched. These chicks were given to various groups of people but after some research we decided in January 2013 to concentrate on using the chickens to help alleviate a very serious health condition in Soy, jigger infestation. Jiggers are small parasites related to fleas that infect the hands and feet. Jigger infestations naturally occur in homes with low sanitary conditions and in extreme poverty. Those infected with jiggers find it very difficult to walk and hold things and thus difficult to walk. Many are ostracized due to their infestations which is always grossly visible. More importantly, the use of needles to remove the jiggers contributes to the spread of HIV when the needles are shared by a community. By providing chicks free of charge we were able to break the cycle of poverty in 47 out of 60 homes. The chickens not only provided necessary nutrients through the meat and eggs but also a source of income. The manure is naturally high in nitrogen and is used to fertilize our nitrogen-poor fields.
All the chicks and eggs given out free of charge had one condition attached to the offer. The condition was that after the flocks were established, they too were to donate some products to their neighbors. By September 2013 we had given out 1,400 chicks to jigger-infested homes, widows with no source of income and other needy families. We have many adult chickens that have proven to be natural incubators so the ministry is continuing to grow.
We have done some research and created a new breed of chicken which starts producing eggs at four and five months old. The roosters of this breed are heavy meat–producers at nine months old. We have named this breed in honor of the couple who donated the incubator. By February 2014 we had given out 6,861 of this new breed to needy families. Through select breeding, we have also improved our indigenous chickens so much so that they are now beginning to lay at 6 months of age.
Our new breed was brought to the attention of a television reporter, Karuga, who purchased 1,000 eggs with incubation and electricity fees. He later resigned from his prestigious position to begin poultry farming. Karuga has since inspired many and there has been a growing number of people developing their own poul-try farms, one of them being a 75 year old lady who is raising 55 chicks to pay the school fees for her or-phaned grandchildren!
Beginning in March, we decided to start selling day old chicks to the community members to begin other projects. It is now a policy that 30% of the sales goes to the Scholarship Fund which is helps the bright stu-dents from needy families. I believe that education is one of the strongest weapons in fighting poverty. We are in the process of beginning a Rural Development Foundation which will help us to launch into other minis-try areas with the profits. We have also sold many chicks and eggs to our neighboring Republic of Malawi.
We are excited about our progress but we do continue to face some challenges. The first of which is our farmers inabil-ity to purchase commercial feeds. This causes slow growth with less egg production. We also deal with the ever present need of electricity. The frequent blackouts affect the incubation of eggs. Viral diseases, such as Newcastle also kill many of our chickens because they are unvaccinated. My intent is to purchase a refrigerator to begin storing vaccines and to continue to develop poultry further by coming up with new breeds that are suitable for poor communities.
This SBC couple were hoping their additional tithe offering of an incubator
would change a few people’s lives. But God took their gift and changed an
entire community. Their gift gave hope to those without hope and purpose to
those without purpose. God magnified his gift to reach those who needed an
education. The people of Soy are realizing that they are endlessly blessed by
their willingness to give and share with one another.
One of our other mission team members on our 2nd Kenyan mission team also made additional tithe
gifts to support Nathan’s community ministries. Nathan writes “Today my heart was touched to see a man who has been grounded for more than thirty years. He is unable to both walk and speak. Most families see such persons as a curse. Hilary was abandoned by his mother and is now in the care of his grandmother. I was able to purchase his first
wheel chair thanks to your generosity.” The pictures are not the best but you can clearly see the joy and
excitement upon Hilary’s face! Only God knows the impact that these faithful, obedient offerings will
produce in the Kingdom.
