Dear Parents,

During the week of September 30th your child will take a MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on a computer or tablet. MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth. Teachers use results to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students.

MAP Growth tests are unique, and it adapts to your child’s responses to measure your child’s skill level. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level.

Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.

MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students who are in the same grade, subject and have the same starting performance level. Each school year, students will participate in MAP testing at the beginning, middle and end of the year. Following each testing period, you will receive a Family Report showing a summary of how your child is performing academically.

We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about MAP Growth, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit.

Sincerely,

Carol Mixon

ARTSONIA

All students will be using Artsonia to turn in their artwork. I will need you to log onto the following website: https://www.artsonia.com/parents/register/artist.asp after you’ve received your child’s permission letter, which I will send home.

HELLO PARENTS, My name is Lauren Belcher and I am the art teacher here at Canyon Creek Elementary. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. This year in art, your student will be doing all sorts of amazing things. We’ll learn about color theory, drawing techniques, painting, hand building skills (clay) and basic construction. I am on campus Monday and Tuesday, I am also a teacher at Spring Creek Elementary the other days. Do not hesitate to reach out to me via email or through the remind app which I have setup for you all to stay connected and informed. It is my goal that all students will leave art with a strong capability to solve problems creatively, which is a highly sought-after skill in today’s world. We are following the CHAMPS expectations in the art room and in all of the CCE classrooms this year. If students are having significant trouble following the expectations there are consequences as follows:

1) 1st Violation – verbal warning 2) 2nd Violation - they will sign a Reflection Log 3) 3rd Violation – they will sign a Reflection Log and a

letter will be sent home to parents 4) 4th Violation – Behavior grade in art will drop to an N,

and based on offense, office referral and a meeting will need to be arranged to discuss further

I am excited to share we will be having an ART Fundraiser with “Art to Remember”, to help raise funds for painting supplies, paper, paint brushes, clay, clay glaze, and so much more. Your kiddo(s) have been working hard in the art room already getting their artwork ready to SHIP by Sept. 24th. Order Forms will come home by Oct. 14th, orders due the following week so the amazing products are in your hands before Thanksgiving, just in time for Holiday gifts this year. Thank you so much for reading and I look forward to having a great year with your child.

All my best, Lauren Belcher

Canyon Creek Elementary Attendance Policy School Hours The school day begins at 7:50 a.m. and ends at 3:00 unless it is an RISD-designated early release day of 1:00 p.m. Students should arrive between 7:30 and 7:50 a.m. Supervision is provided in the cafeteria beginning at 7:20 a.m. The first bell rings at 7:40 to go to class. The tardy bell rings at 7:50. Students arriving after 7:49 must enter through the main office and obtain a class admit pass. Daily Attendance Attendance is taken each day at 9:00 a.m. According to TEA, if a student is absent at this time, he/she will be counted absent for the entire school day. A student must attend 90% of the days in a school session to receive credit for the year. Absences When a student is absent from school for any reason (even when sent home by the nurse), the student must bring a

note signed by the parent that describes the reason for the absent. Em ails cannot be used to excuse absences. The absence note must be received no later than 3 days after the absence. Excused— Illness, funeral of a family member, medical/dental appointments, unforeseen family emergency Unexcused—family vacation, non-school related trips, private lessons, personal business If a student is absent more than 4 consecutive days for an extended illness, then a note from the healthcare provides

required to excuse the absences. Medical Appointments during the School Day Partial-day absences for health-care appointments for the student are not considered absences from school if the stu-

dent provides a note from the health care provider when returning to school on the same day as the appointment. Tardies Students not in their classroom when the 7:50 bell rings are considered tardy (even if in the building but not in their

classroom.) Tardies are arrivals from 7:50-8:05. The principal will work with parents when tardiness becomes excessive. Late arrivals after 8:05 are considered UNEXCUSED for the day!!! (unless arriving with a note from a health

care professional) The district will notify parents after the 5th and 10th tardies. Truancy Prevention RISD sends daily phone calls and emails to parents when a child is absent. RISD Student Services sends out a warning letter after the 3rd, 6th and 9th truant (unexcused absence) day. A conference with school administration will be scheduled after the 6th truant (unexcused absence) day. Student Services may make a referral to truancy court on the parent of a student who is absent without excuse for 10

or more days, or parts of days, within a 6-month period in the same school year. Updated Sept. 2019
