EUNIC SHORT SHORTS FROM EUROPE

Granted with the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 label, Short Shorts brings to the public some of the best European short films of diverse genres such as animation, documentaries and drama. Each member of the EUNIC Ireland cluster presents a short film from their country in this charming celebration of European cinema at the Irish Film Institute.

LUNEDÌ AL CINEMAMonday at the Cinema is a series of screenings dedicated to Italian contemporary cinema, promoted in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. All the films are shown at the IIC in Italian with English or Italian subtitles. Free admission.

READING DANTE AT THE IIC

Several times throughout the Commedia Dante addresses the lettore with the belief that he will be read by the futura gente – ourselves, and this we did and shall do again with Prof. Corinna Salvadori Lonergan and read the conclusion of the journey, the final cantica, Paradiso. Although Dante is ‘transhumanized’, his heavenly experience is shared with us and placed in the context of our human condition, on our earth, so small in the cosmos, and tragically ‘l’aiuola che ci fa tanto feroci’, a threshing ground that makes us fierce. It was not intended, but the resulting number of readings will be 33, very Dantean.

The encounters will take place in the Pavilion at the Italian Institute of Culture on Tuesdays at 6.30pm, ending about 8.00. The explanation will be in English and the reading of the text in Italian. We look forward to welcoming all who want to enjoy the wonder of the Commedia, readers old and new. Don’t worry if your Italian is not perfect - Dante will improve it.

Italian culinary traditions come from that same mix of history, cultural exchanges, creativity and passion which is at the foundation of all of the most elevated manifestations of Italian culture. Small Utopias Italian architecture of the Third Millenium

Small Utopias combines the research of the best Italian architectural energies along three parallel directions: the authors, the project, the themes. The ten authors chosen for the exhibition remind us of the natural tendency of architecture to hold memory and future together. Two of the recurring themes are recycling (both as a civil necessity and a creative device) and inhabiting a place, in its various meanings.Exhibition curated and designed by MAXXI Architettura for the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and sponsored by Darta Saving Life Assurance and Allianz Global Life.

Fare Scuola series - 4th, 11th and 18th SeptemberFare scuola (literally “to make a school”) is an Italian idiom which conveys a wide variety of concepts, including “to build knowledge”, “to invent a new way of doing something that others will follow”, “to inspire or become a model for others coming after you”. Someone who “makes a school” is a pioneer who gains the respect and affection of his followers – and rightly so.Throughout September, Eraldo Affinati, Federico Fubini and Gianrico Carofiglio will be at the IIC to tell us about different ways of fare scuola: creating schools for immigrants (Affinati), reminding us of the power of education (Fubini), or stressing the importance of reasoning when looking at complex social events (Carofiglio). All these authors have fatto scuola, each in his own way. Let us find out how in this new series of events at the Italian Institute of Culture!

Eraldo Affinati is the founder of the first Penny Wirton School in Rome, a volunteer-based educational institution where migrants can learn Italian. His approach to education is inspired by the work of Lorenzo Milani, who in the 1950’s and 60’s denounced the inequalities of an educational system that reinforced the marginalisation of children from poor backgrounds. In his latest book Il sogno di un’altra scuola: Don Milani spiegato ai ragazzi , Affinati explores the life of the “priest of Barbiana”, while reaffirming the ever-so-relevant need for inclusive education.

A showcase for the excellence of Italian illustration through the work of the winners of Annual 2018, a competition gathering the best examples across different fields of graphic design. The exhibition consists of 28 illustrations designed to accompany covers and texts of books, magazines, newspapers, children’s books, animation and consumer products and design in Italy and abroad. It includes works by Bruno Bozzetto, one of the most eclectic and influential Italian cartoonists, and Lorenzo Ceccotti, renowned illustrator and cartoonist.

Gianrico Carofiglio, internationally acclaimed novelist and former anti-Mafia judge, presents his hard-hitting, morally complex novel The Cold Summer. Pietro Fenoglio, an officer of the Carabinieri recently jilted by his wife, must simultaneously deal with his personal crisis and the gang wars raging around Bari in the summer of 1992. The case is stalled until a Mafia member, suspected of killing the son of a rival mobster, decides to collaborate. While attempting to solve the mystery of the boy’s murder, Fenoglio is led into a world of deep moral ambiguity.

Arboreal Archaeology A conversation with Isabella Dalla Ragione In English

Isabella Dalla Ragione is known as “arboreal archaeologist”. Together with her father Livio she launched the Archeologia Arborea project, which led to thirty years of passionate research for old local varieties of fruit trees and more than a hundred and fifty ecotypes salvaged; an invaluable biological and cultural heritage was thus saved from being lost forever, and is currently available for study, reproduction and a new diffusion. In 2017, Isabella Dalla Ragione was awarded the Nonino Prize for her work with Archeologia Arborea.

Cover Revolution! is an exhibition, now touring Ireland, whose aim is to highlight how the work of Italian illustrators managed to reinvent the image of the major Italian publishers. The exhibition will feature figures by internationally acclaimed authors such as Lorenzo Mattotti, Franco Matticchio, Guido Scarabottolo, Gianluigi Toccafondo, Emiliano Ponzi and Olimpia Zagnoli. These artists stand out for their style and offer an example of the most interesting trends in contemporary publishing. The exhibition is curated by Melania Gazzotti.

Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts. On Culture Night, arts and cultural organisations and venues of all shapes and sizes, including the National Cultural Institutions, extend their opening hours to allow for increased access to the public. Their remarkable journey of hope begins. Ten years later, Rocco and Thabo, two young footballers, try to cross the desert to escape human trafficking and find Thabo’s family.

This groundbreaking anthology of poems and essays is a formidable resource that allowed English speakers to access and engage with previously untranslated contemporary Italian poetry. Luigi Ballerini is a writer, translator, and professor of Modern and Contemporary Italian Literature. He has edited several bilingual anthologies of Italian and American poetry.

I colori della ragione Performance on architect Franca Helg In Italian with English subtitles

Brought to life by Fondazione Albini, I colori della ragione is a theatrical performance dedicated to the architect Franca Helg, a great example of a free and empowered woman who made her way in a male dominated field. Throughout the play, music, words and movement shape a dimensional space gradually framed by the actress with a red thread. The performance includes photos and videos from the 1920s to recreate the political and cultural climate of the post war years.

In Diamante, a small town in Calabria, Southern Italy, three youngsters would like to shoot a movie. They decide to travel to Rome, where they meet Amelie, a French girl, who seems interested in their intent. She tells them she will mention it to Gerard, her fiancé, who actually turns out to be Gerard Depardieu, the renowned French actor.Could this be the turning point for them?

Although once denounced by the Vatican for supposed blasphemy, Dario Fo came to admire both Pope Francis and Francis of Assisi. The monologue, Francis the Holy Jester, is an act of homage to the saint, deftly translated into English by Mario Pirovano, actor and long-time collaborator with Fo, who will perform his own version of the work. The evening will be introduced by Prof. Joseph Farrell, whose updated biography of Fo and Rame will be published early next year.

Love is a net that traps our minds, but it’s not the only one. Vittoria learned to make fishing nets as a very young girl; now in her later years, she explains how we all “swim” in social expectations, toxic relationships and preconceptions. Florence is known all over the world as the culla del rinascimento. Yet, in the past three years something has changed. No more just the ‘cradle of the Renaissance’ nor a showcase for the contemporary, Florence is trying to function as a laboratory for the present. By clashing with the past, the city is breaking the glass dome still conserving the spell of the Renaissance like a fairy from an ancient tale. A conference dedicated to the memory of Mario Praz, thirty-five years after his death, to underline the importance of his legacy and to cast a light on the influence that his works still have on contemporary culture. In what ways are his works still relevant for comparative studies? Is it possible to find an echo of his thought in contemporary literary criticism? In his novel Il segreto di Pietramala, Andrea Moro, linguist, essayist and winner of the Flaiano Literary Prize 2018, explores the illusion of fictional languages. The linguist Elia Rameau is sent to Corsica on a special mission: he must collect data on the language spoken in the small mountain village of Pietramala. Once he reaches Pietramala, Rameau is suddenly confronted with unexplainable mysteries: why is the village uninhabited? Why have all the written traces of its language disappeared? Why are there no children’s graves?

St. Petersburg, 1860. A member of the Imperial family is assassinated. A few days later the writer Dostoevsky meets Gusiev, a young man being treated in a psychiatric hospital. Gusiev confesses that he is part of the terrorist group involved in the assassination and reveals that his comrades are planning to kill another of the Tsar’s relatives. Hounded by his creditors and plagued by frequent attacks of epilepsy, the writer spends his days dictating “The Gambler” to Anna, a young stenographer, while at night he goes on a desperate search for the terrorists, hoping to stop the attack.

Ernesto (“useless fifth wheel of the family”, in his father’s words) is a humble, honest everyman who moves from job to job as his country’s political and economic situation goes from bad to worse. In subsequent years, he determinedly searches for his calling as humorous experiences frame his life as a kindergarten cook, removalist and politician while his wacky family undergoes radical transformations. All the while, true historical events contextualise the eras, involving references to the likes of Aldo Moro, Socialist politician Bettino Craxi, and Silvio Berlusconi.

OUR COURSESOur courses are structured according to the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students not previously enrolled in the IIC who wish to follow a course at a higher level than A1.1 should take an assessment test (free of charge - by appointment only). Please call us on (01) 662 0509 or 662 1507 for further details or to set up an appointment.Level A1.1 is for total beginners and those students with a very basic knowledge of Italian. No test is necessary for this level.Our courses will help you develop speaking, reading and writing skills in a structured and gradual manner. Our teachers are Italian graduates with extensive experience and special qualifications in the teaching of Italian as a foreign language. Their enthusiasm and ability is known throughout Dublin and beyond. Our sincere hope is that not only will you enjoy learning the Italian language but that you will partake in our cultural activities and promotion of Italian culture. Our programme of events includes lectures, concerts, seminars, and exhibitions. They are presented with free admission whenever possible. It is our priority to offer our current students the possibility to continue with their classes. Specific seminars for special purposes (opera, book club, cinema, business, and drama) will be offered during the term.

BURSARIESThe IIC will make available a number of study grants from private language schools in Italy (generally covering a percentage of the fee for a short-term course) to students who would like to experience a language course in Italy.

TERMS & CONDITIONSPlease note that due to organizational and administrative reasons the following terms and conditions apply- Fees cannot be refunded or transferred from one term to another once a course has commenced; - Cancellations/Requests for refunds can only be accepted if made before the beginning of a course. The requests must be made in writing to the Director of the Institute and will be subject to a €50 administrative charge. - Please make sure that you will be able to attend the class you registered for on scheduled days/times.Class changes will only be allowed during the first week of the course. The IIC reserves the right to cancel a course if an adequate number of students is not reached and to alter the timetable where necessary.

Italian Language Courses

ENROLMENT OFFICE HOURSMonday to Thursday from 11am to 7pm - Friday from 11am to 3pm .

Each course consists of 15 lessons/30 hours. Each class lasts 2 hours, including a 10 minute break. Classes will have a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 15 students.

TEXTBOOKSOur language courses employ the Contatto, Nuovo Contatto, Nuovo Magari and Nuovo Progetto Italiano series of textbooks. Students will be advised of the correct textbook upon enrolment. Books can be purchased at International Books, 18 South Frederick St, D2. Our students can avail of a 10% discount on all textbooks.
