MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD CHAIR How did the summer fly by so quickly? September, in many ways, feels like the beginning of a new year. We will all remember the feelings we had when school started again, hopefully with new clothes, new scribblers and pencil crayons, a new teacher and maybe a new friend or two. For some the start of a new school year was met with eager anticipation, while for others the thought of the approaching school year was filled with apprehension.

Lucky for us those school days are behind us as we look forward to making decisions about what different and rewarding programs we can participate in at our Seniors’ Activity Centre. What activities will you choose—something new or something tried and true? At SAC there are an abundance of programs to choose from. For example, look for the class on how to digitally write and share your life stories. Want to get fit—there are exercise programs for all levels. How about learning to play the ukulele so you can make music while you sing along?Or perhaps you would like to investigate volunteering in one of the many positions available at our Centre. Our volunteers make a wonderful contribution to making the SAC such a warm and welcoming hive of activity. What about learning how to make specialty coffees like lattes, cappuccinos or London Fogs while serving as a barista at SAC’s Fireside Lounge? Volunteering at the cafeteria provides the chance to be part of a great team of SAC members. I hope you will think about ways to get involved this fall.Welcome back everyone, Lenore Rogers  Chair

MESSAGE FROM THE COMMUNITY RECREATION MANAGER Welcome back! I love September! I love the cozy days, the late fall sunshine and the friendships that blossom each fall as we start new activities and programs! Join us at the North Shore Seniors’ Health Expo—we have a line-up of incredible speakers and exhibitors. It is an amazing event and we look forward to sharing it with you. Also coming up this fall is PumpkinFest, West Vancouver Community Centres Society’s signature event

that attracts thousands of people to our Centre—it’s a lot of fun!Join us this fall for some new programs like Meditation, Klee Wyck Wood Carvers, Portraiture, Advanced Ukuleles, a gardening seminar on wild flowers or experience our personal training program. We have some great trips planned this fall such as our trip to Cultus Lake, Yarrow or Mount Baker. Check out the incredibly tasty menu Lou has planned this fall with a Ukrainian Dinner and Oktoberfest Dinner, both will be delicious! We have a great Centre and that is all thanks to the amazing volunteers who keep it running so well. Please take the time to say thanks to all of volunteers in the Garden Side Café, Fireside Coffee Bar & Lounge, behind the front desk, at SACs on 21st, our wonderful leaders outdoors and inside, our talented florists and gardeners and our amazing volunteers behind the scenes! We are so very fortunate to be surrounded by inspiring people all the time.We look forward to spending time with you this fall! Jill Lawlor Community Recreation Manager

We write on a range of topics each week and share our work with the group in a non-judgmental, support-ive environment. We share laughter, sadness, surprise and wonderment over the stories (fictional and true) we hear—and anything goes! If you, like some of us, have felt you couldn’t write and wanted to learn how to —come and join us! We meet on Mondays from 1 – 3 p.m. Drop by once to check it out, everyone welcome!

KEEPING CONNECTED PROGRAMS—

Are you wishing to live independently in your home for as long as you possibly can? A recent research study performed in West Vancouver by Dr. Dele Aytoli in 2016 has demonstrated that quality of life for aging adults increases significantly with participation in one or more Keeping Connected programs per week. We currently offer 20 interesting and relevant programs each week.

Our trained and caring staff team will meet with you and help you select a program or two that would be of interest to you. All of our participants are experiencing losses due to aging and the staff team will support you in overcoming these barriers to participation. We will pick up people in the neighbourhood and bring them to programs, and provide one-on-one volunteer support when needed. We also provide reminder phone calls about programs. If you or someone you know is struggling with a loss, or is isolated in their homes, these programs could be a great fit. Join us and you will meet new friends, learn new skills, stay strong in your body and mind and have fun!For information contact the outreach office, located inside the front doors of the SAC and ask for Joni, Judith or Carly. Please call 604-925-7211 to book an appoint-ment. Registration support is provided to all of our participants by Carly.

PURCHASE YOUR COFFEE PUNCH CARD TODAY! It’s convenient to use, and will spare you the hassle of looking for change. The punch card entitles you to six regular or large sized coffees* at the Fireside Lounge Coffee Bar and Lounge, or Garden Side Café. *We now have cards for both regular and large sized coffees.

Here’s another wonderful service offered by our West Vancouver

Seniors’ Activity Centre. The Shuttle Bus is, without a doubt, the most

convenient, reliable and comfortable method of transportation in

West Vancouver.

The Shuttle Bus will take you to and from the Seniors’ Activity Centre, calling at designated spots in West Vancouver. So, if you would like to meet a friend for lunch at Park Royal or browse around the shops in Ambleside or Dundarave just check the schedule on page 16 and you are on your way. Perhaps you have some books to return to the library—yes, the Shuttle Bus also stops there. Or, you could just enjoy the ride. There is no charge for the bus, although a $2 donation is suggested. Our caring, friendly drivers will also assist you with your walker and

shopping bags. Another bonus is that the bus will pick up at non- designated spots. Just watch for the coloured flag hanging from the side mirror, wave to the driver and he will pull in to the safest curb-side spot. It’s all so convenient. Riding the Shuttle is also a social event as most of the passengers are regular riders and have made friends of their fellow travellers. The drivers know the passengers by their first names and every rider is warmly welcomed on board. It’s a bit like sharing your own personal chauffeur with your friends.

If you have given up driving or are tired of looking for that elusive parking spot, why not try our very own Shuttle Bus? We guarantee you will be impressed and will soon be one of the group! We continue to be amazed at the variety of programs offered by our West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre and the Shuttle is just another example of the planning and creativity that makes our Centre so very special. Our thanks goes out to the volunteers, staff and passengers who make it all happen. Remember, getting there is half the fun!

THANK YOU FROM SACS ON 21STWe would like to express our thanks to you from everyone at SACS on 21st. Someone once said that “whatever we possess becomes of double value when we share it with others”.
