Because isocyanate ingredients are found in various concentrations inreactive materials produced by different manufacturers, it is imperativethat the material manufacturer’s MSDS or material information sheet beconsulted before using reactive material. Pay particular attention to thediscussion of material toxicity, health effects, and reactivity condition.

There are certain universal safety guidelines that should be followedwhen using any reactive material:

S Recommended processing temperatures must not be exceeded.

S When handling and using reactive material, always wear thermallyprotective gloves and long-sleeved clothing.

S Wear chemical goggles to reduce the potential of eye contact.

S Have eye washes available and provide a cold water source for burntreatment.

S The regular use of barrier cream for hands and face is recommendedfor skin protection.

S Do not eat, drink, smoke, or store food in working areas where PURmaterial is being processed.

S Wash hands thoroughly after working with reactive material.

S Remove hot melt material vapors using suitable extraction ventilationequipment.

S Use appropriate respiratory equipment where there is the danger ofinhaling isocyanate vapors or other ingredients contained in the PURmaterial in concentrations exceeding permissible limit values.

S In case of very high concentrations of harmful substances, or if youare unsure of the environmental conditions, respiratory protectiveequipment (operating independent of the surrounding air) must beused.

S Do not operate the unit with PUR materials if you are unsure that alladequate safety measures have been taken.

Nordson Series H-400 guns are used to apply thermoplastic hot meltadhesive to a product. Polyurethane-reactive (PUR) andhigh-temperature polyamide adhesives can negatively affect gunperformance and durability. The H-400 gun product line includes achoice of valve seat, single- and multi-module configurations, and a wideselection of nozzles. H-400 guns provide continuous operation andconsistent adhesive output, minimizing delays.

H-400 guns use resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) for precisetemperature sensing and control of gun temperature to within±0.5 °C (1.0 °F) of a setpoint temperature. Figure 1 shows a typicalSeries H-400 gun.

S The operating gun air pressure range is 3.4--5.5 bar (50--80 psi).

S The operating hydraulic pressure range is30--90 bar (450--1,300 psi).

NOTE: These pressure ranges are appropriate for mostpackaging and product assembly applications. However, if yourapplication requires operating at a hydraulic pressure below30 bar (450 psi), you may need to adjust the gun air pressure orthe gun module. Refer to the next section, H-400 Gun OperatingRange/Adjustment.

Preparing for Operation

Use these procedures to make adjustments that will allow you to operatean H-400 gun at a hydraulic pressure under 30 bar (450 psi).

To operate at a hydraulic pressure under 30 bar (450 psi), increase thegun air pressure. Refer to Table 1. This will allow you to operate at ahydraulic pressure as low as 14 bar (200 psi). If you cannot achieve gunair pressure above 3.4 bar (50 psi), go to the next procedure,Compensating for Low Gun Air Pressure.

If you have insufficient gun air pressure but are required to operate at ahydraulic pressure under 30 bar (450 psi), you must reduce the gunmodule spring tension. Because this adjustment is independent of thefactory-set stroke, the gun module operating speed and life will not beaffected.

WARNING: Risk of burns. Reducing the gun module springtension also reduces the maximum hydraulic pressure at whichthe module will self-relieve or free-flow. If the maximumhydraulic pressure is exceeded, the gun module will remainopen and dispense adhesive uncontrollably.

See Figure 7. To reduce the spring tension, loosen the locking nut (2)and turn the adjusting screw (1) counterclockwise in 1/2-turn increments. Each 1/2 turn reduces the hydraulic pressure capability by 7 bar (100 psi).Refer to Table 2.

A solenoid valve can be damaged if its voltage rating does not match theinput voltage from the power supply. Make sure the ratings match. Inaddition, make sure the solenoid valve meets high-temperaturespecifications. Table 3 lists solenoid valves suitable for use at servicetemperatures above 85 _C (185 _F). Table 4 provides data on theperformance of solenoid valves as tested in Nordson labs. Table 5 listssome important solenoid valve accessories.

Many solenoid valves are shipped with air mufflers that are used toreduce solenoid valve exhaust noise. If desired, you can use silencers.which provide extended service life, instead of air mufflers. Nordson alsooffers a quick-disconnect fitting that allows easy removal of a solenoidvalve and installation kits that allow you to use a 4-way valve as ahigh-speed 3-way valve. Use Table 5 to order air mufflers, silencers,quick-disconnect fittings, or installation kits. See Figure 24.
