Dogwood tree & the Resurrection: It is said the dogwood tree used to grow straight and tall, but after it was used as a crucifix for Christ, God made it short and twist-ed with a thin trunk so it could never be used as a cross again.

The dogwood bloom has four parts, each with a rusty red color on the end and a small hole, a reminder of where the nails were driven into the cross. The center stamens look like the crown of thorns.

Doctor’s Orders

Doctors are constantly faced with a challenging dilemma – death. How can we avoid it? We have faith in doctors to keep us alive through their wisdom – pre-scribing medicine, offering surgery, and finding cures. Our lives are prolonged because of their skills. On the flip side, quite often our deaths are prolonged as well. Without a doubt, it is a difficult tight rope to walk – prolonging life or pro-longing death? Gladly, there is a doctor who offers a helpful perspective on this situation. Colossians 4:14 states: “Luke, the be-loved physician, and Demas greet you.” Many people believe Paul (the author of Colossians) referenced Luke, the gospel writer, at the beginning of this verse. Hence, reading through the gospel of Luke is like following the Doctor’s Orders. Truly, the Doctor (Luke) gives us an eternal perspective on the topic of death – offering us relief in our dilemma. We learn that Jesus defeated death. Death no longer has the final say because Jesus rose from the grave. The tomb was empty that first Easter morning. The resurrection redefined life and now we are privi-leged to share new life with/in Christ. The 40 days of Lent (the preparation time leading to Easter) give us the opportunity to reconnect to this story, but more importantly, to reconnect with this awesome God we worship. Come and be reminded about the im-portance of the daily decisions you make. Come and reconnect with this God who loves you. Come and learn from the Doctor’s Orders – the one who taught us that death is not a challenging dilemma. Instead, it is simply the next step in our relationship with our loving God. Ready for my daily appointment with God, Pastor John

A retreat to empower adults & youth to study and appreciate the entire Bible by learning context, finding relevance, and recognizing God’s love story with humankind in every book.

Join us for this intense, six hour workshop as we walk (or run!) through the general content and historical con-

text of the entire Bible, address the barriers that keep many of us from feeling confident about reading scrip-

tures, and acquire resources and support for continuing our journey into God’s Word. This retreat is appropriate

for all levels of Biblical knowledge and doubt!

Using resources and techniques grounded in Methodist theology, we will gain knowledge and skills that will help

us access and appreciate every book of the Bible as an essential part of God’s love story with humankind.

The retreat will be facilitated by Jennifer McCluskey. Jennifer is a career educa-

tor, public speaker and Bible nerd who has a Master’s degree in Adult Education

from VCU and a degree in History from Washington & Lee University. Her back-

ground includes serving as a world history and geography teacher, Director of

Adult Ministries at Reveille UMC, and creator and facilitator of multiple adult Bi-

ble studies for over a decade. She is excited to come to Powhatan UMC to help

us grow in our discipleship and share what we learn with others.
