Setting Up Your
Google Analytics
Account.
An Easy Set-Up
Guide.
2
How to Open a Google Account – it’s FREE
Go to: www.google.com/accounts
Click on create account.
Google will walk you through the process of opening up an account, once you have one
you can use all of Google’s free applications including Gmail, AdWords, Google Analytics
and many more.
3
The next screen will ask you for your details and to create a password etc.…
Fill in the fields and you will be sent a verification email to your nominated account.
4
Once you’ve set up your Google Account, go to: analytics.google.com
Sign into your new Google account.
5
This is the first screen you will see…
Click on Sign Up .
6
Create an Analytics Account > General Information
Website’s URL: put in the address of your website
Account Name: Create a name for your account
Time Zone country or territory: where you live
Time Zone: for the time you operate in
Fill in the required fields:
7
Create an Analytics Account > Contact Information
Enter your contact information into the fields.
8
Create an Analytics Account > Terms & Conditions
You will then be taken to a page with your tracking code…
9
Create an Analytics Account > Tracking Code
You will find your tracking code under the ‘Admin tab’, ‘tracking info’, then ‘tracking
code’. Follow the links through to see this:
Google Analytics will automatically generate the tracking code for your website, this is the
code that will sit in the back of your website and ‘talk’ to Google, telling it your website
visitor information.
Can I update the tracking code myself?
YES:
If your site sits on a CMS (Content Management System) that you have access to and know how to
use.
NO:
If your web developer does all your website stuff for you - but it’s an easy ‘cut & paste’
job, so it shouldn’t cost much. Email the code above and instructions to your website
administrator. Once they have added this tracking code to your website, go to the
Analytics Settings page to find out if your website is being tracked and data is being
collected.
10
Create an Analytics Account > Tracking Code > Check Status
Once you've correctly installed your tracking code, you should allow up to 24 hours for
data to appear in your account. It may take this long for Google Analytics to ‘talk’ to your
website and connect with the code. Once that happens, you are tracking visitors to your
website.
To check the status of your tracking, go to the ‘Admin’ tab, then ‘tracking info’ and
‘tracking code’:
Your status should say ‘Receiving traffic’.
If it is not working check the useful ‘Help’ feature and it will explain the reasons why it may not be:
11
Google Analytics > Accessing your Reports
To view your reports, click on the ‘reporting’ tab.
I suggest you take some time to read through the Introduction to Audience Analysis, watch the videos
and go through the tutorials.
12
Google Analytics > Dashboard
The Dashboard is the overall view of your analytics account. It gives you the ‘big picture’
of your analytics for your web site. You can find the dashboard by clicking on the left
hand side menu bar.
This page will give you quite important information about your account. But do take a few
moments to play around and explore each of the buttons on the left hand side under
dashboard – these will give you a deeper dive into your site’s statistics and overall
performance.
In conclusion:
Google Analytics is a great way to see how your audience are using and finding your website. You can
find out their demographics and characteristics.
I highly suggest that you take some time to play with it, going through all the tabs and listening to the
tutorials as needed.
It is all very self-explanatory and the help functions are also a great resource to get you through.
