The Salute to FraminghamSeventeen years and counting...

Welcome to the Salute to Framingham, one of Framingham’s most anticipated annual events! Every year, we celebrate three individuals for their outstanding commitment and service to the youth of Framingham. This year’s honorees join a select group of people who have made a real difference in the lives of our children.

Over the past 17 years, the Salute program has been expanded to also show appreciation to teachers, school support personnel and volunteers who make each day “special” in the Framingham Public Schools. We also recognize graduating FHS students who have shown leadership in a variety of ways.

Since 2004, The Jim O’Connor Service Award has been awarded to individuals, organizations or families who have worked as a team to serve the youth of Framingham. Recipients exhibit the same passion, vision, commitment and leadership that Jim O’Conner, the Salute’s founder, exemplified throughout his career as Framingham High School’s Athletic Director.

Tonight, we will continue the successful multi-media presentations we debuted last year, including pre-recorded remarks from out honorees, a slide show of programs and activities that have benefited from the Salute’s fund-raising and highlights of each recognized student’s accomplishments. The much-anticipated “You Are Special” awards will continue in their popular form, and we will have a few live surprises!

The Salute to Framingham is the largest single fund-raiser for Framingham High School. All proceeds from tonight will be used to support activities, the arts and athletics which benefit FHS students.

Many thanks to all of you for being here tonight and to our community hosts and sponsors for making this evening a tremendous success.

Supporting the Arts, Activities and Athletics

In the spring of 2002, the Framingham Public Schools were facing substantial financial challenges. A group of Framingham High School parent organized the Framingham High School Foundation (FHSF) to ensure continuation of extracurricular activities, the arts and athletics regardless of imposed budgetary restrictions. Since its inception, the FHSF has successfully accomplished this mission through a variety of efforts, including building stronger alliances with the Metro West community, reaching out to FHS alumni, and applying for grants. Since 2003, FHSF has organized the Salute to Framingham Dinner. The Salute is the largest single annual fund-raiser for Framingham High School. As always, all proceeds from the event are used to benefit activities, the arts, and athletics which benefit FHS students.

Rev. Dr. J Anthony LloydRev. Dr. J Anthony Lloyd vividly remembers his first day in Framingham. It was Palm Sunday, April 12, 1992, and he was now officially the pastor of the Greater Framingham Community Church. “I remember the excitement in the air,” he recalled. At the time, the GFCC had been without a pastor for two years, and was moving from the Nobscot area to the South side on Hartford Street, with police escorts aiding the move. Since that time, in which the church has moved to a new location on Franklin Street, Rev. Lloyd has become an integral part of the Framingham community – both at the GFCC and through his involvement with other charitable endeavors, such as serving on the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs, working on initiatives for employment and for youth, and fighting homelessness. “I think there is a real sense of identity on people’s part on being from Framingham, and making Framingham what they believe it ought to be,” he said. “There is a healthy spirit of civic engagement. I’ve been impressed by the folks of Framingham to

recognize a commitment to give to others.”

Lou MerloniSince breaking into Major League Baseball with the Boston Red Sox and becoming an instant fan favorite, and now in his media career, Lou Merloni has often been referred to as “Framingham Lou”. The nickname fits because Lou has always been proud of his Framingham roots, and has been a generous donor to the Framingham High School Foundation. Born at Framingham Union Hospital on April 6, 1971, he has fond memories of growing up on the South side of town, and the close-knit bonds created with family and friends there. Traditions, such as eating Framingham Bakery pizza and spending time at Columbus Hall, became a part of daily life. “One of the biggest things that stands out to me about Framingham is the amount of support I’ve had, which started well before I got to the big leagues,” he said. Lou first learned how to play baseball on the diamonds of Framingham, where local coaches Henry Brandolini and the late Sully Tusoni had him on their C’s teams, which were a local dynasty. Lou and his wife, Steffanie, are currently in the process of moving to the Boston area. Lou’s stepdaughter, Kayla, is a freshman at

Arizona State.

Joe Shields, Esq.Joe Shields moved to Framingham in 1985 with his wife Peggy, and they’ve been here since. A defense attorney with an office in town who has represented youngsters in court for 20 years, and longtime coach in youth soccer, basketball and baseball, Joe quickly immersed himself into Framingham both professionally and personally. A native of Long Island, he’s come to appreciate living in Framingham. “It’s amazingly diverse, ethically, socially and economically,” he said. “All the different people in the area really make life interesting. In coaching, I see kids from all different backgrounds; it’s fun to interact with them.” Joe, a longtime sports fan who enjoys barbecuing, also teaches a Confirmation class at St. George’s. Joe’s wife, Peggy, has been a registered nurse at Newton-Wellesley Hospital for 25 years. His son, Dan, graduated

from Marian and attends the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Gail is patient, very accommodating and is always great with children. She wants every child to succeed. She does her best to make learning fun. Gail gives her students hope and encouragement and she always believes in them. She has a wonderful way with children always knowing what they need to be successful and ready, willing and able to go the extra mile for all her students. Gail Chancey, “You Are Special!”

ALISON LEMOINE COURCHESNE - is a born and raised product of Framingham and the Framingham Public Schools. She graduated from Framingham High School in 1999 and after completing her undergraduate degree at McGill University she was recruited by her former AP Literature teacher and she returned to teach English at the high school. In her short time with us she has made a significant impression. She has mentored a student through our Step-Up program, organized weekly Yoga classes for faculty held at the High School, she is the Model Congress advisor, and she founded the Poetry Slam. In just a few years, the Slam has grown from a class activity to a school event and now is one of the more popular community events for seniors and for the town. Last year, Ali spent the year in the Marshall Islands helping non-profits on the island coordinate services to better the conditions for the Marshallese. She kept a blog for her students and colleagues to stay abreast of her experiences on the island. She has a Masters degree from Middlebury and was recently accepted to Simmons in their Library Science program. Alison Courchesne, “You Are Special!”

DR. LORI DIGISI - has been a Literacy Specialist at Fuller Middle School for the past eight years. Lori is one of our most gifted professionals and part of our Leadership team. She has crafted our Language Arts goal for our school plan and leads our school-wide professional development program. Currently she is the Vice-President of the Massachusetts Reading Association and has been published in several professional journals. Her qualifications and experiences are impeccable and of the highest quality. She is very knowledgeable about learning and the literacy needs of our students. She has served in key leadership roles at the school, district, state and national levels. On a personal level, Lori’s energy is contagious. She deals with everyone, students and colleagues in an upbeat and positive fashion. We at Fuller value Lori because she is a terrific person, wonderful to work with and a great contributor. Lori always participates in all activities at the school. Whether in the student/staff basketball game, the annual variety show or the baseball game, she plays with the same enthusiasm as she teaches. Lori, thank you for all you do. Lori Digisi, “You Are Special!”

You Are Special

STEVE DRESSLER - is a wonderfully dedicated teacher at Stapleton Elementary School. He takes the time to get to know each of his students’ strengths and weaknesses to be better able to meet their needs. He is tuned into their individual needs and abilities, has a giving heart and a love of children. He has the ability to pull the positives out of each child. Steve is a patient man and also possesses a wonderful sense of humor. He makes learning fun for his students and they knew he is giving his all for them. Steve Dressler, “You Are Special!”

MELISSA DUNNET - There is one more certainty in life to add to death and taxes – and that is you can always count on a laugh and a smile from Melissa Dunnet of the Business Office. No matter how big or small your problem may be, Melissa is always there to help, and she does it with good humor and a willingness to go the extra distance to be helpful. She is never too busy to listen, and she will always return a phone call or an email looking for help. Her enthusiasm and positive outlook are infectious, so when you leave her office, you not only have solutions to your problems, but you also have a warm feeling inside that someone really does listen and care about you. Melissa, for all you do for all of us, we salute you and thank you for reminding us that we are all on the same team! Melissa Dunnet, “You Are Special!”

BILL FALLER - is completing his 8th very successful year as a 7th grade Science teacher at Fuller Middle School. During these eight years, he has dedicated himself to the students at Fuller both in and out of the classroom. From a student’s perspective, Mr. Faller is that special kind of teacher that all student’s dream of having. Because of his engaging manner and knowledge of the subject, he is able to make complex learning tasks easy and enjoyable. Classroom management, a positive learning environment, effective learning techniques, and high student expectations are some of his many strengths. However his ability to interact with the students with humor is his greatest gift. While maintaining his professionalism, he is comfortable with this very important student-teacher interaction. Mr. Faller is one of the stars in Fuller’s Yearly Staff Variety show. Mr. Faller “brought the house down” again this year as evidenced by the students constantly calling his name from the audience. Mr. Faller is a trusted, and well-respected member of the Fuller community. He is steady, humble, and outrageously funny. For these reasons, and so many more, Bill Faller, “You Are Special!”

You Are Special

JAE GOODWIN - You are a committed professional who is passionate about literacy. From your initial association with Dunning as a parent, you became hooked on teaching. You worked as an instructional aide, did your student teaching, and then became a 5th grade teacher - all at the Dunning School. You have been, and are, a mentor for new teachers. You are an Adjunct Instructor at Framingham State College and have taught courses for the Town of Framingham. You have run professional development days, served three terms on the School Improvement Council, and have been a mentor on the Taskstream Leadership Committee. Your achievements as a professional are not confined to the adult world. Several years ago your students won the nationwide Learning National Book Challenge for a book of poetry. Another class was recognized as the grand prize runner-up in the Harper Collins poetry contest. Four years ago you won the Hewlett Packard Writing Contest for teachers and you persuaded the PTO to enable authors to be brought into the Dunning school each year. You hold an annual read-a-thon to benefit the Jimmy Fund, this year raising over $1,700.00. You have written grants to enhance learning in the classroom. The latest grant received funding to support a mimio interactive whiteboard in two classrooms at Dunning. Thank you for all these contributions you have, and continue to make for our school, our students, our teachers and our community. Jae Goodwin, “You Are Special!”

KATHY KENNEY-MARSHALL - began teaching at McCarthy Elementary School in 1991 and has distinguished herself as a dedicated, involved, and talented educator since that time. To promote McCarthy’s literary arts theme within the school and the entire community, Kathy secured a grant from Starbucks and established the school’s first student literary magazine entitled Little Kids, Big Words. She has worked tirelessly with students, staff, and parents to annually publish and distribute this magazine. Students are eager to submit their entries and many have published their written work in other anthologies. To provide students with an opportunity to read their original work in a public forum, she initiated an Evening of Poetry at the school and student poetry readings at Barnes and Noble. She also assists with the after school drama club, H.A.A.M, Hilarious Acting At McCarthy, and, along with her third grade colleagues, prepared and presented a “March Through History,” a historical walking tour of Framingham’s Musterfield. Kathy is a published author. Her poetry appears in six children’s anthologies for Meadowbrook Press, and she co-authored a recently released book entitled, What Women Don’t Know About Middle Age. Kathy Kenney-Marshall, “You Are Special!”

CAREY LYDDY - There are many teachers in a school who give one hundred percent of their time and effort and Carey Lyddy does just that and more. She is a unique educator. Carey is the type of person who gives each child individual attention and truly differentiates instruction for every one of her students. From working one-on-one with a sixth grade student, to small support groups, to instructing an inclusion class, Carey provides all students with a quality education. She is a special education teacher who makes every student feel unique. When Barak Obama says, “Yes, we can”, Carey Lyddy echoes, “Yes, we do!” From staff members to parents, people sing her praises. She has a gentle way about her but she encourages all students to reach their full educational potential and she supports their emotional well- being. She makes the material understandable and students feel successful. Her organizational skills are remarkable and she is able to deliver this skill to students. She can find each child’s strength and knows how to motivate all her students to achieve their full potential. She trains other teachers in writing IEPs, in administering educational tests, in being a strong co-teacher, and in running a caring classroom. She is the consummate professional who is always trying to better her skills. She showers students with respect. She is a problem solver, has a positive outlook, conscientiously performs all her responsibilities, and is a marvel at understanding scheduling. Teachers look up to her for suggestions and students turn to her for assistance. Parents praise her willingness to communicate with them and the marvelous job she does in educating their children. Carey has the natural ability to teach and she does it to perfection every day. Carey Lyddy, “You Are Special!”

JANICE PISANO - is currently a one-to-one aide at the Walsh Middle School. Janice works closely with a wonderful sixth grader by the name of Jordan on a daily basis. Janice is willing to take on any task that will support and benefit Jordan. She helped Jordan to decorate her own space and make it feel safe and secure when Jordan needs a place to relax. Janice is a tremendous asset to Jordan and the entire Walsh community. Janice is incredibly dependable, capable, patient, kind and helpful. Over the past few years Janice has made similar, significant differences in the lives of many students at Walsh. Janice is indeed very special to Jordan and the entire Walsh Community. You Are SpecialJANE SHAPIRO - You have always shown the capacity to make students feel good about themselves, especially those who may have needed a little extra TLC, and have encouraged them to believe in themselves and their potential to be successful. Your impact is validated by the numerous cards, letters, and personal visits you receive from former students who wish to share how you made a difference in their lives. You have been recognized by the Care and Share program for representing the only school in the entire Metro West area that successfully collects foods items for the local food pantry each and every month, a program that you yourself began at our school. You envisioned a daily Morning Announcements program which you then developed and now coordinate for the school. You initiated the 5th Grade Science Fair held for many years at Dunning. You brought the New England Math League Contest to Dunning and you created the beautiful Fond Farewell Awards ceremony that is held in June for the departing 5th grade students. Thank you for all these contributions you have, and continue to make for our school, our students, and our community. Jane Shapiro, “You Are Special!”

MARK SPILLANE - is a committed educator who epitomizes the true meaning of ‘teacher’. On a daily basis as an ESL teacher at Framingham High, he develops positive relationships and a sense of trust with his students and colleagues. He knows his students as individuals with unique problems and issues as immigrants to the United States, who are adapting to a new country and culture. Mark motivates his students to excel and reach their goals. Mark’s pleasant and easy-going personality lends itself to his success at Framingham High School. As a co-advisor to the International Club, Mark respects the cultural richness of his students’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds and conducts on-going dialogue with them to bring about a sense of understanding and sensitivity. Mark, along with the ESL and World Language departments coordinated the very successful Cultural Pride Day last year and the Mix it Up day for the past few years. Both events were very well organized and attended by the whole high school community. Mark is always available on a moment’s notice to pitch in a new idea, follow through on an old one, speak to parents at a night meeting, help a fellow colleague in need and be an all-around team player. Mark Spillane, “You Are Special!”

VIRGINIA TONER - You are a veteran of the Framingham Public Schools: a professional who has taught for 26 years, 24 in the English as a Second Language program. Your work as an ESL instructor pre-dates your association with our community. You have taught ESL to adults in Cambridge, MA, in Venezuela, and you served as a Vista volunteer in Puerto Rico. At Dunning School you are now a 4th grade teacher. Over the past 5 years you have organized and run the Multicultural Day at school. You served for 2 years on the School council; you have been on the Social Committee and Faculty Advisory Committee. You have been a workshop member on “Through the Looking Glass,” a multicultural activity guide for two years. As a member of the Mass Association of Bilingual Teachers, you were a conference presenter on teaching language arts in conjunction with math and have led a summer workshop on ESL concerns for teaching the Everyday Math curriculum. You were a conference presenter on professional certification for ESL teachers in conjunction with the Political Concerns Committee of MATSOL, the Mass Association of Teachers of Second Language. And you have worked with the communities of Boston, Brookline, and Framingham to develop a standards-based writing curriculum of biographies and autobiographies for English Language Learners (ELL’s). Thank you for all these contributions you have, and continue to make for our school, our students, and our community. Ginny Toner, “You Are Special!”

The Creative Arts Council of FraminghamSince the mid-1970’s, the Creative Arts Council of Framingham has been enriching the lives of students in the Framingham Public Schools by bringing superior, age-appropriate arts programming into the schools. For over 30 years the Creative Arts Council of Framingham has made it a priority to expose Framingham students to performances by exceptional artists from across a wide range of artistic disciplines. The Committee believes that by providing a diverse series of high quality live programs, the imagination of every child will be captured at least once, exposing him or her to an art form that is involving, interesting, and fun. To that end, parent volunteers review programs at showcases, at in-school presentations and performances, and at other venues. They share information with other parents throughout the district at regular monthly meetings while scheduling programs in their own schools and coordinating and sponsoring district-wide programs. The Creative Arts Council of Framingham recognizes the arts as an essential part of a strong educational system: expanding curriculum, building bridges across cultures, shedding light on our past and shaping our future.
