System Internal Network

I 1 Network : Domain-to-SC management network. Domains A–R communicates with theSC over this network. This network is internal to the platform and does not requirecabling. By default, IP forwarding on the I1 network is disabled. Forwarding should not beenabled.

I 2 Network : SC-to-SC management network. Each SC communicates with the other overthis network. There is no domain traffic on this network. This network is internal tothe platform and does not require cabling. By default, IP forwarding on the I2network is disabled. Forwarding should not be enabled.

C x Network : External customer-provided network for access to the SC and domains A–R.Each C network represents a user community, which might or might not share networktraffic. Cabling, network equipment, and domain-side interface cards must beprovided by the customer. Additionally, each C network cabled to the SC has a logical IPaddress. This address is logical and does not require cabling.

Note: I1 network - IPv4 must be used on the I1 network if network installation/bootingdomains across I1 are required.

C x network- A maximum of two user communities can be cabled to the SC. Thisrestriction does not apply to domains.

System Controller & System Boards

System Controller

The system controller is the heart of the Sun Fire E25K/E20K systems availability andserviceability technology. It configures the system; coordinates the boot process; sets up thedynamic system domains; monitors the system environmental sensors; and handles errordetection, diagnosis, and recovery. Two System Control boards are configured into thesystem to provide redundancy and automatic failover in the event that one board fails

A small system called the system controller (SC) manages the Sun Fire systems. The SC isresponsible for all of the functions required to test, configure, and boot domains. It suppliesall system clocks and virtual TOD clocks for the domains and monitors power andenvironmental status. It also provides domain control with virtual key switches and consoleconnections for each domain.

Testing and Configuration

Upon power on or a reset, the SC runs a self test called SCPOST. It then starts theplatform management software.

The SC configures and coordinates the initialization, testing, and boot processes. After a system failure, and when the virtual key switch of a domain is turned on, theSC powers on the system components associated with the domain and runs SPOSTfor the domain. SPOST controls the running of LPOST and IPOST. LPOST tests theCPU/Memory boards, I/O boards, and the system interconnect. IPOST tests the PCIcontrollers. The SC then configures the domain based on the components that passthe tests and starts the boot sequence.

Page 7: SF 20K Diagram and Installation Procedure

Environmental Monitoring

The SC monitors the following conditions:

• Voltage, current, and temperatures for power supplies• Voltage and temperatures for all system boards and processors• Temperatures of ASICS• Fan status and speed

If safe thresholds are exceeded, the SC shuts down components to prevent damageto the system.

System Administration and Maintenance

The SC provides access for platform and domain administration. Access to the SC isby the included RS-232 serial connection or by network connection.

Tasks performed at the platform level are:

• SC setup and configuration• Allocation of system resources for domains• Domain creation• Status display of all domains• Power control for all system components• Logical enable and disable of components• Individual CPU/Memory board tests• Component and environmental status display• Platform error message administration• Platform password setup (Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800/3800 systems)• Platform and Domain Security configuration (Sun Fire 15K/12K systems)

Tasks performed at the domain level are:

• Power and boot control• Domain status display• Logical domain component enable and disable• Individual CPU/Memory board tests• Domain error message administration

Redundant System Components

All systems in the Sun Fire system product line can be configured with redundantcomponents. The ability to run with a subset of configured components increasesavailability of the system. As long as one processor with memory and one I/O module arefunctional, the system can run.

Page 8: SF 20K Diagram and Installation Procedure

If the system is configured with redundant connections to storage and network, the accesscan be maintained using these alternate paths.

Redundant components include:

• CPU/Memory boards• I/O modules• PCI cards• System Controller boards• Sun™ Fireplane interconnect (Sun Fire 15K/12K systems)• Fan trays• Power supplies

CPU/Memory Boards

The CPU/Memory board holds four CPUs. Each CPU has an associated memory subsystemof eight DIMMs, so memory bandwidth and capacity are both scaled up as CPUs are added. The memory capacity of the board is 64 Gbytes using 2-Gbyte DIMMs. The maximummemory bandwidth inside a board is 9.6 Gbyte/sec. The CPU/Memory board has a 4.8Gbyte/sec connection to the rest of the system.

I/O Boards

The Sun Fire E25K/E20K hot-swap PCI assembly architecture has two I/O controllers. Eachcontroller provides one 33-MHz peripheral component interconnect (PCI) bus and three33/66 MHz PCI buses for a total of four on each I/O board. Therefore, each I/O assembly haseight hot-swap component PCI slots. A Sun Fire I/O board has a 2.4 Gbyte/sec connection tothe rest of the system.

Peripherals

The Sun Fire E25K/E20K cabinet does not have room for peripherals, with the exception ofthe system controller peripherals (CD-ROM, digital audio tape (DAT) drive, and hard drive). However, more peripheral devices can be configured inadditional peripheral expansion racks.

Domain Preparation:

On the MAIN system controller

Jumpstart Installation Steps:

1) After configuring I1 through smsconfig, you should have an updated/etc/hostswith all the domain I1 Ip addresses

10.1.1.2 domA-I1-name #smsconfig-entry#10.1.1.3 domB-I1-name #smsconfig-entry#

2) Edit /etc/ethers and add ethernet adress of domain A followed by itsI1 hostname

0:0: be: a8:4:97 domA-I1-name

3) Insert the Solaris 9, CD 1 of 2.

4) # cd /cdrom/cdrom0/s0/Solaris_9/Tools

5) #. /setup_install_server /export/install

6) # cd /

7) Eject CD 1 of 2 and insert CD 2 of 2

8) # cd /cdrom/cdrom0/Solaris_9/Tools

9) #. /add_to_install_server /export/install

10) # mkdir /jumpstart

11) # cp -r /export/install/Solaris_9/Misc/jumpstart_sample/* /jumpstart

NOTE: This copies many files including a generic any_machine to /jumpstart. This is thefile that is considered the "profile". This file will tell the install what to load on the client. For example: what cluster, how to partition the drive etc.... You can go in and change this fileto fit your needs. Refer to the "Solaris 9 Advanced Installation Guide" for correct syntax.

12) Create sysidcfg

# vi /jumpstart/sysidcfg Make sure to enter your domain I1 Ip address and netmaskExample: (yours may differ)

Page 20: SF 20K Diagram and Installation Procedure

network_interface=eri0 {ip_address=10.1.1.2netmask=255.255.255.224 protocol_ipv6=no}system_locale=Ctimezone=METterminal=dttermtimeserver=localhostsecurity_policy=NONEname_service=NONEroot_password="whatyouwant"

NOTE: Whatever netmask you use, it must match in:/jumpstart/sysidcfg/etc/netmasks/export/install/Solaris_8/Tools/Boot/netmaskifconfig -a

13) Update the rules file

# vi /jumpstart/rulesExample: As the domain is going to boot from the internal network, it is going to take asnodename DomA-I1-name.Most customers would like instead the domain to take as nodename its external hostname(domA-I1-name).That's why we need here to create a finish script for each domain we're going to install. Also,we'll use this finish script to setup hme0, dman, gateway, properly

comment out everything in that file but the last line:hostname domA-I1-name - any_machine Ipconfig.ksh

14) # cd /jumpstart

Create the finish script Ipconfig.ksh

For example#!/usr/bin/ksh## Configuration Finish Script for domainA# ETCDIR=/a/etcINTERNALIP="10.1.1.2"EXTERNALIP="10.16.30.119"GATEWAYIP="10.16.30.1"NODENAME="domA-pub-name"INTERNAME="domA-I1-name"

# Create /etc/notrouter & /etc/defaulrouter

Page 21: SF 20K Diagram and Installation Procedure

touch $ETCDIR/notrouter

echo $GATEWAYIP > $ETCDIR/defaultrouter

# Create /etc/hostname.dman0

echo "$INTERNALIP netmask + broadcast + private up" >

# Create /etc/hostname.hme0 $ETCDIR/hostname.dman0

echo "$NODENAME" > $ETCDIR/hostname.hme0

# Delete /etc/hostname.eri0

rm $ETCDIR/hostname.eri0

# Modify /etc/nodename, /etc/net/*/hosts

sed "s/$INTERNAME/$NODENAME/g" $ETCDIR/nodename > /tmp/.nodename

cp /tmp/.nodename $ETCDIR/nodename

sed "s/$INTERNAME/$NODENAME/g" $ETCDIR/net/ticlts/hosts > /tmp/.hostfilecp /tmp/.hostfile $ETCDIR/net/ticlts/hostscp /tmp/.hostfile $ETCDIR/net/ticots/hostscp /tmp/.hostfile $ETCDIR/net/ticotsord/hosts

# Modify /etc/hostscat >> /tmp/.hosts <<EOF# Internet host table#127.0.0.1 localhost

SAM-QFS

Introduction: SAMQFS is the filesystem implemented for data archiving and for highperformance given the nature of data. The SAMQFS filesystem will be NFS shared to thenodes in the Grid. As part of the storage solution, a Sun Storedge 6320 is deployed that willbe used among other things, as a data storage for the Grid. There will be 2 x L25 tape libraryin the solution which will be used for SAMFS archival as well separately for Netbackupimplementation.
