The first couple of meetings have kicked off our new season well and we were pleased to welcome several prospective new members and visitors.

The web site is now fully updated and photo-active with some of last years winning shots. At present these are limited to pdi's but if you care to email jpg's of your successful prints, we can add those too. The web also has more local photo links.

Club subscriptions for the new season are now due and are unchanged at £25 per person. Karen will be pleased to receive cash or cheques (payable to Shaftesbury Camera Club) at the next meeting. Please note that only paid-up members can enter competitions! Saxons at the top of Gold Hill now keep printed copies of our programme – please tell your friends!

Recent Meetings:Leo Rich ARPS was our guest speaker last Thursday evening with the title of “Ramblings with the Idle Rich”. A good turn-out heard Leo explain there is far more to photography than just continually looking for a competition-winning shot. Starting with our own neighbourhood, he showed there are often better and more interesting wildlife opportunities than you might find in some of the more exotic places where people visit in search of that unique picture.

However Leo travels extensively and showed how even routine shots of everyday life can tell a compelling story when viewed in a more complete context. His travels to Turkey, Chile, Cuba and India included some wonderful portraits that together with added detail about them, their locality and their changes during successive visits made for a very enjoyable evening.

Our first meeting of the season was a social event with wine and nibbles to welcome old members, new ones, and several visitors. Bill Norman gave an overview of our forthcoming talks and competitions. The competitions will include internal ones (including a “Ladies v. Gents”) as well as several challenges against neighbouring clubs. There was also interest in some possible extras to the published programme with hands-on workshops and visits.

Brian Tarling will lead a club visit encompassing afternoon and evening low light photography on either the 15th or 22nd October depending on weather forecasts. More details and ex-pressions of interest please during our next meeting when Brian will give a short introduction to low light techniques. This could be a really great experience!

First round of Photographer of the Year Competition, 27th October. Our judge for this will be Martin Edge and the subject is open. There are three classes: members can enter up to two images in each class... small prints (image less than 7.5 x 5 inches), large prints and pdi's. Prints should be mounted and titles given to Helen (Tel 01963 370900 or [email protected]) by Tuesday beforehand. PDI's (1400x1050 and named 01_title.jpg) to Chris on same email address. See web for full details.

Preparing images for Competitions: Projecting your PDI's: A hands-on workshop on how to resize, name and email your jpg's using Windows or Macs, free programmes or Photoshop family. We will also demonstrate the capabilities of the projector and how to best prepare im-ages for projecting with our competition software. We are planning an extra Thursday work-shop either in Buckhorn Weston or Shaftesbury, depending on numbers. Helen will co-ordin-ate everyone's potential interest to firm up dates and venue.

WELCOME again to the season. The weather is turning fresh now and the lighting and autumnal colours will de-light those photographers who can brave the outside world with the change in temperature.

Our ‘in house’ critique evening was a great success with input from our members who became very vocal and active.Viewing and discussing members’ images with the more experienced photographers giving helpful comments and suggestions was an excellent idea. We all gleaned a great deal and will now be able to improve our prints and digital images.

1st PY Photographer of the Year competition was judged by Martin Edge from Wimborne who is an underwater photographer. He is one of the very few pro-fessionals globaly specializing in underwater which provides him with a unique market for his books and photos. The outcome of Martin’s judging was as follows: Small print winner was Aga Sandrowicz with 'Old Harry Rocks'. Large print winners were Norman Good with ‘Latch’, Rob Howard with ‘Sombrero’ & ‘Sand, Shadows, Spots and Stripes’ and Brian Tarling with ‘Reflecting on Sydney’ - all produced some excellent work. The winners of the PDI section receiving top marks were Brian Tarling with 'Blea Tarn', David Townley with 'Acer', Bill Norman with 'Towards Sunset', Aga Sandrowicz with 'Speed of Light', Norman Good with 'The Gardener' and Rob Howard with 'Hand on Henge'. Wonderful selection of PDIs – keep it up but don’t forget prints either!

Programme Changes: Please note that the 24th November meeting will now be a practical even-ing with Brian Tarling, so bring your cameras (and tripods if you have one). Brian will be describing techniques needed for taking studio portraits using equipment which most of us have in our homes. It is hoped a selection of models will be on hand – sounds exciting! This replaces Sid Jones who will now be with us on the 1st March talking about “My Favourite Pictures”. This means that the Members Evening with their presentations will now be 23rd February, one week earlier than previously sched-uled. The downloadable programmes and other information on our web site will be updated in a few days time.

Finally, please remember our raffle at the next meeting – can you find a suitable prize to donate? We hope it’s not too late to remind you all to try and get some firework photos this weekend for our future “low light” competition!

Looking ahead

• Bonfire Night – Please try some night shots for our future competition against Wincanton.

• Raffle prizes needed for Thursday 10th November – please see what you can bring. Any sur-plus prizes will be carried forward for the Christmas Soiree raffle.

• Remember your cameras – and tripods on Thursday 24th November

As the first half of our season draws to a close, we would like to welcome all those who have joined us since September. We hope you already feel at home in the club and if you have any questions, suggestions, or comments please do let one of the committee know. We will shortly have a “rogues gallery” on the notice board so you can identify the committee.

Now Christmas is approaching fast, our December meetings should help get us in the festive mood. Our 1st December meeting will be a fun competition between the Ladies and the Gents. As it is the first time we're run such a competition, we're not sure of all the pitfalls but we have a full list of entries, an excellent external judge in Jackie Poynter and we already know there will be some good natured rivalry!

The second December meeting on the 15th is our annual social event where we hope to welcome not only our reg-ular members but also partners, past members and other photographic friends. There will be the “Champagne Challenge” where all members are asked to bring one print so everyone can vote using 50p coins for their fa-vorites. The winner gets a bottle of bubbly from the Chairman and the club gets the 50p's! There will also be a raffle with excellent prizes and light refreshments.

Our November meetings both had a practical slant with an introductory session on Audio-Visual presentations and a practical session on Portraiture.

Jim Eastaugh from Wincanton Camera Club introduced us to PicturesToExe with a simple on-screen how-to-do-it approach. Those of us who have never contemplated attempting AV at least now know where to begin and what can be done. This software made synchronisation of images and audio tracks very intuitive and Jim also showed how he used Audacity, a free open source pro-gramme, to edit sound tracks. After the break Jim showed us an excellent example of his own work featur-ing spring flowers in the French Alps. David, our chair-man, showed a presentation he had created using Pro Show Gold as a record of an Berwick Amateur Dramatic production. As a third alternative, Karen introduced the process available with Microsoft Windows, Movie Maker. Details of the programmes we discussed are now on our website filed under News.

Brian Tarling gave us some ideas on how to make portraits using ready-to-hand accessories for both back-drops and lighting. He gave tips on how to make your subject relax so that a session was suc-cessful for both the photographer as well as the subject. Brian demonstrated his techniques on David and other Committee members before introducing Chris, a local young hairdresser, who he had per-suaded to come along as a model. After the break, many of us participated with our own cameras and it will be interesting to see the results at a later meeting. In particular, we ask members who

Brian's judging was descriptive and helpful with ideas for composition giving top marks in the Small Prints to Karen Green for 'Chasing the Photograph', seconded by Jeremy Jones with 'Reflections'. Peter Wright commented Water being a hard enough subject to photograph and the judging even harder! Large Print winner was Rob Howard with 'WWW' and five members came second with their prints. The PDIs produced a very good selection for Peter Wright to judge - an excellent usage of Water and more imagination. The PDI winner was Andy Newton with 'Hastings Storm' and again five members came second. Peter involved members to comment after he had announced the mark which was helpful to the authors. He wished us good luck and advised us to concentrate on the competition and let the camera take the photo! Southern Federation of Photographers produced some stunning photographs in the Salisbury Library, we hope you were able to visit and choose your „perfect picture‟. There were a few very good „water‟ photographs which should have been of interest to our members! A very successful evening for all members to participate in the selection of prints and PDIs for the coming external competitions, which Brian Tarling was on hand to offer his critical and helpful observations and make the final choices. This proved to be extremely helpful to members of various stages of their photography. Photo Clippings...

Our friendly competition with Fordingbridge at home on 9th

February (subject ‘Open’) was judged by Bill Aven LRPS who was very complimentary towards the excellent photography he was presented with. This was the first time we have hosted an inter-club friendly, and we trust we gave Fordingbridge and our judge a warm welcome. After defeating us soundly with their stunning prints (including two 10′s), our PDI’s fared slightly better by only losing this section by 6 marks even though Fordingbridge scored five 10′s. Overall, we lost by twenty one points but we should certainly not be discouraged as Fordingbridge are a well established club with a long string of exhibition successes. They are organised into “General” and “Advanced” sections so they are not used to taking prisoners, with most of their entries by members sporting RPS and other awards after their name. Their prints were bitingly sharp and benefited from most being professionally printed and taken with full or half frame cameras. They also showed skillful and very artistic use of photoshop. The fact that the evening got chillier was not due to us losing but the white covering of snow that fell during the evening, and we hope they and our judge all got home safely.

The brave members who gave a short PDI or Audio Visual presentation on 23

rd February showing their favourite images were

very well received - producing a successful evening where much was gleaned. David Townley showed a wonderfully sharp video from his camera of a Sparrowhawk enjoying a pigeon in his hedge – an ornithologist’s delight. He followed with an audio visual of an Expedition on the Glacial Express around Europe with Pauline using the Proshow Gold application which was excellently arranged and finishing with the InstaDicky accessory which gave us an humorous insight of how to insert a focal point to a boring picture!

Karen Green presented a selection of images which she had manipulated into more favourable pictures and confidently answered questions about her ‘hide’ in the garden and how to build one. Brian Tarling created ‘Up Up and Away’, processing a selection of shots showing a Hot Air Balloon lift off and flight to give us a sense of freedom, followed by some aerial photography over Dorset showing various angles and acrobatics done in a Tiger Moth and another light aircraft. Brian then showed a collation of an interesting and at times exciting journey he pursued by himself around West North America. Brian ended with a night video of ‘Fairies’ at Kingston Lacey. Brian found using the Windows 7 “Windows Live Movie Maker”

1 very enlightening for his new

visual adventures - sighs from the rest of us of ‘why didn’t I do something like that’.

PLEASE NOTE WE HAVE THREE SESSIONS IN MARCH – Thursday 1st March being an excellent evening with out guest speaker Sid Jones.

Other news:-

• Antony Blake, our scheduled speaker for 22nd

March, is unfortunately unwell and so will not be able to join us. However Bill is making alternative arrangements which we will post on the web as soon as possible. We hope Antony will be able to come at another time and we wise him a speedy recovery.

We invited Sid Jones a landscape and wedding photographer and an active member of the Dorchester Camera Club to give an illustrated talk entitled "A Brief History of Photography" whereupon he looked at some of the pioneers of a creative process we all now take for granted. Showing us the first ever photograph in 1827 using a camera obscure by the Frenchman Joseph Niepce; then in 1838 Louis Dageurre who put the solution behind the lens creating the Daguerre-type which could only produce one photo at a time - the French were so impressed they gave him a pension for life – the Daguerre-type became popular in the USA. Then in 1839 our very own William Henry Fox-Talbot copied the French invention. After 1890 photography became people‟s so everyone took photos. This all came about when Sid retired and wanted to learn more about the history so took „A‟ level theory of photography at night school feeding his love of history and early times. He also talked about seminal photographers of the 20th Century including Ansel Adams who travelled as a concert pianist but spied digital photograph - always composing his pictures in the frame and never cropping - using the zone system and working in colour and advertising. Cartier-Bresson a frustrated artist who did not want to be a photographer, nevertheless his pictures were natural and enjoyed by people and Elliot Erwitt among others. The evening was completed by Sid Jones showing some of his own photographs taken around the world; Spring in New Zealand – capturing light and emotion, experimenting on moving his camera, clear and colourful pictures of the Dorset coast – always using a tripod. Exquisite night shots in Ireland of landscape and of Singapore and some cloning with an Eagle using 400 F 5.6 lens. Amusing and informative evening with a very good humoured Sid.

Shaftesbury Camera Club invited Anne Mahany ARPS to judge our Competition with Gillingham Camera Club at home and the subject was 'Water'. Not everyone‟s favourite subject and very difficult to judge, but Anne gave some good marks and authors gleaned new ideas and seemed happy with the outcome. Gillingham scored 86 to our 84 in the prints but we scored 85 to their 81.5 in the PDIs. Well done Shaftesbury in their 1.5 lead – we hope to return the competition next year at Gillingham. One 10 in the Prints was Norman Good's Wavering Reeds, 9s for Chris Wildey and David Lampard. Gillingham had one 9.5 and one 9. In the PDIs Gillingham had a 10 and a 9 while Bill Norman and Rob scored 9.5 and Jenny Jones got 9. Peter May of Gillingham thanked Shaftesbury for the evening which was very amicable and entertaining. Sadly Anthony Blake was not able to show us his atmospheric sunrises and sunsets – especially the Jurassic coast. So Penny Piddock AFIAP DPAGB was invited from Dorchester to present a fascinating talk on her favourite subject 'What is creative photography'? Penny is also a judge and has known a wealth of famous photographers, whereupon she shared their pictures with us. The fun loving Penny with her creative mind started researching creative photography - making a personal statement, by altering reality she emphasises the reality and the photograph. She has travelled through various ideas and beliefs of the USA and Australia. Penny quizzed us over a few photos regarding what section they should be placed - creativeness, deciding whether photo journalism should be spontaneous, and whether travel and nature should be reality based? She recreates reality explaining how her underwater prints were made by joining two pictures together forming a complete picture. To help us prepare for her talk, she provided us with this image to experiment with. So members brought in some of their creations of Penny's original Transformer photograph and

Our last Newsletter of the second year of the Club. We wish you all a happy summer and look forward to the new season in September with members old and new members. All at the Camera Club send their sincere condolences to Eileen Slamaker and will remember Chris as a very supportive member who helped us get established and obviously enjoyed his photography. We were very pleased to have him join us for the short time that he was able to Our wishes also go to Kelvin who will be in Salisbury and we look forward to seeing him in September

The Competition away with Wincanton on the subject of ‘Low Light Outdoors’ was very successful for Shaftesbury who won by one mark. Brian Tarling on a ‘Low light shoot’ on Easter Friday 6

th April.

Members met at the Asda car park in West Quay Road, Poole, at 1830 – sunset at 1946 – full moon rise 1955. Karen and Chris met at the Asda car park at the appointed time of 1830 to find themselves well outnumbered with around a dozen other tripod-wielding snappers all looking for Brian! The others were from other clubs, including Blandford, Pimperne and Weymouth so it turned out to be quite a good social evening as well! Unfortunately it was overcast with no sunset opportunity so they immediately retired for coffees to make a plan of action. They made our way to the quay where various groups with tripods entertained the locals - much easier in a

largish group so no one bothered us! After an hour or so trying to become familiar with your camera mounted high up on a tripod and trying to use live view while not being able to see buttons or dials, we migrated towards the new Twin Sails Bridge. It appears the bridge was not working that night, at least according to the published schedule of lifts. The bridge has been beset with problems since being formally opened by various dignitaries and royalty and had only been carrying road traffic for a few days - did they have yet more problems? Earlier in the evening, they had all the red traffic lights flashing away while traffic continued to happily drive over it. Even so, there were various photo opportunities with the bridge down and well lit by the road lighting: rather too bright for photographic purposes. All in all, a useful evening, many thanks to Brian T for leading it. Our ‘Print and digital image of the year’ Subject: Open Competition was judged by Norman Carey from Blandford. Norman enjoyed each and every print and PDI and with his quiet sense of humour he captured the mood of each picture by giving helpful and constructive comments with fair points. The winner of the Small Prints was Kees van der Zwan with 'Heaven's Gate', seconded by Bill Norman with 'Lost in Books' and third place to Chris Wildey with 'Morning Mist'. Large Print winner was Chris Wildey with 'Under the Stairs', seconded by Rob Howard with 'WWW.' and third with 'Incoming Tide'. The winner of the PDIs was David Townley with 'Wasp', seconded by Pauline Townley with 'Eyes in the Sky' and third place to Bill Norman with 'White Water Adventure'. David Townley’s Wasp was brilliant – every little hair and blemish was picked out by this shot. Norman Carey is a true friend of Shaftesbury Camera Club and we have always enjoyed his sense of humour and professional approach in his judgement. Well done Shaftesbury winning both sections of the competition between Pimperne and thank you Pimperne for your hospitality. A full house for our STAR NIGHT with Jeremy Walker giving us a very comprehensive talk about his considerable experiences in both the commercial and private spheres of photographic interest. He covered the background to his career, the development of his business and his style; he gave some striking examples of landscape and portraiture (a protégé of Peter Lowry) from around the world. Giving us amusing descriptions of his ventures, especially the ‘shoe’ business – his shoes were made for walking.

Working for stock libraries as he did not have a studio so started in the kitchen – stock photograph shots need to have a punchy message to make money – a necessity for survival. When he discovered his ‘front door’ he started photographing landscapes, which he very much enjoys. He likes simplicity and clean lines. Visualise the shot before you take it and be aware of your surroundings when shooting a subject, if the photo does not work in colour use black and white. Jeremy enjoys photographing buildings and is happy with converging verticals, no need to straighten the architectural line in his view. Jeremy does a lot of stitching, three images together for landscapes, certainly very pleasing to the eye. Loves his Nikon and Novaflex tripod and never leaves home without his .9 Grad filter. Revised Competition Rules

At the AGM it is recommended by the Committee that the following changes are made to the Photographer of the Year Competition: 1. The three classes of the Photographer of the Year Competition are to be re-named “The Shuffell Trophy”. 2. The two print classes are to be re-categorised as Advanced and Intermediate Prints, with no restrictions on size for either class (except for the existing overall maximum including the mount of 20 inches x 16 inches). 3. Members may choose which class of prints they enter in each season, but may only enter one of the print classes in the same season. 4. The winner of the Intermediate class will only be allowed to enter the Advanced class in the following season. 5. The current requirement for the competition to be Open as regards the subject is to be removed.

At the AGM it is further recommended by the Committee that the following changes are made to the Print of the Year Competitions: 1. The two print classes are to be re-categorised as Advanced and Intermediate Prints, with no restrictions on size for either class (except for the existing overall maximum including the mount of 20 inches x 16 inches). 2. Members may choose which class of prints they enter in each season, but may only enter one of the print classes in the same season. (The aim of these changes is to encourage less-experienced Members, whilst recognising that some Members are producing small prints of a quality that matches that of large prints. Judging of the Intermediate class should take account of the lesser experience).
