    Large-scale civil projects were undertaken in the Yangtze Delta.There were developments in irrigation and river transportation, fishing, salt extraction and farming. Inland riverswere better used and shallow sea inlets were utilized as storage reservoirs.

    Shanghai was turned into an administrative district, which marked the regions growth and therecognition of its political and economic importance by the central government.13th Century

    Shanghai became a major port. This marked the official beginning of Shanghai as a city.16th century

    The central government of the Qing Dynasty set up its customs office in Shanghai.

    19th century (1842)

    As agreed in the Treaty of Nanjing, Shanghai became a treaty portopen to trade with Japan, Koreaand Southeast Asia. This treaty also granted privileges to invaders to live and trade in China.

    Shanghai became a colonial city.1949

    Shanghai was liberated by the Peoples Liberation Army of the Communist Party of China from Kuomintang Rule.TODAY

    Shanghai is one of the largest economic centers in China.

    This was primarily done out of the growing concern for environmental issues.

    In the redevelopment of waterways, old industrial areas lining the coast lines

    were converted to office, commercial, residential and/or leisure facilities.
